MagDolls cut and color on the top (spots and color-blocked), color correction received the following week at another salon. :(

I never write reviews (especially bad ones), mainly because I feel horrible doing so and I hate confrontation. I am doing so only because of the encouragement to do so from my husband and other stylists that fixed my hair after visiting MagDolls recently. I found MagDolls looking for a place with great reviews and somewhat good prices. I went in to get my long hair cut and colored. I hadn't dyed it in many years. Unfortunately, the cut and color turned out very bad. I had requested a cut that was a few inches lower than my shoulders, and also some blonde added into my hair (not ombre, but some natural highlights to be woven in). I explained I hated warmer, brassy tones on my hair, and wanted more ashy or icy highlights. I have posted a picture of what the results were from the cut and color I received at MagDolls (on the top), and the color correction I recently paid for at another salon (on the bottom). When I left MagDolls, immediately I knew the color was much more orange and brassy than I had wanted, but felt so awkward complaining, especially since my stylist was very kind (and had also stayed an hour past closing to finish my hair; a total of 3 hours by the time I left)! The cut turned out much shorter and chunky than the picture I had shown my stylist. I will be also getting that corrected soon at the other salon to make it less embarrassing. Sad to say, this was a very bad experience for my hair and my wallet. Overall, I paid $175 at MagDolls (including tip), and have since paid another $175.00 to get the color job corrected at another salon. The other salon did a phenomenal job correcting the color, and I am hoping they can salvage the cut soon too when I can get back in.

Mag Dolls is a hair salon, barber and all around good time founded by Michelle Hogue. Formerly, Michelle was my barber of choice at Bishops on NW 21st in the Nob Hill neighborhood. I have never had any kind of allegiance to a particularly barber before I met Michelle and now I don't want to ever go to another one. Went into Bishops for my last hair cut and was informed that Michelle had opened her own shop. Though I was disappointed not to get my hair cut that morning, I was more than happy to hear that she had her own place. She's that good. Generally hair cuts, for me, range anywhere between a despised chore and a mild irritation. And the consistency of the result has had an even broader span between "I Like it" and "WTF?". A hair cut from Michelle, however, is a pleasure on every level. Aside from having a high level of craft and skill she also appears to have an intuitive artist's sense of what will look good on your skull. I always walk out of her haircuts feeling better, brighter and hotter. Who cares if anyone else thinks so? The experience of the haircut itself is really fabulous as well. She's gentle and, unlike some barbers and stylists, she's a pleasure to talk to while she works. There are little details that are cool as well. She always offers to trim my eyebrows. Kinda weird because I don't do that sort of grooming and at first I was like, "Huh?" But then I let her do it and, damn if I didn't look better. Had no idea I was wandering around with bushy brows until that. Mag Dolls also has an interesting belief, so stated on their web page, Mag Dolls "believes that in helping you to look your best you will feel great and love yourself. Loving yourself is the key to loving others." What I like about that is that it suggests that Mag Dolls has a mission apart from making money. Something they believe in that DRIVES them to make money and succeed that isn't the money and success for its own sake. And that's something for their audience to believe in about them. Believe it and get yourself a new haircut at Mag Dolls. You'll dig yourself.

I am so happy that I found Michelle (on Yelp). She has a way with cuts and color that makes your hair do what it wants to do around your face. I used to often go on the weekend or after hours so my hair would be casual but, because she is so in demand, I've had to go a few times during work hours - I could tell that she was studying how I fix my hair for work and what I was wearing and that just gave her more ammo to make some positive changes on my behalf. I love that she knows what to do to my hair that's in my best interest . . . Go here - she will make you beautiful.

October - season for change! Haircut by Sara Thompson.

I've come to MAGDolls three times in the past few years and have tried a couple other hair places in/around town. MAGDolls is by far my favorite. I'm very lazy with my hair, yet I enjoy having long hair, so I usually come in with split ends and layers that have gone kind of flat. "Save my hair!" I plea to them with puppy dog eyes. And boy, do they! I first had Terra Commander, who sadly, has moved on from MAGDolls. She gave me a lovely hair wash, which I had never had done before. And she gave me my first "stylish" cut - so I was nervous, as I had never had more than just a simple, straightforward cut or trim of my hair before. The result was great. It made me feel so much more confident and helped me view myself in a better light. The second and third times I went in, I had Sara Thompson. She's very nice to talk to (- we commiserated about PSU). She cut off about 4 inches, eradicated my split ends, and layered my hair into a light, feathery cut. It felt so nice to get that weight off my head. And most recently, I went in for a maintenance trim and an update on my layers. I tend to be stingy, but the $30 to get my hair (and myself) feeling great 2-3 times a year is worth the price for me. MAGDolls will likely be my go-to salon for the forseeable future.

The color that Sara did on my hair. I asked for super fiery underneath. I feel like it turned out perfect.

From the moment I booked her services online, she was kind, patient, and super quick to email me back and answer any questions that I had. She never left me hanging. We scheduled a trial run for my make-up, and Moriah was so gracious when she came to my home. She was right on time, and also so incredibly warm and reassuring. I felt like I had an old friend in my house, and I could have hung out with her all day! Her heart of gold aside, this girl knows her make-up, ya'll. She is incredibly talented! Cat eye? No problem. Fake lashes? Please. She's got you. I gave her very little direction because I didn't really know what I wanted, and she somehow crawled into my thoughts and made me look like a (MUCH) better version of myself! On the wedding day, Moriah took her A-game to even the next level. She was early to the venue (which I REALLY appreciated), and she was all set up and ready to go by the time we girls got our act together. It was like herding cats the day of the wedding, and Moriah was so patient and helpful. Oh, and did I mention this poor soul had to drive all the way out to Hood River for our wedding? Well, she did. She did, and she didn't complain once! She did my best friend's make-up, my mother-in-law, my mom's, and my bridal make-up. She made every person that sat in her chair feel special, pretty, and pampered. My friends and family all totally loved her, and each said Moriah was the best make-up artist they had ever encountered. She turned all of our fresh faces and tired eyes into something amazing! I am telling you, my make-up looked EXACTLY the way I envisioned it. The colors, the lashes, the "look".....she nailed it. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Living in Portland, finding a HMUA who specializes or is experienced with Asian brides is a huge challenge (compared to my hometown of LA). I'm so grateful to have found Shawna! Shawna has years of experience, is so talented in her craft, and is wonderful to work with. She is so professional (clean, prompt, responsive), down to earth, calming, and open to feedback -- all qualities a nervous bride wants on her wedding day! I love Shawna's work for my wedding day. She made me feel beautiful, the hair/make-up lasted through the day/night, and her work photographs beautifully (without it looking too cake-y IRL). She also did my mom's hair and make-up, which my mom ended up loving (especially since my mom's has had poor experiences with professional hair and make-up artists in the past). In addition to my wedding hair and make-up, Shawna did two sets of eyelash extensions for me. I'd never gotten lash extensions before, but she was so patient and instructive in explaining the process and teaching me how to take care of them. I cannot recommend Shawna enough for your hair, make-up, or eyelash extension needs!

Shawna made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day! I normally wear minimal makeup in my daily life, so for my wedding I was concerned about looking way overdone. Shawna absolutely nailed what I asked for. She made me feel like a more elegant, polished version of myself. She knew right away how to accentuate my features but still have a natural look. The touch up kit made it easy for me to fix my lip color in between photos. For my hair, Shawna did an amazing updo that I never would have been able to do myself! I gave her some creative freedom with the hairstyle and was so happy with the result. An updo is not easy with my hair because it's very thick and heavy, but somehow it stayed in place all night through lots of hugs and dancing. The lash extensions were done a couple days prior to the wedding. She had a few different options ranging from natural-looking to more dramatic. I loved that I didn't worry about sweating or crying off mascara or strip lashes during my wedding, and they looked beautiful! I was a lash newbie but Shawna gave me easy instructions on how to care for them. The process does take a couple hours if you're getting a full set, but it's absolutely worth it. I definitely recommend scheduling a trial if you can, to give you the opportunity to try different options ahead of time, show her inspiration photos, etc. It made me feel much better going into my wedding day knowing we already had an idea of the look I wanted. I think she probably sees herself as a stealthy business woman, making sure to look out for her own best interests (which would be something I can appreciate). However, her inability to compromise or even communicate clearly when a resolution is needed are not the qualities of a good small business owner. What's really frustrating though, is that after all her shortcomings on the business side of things, she absolutely does not make up for it in the realm of talent. When I initially experienced how cold Kelli can be in her emails, I thought "well, if she communicates this poorly but still has good reviews, she must be REALLY good at what she does." No. I will leave it at that--the answer is no. I thought about writing out all the details of my experience with Kelli, but then this review would be way too long. I will just say that by the end of my interactions with her I had given up. Every email she sent left me feeling more upset than the last, and I didn't want that kind of energy leading up to my wedding. Rather than seeking a fair resolution or any of my money back I chose to just pay her the remaining balance owed, take the services she was willing to give me, and then never talk to her again. To you, Kelli: I get that you deal with a lot of weddings and contracts all the time. But for me, this was my wedding. It was a very special day for me. And I wanted to be able to talk to you, as a real person and as the artist that you claim to be. Instead, I got a cold robot who quoted the contract at me every time I tried to have an open conversation about what I needed. It made me feel like we were at odds instead of being on the same team. There is a difference between being direct and being abrasive. You can be direct and still be friendly. In the end, when I told you I was upset and why, the attempt you made at having a warm, positive tone came across as insincere and condescending. Also, the fact that you didn't even check your own contract before mis-quoting it at me repeatedly added a whole new layer of confusion to our already frustrating communications. UPDATE: A day or two after I posted this review Kelli emailed me reminding me of a clause in my contract regarding reviews and asking me to take this review down. (Everything else that was said in her long email just solidly reinforced my previous experience of her.) I was aware of the clause and am not in breach of it, so will not be removing my review. It makes you wonder though, if there have been other poor reviews that went unposted due to that clause.
