Ruben is an artist and an engineer when it comes to tailoring. He's wonderful with delicate or otherwise fussy fabrics and notoriously difficult fixes, like alterations to jacket shoulders. I had a delicate alpaca sweater that had come unraveled at the seam; he fixed so expertly you can't tell it was mended. Some of the other reviews have expressed surprise at the cost of alterations, but as someone who's had experience with tailoring and garment design, I can say that a lot of tailoring that may seem easy is actually extremely difficult and time consuming. When I come to Ruben, I know my clothing is in good hands and I know I'm getting a fair price. Ruben's beloved father taught him the trade beginning in childhood, so tailoring is a family tradition and a point of intense pride. I just wish he took responsibility like a man. I went to pick up some jeans on the day he said they would be ready. However he said the pants were locked away in the back and that he couldn't access them until his son came in 30 min with the key. I am fine with mistakes like that. I was going to not make a big deal of it. I said "ok". But then he said if I came yesterday in the afternoon they would have been ready, insinuating that this situation was my fault. So not only did I not get the garment on time but he blamed it on me. Of course, he did not apologize for it being late either. Part of living in Los Angeles also is having to deal with moth mercilessly devouring your silk, cashmere, and wool clothes. While I swore to not buy any more of such materials, I had a few older items badly damaged by moth. I took them to Ruben at Maestro Custom Tailoring. I could not believe what an amazing job he did. I have never seen such masterful repair jobs on damaged clothes. He performed French weaving on a few pieces that was almost indistinguishable from the original fabric. It is normally an expensive job, but he gave me a huge discount. Over the years I have brought various types of clothes here for dry cleaning, alteration, and repairs. Ruben and his lovely wife Christina always top my expectations. They are like trusted consiglieri on how to care for your favorite clothes. Excellent quality tailoring for both vintage and new pieces. This summer I brought two dresses and Robert altered them wonderfully. The first was a velvet dress from my mother's closet she'd had since the 80's. It was fully lined, and he altered it to fit exactly as I asked. My second dress was a new, tea length Marchesa cocktail dress that was double lined with a full lace overlay. It was two sizes too big for me, and Robert took it in while keeping the original shape of the dress and taking in both layers of lining. The dress now fits like it was made for me and I can't wait to wear. Their prices are very fair, especially for complicated alterations. I wouldn't hesitate to bring more dresses or refer friends. I have used this facility for cleaning, alterations and custom tailoring. They are fantastic. A coat I needed several sizes smaller and it was a very small plaid. It was matched perfect and looked better than when it was brand new. The custom suits that were made were of a fine Italian wool, better than any store ever sells and the price was so affordable. We have used Maestro in the past for men's clothing and simple hem jobs and were impressed with the quality of the work . We needed to have a formal dress altered for a teenage girl and, after seeking recommendations, went back here. It was a horrible experience. He spent very little time pinning and marking the dress and more time complaining about the construction of the dress. We were stuck with the dress and just needed it to fit. We went back two weeks later and the dress had been taken in double what was marked. Rather than apologize and promise to make it right, the tailor and his wife ganged up on my teenaged daughter and body shamed her that it was her fault since he couldn't possibly have made a mistake. The redone dress has been picked up, and it is still not right. We are going to have to tape her into part of the bodice because it is now too big. We paid almost $200 for a dress that was not done correctly. I can live with mistakes and am willing to give people a chance to make it right. However, there is never an excuse for body shaming anyone - especially a teenage girl. I urge everyone to think twice before using this tailor for women's clothing. read more

Ruben is the best tailor around the whole San Marino, Sierra Madre, and Pasadena area fairly close to all of these cities. Works extremely well with urgent situations. I had a wedding to attend and had barely found a suit 3 days prior to the wedding and was not satisfied with the way the suit fit me. I had a pretty good experience here. I brought a Navy G1 jacket for 24 patches to be sewn on for them. I had a diagram so they would know where to exactly them on the front, back and sleeves. The project was tough, they told me it would take a month and that was expected. I told them to take their time. From time to time I called in to ask if the had any questions and they said, "no". It was about the 27th or 28th day and I was getting nervous so I called in to check in on them. The son answered the phone and said it was done. I hauled over there expecting it not to not prefect but it was the opposite. It was beautiful! The father laid the patches down to a 1/16th of an inch and fit them all perfectly. I've worn the jacket three time since I've had it. Every single time I've had compliments on it and once one guy cried in line at Disneyland. I wish I could show this jacket to you then maybe you understand. Most definitely anyone in the military would appreciate it. Thank you Maestro for an outstanding job! Reuben has probably done 20 pairs of pants for me over the last five years and I've never had a single issue. And even if I did, he's offered to have me bring them back in so he can fix them. I've been looking around for a professional tailor that can shorten the sleeves of my new leather jacket. As you know, leather is not easy to alter because it's unforgiving if you make a mistake. Precision is a must. I found somoene in Studio City who specializes in leather, but I don't want to drive that far (I'm currently in Monrovia). So I searched further and read reviews upon reviews from tailors closer to my location. Long story short, I didn't see any customer reviews that talked about leather alteration. I was gearing up to go to Studio City as a last resort, but a front store photo of Maestro Custom Tailor caught my eye while searching Google. On the glass panel, it says, "Expert Alteration." Those are the kind of magic words that I wanted to see so I called them up. A gentleman answered and told me that he can do leather. I was thrilled to hear that. Went there the next day and the gentleman took my measurements like a true professional. After getting a price estimate and pick up date, I left. Today, I came back to pick up my jacket and WOW! I'm totally blown away by the craftmanship! I mean, the work is so good that my jacket still looks original - as if it was never altered at all. That's a sign of an expert tailor who knows exactly what he is doing. This is my go to place from now on for my difficult tailoring needs. I had a wedding on May 13th, and I had a Valentino dress that I loved. I had only worn it once about two years ago. After that unfortunately I gained a couple pounds and the dress would not zip up. I took the dress to a dress maker but she looked at it and said there are no materials and that there is no possible way to fix it. But I didn't want to give up so then a friend of mine who happens to live in San Marino recommended I try a place called Maestro Custom Tailor in the city of Sierra Madre. So when I took my dress I asked him if he can do anything. He nodded with confidence and said, you have to give me time, and that it will cost you $85.00. He took my measurements and said he will call me for a fitting. So two weeks later I received a phone call that it was ready for a fitting. So I rushed over to try on the dress and when I put the dress on, it fit like a glove! He truly did a wonderful job. As I headed out, another client came walking inside and said "he is a master tailor." Overall, amazing service and I would recommend him to anyone! read more

Maestro takes his time to ensure that it's done correctly, and really went above and beyond to scout out the exact color fabric that would fit my skirt. I was so impressed with the end result, he actually made the alteration look like it was a design on part of the skirt! Brought in a suit to have it tailored here charged me upwards of 200 bucks. First suit I had ever gotten tailored wasn't sure on the price until everyone else in the wedding party i was in got their suits tailored for around 50 bucks. Even tried on their jackets and look identical fit the same. I would have saved about 150 bucks if i had just gone to a dry cleaner and gotten it done, but that is what I get for not shopping around I guess. End of the day the suit fit nice he does good work but so did other places for a quarter of the price. read more

Unfortunately, based on the strong positive reviews from others, I went to Maestro thinking that they could hem a dress and fix a torn strap on my heels -- kill two birds with one stone. I like to give my business to small places. For the dress, a chiffon sundress with many yards of fabric, they wanted to charge me $75 to the hem on the logic that it is akin to 50 pant hems. That was a ridiculous quote; I took it to my dry cleaners and they hemmed it for $28. I was also worried that their reference point was men's pants. It does appear to be mainly what they do -- men's clothing. And with the heels, since I was there anyway, I decided I'd leave them. They said that they'd charge $8 per strap, and there were 2 that needed fixing. They said they'd be ready by the following Saturday. I went, the Tuesday after the Saturday, and they apologized saying that the person who worked on them was very sick. I am sorry that someone close to them was ill, but I thought it was very unprofessional of them not to call or let me know. I called the following Saturday, the shoes having been in their care for 2 weeks now, and asked if they were ready. The man apologized again, saying that their uncle was still ill. I have sympathy, but what bothered me immensely was that if I gave them 30 minutes, they'd fix them for me. I thought - if it's only a 30 minute job, why didn't they take care of it 2 weeks ago? I declined, and told them to please not work on my shoes. I realize they may be experiencing some sort of hardship, but it is not an excuse for poor customer service. I've been to shops where, to make sure that they meet their deadlines, they pay for something to be handled at another shop. At the very least, they inform me so I don't have to waste my time. I will not be back. Maybe, if I were hemming pants like men's pants, or if I lived right by them, I'd give them another shot, but this was not a good first (and only) experience. read more
