This has caused me significant concern and distress. Shame on you folks - Sure, my wife was 15 minutes late in reaching your place. The fact that she was treated so shabbily that she came back home in tears. She is the kind of person who won't even write a negative review online and so I'm compelled to do so. To calm her down, I advised her to write a letter to both your location and send a copy to corporate office. Someone sent her a text with the most feeble excuse offering a $15.00 credit. You get what you pay for. $90 for a root touch up and wash, pretty darn cheap. But, oh my goodness! At what price?? This place always seems overbooked. With every salon chair occupied and the overflow of customers scattered around the rest of the "salon." The process feels very slow here. My appointment was at 2:15, it is now 4:010 and I'm currently sitting in the chair waiting to be called for a wash. This will be my last visit to any Madison Reed. All the hair colorist work really hard and are super kind! There is a new manager at the store(2025). His name is Jose and he is wonderful. Has created a great energy in the salon. I've been using the salon for years. It is convenient and their hair color is actually good for your hair! Having a membership is a cost-effective way to get your hair colored consistently. Located in City Center San Ramon with convenient parking and the salon itself is comfortable. I would recommend it to anybody who wants to have quality hair color. Review is a bit overdue, but I can assure you that this unfortunate appointment remains fresh in my mind. I normally order the box of color to do myself at home, but I had already had it for about a month + kept making excuses not to do it myself. Combined with a coupon for a blowout, I figured I would give it a shot. Idk if they overbooked appointments the day of my service, or possibly took too many walk-in clients, but my experience was rough, not fluid & the service itself was of poor quality. I arrive a few minutes early & basically all the chairs are full. By the time my appointment rolls around, a seat at the back of the color bar opens & my stylist, Megan, seats me there. She mixes my color & applies it- this is all fine. As I'm waiting for my color to process, another stylist requests that I move to a chair over in the corner bc she needs a seat for her client. I oblige, but also wonder why I was singled out of the 8 ladies there, I had a bunch of stuff with me that I had to gather & I was offered no assistance in moving. Nobody else was asked to move, either, which seemed weird. 5 minutes after moving, my processing is up & I'm taken to the sink to have my hair rinsed. Now that it's time for my blowout, there is no chairs available & nobody is asked to move to the corner chair to accommodate me, which seemed weird again. Finally, a chair opens up & Megan moves me to start my blowout. She does not use any product whatsoever- not even a bit of the heat protection I told her that I was going to purchase, before getting started. Her blow-dry skills were abysmal. She was rough on my scalp, hair & also kept getting my earring caught in her brush & just ripping it through. She did it enough that I had to ask her to stop. She also did not style my hair whatsoever. I asked for volume with some curls at the end & she just blew my hair stick straight & said it's due to my hair texture. I have naturally wavy hair that holds a curl well- my hair is not the problem. Overall, I felt like the appointment was rushed, I was bounced around, not listened too, and then told it was my fault for having 'unrealistic expectations.' A frustrating waste of $160. Save your time & despair- have them color your hair & then blow it out yourself & the side station. It can't be any worse than the service that I received. read more

I was always curious about this service as I had been a early customer of TheDryBar and thought this was the color concept essentially. The staff was inviting and took me right to my appointment, the lady who blew dried my hair was very friendly. I have medium brown hair and had existing blonde and light brown highlights. I booked for highlights as I had a interview and needed to clean up my roots with undertone color and highlights. However, the product could not lift and match my color or even come close. That would be good to state on the webpage when booking that service. I had to get my roots a brown and cover my existing highlights with a brown just to be able to look good for my interview. If you need blonde highlights and you have brown hair this is not a service to pick here! read more

Just want to update my review to say this place still rocks! Everyone that works here is super friendly and knowledgeable. I am on the unlimited plan and it is easy to make appointments a week in advance. I have run late a couple times and they can accommodate if you are within the ten minute grace period. If you are later than that, you will probably need to make a new appointment because it is crowded and they need to defer to the people that are on time. I get it and and appreciate the professionalism here! This place keeps my hair looking shiny and new every couple of weeks. Thanks! read more

One of the worst experiences I had. Very bad customer care and service. I had an appointment and I was running a few minutes late , I called when I was close, left a message that I'm running late. What's the point of calling if they don't receive the message. If I cancel the appointment they'll charge me for canceling. If I show up a few minutes late after calling they don't help me with the appointment. I wait there for some more time. And suddenly they have an appointment but wait a minute, it's not what I want , it's what they can do. Problem no 1 , So , no where in the app, there's a mention of grace time and cancellation. I'm not a regular , how am I supposed to know.. Problem no 2, The previous time I was early by 10 minutes, I was checked in , but no one attended and they thought I will be late and were planning to cancel my appointment. So again me reaching early didn't help. Problem no 3, A lady asked are you waiting to check in, and even before I could answer , there was a lady Erica I think , who said we can't accommodate because she came in late. Problem No 4, a regional manager and customer specialist arrive and talk the same thing and explain the same thing , without giving me a choice. Thank you for ruining my event. read more

I wanted to try doing my own root touch up, but didn't want to mess up either. I tried using their online color match wizard, but was not confident about my choice. So I went into the store to get an in-person color consultation (free). The place was pretty busy, but I only waited about 20 minutes. I just wanted the same color as my hair so there really anything to describe to the consultant. She selected a color for me and gave me a color kit (about $26). I had a few questions but I could already see a long line behind me, so I figured I'll just read the instructions. The instructions were clear and simple enough. The kit includes everything you'll need, except a comb. There's gloves, cap, the solutions, and even shampoo and conditioner. The kit is for a full head of hair, so I wasted half the solution because I only needed a root touch up. I'm not sure if I could have saved half to use at a later time. But as it turned out the color was WAY too dark. My hair is brown, but now my roots look black. It's not horrible, but will be going back to my stylist. If I feel brave again, I might try selecting a different shade on my own next time. Turns out color consultation is no better than guessing yourself. The store itself was nice enough. It's a good alternative if you just want someone to help color your hair without all the fuss of a full service salon. read more

I've been a loyal customer at this location since 2023. After my visit today, I'm unsure if I'll ever be returning. I walked in early for my appointment. My previous visit was less than 2 months ago and there have been some changes. First thing I noticed was the changes at the front. There's only a small corner to check in and out. They were overwhelmed with almost all chairs filled. I was asked to take a seat at a chair where the previous customers tea bag on a paper towel, tea cup was still at. The person who asked me to sit down at the station said she would clean it up. She did not. It immediately begged me to question the cleanliness between clients. I don't believe the stations are cleaned between customers. At least I know mine definitely wasn't. My colorist came over and I politely asked her if she could remove that. She apologized and did so. She started sectioning my hair and I let her know I wasn't given a robe/cover up. She went to get me one. My colorist colored my roots and said she'd return with a shower cap but never did. When I looked around I noticed that another 2 coloring stations were added perpendicular to the end of the existing rows of coloring stations, essentially so that they can fit more clients. However, they still only have 3 wash stations. They've added 2 blow dry areas but I noticed how cramped it felt immediately. Because of the 2 new coloring stations added, they removed chairs to sit on when blow drying hair. It seems to be that comfort of customers is no longer important; that it has been exchanged for 2 extra customers in a tight space. I am very disappointed with my experience today and wouldn't recommend Madison Reed Coloring Bar anymore. read more

I had heard great things about Madison Reed when it came to color and service. I was excited to get my hair done there for the first time and had scheduled a full foil highlight. The facility was clean, bright and you are welcomed as you enter. You have nice spots to place purses, water bottles, etc. at your seating area. Doing good so far. My actual stylist Erica treated me like I should have known all about hair color. Made me feel as though I shouldn't have even made the appointment. She said well people usually don't do highlights again for 5-6 months. I personally have never had this been told to me nor would it look good. Then she walked away and said but okay I'll make your color. She was working on 3 people at one time after I was foiled and when told how long I would be left to sit it was longer than told each time. I waited an additional 5 minutes to be shampooed where my hair was pulled so hard while the foils were taken out I teared up. I was just told to hold my head up and it would be better. Have you tried to hold your head up for a long period of time while laying back at a salon sink? Doesn't happen. After all of that I was then told there was going to be toner that I didn't request. This would have me sit another 20 minutes. My appointment was at almost 3 hours at this point. In the end I now have to go back to have toner put in because I couldn't stay any longer. I have never had foils take more than 2 hours. I was so disappointed and I won't be returning. In addition the highlights are not very visible it just looks like I got my hair colored and my hair so dry and frizzy. Never had this at any other salon. read more

Do not go to this place! I had an appointment yesterday and it's the worst hair highlights job that was ever done to my hair! I got white/yellow large bleached sports and patches on the top of my head and left side. I can not believe it was done by a "licensed" professional! After paying $155+tips now I have to go to a normal salon to fix this horror! No wonder why the stylist did not give me a mirror to check the job on the back of my head yesterday. My hair color got messed up. I was here yesterday for roots and gloss service. The lady who colored my hair asked me twice if I want to use the same color (umbria-light brown) and I said yes. When I got home with completely dry hair, I noticed that my roots are a lot darker than the rest of my hair. I checked my Madison account for my orders, and there I saw that she put the color Torino-(dark brown )instead of the color I had on my previous order. Im so disappointed. I dont know why she messed it up because Torino is not even grey resistant and I had grey roots when I came to the bar. Clearly she is not paying attention as she would have seen that the color she is putting on is different from my hair color. Ladies, check your orders before you let them put the hair color. Why is it so hard to make an Appointment? I have never been there. I couldn't find it on my first try and I called to tell them that and they tried to charge me $50 for missing the appointment, tried to book again, they asked for a promo code. I only wanted my roots done and I don't have a promo code. No one at the salon is available to talk to. What is this membership about? After reading some terrible reviews, 1 star, and there were several, I think I will never go there. Way to expensive so they try to sell you a membership. More waste of money. This was only for a color consultation/purchase (no services). I attended a Madison Reed virtual house party last month and won a gift certificate. I decided to get a consultation rather than guessing which shade of brown to get. A color specialist helped me pick out a color and gloss for me to try. I have not done my root touch up yet, but will admit that I am impressed with the recommendation on the gloss to use! Overall. It is on the pricey side ($26 color and $30 for gloss), but worth checking out since there's a lot of DYI going on thanks to a pandemic. Plus, the kit instructions are so detailed that you can't mess it up. Masks are required and they have hand sanitizer available. read more

I used to love coming to this location and have been for over a year! Allison the previous manager always paid attention to her clients needs and preferences! I have a ton of grey hairs( have been greying since I was 11)- my temples is always a challenge; after getting different colorist every time, I was lucky to have my hair colored by Vibi- she got every hair colored and Allison made sure if Vibi was working on the day of my appointment she was assigned to me; or she personally colored my hair- Well, the new manager couldn't care less! I was told I absolutely could not request a colorist by name- I was at the location in the 28th dec - Vibi was free and not taking care of any other client yet she was not assigned to me... The manger couldn't take a minute to give me a personal explanation knowing I had requested Vibi- I was ignored and my color job was AVERAGE- as I feared, my temples did not get colored like they should! BUYER BEWARE! I'm posting a review after 2 consecutive nightmare appointments at this San Ramon location. 12/16/2022 summary shared with Madison Reed customer service about my appointment for roots-only coloring: 1- The stylist almost used an old color. 2- The stylist roughly combed through my hair and PAINFULLY RAKED OVER BOTH OF MY EARS & RESPONDED DEFENSIVELY about it being an accident. 3- The stylist heavily brushed dye past my hairline, which LEFT A DARK & OBVIOUS STAIN AROUND MY FACE THAT WAS NOT EASILY REMOVED, EVEN AFTER WASHING. Let's just say, I don't wear hats, but I did for the next couple of days! The emailed response was apologetic, and a credit was applied to my account, urging me to return. Thinking it was a one-off, I kept my next scheduled roots-only service, but I was too optimistic. At today's 9am appointment, I experienced the following: 1- Promptly at 9am, I found the DOOR LOCKED, DIM LIGHTS, & A GUY CLEANING WHO IGNORED ME AT THE DOOR. There wasn't a sign posted with store hours. I checked Yelp, which showed that they open at 10am! 2- I called Madison Reed's customer service and was told that they were supposed to open at 8:45am & put me on hold as they tried to contact the salon. 3- While on hold, I see the doors open at 9:05am. When I asked the 2 stylists why they didn't open at 9am, they CONTINUOUSLY ARGUE with me that they opened at 9am, INFERRING THAT I WAS LYING. Already agitated by their lack of accountability, one of them TELLS ME TO RELAX, refused to take my appointment, and WALKS AWAY. 4- When the customer service rep finally places me off hold (still couldn't get through to the store), I told him what happened, and he places me on hold again. After about 15 minutes of being on hold, the line disconnects. 5- A manager returns my call and tells me that the stylists told her that I was there at 8:50am. I said that's impossible as I left my house at 8:45am and live about 15 minutes away. She apologized for the wrong service hours posted on Yelp and the lack of any sign posted at the storefront with the hours of operation, but followed up with more excuses. I shared that there is a SYSTEM BREAKDOWN IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. I was especially concerned about their work environment if their employees RESORTED TO CONTINUOUSLY LYING IN FEAR OF ANY RETRIBUTION. In short, I DON'T TRUST THIS LOCATION, and feel pathetic for even trying to continue to get service! Who knows how many more bullet points of crap service I would've added! With my ugly roots, I may consider returning to the Walnut Creek location that is farther away, where they were professional from check-in to check-out. MOST LIKELY, I WILL RETURN TO A FULL SERVICE SALON for color & wash only appointments in a stress-free environment. read more
