I'm glad I placed my to-go order online, because they were slammed. Since this location's grand opening was only 4 days ago & this is their first weekend since opening, I wasn't surprised. All of their food is freshly made and includes a freshness date on the back of packaged containers. I also like the fact they have minimal ingredients which are also included on their to-go containers. As soon as I got home, I devoured their Jalapeño Holly chicken salad! It was delicious with the perfect amount of mild heat. I could have taken it hotter, so even if you only like a little heat, this is a good option. I also ordered their Fancy Nancy chicken salad and pimento cheese, so can't wait to give them a try. Pro Tip: Before visiting, create an account on their website. You'll also earn rewards points for your online orders https://www.chickensaladchick.com/menu/271815 That way before you visit, you can read through their menu, because they have 13 variations of chicken salad as well as sandwiches, salads and soups. They also have a Quick Chick cooler for freshly prepared grab and go items. Not to mention their temping desserts!

It's just that kind of place that brings me so much comfort. This restaurant is reliable, unfussy, and really good at what it does. As is the case throughout the South, the fresh brewed iced tea is one of the highlights. One sip and it immediately tastes like home. My favorite thing on the menu has always been and will always be the Brunswick stew. It's absolute comfort food that's warm, hearty, and nostalgic in a way that hits every time. It's an Eastern North Carolina tradition, and Smithfield BBQ is one of the best in the business. As for other regional specialities, the hushpuppies deserve their own shoutout too. The slightly sweet cornbread batter is perfectly fried every time, which makes these little carb morsels crunchy on the outside yet soft and fluffy on the inside. I've been eating them dipped in ketchup since I was a kid and I'm not about to stop now. Quit quietly judging me, LOL! The bbq sandwiches are messy and not designed to be easy to eat on the go, but the bbq plates are the best deal. I love getting the pulled pork plate with potato salad (the best). Since I'm Eastern N.C. born and raised, I basically was born with a taste for classic vinegar bbq sauce. Smithfield's is terrific, and I love drowning my pork in that tangy goodness. Every bite seriously brings me back to lazy summer Sundays hanging out with my best friend in my Grandmama's grassy backyard. You can't put a price on those culinary memories.   Service is fast, takeout is easy, the dining room's small but cozy, and there's even a drive-through for when you're in a hurry. Smithfield BBQ is not trying to be trendy or fancy, nor have they ever been. It's just a place that serves really solid Eastern North Carolina BBQ done right. For me, Smithfield's isn't just a restaurant, it's a family tradition.

We were delighted to be personally greeted by none other than Vivian Howard -- James Beard Award-winning chef, restaurateur, television personality, and author. It was our first visit since Chef Vivian reimagined the restaurant into its current format: an intimate, chef-driven dining concept she calls "Chef New," inspired by one of her favorite restaurants, Chez Nous in Charleston, where a compact menu of six rotating daily selections keeps the focus squarely on quality and creativity. Chef Vivian herself seated us, and from that moment, the warmth and intentionality of the experience never let up. We were fortunate to be seated directly in front of the open kitchen, where we had the pleasure of meeting Chef Hope and watching the culinary team work with quiet precision. Every member of the staff -- from our server to the pastry and salad chef -- contributed to an atmosphere that felt both refined and genuinely welcoming. The prix-fixe menu, which rotates weekly, offered a wonderful range of choices. We opened with a starter of soft-shell crabs -- caught just two hours prior -- served with charred scallion mayo and a bright corn relish. The dish was extraordinary: delicate, fresh, and perfectly executed. My wife's Brussels sprouts, tossed with spiced peanuts and goat cheese and finished with a honey vinaigrette, were equally impressive. A generous pour of Sorgente Prosecco made it all the better. For our mains, I chose the flank steak, accompanied by asparagus with green butter and a silky root vegetable purée. My wife opted for the house-made tagliatelle in a shrimp scampi that she couldn't stop talking about. Both dishes were beautifully presented and thoughtfully composed, reflecting the restaurant's deep commitment to farm-to-table sourcing and local ingredients. The meal concluded with fantastic desserts and continued conversation with the staff, who were as knowledgeable as they were passionate. Throughout the evening, there was an evident attention to detail in every element -- from the food preparation to the way each dish was explained and presented. This is the kind of dining experience that reminds you why food matters. We will absolutely be back.

The Counter occupies what was once the private dining room at Chef & the Farmer. Decor is cool - bare brick, tin ceiling, polished cement floor, tables and chairs new but antiqued. An eclectic mix of music plays - a little too loud for my liking, but not so loud that we had to shout. Perhaps a dozen tables, plus a few on the sidewalk for when it warms up. The menu is simple, only a dozen or so choices. Some are old favorites, some new creations. A special of the day is offered. You order at the counter, and food is served at your table. You pick your table. We opted for an early dinner, arriving at 4PM on a Sunday. It was quiet in the restaurant, only us and and one other table. Service was good, but a little disjointed - one entrée arrived a full 5 minutes before the rest of the food. I tried shrimp and grits, the daily special. 6 shrimp, atop a bowl of cheddar grits, adorned with ground sausage, mushroom and roaster red pepper sauce. The shrimp are smoky; a crispy crunch to each one. Grits are creamy and perfect, complete with a few lumps. The sauce pulls it all together and adds the tiniest hint of heat. YUM! Also tried blueberry bbq chicken enchiladas. These are 3 to a serving; tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken prepared with Vivian's famous blueberry sauce. They're served in a shallow pool of poblano cream and topped with sliced radish, cilantro and cotijo. With a side of black beans. The chicken is the star.. it's moist, flavorful with the sweet/sour goodness of the blueberry sauce. Delish! Also tried a trio of sides - fried collards, hushpuppies and beets. The fried collards are a familiar favorite - deep fried collard leaves, crispy and salty. Hushpuppies are golf-ball sized, wonderfully crisp on the outside, moist and sweet on the inside. They're topped with apple & jalapeno preserves. Beets are served with slices of orange, topped with spiced and feta vinaigrette. To be honest, you could just order one of each of the sides (there are others) and that would be a meal! The counter offers wonderful food. Not quite the experience of a full sit-down meal (I really MISS Chef & the Farmer), but still - worth the drive to Kinston.

The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. I'd definitely go back.

Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.
