My appointment with Hibiki started with a gentle hair wash before I was brought a small cup of tea and some konpeito to snack on as I showed him the album of reference photos on my phone. We were able to make some pleasant small talk even with the English-Japanese language barrier, and Hibiki was very attentive to making sure my hair was cut and styled in a flattering way that added volume! (I had let him know I struggled with my hair sitting flat) I would definitely come back!! I wish I had read some of the bad reviews. I have wavy hair that I usually air dry and then straighten with a hair iron. I asked for basic layers and long curtain bangs. She said " it won't look good because I have curls. Long hair is better" Did not bother asking for a picture or anything. But great! Love a stylist who knows her stuff, right? I agreed to a basic long layered cut. Then she goes on to start the hair cut and tells me she changed her mind - since I straighten my hair , she will take 2 inches off instead of 1 - I said great as long as I can pull all the hair back into a pony. Then a million questions on what to do at every point of the hair cut. I had to repeatedly pull the hair in the front (while she was cutting the back) to remind her to not go any shorter. In the end she says I did layers only in the front and very little in the back. Wow ok?? Cut to the chase, I ended up with short hair that I can barely pull back, no layers and literal chicken feathers in the front. $140 haircut + $28 tip as a Mother's Day treat to myself, it was my first haircut since I gave birth. Something tells me they messed up my hair because they don't want people of color with my hair type at the salon. Because I can't imagine a high end "Japanese technique" hair salon "master" not knowing how to do layers. Lol. At least be honest and say you can't handle our hair or give us a basic haircut that we could get anywhere else, because either way we wouldn't come back! I've never been here before but I was determined to try a head spa treatment. I set up an appointment online through their website and the staff responded pretty quickly. I had a head-spa appointment with Aki, no haircut. The salon is tucked in this retail plaza with Paris Baguette. When you check in, they check your temp, and give you hand sanitizer. Then you're instructed to put your personal belongings away in the lockers and change into their robe. The head-spa starts with an oil treatment placed on the dry hair. Then this is where the magic begins. The wash station has this super comfy chair then your head in wrapped in a hot towel. Your scalp is then steamed, washed, and conditioned. Your scalp and neck are massaged the whole time. It was so comfortable and relaxing. Aki has magical hands, this was so good. Then you're seated back at the styling chair where I had a shoulder, head, and neck massage. My hair was then blown dry with a round comb and then the magic was all over. I would hands down come back just for the head-spa. It was so relaxing to experience and Aki was amazing. $145 head-spa with $50 tip = take my money, worth the experience. read more

Such a great experience! From booking online to actually getting my haircut, everything went so smoothly. I called ahead to ask them if they had fragrance free shampoo & conditioner since I have atopic dermatitis that reacts to certain chemicals, and they told me I was allowed to bring my own products and they would accommodate me. When I arrived, I was about 10 mins early but they greeted me as soon as I walked in and were pretty punctual with getting my haircut on time. They give you a locker to place all personal items in with a key you keep with you, and a robe to protect your clothes. My hairstylist was Masa. I picked the person with the earliest availability but he was very professional and did a really great job. I showed him a photo of an idea I wanted for my hair- still long length but a lot of layers to add volume. I have very fine straight Asian hair, and thought it probably couldn't be close to what I showed him, but he proved me wrong! Really shows he knows what he's doing! When I would ask for a similar cut/ style at other salons, they would tell me my hair was too thin and would not hold layers well so they would always give me a basic straight cut. Other salons made me despise my head of hair, but his haircut made me realize I wasn't crazy. Very grateful for him! Haircut took about 1 hour including shampoo, cut and dry. He also did not use or push any products on me like most salons do (even after I tell them of my reactive skin) which really made me feel heard, like he took my skin condition seriously. I do not recommend this salon at all for a head spa. I booked my appointment over a month in advance and I was so excited to get a refresh for my dry scalp, but it was a bad experience. My head spa appointment was with Aki (the director) and I'm embarrassed that I paid $165+tip for this visit. Aki never introduced himself, asked what I was there for, what my hair or scalp needs were, etc. He barely spoke to me and I had to ask all the questions and tell him my hair needs to make sure he focused on the right areas. I was told over the phone that the head spa included a lot and focused a lot on the scalp... however, Aki only did one spot treatment and massaging. Other than that, nothing else for my scalp. I was in and out in under an hour and majority of that time was a hair wash and blow dry. The blow dry was just awful, I can blow dry my hair quicker and better at home. My hair was frizzy and didn't even look like a blowout or "salon grade". It was just whatever. I'm only giving 1 star because the head massage was good. Otherwise, zero stars are in order. Horrible experience with Hibiki for a 90$ haircut. Shampoo was okay except my stylist got soap and water in my eye. The stylist never asked if the water temperature was okay - went from cold to scorching hot. When we discussed what I wanted to be done to my hair my stylist said he understood. I had explicitly said I wanted a trim and wanted my hair to be 1 to 2 inches below my chin, instead he went ahead and gave me a very short bob and my hair doesn't even reach down to my chin. When I told him, he kept on asking me if I wanted my hair shorter which I responded with "no my hair is already too short". I don't know if it was a miscommunication or if he just didn't understand what I wanted. He also went on to thin out my hair which is not great for frizzy wavy hair as it just makes it worse. Make sure you can explicitly tell them what you want or to confirm multiple times throughout the haircut because for some reason my stylist didn't care to check with me and just gave me what didn't ask for. read more

Always deserves a 5-star! This time for handling and delivering great service during the pandemic. Just wanted to leave a note for anyone looking to get a hair cut and is speculating on what could happen when you walk in to a salon these days... well if you manage to get an appointment at Viange, you can consider yourself lucky because throughout the process you will feel safe about the contactless approach that this salon has put together to deal with the pandemic. The only think you would touch is the door knob outside to open the door, May be wear your gloves or just sanitize after..once you are in you won't have to worry about such things. Viange safety protocols: 1. You walk in and they check your temperature 2. You scan and register your visit for that day with them (guessing this is to establish contact tracing) 3. They will give you hand sanitizer and ask you screening questions 4. They will provide a ziplock bag for your phone!! (This one is really helpful) 5. The chairs are wrapped and sanitized. 6. You will wear a clean robe over your clothes. 7. Your stylist is wearing gloves while all of this is happening so you do feel safe and still very much pampered. It was a quick appointment, but she really paid attention to every last detail and made sure it turned out great. I've been struggling with post-partum hair loss near the front of my face, and these bangs have really refreshed my whole look! I've had great cuts by 3 stylists here now and they've never failed me. Setting up an appointment is easy. You can call in or make one online (I recommend you do this method). For certain stylists, you may have to be prepared to wait over 2 months, but it's worth it! If you can plan ahead and wait, then you'll be very happy you did. The setting and atmosphere is super relaxing, like a spa. The hair wash is always nice and soothing. I love the music they play here too. Every bit of this experience relaxes me and is a nice getaway from everyday life. If you need a treat-yourself haircut, then look no further! read more

TLDR: you could not pay me to come back here. one of the most confusing and frustrating hair coloring appointments I've ever had. Came in for a root touch up on my bleached blonde hair. After the first coloring, my hair was somehow brown. I had to stay an extra hour in the chair (5 hours total) for my hairdresser to 'fix' my hair, only for me to leave with this hideous orange patchy hair. Be cautious of this place for any color or bleach treatment. They don't know what they're doing. I'm incredibly disappointed that I didn't have a good experience with this salon, given that they have stellar reviews on yelp. I booked an appointment with Masa for a root touch up. In our brief consultation, I clearly explained that all I wanted was to make my roots the same color as the rest of my hair (see photo 1). As a hairdresser, if you don't think you can do what a customer has requested, do us both a favor and just be honest about it. The first 3 hours were pretty standard, but when he walked me back to the chair after washing my hair, I was floored by my appearance. My hair was completely brown (see photo 2). I was so shocked, and Masa continued to blow dry my hair as if nothing was wrong. I couldn't even say anything until he asked me, 'How's the color?', to which I obviously responded 'this isn't the color I wanted.' He then asked me to stay longer so he could try to fix it. I wish he owned up to his mistake more in this moment instead of trying to gauge how I felt about it. If you're charging premium price for your services, you better live up to it or at the very least own up to your mistakes. There was no chance that he thought that brunette was what I wanted. He most likely mixed up my color wrong. Before he even attempted to fix his mistake, I pulled up the exact photo I'm posting here now (photo 1) and asked him if he can honestly get me back to the color I walked in with. He repeatedly said yes. So I sat there for another two hours only to leave with the orange hair I have in the third photo. At the 5 hour point, I couldn't just stay longer and request for him to fix it again, so I left and rescheduled another time. I had to live with this ugly orange hair for 5 days. It turned patchy and even more orange as time went on. I ended up just going somewhere else to get my hair fixed so I wouldn't have to waste any more of my time. Would never come back here. Maybe they have better hair dressers that actually know what they're doing, but not Masa. I hope no one else has to experience the utter lack of respect that I did here. read more

If you're looking for a place to get your hair cut well and have a relaxing experience, look no further! I took a gamble with Viange after finding what I hoped would be my main stylist in San Francisco pre-pandemic, but my split ends couldn't take it any longer. Appointment request is super easy, with limited options for what weekdays, though with full day openings (as can be expected right now). It was super thoughtful that they called to remind me and confirm a couple of days ahead of the appointment, and when I was arriving slightly late (turned into the wrong shopping entrance), they also called to check in and see if I needed anything. Check in was thorough and gave me peace of mind/let me know what to expect - checked temperature at the door, asked to use sanitizer, and also gave me a ziploc bag for my phone. Extra luxe touch being offered a robe to wear, as well. I didn't know how much I missed the feeling of being able to relax and have someone just wash my hair... it's really a luxury that I took for granted. Hao (I think, can't remember his name but he was also the one who checked me in) really gave such a relaxing and soothing hair wash, and was gentle and thorough. It was a nice touch that he asked what my hair concerns were to specifically select shampoo/treatment, and he explained what each product would do. Sheila was my stylist and she was equally as gentle/thorough, as I gave her the quick rundown on my hair and she made some adjustments along the way, always asking what I thought and explaining her reasoning. My hair is thin and tangles easily, but she was so gentle that I honestly could have fallen asleep. Only thing I'd note is that the marketing of their product along with the haircut is typical but a little hard to turn down - they set the products near your station and as you check out, they already bring it up to the register with you. But honestly, if I wasn't already working my way through some custom hair products right now, I probably would have taken them up on it because it really did feel like both Hao and Sheila recommended products that were targeted for my needs. Did end up getting their styling oil that Sheila said was salon-made! Really appreciated her tips and advice, especially as we chatted about a followup appointment and ideas for if I wanted to do anything more with my hair (I inquired about a perm or body wave and she gave me an honest recommendation against it after working with my hair. Really appreciated her upfront opinion.) All in all, clean, minimally luxurious, and a relaxing experience. I couldn't express how disappointed I am. I went to Viange to let Shin cut my hair for the first time this spring. I didn't do anything than cut because it was too long. I have very wavily nature curl hair, but as I always have long hair and it's dry in Bay Area so my hair always look straight without perm it. Shin knows I have nature curl hair so he didn't thin it, with a little bit layer it turned out was nice and look refresh. So I went there 2nd time last month. This time is for prepare to grow my hair out, the bottom gets heavy so I ask Shin to cut some layer or thin it. This time he didn't do layers, instead, he 'cut' my both side hair shorter, when I said 'cut' he literally hold the scissor horizontally and cut it flat. Without delicate layers it just look like cut by accident. Besides I don't have any intention to cut my hair shorter as I want to grow it out. I trust his profession as he is the 'master' in the salon. But I was wrong. Never in my life any hair dresser wants to cut my hair too short because they know nature curl hair needs weights to control the frizziness and curl. He cut my both size to short now my hair completely out of control , it looks puffy, frizzy, curly, and I hate this length as I want it to grow long. He always try to convince me to get Japanese hair straighten perm or Keratin. And I always telling him no, because my hair look perfectly straight and shine without straight perm. And now it's all gone and out of control. And for some reason the way he cut it makes my hair end looks so bad and frizzy. I have to spend half hour to use straightener to straight my hair every time after I washed my hair. It's completely ruin and every night when I do this I always wonder if he did it on purpose so I have to go back to perm my hair straight. Because it's just it's so hard style now. I've always highly recommended this salon to my friends and colleagues. But I left so disappointed and certainly not beautiful or happy last night. Ive gone to this studio multiple times and consider myself a loyal customer, twice with Sheila for haircuts last year then "upgraded" to Aki in Feb for a cut which I really liked so decided to continue with him for my follow up in June. Aki mentioned in Feb he also did color and highlights so I naturally assumed since he's really good and being the top stylist, I took a chance. When they called me to confirm my appointment last week, I asked if it still included coloring and they confirmed so that's the expectation I had coming in. It's also what I remember booking for with Aki back in February. When I sat down in the chair last night to show pictures, he seemed surprised that we wouldn't have enough time considering it was 8pm. I completely agreed as I know doing color takes time and I told him I didn't have to get my hair highlighted if there was no time. But he said he could do it. Had I known I was going to get a botched experience, I would have happily passed but now I'm in very deep regret and dissatisfaction. Biggest regret ever!!! I now have to figure out who can fix this botched color job before my business trip next week for work as it's embarrassing to leave the house with what they're done. I've had positive experiences with other colorists that have done my hair specifically with balayage and my money piece. I don't know if Aki was off his game considering it was an 8pm appointment and end of the day. I showed him pictures of the haircut I wanted. It was no different than what I shared back in Feb. He gave me an A line cut instead. I told him to go shorter in the back and that I was ok with going shorter in the front. I have no idea why he thought I wanted an A line when the picture I showed was a bob. I ended up telling him towards the end and showing the picture again. I'm not very happy with the result either. It's nowhere compared to what he did for me back in Feb and now I have to deal with how to style the current cut and short hair. Onto the coloring experience, he bleached the money piece area and made all my existing highlights dark. When the foil came off, one of the pieces was ORANGE!!! I don't know how he thought that would have been an acceptable color to leave the salon. When I told him it was orange, he said it was my natural hair color with bleach. I was really unhappy and frustrated at this point. He did another round of bleach to lighten it. From my past experiences, other coloring stylists use different toners to achieve the color and make sure it looks blended with your hair. At this point it was already past 10pm and I wanted to go home as I have early work calls in the morning and did not want to be at the salon anymore to fix it further. I was already fed up and unhappy. The job looks like an amateur did it and it's a botched job. I don't even know what to do at this point about it. The money piece isn't even blended and it looks like a tiger stripe. It doesn't start at the root of my hair so it looks like the color is already grown out. When I went to pay, Aki mentioned if I wanted to keep that color (which is totally NOT what I wanted) that he would have to charge me extra next time and that this time, he didn't. I was beyond shocked at the statement and was just so tired that I didn't want anything to do with it anymore. The color needs to be toned down more. Don't get me wrong , Aki and the staff are incredibly nice and I've had pleasant experiences and quality services in all my past visits and I feel terrible for writing this review but others have to know about my experience. It is not worth your time or money. Aki charges $150 for haircut, the color was $190 and I don't even know why I tipped him. I feel so robbed. How I feel about this studio is that Viange salon just took my money, threw me out to the curb with a botched job and it was NOT cheap. Now I have to figure out how to get this fixed and pay even more $$ somewhere unless this salon is willing to fix it and show they they actually offer quality services else i do not recommend this studio at all. I don't know how many times I had to communicate this wasn't what I wanted and to have pictures to show with results that's nowhere close, is pretty bad. This was my first time here and I am incredibly pleased with how my hair turned out! I haven't had a haircut since last August in Korea, so this was pretty dire... My hair grew to my bellybutton with a mixture of light reddish brown ends. I called in to make an appointment on Tuesday and got booked for the following day for haircut and dye. I have to say that I am in awe of the experience I had here with Sheila. She is kind, attentive, and very meticulous in cutting hair. Viange is a full-service hair salon located in the same mall as Amakara, a few stores away from Go Goong Korean Tofu and BBQ. To her credit, my wife found this on Yelp and was willing to try a premium place ($60 for women before tip) that might specialize in cutting Asian-style. She wound up pretty happy with the results - it took a little over an hour. As for me, I was impressed with their amenities and services in the waiting area. Yayoi is an amazing hairstylist; her consultation was very thorough and she asked questions so I knew exactly how she was going to cut my hair and the lengths of the different layers. Throughout the haircut she was very attentive to detail and took her time making sure every layer was even. I really liked how she didn't rush and was very patient with her work. I'm super happy to have gotten a haircut from Sheila! I'm used to super short hair but because of Covid, I had to hold off and my hair was turning into one frustrating mess that's a daily bother. Finally had enough. Such a relief to have finally gotten the haircut and it looks perfect! The whole process from online booking, to the appointment was simple and smooth. I felt very safe as they carried out lots of safety precautions and sanitizing procedures such as checking your temperature, masks on, registration for contact tracing, customers seated far apart, sanitizing all tools and equipments etc. It was my first time getting a haircut from Sheila as the hair stylist I have been with was no longer there. I couldn't be happier with Sheila! She's nice, professional and took time and care with my hair. I showed Sheila a photo of what I wanted. She tailored it to adjust for my head shape, hair texture/growth etc. She checked in a couple of times to make sure things were how I wanted it. The haircut was perfect and turned out exactly the way I wanted it. This hair salon is on the slightly expensive side but I think it's reasonable and totally worth the price tag. You get what you paid for. I think it's especially worth the price if you have flat, very straight hair like me. As Asians don't typically have nature curls/wavy hair that gives natural texture and layers, you really need stylists who are familiar with Asian face/bone structures, hair texture etc and have the specialized skills to work some magic. One of my best friends recently got married and booked this salon to do our hair for her wedding. It was incredibly hospitable of them to open up their salon for us before their regular business hours in order to accommodate the bride's strict schedule for the day. I don't know the stylists names, but all of us looked amazing! My hairstylist was a male and truth be told, I was very nervous because the way he was curling my hair brought me back to when I received a blowout and asked for soft saves, but ended up with limp crimped hair that was not flattering in the slightest. I actually very much hated my hair that day. I told myself to sit tight and just go with it since it was my best friend's wedding and whatever style I would be given was the style that she wanted for me. OMG. I LOOKED AMAAAAAAZING. I loved my hair so much that I didn't wash it for 3 days and lived off of dry shampoo. I had also recently colored my hair and the pieces that chose to curl showed off my different colors perfectly. I truly wished I lived in the Bay Area so that I could get my hair styled here more often. read more

All of that was decided before we were given pricing. There was no miscommunication. I actually had the stylist write her price down on the business card to avoid confusion. I would rate this place 3/5 for specifically the Japanese Straight Hair Perm. I've always gotten straight perms my whole life because I have naturally wavy thick hair and this is probably the first time I got it where it didn't feel that straight. The back is still slightly wavy and my hair in general still is pretty poofy. I would not come back here for a straight perm, but the service was really good and the ladies here are really friendly. read more

I do not get my hair cut super often as I get really nervous about other people cutting my hair but I really wanted a change and I have gotten some great recommendations for this place so I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did! I had an appointment with Shin and I showed a photo of what I wanted and he did an amazing job replicating it on my hair type. I have extremely difficult hair to work with and it is very frizzy but he cut it perfectly and he styled it exactly as I asked. The haircut was very private and peaceful and I love how my hair came out. It is a little pricey however but if you are able to go I highly recommend it, I think it's definitely worth it! read more
