Whole Truth Lunchroom has a great mission, and the food definitely lived up to the experience. Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. A ministry of the church next door, Wilson's Whole Truth Lunchroom is a hidden gem. Located a few blocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Whole Truth does it again....my daughter went at my recommendation and picked up food for us. She loves it as much as I do...says the fried chicken is the best ever and lived the great service. This is a hidden gem in Wilson, NC and if your not a local you're not going to know about it. Located beside a church with great "Home Cooked" scratch made food daily. There isn't any microwaved pre-packed chain stuff here, nothing but great soul food cooked from the heart. They are only open a few days a week since the pandemic...but the fried chicken is light and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. If you can catch mustard salad, its the best (they don't serve it often), Haven't tried much else. The honey bun cake is good as well. Set-up is very simple, but clean. Anytime we're in the south we try to find a local restaurant with home cooked meals. I found this on Yelp and that's how we ended up here. It's cafeteria style I guess is the best way to describe it. We had the fried chicken, black eye peas, greens, potato salad, yams, and some sort of fried corn fritters. It was all good. Even the sweet tea was yummy. And they do have Koolaid. This is a great place for good Southern fare. The fried chicken is as crispy, tender, and delicious. The baked chicken was a wonderful surprise, as I have never had it made with eastern NC barbecue sauce, I recommend it highly. The squash had plenty of onions, just like momma made it. The sweet potatoes (or yams) were made fresh, not frozen or from a can. You will not need to add salt to your meal.
