We have been taking our dog here for about a year. The owner is great! She remembers Maggie, has a card with how we like her hair to be cut, and will make note of any feedback you give her for next time. The shop is in the first floor of an older home on the East Side, and is nothing special. However, I could careless what it looks like, and am much more concerned about of my dog will react and be treated. She loves every dog that comes to her shop, as much as I love my dog. This place was awesome! Took our 5 month old puppy here for his first haircut. She went light on his haircut to ensure he wouldn't get too scared but did enough to have his looking clean and definitely less mop-like! He is a doodle and she didn't shave his nose like most dog groomers try to do. Left him looking like a doodle, not a poodle. Done in a little over an hour and the pup seemed like he had a great time. I am writing this review only because I feel that I should probably share my experience with Madras since the incident doesn't seem isolated. This review is actually from when I went there five years ago. It seems silly to write a review from an experience a half decade ago but I would like to comment on the character of the groomer. A few days before I brought my shih tzu into her I'd just rescued him from a very neglectful situation where he was extremely neglected (and we suspect abused) in a very rural area. This has left his temperment to be very mellow and shy. His coat was completely matted and he was in desperate need of a groom. I was so excited to bring him to her and when we walked in the door she had the nastiest attitude with us, even without saying a word. At first I thought perhaps I'd interpreted the situation incorrectly but when I began speaking with her she confirmed that my gut was correct. She scolded us for not having him neutered and turned her nose up at us for bringing a dog to her in such poor aesthetic condition (remember, he's a rescue we got a few days earlier, which is what we explained to her). When we came back I gladly will say that he had a beautiful cut but the condescension far overshadowed this woman's craft. I have chosen to go to other groomers that are further away from my home who do a slightly less better job than she does because I refuse to support such a mean spirited and seemingly arrogant person. I am sad that this incident doesn't seem to be able to be chalked up to someone having a "bad day". What a shame... One star for the crappy service and one for giving him a nice cut. read more

Madra came recommend by our Veterinarian's secretary. He have tried 4 different pet groomers over the last couple years and have come back to Madras again and again because she seems to understand how to do a good cut on our Yorkie, Louie. She keeps notes on things you prefer and special instructions so there is no need to repeat what you want the dog to look like after the grooming. Prices are reasonable....not the cheapest, but not the most expensive (we pay $55, which includes tip) Overall we have had great luck taking our dog here and considering we have tried 4 other groomers, I figure I can giver her a 5 star review, because apparently nobody else knows how to groom a Yorkie well :D read more

I would not dream of taking my dog anywhere but Madra! They know that all dogs are different and really take the time to get to know your pet. Also, Helena has a background in the veterinary world and is sensitive to any health or behavioral issues your dog might have. They even alerted me to something I needed to have my vet check, and I was hugely appreciative. And I haven't even mentioned the grooming! My dog always looks amazing and chic when I pick her up! They're fantastic groomers and super cool people to deal with. I love Madra and feel the prices are incredibly fair. Not sure who some of the other reviewers are talking about, but the Madra I know is one of my favorite small local businesses and I adore them. I never want to go to any other groomer! I've been going every 3-4 months since the opening. Helena always does exactly what I ask for and gets the job done fast. It's nice when you can get to know your groomer, and it's nice to have someone you can trust with your dog. I have 2 Maltese. One is relaxed and the other is a nervous guy. She handles both of them gently and has a special way with my nervous dog. I'm lucky to have Madra in my community. read more

Our dog has been groomed a few times and our favorite has been Madra Pet Styling. He is a high energy dog that I can imagine would be a challenge to groom. The results were great and he came home happy and fluffy! Really can't ask for more. I gave 4 stars not 5 because when we were charged I didn't know how the amount was came up with. We have a golden retriever, which is normally a very long haired breed, but our dog was a puppy and didn't have any of the long hair in yet that needed cutting. And I know we got charged the price of a "golden cut". i didn't think the price was outrageous by any means. I just would have liked to have some more information on our amount was decided upon. NOT ANY way saying I wouldn't continue to have my dog groomed here. Just an observation. Two thumbs up for Madra! read more

Truly the best groom my dog ever gotten--and the owner is incredible! I moved to Milwaukee from Los Angeles where I took him to one of the boujee places & it came nowhere close to being as good as Madra. When I first brought my Leda (a very messy terrier mix) to Madra Pet Styling I had trouble conveying- or maybe even deciding- what I wanted her to get as a haircut. She is a tricky mix of coarse, wiry Cairn Terrier hair and silky, flowy Longhaired Dachsund fur, and between the cowlick-y feathering on her legs to her bushy eyebrows to her kinked tail, I didn't know what type of cut to ask for. Thankfully the years of grooming experience and creativity between Helena, Erin, and Natasha they sculpted my scraggly, ragamuffin into an absolute princess! I was overwhelmed and have been asking for this "style" ever since that first cut. I love my dog like a daughter and appreciated Helena's attentiveness to my dog's lifestyle. She asked what I was feeding, which grooming products I used at home, and if I had any concerns that she should know about before handing Leda over (something else I liked-- the fact that I literally "handed" my dog over. Getting dropped off in a new place can be stressful to some dogs and Helena knew to make the transition as quick and painless as possible... No long, sappy goodbye hugs or dragging Leda in by her leash against her will.) Something else I am absolutely grateful for is the fact that Helena offered to do a free sanitary trim (shaving down/trimming the hair away from Leda's lady-parts) in between grooms. I was embarrassed having to explain that my dog suffers from urinary problems and longer-hair down can be a breeding ground for bacteria that lead to UTIs. Having worked with dogs for years, and having been a veterinary technician prior to becoming a groomer, Helena not only understood my concern, but assured me it ain't no thang. Reassuring to know that I won't have to plead for a doggy-Brazilian at each groom! Leda looks forward to going to Madra. She is handled well (these ladies know how to put up with her tenacious terrier bullshit on the grooming table), gets to mingle with a great group of dogs in the shop when she's finished (she is usually cuddled up on Madra's front windowsill when I pull up, sunning herself in a pile of well-preened pooches and throw pillows), and happy and gorgeous when she comes home! read more

this past thanksgiving, i was taking care of my 11 year old golden retriever holly since my parents went on vacation. i live with my roommate across the street from madra and decided that holly would benefit and enjoy a fall-time spa day. holly is very easy going, always friendly, and just a wonderful old soul to be around. as soon as my roommate and i entered madra, the owner scowled at us and looked us both up and down with the look that said, "what are these two stupid kids doing here." regardless, i continued booking an appointment for holly - my parents gave me $75 for the service(s). i thought i'd bring it to the helena's attention that holly had both her legs repaired after ACL tears a few years ago, so that she couldn't jump up on her own onto the tables. apparently, this was going to be a HUGE problem for helena, and she promptly cut our appt booking short by saying, "i'm not sure if i can groom your dog then..." and left it at that. needless to say, she said she'd call me back with a definite answer as to whether or not she could help me and holly out. not surprisingly, i never received any sort of reply back even though she asked for my number and the other dates that could have worked out. all in all, helena greeted us from the start with an extremely bitter and negative attitude, along with the biggest scowl i have ever seen. she treated me not like a paying customer / potential new client, but rather as a stupid child who just happened to wander in to her "VIP" dog styling place (which, it totally isn't, seeing as the prices are outrageous while the interior space is dark, dusty, unprofessional, and just tired looking). for the prices she charges, i'd at least expect the place to be updated and cleaned up a bit... read more

I love Madra pet styling. I have been taking my dog there for the last 2 years. I had very bad experiences at the grooming places in Shorewood and was referred to Madra by a friend. My dog (shorkie) was terrified of going to the last grooming place... she would paw at me and cry. When I take her to Madra I don't get that reaction. She walks right in with her tail wagging. Helena is extremely knowledgeable about different dog breeds and I am not sure of the ladies name that works with her but she is also very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I live just a few blocks from the shop. I've been shamed for Ruby's matted hair under her pits and I just do not enjoy interacting with the owner. As others say the grooming is not the problem. It's the aloof, judgmental owner that always has a nasty scowl on her face. I leave in such a bad mood and now take her to a groomer near my place of work. Please if you have such disdain for people who are not the epitome of perfect pet owners (a knot, a snarl) get another job. read more

I took my dog here twice over a year ago and I have never and will never go back. Our first visit was okay, she did a nice job grooming him but said she didn't like his attitude, which was alarming to me because anyone who has ever met my dog always compliments me on how patient and "polite" he is for a dog. Considering we lived less than a block away, I figured we try it out one more time... As soon as we walked in the door, the owner said, "Oh, you guys again, great... ugh." It was then that I realized it was not my dog that had a bad attitude. Upon picking him up that day she went to the kennel he was in, picked him up by the scruff and practically threw him at me. She said he was a total brat the whole time and he bit her during the grooming. I told her she probably deserved it and I walked out without paying. She didn't deserve a dime for the way she treated my dog and I that day!!! THE OWNER IS A TOTAL BRAT WITH A BAD ATTITUDE AND PROVIDES NOTHING BUT HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! AND by the way, my dog has been to a couple different groomers since then and not one has said a single bad thing about him. His current groomer calls me every six weeks, says she misses him and does all she can to fit his appt in during times I am available. :) read more

After bringing our dogs to Madras for years, we have decided to go elsewhere due to the lack of friendliness and interest of the staff. I always had the feeling they would rather be anywhere else than grooming animals. I understand this is a very difficult job but feel a friendlier, more welcoming attitude is needed here. As far as the grooming itself, I was satisfied but there are too many other options out there that actually act like they appreciate and welcome my business. I do have a very sweet tempered pet and the new groomer seems to enjoy her, I have never been told she is a problem, not even by the staff at Madras. I guess this just wasn't a good fit. read more

Helena has groomed my dogs for 20 years. When I lived in Tennessee I would bring my dog to her when I was visiting my family in WI. When we moved back to Wisconsin I would bring my dog in from Oconomowoc. When I wanted a Golden Retriever I asked Helena about breeders. She gladly pointed me in the right direction! We drove in from Wales and Waukesha to have her groom our first Golden. Se sent a beautiful card when our first Golden passed away. We now have another beautiful Golden and we drive her in to see Helena. She is an absolute expert. She attends continuing education seminars to improve her craft. She is enormously talented with the scissors and loves the challenge of a unique poodle cut. She is proud of her work and the business she has built over her 20+ years. It makes me sad to see negative reviews as she is more than willing to listen to a customer about her grooming. Maybe there was a miscommunication? Just talk to her and she will gladly work with you. I am so happy with Madra pet styling. My cockapoo has the most beautiful cuts every time. I tried another groomer based on price point (they just buzzed him, he had many nicks and itches for days after his grinning) and that just reassured the value of the services you get at Madra. I have never experienced any rudeness like mentioned from others. I feel so comfortable and confident taking Bear here. I am so impressed that I refer Madra to all my friends at the dog park. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Madra! Our dog Pearl can be a real pistol but she LOVES LOVES LOVES it here! She gets very stressed in certain environments but whenever we are in the car, or when we used to live close enough to walk, she would literally PULL us here! Even to just say hello to Helena and Erin. When we are in the car, she knows the route, she gets SO SO happy. We have been to a few other places and they are by far the most professional, kind, and loving groomers I have ever met. She happily jumps up on the nail table, which is a hilarious site in it's self, and will hold her paw up just waiting for them to grind her nails. She evens rests her head on theirs while they do her toes, often licking them in the face the whole time. I am not sure why others would have had a negative experience, it's unfortunate if they did. I wouldn't trust my dog anywhere else. We have since moved 20 minutes away and still come to Madra for grooming (even though there is another place 2 blocks from our new house) read more
