We had such a nice and casual experience at Maevery Public House. It was packed when we arrived early, which presented us with optimal seating. I love those cushioned seats that hug you. We spent a good couple of hours here between drinks and eats. Considering how much we consumed, it was such a pleasant surprise to be under what I thought it would cost. Only a couple toes vs. an arm and a leg! The mezcal drinks were very good, along really with everything we had. Didn't get much in the way of pictures but hey, you should be dining anyways. Out of state visitors! Was recommended by my friend that lives here. We had 3 in our group. We waited a bit before the bartender showed and filled our waters (pretty sure we were not in his section). Fred was awesome! The restaurant sits in a tiny strip on a very cool looking street. The hostess sat us quickly to the left of the restaurant, a little strip of booth style tables. The lights above the table were not lit. Phone flashlights were needed to see the menu (old folks). Time was 5:30pm. Unsure why, but we had the bartender as our server (Fred). He was lights out! Food. I had the skirt steak. It was ok. The amount of salsa accoutrement was too much, it was the only thing on the plate and matched the length of the steak. The salsa alongside the steak you could tell was not fresh, it had a dull grayish look to it, with no fresh vibrance to it. The potatoes on the side were ok, probably more suited alongside the steak. Overall I'd say, if the middle of the Shepards Pie was cold that tells me it's not fresh made to order, and the not so fresh salsa, they just need to tighten up. Such friendly service here. It even ended with hugs from our server! We were here on a Wednesday night before our sailor's graduation from bootcamp. Got a call right when our food was served and we were worried our call would bother other patrons but also there was nobody in the tables directly around us. Stopped in for dinner on a Weds evening. It was busy with a good atmosphere. Kid friendly which meant a bit noisy but it wasn't terrible. Food came quickly. At our table we had a cheeseburger no bun, shepherds pie and an order of fish and chips. The fish and chips was shared by my mom and her husband. They were nice enough to bring it out on 2 different plates. The portion was very generous and tasty. The shepherds pie was ok, my brother said it was a bit salty for him. My burger was tasty. Maevery Public House has been on my "places to try" list for a while. We finally made it in last weekend. Maevery Public House is a great place if you are looking for something upscale but casual. The dining room has a modern meets retro dining club feel. We started with the pimento cheese appetizer. It came with homemade potato chips and a selection of toppers like bacon bits, jalapeño, and pickles. My husband had a hard cider and I asked if there were mocktails available. The sever offered to make their vodka blackberry cocktail non-alcoholic. It was great! For our main courses my husband had the pork shank and I had the shepherd's pie. Both were nicely presented and wonderful choices on a cold winter's night. We finished with bread pudding which was served flambé. Everything was delicious and the bill at the end of the night was surprisingly low compared to what we expected. I enjoyed every bite of my food! Had an excellent dinner with friends. Our server explained the specials, and provided us with recommendations. She was spot on with her familiarity and description of the dishes we we ordered. The establishment was nice and clean and had a mid century modern feel to it. I can only hope to make a dish like Amish chicken some day, the way the green tied into every bite of my perfectly cooked chicken had me wanting more. The ambiance was amazing, it was such a comfortable homey restaurant. the service was amazing, the staff was so nice & sweet. where this place lacks is the food, the flavor is just not there. very bland & i couldn't even finish my gnocchi because it lacked so much flavor adding salt didn't even help. the deviled eggs were delish though! maybe i'll return in a year or two & hope some flavor change has been added to the dish! read more

Catching up on Yelp reviews as I visited back in May. We arrived for a late lunch and it wasn't too crowded. The vibe is contemporary, well lit, and a nice space. I ordered a Manhattan, which was decent and overly sweet. We ordered a pretzel, which came out super fast and it was hot. However, it was extremely bland/dry. The Dijon mustard was good and it had horseradish so it definitely had a kick. The beer cheese was too watery and cold so it was not good. For my entree, I ordered the Beef brisket, which was pretty bad. The sauce was very average and was essentially Sweet Baby Ray's. Fries are excellent as they are super salty and crispy! My Dad had the Fish n Chips, and that was way better than my brisket. Service was good and prices are average. Overall, Maevery's is cool spot with some decent drinks and ok food. As a bar, it's pretty good and a nice addition for Lake Bluff. Unfortunately, I ordered some food items I didn't like, but I would be open to try it again. read more

The grits are a local strain of corn called "Bloody Butcher" with small reddish fleck in the seed. Don't be confused by the menu description. We had fried shrimp appetizer (a little salty in the panko breading) and brussel sprouts (very nicely done). Dinner special was filet medallions and shrimp. We were exhausted but hungry and honestly it was a bad choice to come here. It was obvious from the moment we walked in that the staff didn't see us as important. We ordered a burger and some fries. The burger was okay and the fries were bland and bot crispy. The place inside is super cute and probably angles more for date night than just getting food. So that's a bit on us. Found Maevery Public House on Yelp and realizing we were only a few minutes away, decided to try it. The place was full but we were seated in short order and enjoyed a very good meal. Service was quick, food was tasty, and all concurrent with the establishment hosting a wedding rehearsal dinner. Overall very impressive. When they opened the menu was fantastic and thank goodness b/c in 10 years it's barely changed--although the quality of the dishes drastically dropped off when they lost their initial chef. Because it's local I really want to love it but food is inconsistent, trending toward mediocre. Even something like their shepherds pie which is premade and has a consistently good flavor is almost never actually heated adequately. Perpetually disappointing and not worth the money. I found Maevery on here when in search for a burger. It was the week of thanksgiving and restaurants were closing early, extremely busy or just closed. I looked up the menu and sure enough burgers seemed to be good here so we decided to try it. My boyfriend and I walked in, were greeted and quickly seated. It was fairly quiet, which for us, was great- the place is very classy, has a bar and intriguing drinks. The menu had a variety of options but I could not pass on trying the burger, it was juicy and did not need any toppings to make it a good one. The homemade ketchup and fries were also tasty. My boyfriend got the smoked brisket and it was also delicious. I'd say for the price, it was worth it. We saw other options on the menu we'd like to try, a little more pricey but we will definitely be coming back! read more

The staff at Grace Church loves eating out at Maevery's, and Laura is the best hostess and waitress ever! The food is always amazing, as is the ambiance, inside or out. We wanted to give a special shout out to Mary Pat though today for an above-and-beyond delivery to our Pastor on his birthday. Been coming here for a few years now since moving to the north shore. Sarah and Ali are a blast when bartending as cocktails are always on point. Food is amazing; here's some pics from our last trip. :) Please bring Havana Club rum back :) It's $20 a bottle- Bacardi is so high school... or better yet, bring Plantation pineapple or Maggie's Farm rum in! Our first visit - and it was great! I had read about this modern American "pub" and gathering place and decided to surprise my husband with an unknown destination 2o miles from home. I guided him there with no information other than he could wear jeans (always a bonus). We arrived at 5:45 for a 6:00 reservation and a few tables were occupied in each of the rooms. Our server, Laura, could not have been better! She was knowledgable about the wines and helped me with my decision between two entrées. Laura, as well as our capable busser gentleman - and every other staff member we saw were busy and moving briskly around between the diners and the kitchen. This place is a well-oiled machine! My husband enjoyed his Matchbook Chardonnay (on tap). I started with a French Blanc de Blanc and finished with a very nice Jax Cabernet (thank you Laura). My husband loved the very filling deviled eggs as well as his Fish&Chips. IMHO, the highlight was by far the scrumptious Pork Shank over House Grits!!! This was a cute little restaurant in Lake Bluff. There were a few hiccoughs, but overall it was good. First the front door was difficult to open. So difficult we thought it was locked and they were closed. As we stood outside looking confused, some other patrons came along and gave the door a huge yank. Problem solved. I was hoping for a local craft beer, but got something in a can. I guess I should have paid more attention. RL had the fish and chips which were okay, but nothing special. This is probably my new favorite spot in my hometown of LB. The place isn't massive, it's quite cozy. They have 2 separate dining areas; one that includes a bar with a few tables on each side of the room, and then another area with tables and also booths. We sat in a booth and it was an ideal spot to have a good view of the restaurant. I ordered the saffron shrimp dish for dinner and it was outstanding. The great thing about this place is that you get serious bang for your buck. For a drink I had the Maple Rosemary's Sour, which was also very good. We had an early reservation for 5pm and stayed roughly 2 hours. By 7pm the place was full and there was a lot of action.
