They've opened two more locations back home, but nothing compares to the original--this one will always be my go-to. I typically am not a donuts eater, but I was able to inhale four of these donuts no problem. They make them fresh every day. It is probably the best I've ever had. I'm personally not a huge fan of cake style donuts so I opted for the soft and fluffy ones and they were all delicious. My favorite was the jelly filled and glaze. I wish they had more of a larger selection but still so delicious. I am a huge fan you can tell they are fresh. I recommend getting there in the morning because they are so fluffy. I would consider this the top food place on the GOTL strip. Hands down some great donuts with excellent friendly staff. I was treated to donuts while we were in the area. I was told that this place has been open since the 50s, if not earlier, and that when the original owner retired, he sold the recipe to the new owner. Anyway, the donuts were Delicious! Im a fan of Krispy Kreme, but unfortunately we don't have one in our area. We have another chain, which the locals seem to like, and even though I can't mention their name, it's similar to the famous book by Dr Seuss named Horton hears a who. The yeast donuts melt in your mouth! So good, but a little pricey at $15 for a dozen, but what isn't pricey these days? Fortunately I don't live in the area, or I'd prolly end up spending all my cash buying this, while living under a bridge nearby. Seriously, try them! read more

One customer at a time but line was quickly moving. Each donut is a buck. About five varieties all of which were so very soft and moist at 945am on a Saturday. We stayed within walking distance of Madsen Donuts on our recent visit to GOTL and I'm so glad we did. We got there a little after 9 on a rainy Sunday and luckily there was only one customer ahead of us (though a line quickly formed behind us). There's really only space for two customers or so inside the donut shop. The service was fast and the girl who helped us was friendly. We opted for 4 cream sticks, 4 glazed, and 4 chocolate frosted and they were all delicious. The cream filled have a marshmallow based cream which was different from your typical custard or buttercream filled donuts, but they were delicious. It was $16 for that dozen, which I thought was very reasonably priced. I'd definitely stop here on our next visit! read more

I heard the hype on New Day Cleveland and read the reviews here, so when I was in Geneva-on-the-Lake this weekend for brunch I had to stop in and grab a half dozen donuts from Madsen. I admit I'm so disappointed. Not sure if the folks who reviewed before have never had a flavorful donut or if the glow of vacation or nostalgia is clouding their judgement, but not a single donut in my box had any flavor. The only hint of anything came from the peanuts and jimmies and jelly from 3 of our selections. The dough for the yeasty and cake style both seem to be missing salt or vanilla. The cream sticks (which I was most excited about) were chewy and dense with a shortening based cream filling that was not completely mixed, resulting in a unpleasant texture that coated my mouth in an oil-slick like film (which had a hint of vanilla aftertaste). I wanted to love these, but could not even eat them - that says a lot coming from a chubby donut-loving lady. read more

BEST DONUTS EVER! I don't know what else to say. My husband and I were blown away by how fresh, soft and light these donuts were. We had half a dozen of various flavors but do yourself a favor and just get yourself a dozen of the glazed. It's THAT serious! The staff was efficient and friendly and knew their donuts. The place was small but the lines were quickly taken care of, they were organized and clean. We heard from others that this place was the original Madens Donuts, it says a lot when they've been around since 1938 and are still that great. Running here next time we're in the area! Visited Geneva-on-the-Lake with my friend today and stopped at Madson Donuts. It was around 2 PM and the donut pickins were slim. $16 for a dozen donuts!! I thought that was quite pricey but I heard these were the best donuts around. Usually donuts are individually wrapped in bakery tissue and placed in the box. Well, mine were placed in the box on top of each other and my powdered sugar donuts ended up with chocolate frosting on the bottom and the chocolate donuts ended up with half of the original amount of frosting. They were quite small for the price and the powdered sugar ones were quite flat and half filled with cream. Quite disappointing for the price. Probably won't be back. read more

I've visited GOTL many times but never had a freshly made donut on the strip- what was I thinking?! Given that all of the other donut shops have since closed and this shop is across the street and down a little from Eddie's Grill, we decided to check it out before heading back home to the burgh. We went with a few donuts- glazed, apple cider, and a cream filled one. Brendan loved his donut and I really enjoyed my glazed & the apple cider one. SUPER fresh and delicious. Not too sweet. Just perfect. Donuts were affordable and they DO take credit cards. I loved this little shop and will be back when I'm back in Geneva-on-the-lake! read more

Disclaimer: I'm partial to a glazed, light and airy, freshly fried donut. If this is what you like, Madsen Donuts is the best hands down. The other commercial places have nothing on this little donut joint in GOTL. Unfortunately they are only open full time from memorial to Labor Day, and weekends from February, to late fall sometime. Whenever I'm in GOTL, my first stop is always Madsen. They come out of the fryer about 0730. Fresh is best, but later in the day is certainly still delicious. They offer a wide variety of donuts, but I can't bring myself to stray from a classic. I could easily eat an entire dozen, but stop myself at 3 so there's some left for the family when I get home. MMMMM. What could be bad about a donut shop, and specifically, one that is one-of-a-kind and not owned by a huge corporation? I tried the glazed, the sugar of which seriously stained my clothes when it dropped all over me (with every bite). My husband tried a cake-like donut with some sort of creamy frosting and "peanuts," which I think were actually pistachios since the donut reminded me a LOT of spumoni. Madsen Donuts, in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, will remain forever in my mind as having the best donuts. My all-time favorite has been the simple cake donut with chocolate icing. And anyone who moans about cake donuts being too dry is clearly getting their donuts from a below-par baker. Another popular favorite (judging from my family) is the creme stick. It's simple: pastry, creme filling, chocolate icing. Madsen also carries cake with cinnamon and sugar, cake with jimmies, cinnamon twists, jelly-filled, powdered cake, cake with nuts and a couple more I'm sure I'm forgetting. But it's the same, reliable variety each time. There is nothing complex about the donuts that Madsen carries. There's nothing complex about the store, either, which opened in 1938. There is just enough room to walk in, through a screen door that slams behind you, and order. There will always be a high school or college student to wait on you. And if you order a dozen, they will always tuck your donuts away in a white and blue-striped box. It's part of the charm that is Geneva-on-the-Lake. The donuts are great. They are more the traditional, heavy donuts than the air-fluffy machined kind you get at places like Dunkin, and so one donut is very filling. I like that they sell donuts all day long in season, so you can get some at noontime or pick some up as you're leaving to have for breakfast next morning, as opposed to many donut shops that are "sold out" and closed by noon. Plus they are making batches of fresh donuts all day, so what you buy at noon or later hasn't already been sitting around for 12 hours. You can even see the staff making them in gigantic bowls right behind the counter! Worth a peek through the window to watch the process even if you don't want to buy one right then. Warning: check your order before you leave the store. I ordered and I think, paid for 2 donuts, got the bag down the block and discovered I'd only been given one. Probably an honest mistake but still. We chose to split the one donut rather than go back to the store and argue about it since I don't think we got a receipt either, so how to prove that we paid for 2? Also when you order coffee here you have to ask for cream and sugar and then they are stingy and give you one pack of each for a giant cup unless you ask for extra. Given that this place is doing a good business in donuts all day, I don't think it would kill them to put out the sugar and cream so we can get the amount we like without having to ask and ask again. read more
