We're going to the citadel theater so I looked for a restaurant that was close and I found this place on yelp so we decided to give it a try. My wife ordered a mushroom flatbread which she said was one of the best she'd ever had and I ordered a large salad that they made up the way I wanted it. I don't need cheese and I don't need a lot of other things so I told them exactly what I wanted on it. We were in the area and stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. They have a rare 'Happy Hour' on a Sunday. We had great quac and chips, and some really good sliders. Sadly they had no tap beer due to a wedding the night before. (Never heard that one before...) We ended up with a gin and tonic and a Sea Breeze. It was not busy but it took a while to get the food and drinks. The staff were very pleasant but I could imagine if the place was jammed the wait time would have been far longer. The majority of the patrons seemed to be Hotel guests or business meeting attendees enjoying a quick meal and a drink before ending the work day. The restaurant, located in the Hotel lobby, has a large bar and offers partial booth and table seating. The menu offers basic appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches and offers a few entrée selections. The cod in the fish & chips was good; however, the fries were limp and did not taste fresh. The grilled garlic chicken and asparagus was pretty good and the server was great! I would definitely go back if I had a colleague staying at the hotel; however, wouldn't seek out the Oaken otherwise for a night out. We had such a great experience here for a weekend dinner. We were looking for a dinned spot in the area and there weren't many options to select from. It was a very slow evening and the service was great. The Crispy Gochujang Shrimp starter was a highlight--perfectly cooked, generously sized shrimp with a tangy-spicy glaze that had just the right amount of kick. We split the Smash Burger and Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, and both were packed with flavor and super satisfying. The portions were generous, and everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned. Only miss was the truffle fries upgrade--not much truffle flavor, so I'd skip that next time. But otherwise, highly recommend for a tasty and casual brunch or lunch. Ok, this place is better than it has any right to be. I'm from Arlington Heights but was looking for a new place to try. Scrolled Yelp and found Oaken Bar + Bistro. Looked trendy, good menu, cocktails, etc. Made a reservation, drove 20 minutes, and thought we were in the wrong spot. Turns out it's located in the lobby of a Hyatt in a desolate corporate park (makes sense on a Saturday), and we were there on an especially un-busy day with a near empty parking lot. Almost bailed, but we were hungry so decided to give it a shot. And it was definitely worth it! Good cocktail menu. Had the charcuterie board appetizer which was very nice. At our table for entrees we had the vegetable risotto, lobster bisque risotto (March special), braised short rib, smash burger, and 2 kids meals. Everyone would recommend what they had and get it again! Honestly my expectations were so low at this point, and it more than exceeded them. I am just in love with this restaurant! The food, the service, the ambiance. Five stars! I had the short rib bolognese with a side salad dressed with balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was fresh and crispy, the vinaigrette super light but very flavorful. Now let's get into the bolognese! Pasta was cooked perfectly, the flavors were on point. I loved the way the beef was cooked, very tender and well seasoned. A good hefty amount of cheese. Amazing dish all around. The service was stellar, very attentive and friendly. I met a friend for lunch at Oaken Bistro Bar. There was a decent crowd for noon on a Wednesday. We had the smash burger and grown up grilled cheese. These familiar favorites are elevated with premium ingredients. We were celebrating my friend's birthday so we got a lemon cake. The cake was fresh but the blueberry compote was very tart. Since I made a reservation and I told our server that we were celebrating a birthday, they didn't charge us for the cake. Our server was nice but service was slow. Great service at this hotel bistro + bar. I ate here for breakfast and for lunch and was... whelmed. Not overly, not underly, just whelmed. The thing that kept me from going back on my last day of my trip was that the portion to price ratio is so far outta whack, IMO. My first meal here, a breakfast consisting of about 20 grams of yogurt and some fresh berries, clocked in at almost twenty bucks. I was so hungry after it that I was sneaking granola bars and nuts out of my travel bag. Next day, we had lunch here as a group and it was good. I got a Cobb Salad which is naturally filling since it has avocado, egg, chicken and other whole foods in it. I enjoyed it and felt like the ingredients were all good quality (except for iceberg lettuce! I didn't know that was still a thing with so many quality greens out there). So it's a bit corporate, a bit sterile, and a bit boring IMO, but it's also fine for what it is. Yummy little spot in the Forester Hotel! I came here with some colleagues prior to an event for work and it ended up being the perfect spot for a quick bite. The hotel looks brand spankin new and is really pretty! The restaurant space is beautifully done too, and there looks to be a great patio space for when the weather's nice. What a lovely restaurant located inside The Forester Hotel! This is definitely a nice spot for some dinner, lunch, or drinks. Our server, Betsy (I think that's how she spelled it but I could be wrong!), was super attentive and sweet. My party and I came here around 1:15pm on a Thursday and were sat immediately. Even though there was still plenty of open tables and no wait, there was still more people there than I thought there would be on a random Thursday in the middle of the day! The food was good. My cobb salad was pretty standard - for $20 I think it could've maybe been more plentiful. I also prefer a hard boiled egg than a poached egg in my cobb salad. I tried the truffle fries and they were delicious. My party also enjoyed their food. There's easy parking right out in front since this restaurant is part of a hotel. First, it's a hotel eatery. Staff is very nice but that's about it. Red wine, and I tried 3, all terrible. Braised short rib was for sure from a frozen block. Bip and bop, although not awful, was absent of promised bean sprouts and had to request side sauce, which was really watery. Lighting was way too bright to provide any sort of evening ambiance. When asked to dim the lights a bit we were told that some of the hotel guests had laptops, although none were in site. $200 tab + tip may be fine for travelers but way too high for the local experience we had. read more

The location isn't walkable to shops or other bars, but both the hotel and restaurant are gorgeous so it can be a fun night for bites and cocktails. We made a reservation for girls night not knowing how busy it would be on a Monday night and while we didn't need it, the large space was about half full. On a Thursday or Friday night, you might want a review. I had a mezcal cocktail, ceviche, goat cheese and honey, pork belly with the Hesselbeck potato, and crème brûlée. There were three of us that shared the apps and dessert and ordered an entree and drink. With the tip, we each paid $100 so definitely on the pricier end. But I enjoyed everything I ate and drank. I'd recommend it all too. The ceviche and pork belly were probably my favorites. Service was good, but worth noting it can be a little slow. They're definitely cooking to order, but I did feel like the apps shouldn't have taken so long since they were both cold options. So much to say, so little time. OK, I'll start with time. We were there on Saturday of 4th of July weekend. Our server, Brianna, was delightful, efficient and fun. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn't back her up very well. It took an hour for us to get our food on what appeared to be a very slow night for the cooks. But the good news is that the food, everything from apps to main course, was truly excellent. Perfectly cooked (after all they took an hour to make it right), great presentation and absolutely delicious. The crispy shrimp appetizer on our "Best" award. But my short ribs bolognese was most excellent. One of my companions ordered sea bass...it took the kitchen twenty minutes to tell him they were out. Inexcusable. We used to take turns with my sisters hosting the big family Thanksgiving dinner, however, the pandemic interrupted that tradition, and we still have not resumed.  This year, we saw a promotion online from Oaken about their prix fixe 3-courseThanksgiving dinner that was appealing to us, and decided to spend our small family dinner celebration there.  Oaken was introduced to Hubby and me through a Yelp Elite event in early summer this year, we liked it so much that we knew we would return.   Many years ago, when my Mom and one sister of mine had a trip to Hong Kong during Thanksgiving, my family had a Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant in Wheeling.  That restaurant was packed that night.  We didn't know what to expect at Oaken.  Afterall, it's a hidden gem of a restaurant tucked inside the Forrester Hotel (a Hyatt Place Hotel) in Lake Forest.  When we arrived, we found that it was very quiet on Thanksgiving night!  There were only several tables occupied when we arrived, including a big family of around 8 with some children.  After they left, there were 2 other new tables. The place was very clean and modern looking both times we were there.  There were 2 servers, both young men.  Our server, Eber, greeted us politely and said "Happy Thanksgiving" to us, and let us pick our table.  We opted for a booth by the end of the restaurant.  Even though Eber seemed very young, he was very professional, and was knowledgeable of their menu and promotion policy.  He was courteous, pleasant and patient the entire night.    We ordered 2 glasses of the Federalist Chardonnay ($16 each), and 1 Prickly Pear Mojito ($15) mocktail per Eber's recommendation. The Mojito was refreshing and pretty good, but probably not worth $15 in my opinion, under $10 would be more reasonable.   Now onto the food.  We had reserved the Thanksgiving prix fixe dinner curated by Chef Christian Alejandro ($55 each x 3).  The first course was the Double-Smoked Ham Croquette with watercress puree and shaved panela.  The outside of the croquette had a nice crisp to it, and the inside was flavorful, we all enjoyed this course.  The entrée was Turkey Three Ways featuring crispy thigh, smoked turkey rillettes, leg confit, and detectable sides like potato mousse, cranberry, and onion stuffing mousseline. All the turkey meats were tender and tasty.  The crispy thigh was like a turkey schnitzel/cutlet breaded and pan-fried to perfection!  While crispy on the outside, this turkey thigh schnitzel is extremely juicy and tender on the inside, and it was piping hot!  Portion was good, so, Daughter and I had leftovers to take home!  The dinner concluded with the Pumpkin Crème Brûlée served with pecan praline ice cream and delicate chocolate shavings.  With the ice cream, it was a perfect dessert.  However, when the ice cream was gone, the last few bites were not very smooth like normal crème brûlée, and a little bland.  I still enjoyed this dinner very much, though.   As I have signed up for Oaken's online newsletter, I was eligible for a free "sapling" (starter).  However, there are rules: I cannot redeem it with another promotion (like this Thanksgiving prix fixe dinner), and it expires in 30 days (still had 6 days left).  Interestingly, this free offer is also valid as a take out!  So, I got an order of Beef Tenderloin Empanadas to-go!  We would be too stuffed to enjoy the extra appetizers anyway, so it was a good thing that we had them to take home.  The empanadas were very good, with crispy skin on the outside, tender and tasing beef inside!  The chimichurri, lemon tomato sauce (actually an oil) added depth and taste to the beef, but the empanadas were good without the sauce too.   Everyone was very nice and friendly, our server Eber checked on us several times without interrupting.  The other server who doubled as host, the manager served us the entrées, the bartender Dragan who posed for us, and the young lady behind the hotel counter, were all very nice and friendly to us, and said "Happy Thanksgiving" when we were leaving.  We had a good dinner and would highly recommend the Oaken! read more

I visited Oaken Bistro for a girls' night out. First off, if you've never been there, note that GPS can't find it. My maps repeatedly directed me to the end of Field Drive, where the only buildings are the Lake Forest Municipal buildings and Halas Hall. Others had the same issue, so we were a little late finding the restaurant, which is not a restaurant building like I expected, but actually inside the lobby of the Hyatt/Forester hotel. The space was nicely decorated and a pianist played and sang across the lobby, joined at times with another vocalist. The music was fun, but on the loud side. Once they got going, it was harder to have a conversation while we ate. We started with drinks and appetizers. The Christmas Spirits cocktail (contained Aperol, Elderflower Liqueur, Rosemary Simple Syrup, Prosecco) was festive and tasted great, but at $16 I'm not sure I'd order it again. The chicken fried cauliflower was good and the bibimbap appetizer was great, and large enough for several of us to share. For dinner, I ordered the grilled eggplant Parmesan. No complaints there! The flavors were great and I would order it again. Our server was helpful and attentive without being obtrusive. Overall, this was a nice first experience at Oaken Bistro. The biggest thing I'd suggest for them to change would be to mention on the website that it's inside a hotel so that diners can find it. read more

Our server Juan seemed to have been the only one working that morning. From the room service calls, to bartending, and serving the tables- he was doing a great job checking in on us. We arrived prior to a lot of the other four or five tables. But still felt as though we waited for quite some time for our food. Working in the food industry, we completely understood the length of time and being short staffed. The food was good. I had the avocado toast. My favorite part were the potatoes, they we crispy on the outside. My husband had the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, he was a bit disappointed that there weren't as many blueberries as there were in the picture, because it look like it came with a compote of some kind. Unfortunately after that the experience started to take a downward spin as we only had one server for the whole brunch crowd and he was definitely busy with many other tables. Our food was not anything special as taste was lacking on both the avocado toast my wife received that had too many flavors going on. I received the cornmeal blueberry pancakes that had cornmeal pancakes but whole blueberries instead of the preserve blueberries it has pictured on its online menu. I am giving four stars because our server was a very nice person but unfortunately our meal did not hit the spot. Hopefully this was an off day. Our food and drinks came out really quickly and our server was very attentive throughout the night. My mezcal spritzer was good! Not too strong and on the sweeter side, which is how I like my drinks. We got the chicken fried cauliflower appetizer to share. The portion was generous and I really liked the sauce that came with it. The cauliflower itself was not fully coated and not too crispy so I don't think I would order this again. I really enjoyed my baby kale salad and my scallops were cooked perfectly. Immediately we were seated at our table and were offered to take a drink order. What I love about this place is that they continue to change the menu based on seasonality. The staff is friendly and attentive, giving wonderful customer service. The food is quite delicious and unique, presented with a tasty display. It arrives at the table with reasonable proportions. As our first time visiting the Oaken, we ordered Shakshuka, which we've never had before, along with the Open-faced waffle-battered chicken sandwich.
