First time checking out this dog run with my pup. It's easy to find once you step into Madison Square Park. Love how it's separated by small and all dogs, and it has turf. It was pretty crowded on a Sunday afternoon but still space for the doggos to run around. It has a small hill where dogs can go up and down on. Only downfall is that owners don't pay attention to their pups, so when they go poop, they don't realize and it just sits there. Luckily, we help each other out so it does get picked up eventually since no one wants their dog to step on it or eat it. Definitely will be back with my pup since she had a great time there! read more

This dog run is smaller than the one at West 4th as well as Tompkins Square Park but it's a much nicer park location for owners. There is a small and a big dog park: this park seldom has dead hours, as dog walkers often bring dogs here as well. Some owners here don't pay attention to their dogs, so be mindful around the doggy pool in summer - and dogs hopping between the small and the big dog park if you have a timid small dog. read more

My first time in this park and it really makes me feel like Im in an animation 'The secret life of Pets' it's small-medium size of dog run and so many dogs play with another. Look like my puppy has a nice party:) people are polite and take serious responsibility. Kids are always supervised by an adult. I've recently started taking Kula here and she likes it well enough, although it's been too hot for her to run and play. It is a great location, with the right combination of shade and breezes. There is a separate small-dog area, and I've never seen a dog in it yet. (Kula is a big dog in the body of a small dog so we go to the large-dog area where we can mingle.) The drainage has been improved since I used to come here several years ago; it seems to be done in a similar fashion to that of the Tompkins run, which I was told was re-surfaced to resemble a sandy beach, with layers of stone and gravel below facilitate drainage. read more

I particularly don't like it, but my dog loves it. He always drags me here when we are a few blocks away. He just knows where this park is. The park can get smelly in summer and kinda gross, but overall, my pup doesn't mind. I think the gravel surface is easier on their paws. There is a large and small dog area. They should just make them both into one huge area since I don't see too many small dogs in the small area anyway. One good thing is it's near shake shack, so you could get something to eat before or afterwards with your dog since they don't have indoor seating. read more

This park is located right in front of the flat iron building which is a great location. The park itself has lots of trees for shade yet enough natural sunlight. There are also lots of benches to sit and watch your pup play. One of the best parts about this park is the outside shake shack. You can grab a burger and then watch your dog play. The park is gravel and pebble so you don't have to worry about ticks or stepping in poop. The only con is no separation between big and small dogs. The big dogs are running circles around all the puppies, but other than that I highly recommend this park. read more

One of my favorite dog parks! It has a good amount of space. It's very comfortable for all types of dogs to play in. It's very clean compared to many other dog parks and regular parks. It's in a great location-it's very helpful that there is a Petsmart right across the street just in case you need anything for your dog. There are also many stores, transportation and restaurants in the area. I have encountered all types of dogs here. All the dogs and owners I have encountered have been extremely nice. It's a place with just the right amount of noise. I have never been bothered here by obnoxious noise or people. So far each time I have been here there are at least four other dogs. My dog has had great fun here. I will surely repeatedly come back here with my dog! read more

not a bad dog park /human people hang out with plenty of space for us fools to sit while the doggies run around in the hard gravel . separate fenced space for small dogs and separate space for longer dogs as well. i took my nieces dog here as its less dogs which means less barking and less drama. the park is cleaned and well maintained and folks who unleashed their dogs can keep a watchful eye while sitting in the shade. i prefer grass dog parks but the gravel aint that bad as its not rough on human and doggys feet . decent dog park on the west side which may lack in spacious grounds but makes up for it with a calm safe retreat for the many dogs visiting. read more

Good dog run . They have bags to pick up your dogs poop and a bowl for dogs to drink in. Sometimes the big dogs like to step on the bowl I'm guessing to cool off? The ground has small pebbles and dirt which is a downer because when it rains there's a puddle of mud and dogs like to run on it and when they run and get on top of you , you get dirty. People prefer the section for big dogs because of the bigger size area. The seatings have dirt on them ,if you don't mind getting your pants dirty than you shouldn't worry and if you do bring a bag to sit on. read more

One of my hounds refuses to relieve herself anywhere else in town, so we're here several times a day. Unless it rains. Wow, she hates rain. So this is probably one of New York's better dog parks, although there is no grass to be found, just gravel. It's large and generally well-maintained, and there are plenty of benches. But like all dog parks, it's only as good as the people who come here, and many of the people who come here are assholes. Not all or even a majority of them, but certainly enough bad apples to rot the barrel. It's a living catalogue of the ways people can be selfish, lazy, and inconsiderate. Among the main offenders: - People who think that "If I just ignore my dog while it takes a dump, it never happened." - People who repeatedly bring vicious dogs to the park. I have seen the same friggin' Shiba Inu attack at least three dogs, and the owner always acts like it's a surprise. - People who bring food. Into a dog run. Not a hot dog; we're talking entire cooked meals or bags of groceries. And then get upset when the dogs are interested! But I will reserve a special level of hatred for the inconsiderate trash who repeatedly leave the gates open, or don't bother to latch them, or open both gates at once, putting everyone's four-legged friends at risk. It happens every single day. One pregnant woman told me she couldn't close the gate in her "condition," which didn't seem to prevent her from opening it. Really, blaming your unborn child for your own laziness sets a new low in lack of personal responsibility. Dogs are great; but some people really fucking suck. read more

I adopted a dog about 3 months ago and have tried other dog parks around the area, but this one is so far my best spot to go with my dog! :D Pros: - a good mixture of dogs of different sizes and breeds - almost always never empty! - plenty of benches for owners - free vinyl bags to take care of the nuggets - separate area exclusively for small dogs - right by Shake Shack!!! XD When the weather gets nice, you can come here to eat at Shake Shack with your dog by ur side. Cons: - urine smells after rains/snows Most of the owners are regulars here so it's easy to see the same dogs and same owners around the same time. Now, the reasons why it's 3 stars and not 4-5... 1. It's a public dog park and sorry to say, not all dog owners (haha) in the world are socialized and well-behaved. I've had several instances where my dog was legit attacked by a dog and the dog owners stand passively by without intervening as if this is normal dog behavior. No, it's not, I know dogs, I've had them all my life. So...just saying, popular, public dog park = all sorts of crazy dog owners. 2. Random people in the park think it's okay to go into the dog park without pets. There's always those parents that bring their young children in without thinking, so now you have to stress about dogs playing with other dogs and making sure your dog doesn't accidentally knock over the 2 year old kid during his run. Even worse, these random people without pets open both the gates and don't close the gates when they leave, putting all our dogs at risk! This should be playground rules, no pet, don't come in, otherwise your a petophile! 3. Annoying dog owners who don't pick up after their dog. In almost every review it says it smells like poop, because the dog owners don't pick up the poop. There's a lot along the edges of the fence. Watch your step. read more

Located on the 5th Ave side of Madison Square Park. This dog run as mentioned previously is fenced in, covered with gravel and very spacious. Tons of benches and shaded spots for owners to sit and relax. I like that there is a hose for unlimited fresh water. My boxer loves any dog park and this one can be added to the list. There are always a variety of dogs here think NYC melting pot, but canine version. Shake shack is right around the corner. There is a nice lawn area around the run but this is off limits to dogs unfortunately. Bathrooms are also scarce. There is a coin operated restroom on the other side of the park. This is one of the nicest looking dog runs I've been to. It's well maintained and fits right in at Madison Square Park. I went to the large run and there's plenty of seating with the nice wood benches around the trees. The run is dirt covered with small pebbles. I guess the pebbles help with the dust but I am not a big fan of the pebbles since they get kicked up when dogs run around and could hit dogs (or people) in the eyes. Dogs of all sizes like to jump up on top of the benches since there's a platform, often jumping over people to get to the top. Feels like I have to be on constant lookout and can't relax. A lab even snatched my collapsible dog bowl from the bench top and ran off with it and it took a while for the owners to get it from the dog. Luckily, it wasn't damaged where it's useless, but there are now permanent dent marks from the lab's teeth. Overall a nice run because it's well maintained, but I probably will just hang out by Shake Shack or the rest of the park with my dog. read more

Great location on Broadway and 23rd street. This is a pretty big park with lots of spectators. Lots of dogs. Very convenient for owners. Provides poop bags and lots of scoopers. There's water for the dogs. Lots of benches for owners. The downsides are that the smell of urine was very strong. Even though there was a lot of dogs, none of the dogs were playing. Love to spend time in or near this dog run. It has a lot of amenities for the bestest animals in the world! There's enough room to hold say a little more than 12 dogs at a time. It has double doors so that you can exit with your dog, have him sit and get a leash put on him. and then a second door to walk out of. im pertty sure this is standard for most dog parks in the city... but believe it or not, i've seen some that dont have the double door situation! I have been told by other dog owners that they do not take their dogs into the dog park as there are aggressive dogs and the owners of the aggressive dogs do not pay attention to their dogs. I experienced such a situation like this tonight. An aggressive dog attacked my dog and the dog's owner was not paying any attention to his dog. was not paying attention to his dog, I had to pull the aggressive dog off my dog. The owner came over and blamed my dog for having a problem!!! I will never visit this dog park again. Shame on the people who run Madison Square Park for not ensuring that the dog run park guidelines are followed. read more

This dog park is small if you have anything other than a very small dog. It also gets very crowded and the urine smell gets very intense. Most people are courteous and watch their dogs, however I have had some experiences with dog walkers coming in with 5 dogs and then sitting and doing a crossword instead of watching them. They also hold up the entrance as they take a very long time to get their multiple dogs inside. read more

The dirt comes up and everyone is inhaling urine. Smelly place full of careless dogowners and walkers. Would be better without the rocks they bother my dogs paws. Alot of gossipmongers, and bored people use the place to chat each other up while their dogs crap everywhere and cause trouble. Used to like this Park. There is one dog walker (older, very tall, gray haired, disheveled) who brings in a smallish, one-eyed dog who attacked my dog. I asked the dog walker to put the dog on the leash and he refused. "No, I don't have to. It's a dog park." (I guess he gets to do his job while sitting down this way). His dog continued trying to bite my dog. I left and called the cops, but they did not come in time before he left. Watch out for him and the one-eyed dog! read more
