This is bonkers. The stylist who cut my hair has now posted a 5 star review (?) about herself to clear the air about this situation. As I stated in my original Yelp review - I contacted MAGDolls privately the day after my haircut but never received a response. I was wondering if they hadn't received it so that's why I decided to leave a public Yelp review. Now Ivy, the stylist, is trying to make me out a crazy villain who wrote "a snowball of emails to [her] employers and a terrible review." The SINGLE message I sent to them PRIVATELY was a heart-felt response about my experience in which I explained my thought process while leaving the salon and my decision to not say anything in person. I was giving the salon the benefit of the doubt with my first message but now I know they just purposely ignored my private message and only scrambled to respond and save face once I posted to a public forum. Go to MAGDolls, maybe even go see Ivy. I really liked her as a person when we first met - she had a friendly personality and seemed like someone I could relate to. Perhaps my poorly executed haircut was an outlier experience. Who knows? What I see now is shady customer service and an effort to turn this around and blame the victim. After having great experiences here before, I walked away disappointed with my last cut. I should have spoken up sooner because it ended up being choppy, too short, and completely off from the style I thought I had communicated. Everyone here is still friendly, and I still think it's one of the best deals in Portland, but I probably won't be coming in again for a while. I never write reviews (especially bad ones), mainly because I feel horrible doing so and I hate confrontation. I am doing so only because of the encouragement to do so from my husband and other stylists that fixed my hair after visiting MagDolls recently. I found MagDolls looking for a place with great reviews and somewhat good prices. I went in to get my long hair cut and colored. I hadn't dyed it in many years. Unfortunately, the cut and color turned out very bad. I had requested a cut that was a few inches lower than my shoulders, and also some blonde added into my hair (not ombre, but some natural highlights to be woven in). I explained I hated warmer, brassy tones on my hair, and wanted more ashy or icy highlights. I have posted a picture of what the results were from the cut and color I received at MagDolls (on the top), and the color correction I recently paid for at another salon (on the bottom). When I left MagDolls, immediately I knew the color was much more orange and brassy than I had wanted, but felt so awkward complaining, especially since my stylist was very kind (and had also stayed an hour past closing to finish my hair; a total of 3 hours by the time I left)! The cut turned out much shorter and chunky than the picture I had shown my stylist. I will be also getting that corrected soon at the other salon to make it less embarrassing. Sad to say, this was a very bad experience for my hair and my wallet. Overall, I paid $175 at MagDolls (including tip), and have since paid another $175.00 to get the color job corrected at another salon. The other salon did a phenomenal job correcting the color, and I am hoping they can salvage the cut soon too when I can get back in. read more

Mag Dolls is a hair salon, barber and all around good time founded by Michelle Hogue. Formerly, Michelle was my barber of choice at Bishops on NW 21st in the Nob Hill neighborhood. I have never had any kind of allegiance to a particularly barber before I met Michelle and now I don't want to ever go to another one. Went into Bishops for my last hair cut and was informed that Michelle had opened her own shop. Though I was disappointed not to get my hair cut that morning, I was more than happy to hear that she had her own place. She's that good. Generally hair cuts, for me, range anywhere between a despised chore and a mild irritation. And the consistency of the result has had an even broader span between "I Like it" and "WTF?". A hair cut from Michelle, however, is a pleasure on every level. Aside from having a high level of craft and skill she also appears to have an intuitive artist's sense of what will look good on your skull. I always walk out of her haircuts feeling better, brighter and hotter. Who cares if anyone else thinks so? The experience of the haircut itself is really fabulous as well. She's gentle and, unlike some barbers and stylists, she's a pleasure to talk to while she works. There are little details that are cool as well. She always offers to trim my eyebrows. Kinda weird because I don't do that sort of grooming and at first I was like, "Huh?" But then I let her do it and, damn if I didn't look better. Had no idea I was wandering around with bushy brows until that. Mag Dolls also has an interesting belief, so stated on their web page, Mag Dolls "believes that in helping you to look your best you will feel great and love yourself. Loving yourself is the key to loving others." What I like about that is that it suggests that Mag Dolls has a mission apart from making money. Something they believe in that DRIVES them to make money and succeed that isn't the money and success for its own sake. And that's something for their audience to believe in about them. I am so happy that I found Michelle (on Yelp). She has a way with cuts and color that makes your hair do what it wants to do around your face. I used to often go on the weekend or after hours so my hair would be casual but, because she is so in demand, I've had to go a few times during work hours - I could tell that she was studying how I fix my hair for work and what I was wearing and that just gave her more ammo to make some positive changes on my behalf. Beth did a great job, and the conversation wasn't super annoying. I often find myself in the chair of someone that just won't shut up. One hairdresser I went to told me all about her cheating boyfriend and sex life. That's a no-no. I enjoyed [half of] a Sessions beer and great company. We even listened to Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. I've come to MAGDolls three times in the past few years and have tried a couple other hair places in/around town. MAGDolls is by far my favorite. I'm very lazy with my hair, yet I enjoy having long hair, so I usually come in with split ends and layers that have gone kind of flat. "Save my hair!" I plea to them with puppy dog eyes. And boy, do they! I first had Terra Commander, who sadly, has moved on from MAGDolls. She gave me a lovely hair wash, which I had never had done before. And she gave me my first "stylish" cut - so I was nervous, as I had never had more than just a simple, straightforward cut or trim of my hair before. The result was great. It made me feel so much more confident and helped me view myself in a better light. The second and third times I went in, I had Sara Thompson. She's very nice to talk to (- we commiserated about PSU). She cut off about 4 inches, eradicated my split ends, and layered my hair into a light, feathery cut. It felt so nice to get that weight off my head. And most recently, I went in for a maintenance trim and an update on my layers. I tend to be stingy, but the $30 to get my hair (and myself) feeling great 2-3 times a year is worth the price for me. MAGDolls will likely be my go-to salon for the forseeable future. read more

I've been coming to MAGDolls for a long time, back when they were located in a tiny little space with one of this big garage doors that slide up onto the ceiling. The current location is fun, they are always changing things up a little bit to better suit their styles. If you come in after a long day of work you can even get a beer to help you chill out while you're getting your hair done. The first time I came in Michelle took the time to listen to me and my concerns, she worked my long hair into a pixie cut that looked amazing and was easy to style. I have really thick, curly hair so that isn't an easy thing to do! I have never had a bad hair cut here. I've had my hair done by basically everyone that works here and they are always super nice, fun, hip, and they do a great job. I do suggest making an appointment. They say they accept walk ins but I've been there on 3 different occasions where the hours say they are opened but the door is locked. All of those times is when they only had 1 stylist so it made sense. Which brings me to my only complaint, they cannot keep staff. When I say I've had my hair done by basically everyone it isn't because I've been coming for forever, it's because the staff is constantly changing. I've gone when they had a full staff and when (like now) the owner is the only one who works for the company. She's so adorable, soft spoken.. actually reminded me of a Marilyn Monroe type, kind of gentle and yet fragile. She's definitely an artist. She worked with my short hair cut and gave it a pep talk. She brought it back from its strange space and gave it a more current look. The color she used was of two shades to give it some depth which came out quite lovely. I'm going to take partial responsibility for my poor review, because I should probably have done a preview for my makeup, but didn't have any time. I'd give this one star, but two of my bridesmaids got their makeup done the day before, and were very happy with it/looked great. I wish I could say the same for me. I showed up on my wedding day for my makeup. Everyone knew it was my wedding day. I'd stated it when making the appointment (everyone was very, very pleasant and helpful with that) and we repeated it--along with my timeframe--when we checked in. This information was received by a very unfriendly gentleman working behind the counter who then introduced himself as my makeup artist. I don't need to be best friends with people so I wasn't too bothered. But after very minimal communication (I showed him a picture, which he barely seemed to glance at, and mentioned that I wanted false eyelashes, which he either didn't hear or just ignored) he turned me towards the mirror and I won't hold back here, it was a catastrophe. Granted, the entire time he was applying blacks and grays to my face, I was slightly dubious, but as a non-makeup person, I trusted he knew what was up. Well, what was up was that I looked like a corpse. A corpse with enormous black circles around my eyes. I kind of didn't know what to say--we were getting close to the time that I was supposed to be at the venue--and I assumed he wasn't quite done yet, so I said, "Hey, can we get some, uh, color into my cheeks? I look a little dead." and asked him to please get rid of the darkness under my eyes. Without a word, he strode into the back and returned with another woman. He didn't say a single thing to me the rest of the day. The woman he brought was very helpful--I can't recall her name but it seemed that she was just in the shop by chance, as we concluded by the other hairdresser at the salon commenting 'she's not supposed to be here today' when the woman walked in. Well, thankfully she was. She immediately said, "Don't worry, we will fix this," and went to work. The end results, although we were now running a little late, were significantly better. She was also much, much nicer and friendlier. The original makeup person rang up my order and barely uttered the words 'goodbye' as I left. No 'congrats!' no 'have a great wedding!' or whatever. Maybe he was embarrassed that I was unhappy with his makeup, seeing as his coworker came over and gave him a 'you're okay, buddy!' back rub. I don't actually care, because it was my wedding day, and he wasn't even polite, and then he didn't do a good job and got obviously mad and butthurt when it was pointed out to him. I suspect he's still in training, which REALLY makes me wonder why someone would do that to a client on their wedding day, but whatever. I still expect to be treated somewhat decently, and even if I wasn't getting married, the attitude from the start was that doing my makeup was a burden, even before I was displeased with it. read more

I found my hairstylist! I've been living in Portland for 11 years and I've been changing hairstylist after hairstylist. Sometimes, it's not because the haircut, but also because of the service. Like y'all know, service in this city can be up and down like roller coaster rides. I won't have any problem with bad haircuts and bad customer service, I found Michelle at MAGDolls. I found MAGDolls 1/2 off first haircut when I enjoyed a frozen yogurt at Active Culture. I saw their community message board and grabbed the MAGDolls card. 1/2 off of haircut is always a good deal especially since I was still looking for perfect hairstylist for me. I checked out their website and for haircut it's very reasonable. $30 for haircut with shampoo. 1/2 off would make it $15. SCORE! So I called Michelle and made an appointment. I didn't have a haircut for about six months. I was trying to grow it out and see how I liked it, but turned out to be I'm a short hair girl at heart. I was excited for my hair appointment. When I got to MAGDolls, Michelle greeted me with warm smile. This woman has a beautiful warm smile and just because of that, I know that I found my perfect hairstylist. She washed my hair, asked what I wanted to get done, layers, bangs, length, and pretty much I told her that I wanted it to be shorter and the rest is up to her. She used her razor and forty minutes later I had a brand new do. It was really quick, I think it's because she's such a good conversationalist. We chatted like we've met before and no awkward questions and answers. I'm so happy that I found a bad ass hairstylist in this city. Finding a new stylist is like re-joining the dating pool after a long relationship. Even if the breakup is cordial re-entering the teeming waters is akin to hitting happy hour in the Pearl wearing your trusty lime green polyester leisure suit. Sure, that'll get you noticed but so will a juicy head wound which brings me back to the search for a new stylist cuz while a bad haircut won't kill you sometimes you wish it would. While I lurrve our last stylist, having to schedule appointments 2 months in advance cuz she only works 1 day a month was simply untenable. Found out about Michelle on Yelp & other unnamed websites & after talking to her on the phone & determining that, yes, she does razor cuts I booked appointments for me & Capt Hook who for the purposes of this review will be referred to as the Walking Chia Pet--his hair gets so curly when it grows out one of these days it may strangle me in my sleep! Despite being around the corner from the ever popular New Deal Distillery, the salon is so tucked away off the beaten path that unless you're going there for an appointment, you'd never walk by & think, "Hey, I need a haircut," which is a shame cuz you're definitely missing out. The space itself is cozy with cool murals & they've recently expanded into the space next door making room for couches to lounge on while waiting for your not-so-better-half. Michelle is very sweet & funny all while wielding a mean razor. She's up for just about anything I throw at her & has me leaving the salon with my edgy anime-esque tresses ready to take on any killer robots or happy hours that may happen to be menacing the greater PDX area. And even better? The Walking Chia Pet not only leaves looking like a white collar professional but he continues to look good as it grows out weeks later...that is until the spongy chia-possessed curls take over 2 months later. And did I mention that they have their own happy hour? M-F 3PM-7PM get 20% off haircuts & waxing and Sat & Sun from 9AM-12PM it's 20% off haircuts & color (wouldn't hurt to call first to make sure your stylist is working & participating in HH) And for those of you who can't swing the HH timetable they have a haircut rewards card that starts out at 10% off & increases by 10% off each time until your fifth cut (50% off!!) which calculates to only paying full price every 6th haircut. Considering a full price haircut runs ~$30, that's pretty sweet Scrooge McDuck. I love my haircut from here!! I have really curly hair, and I don't trust many new people with cutting it. I found Magdolls on yelp (I typed in curly hair cuts) and decided that I was going to take a risk and trust all the 5 star reviews. I was a little hesitant because my last yelp haircut venture was not positive, but whats life without risks, right? I got a cut from Michelle, the owner of the salon. On top of the fact that she is AWESOME and super chill and nice, she told me that she specializes in African American and mixed hair, which is kind of what my hair is like. She told me she usually does dry cuts, which freaked me out because I had never had someone do a dry cut on me before, but I figured she knows what she doing. I love, love, love my new haircut and I highly recommend Michelle to anyone!! The only suggestion I would make is you give yourself an extra 5 minutes to figure out where you're going because the salon is in kind of a funny spot. read more

Hair is serious business. I know so many girls who have gotten terrible haircuts around town, which makes stress levels high when trying a new hair stylist. Good thing yelp is around to give good recommendations like Michelle and MAGDolls. Everyone saying that Michelle puts you at ease and is easy to talk to is spot-on, she made this dorky chick feel right at home in her chair and magic hair hands. I showed her a picture and told her to use her best judgment. She changed a couple of things, and it looked fabulous. The second time, I pretty much put my hair in her hands and again, it turned out great, frames my chubby face well and brings me into a 'cooler' generations of haircuts, since for so many years it was just long and plain. I can't stop raving about the haircut, or looking in the mirror. All I have to do is blow-dry it, not even any styling product, and it curls under just perfectly. To cut to the chase, all these reviews about Michelle is true. Until yesterday, I went to random hair stylist just to get my hair trimmed due to the fact that I just don't trust anyone with my hair. I'm asian, I have long, thick, very straight hair and no one has ever known how to make it look good. I always waited to visit home (Tokyo) to get my hair cut. However, I haven't been home in 3 years now and my hair was starting to look heavy, long and just plain boring. I must have spent over 2 or 3 months trying to find someone. Like others have said, it's like dating - or worse. Yelp saved my life, though! I actually had heard of this salon through a past Groupon, but I never bought it. I read all these raving reviews about Michelle particularly, and I had to risk it. Finding the place isn't that difficult if you use common sense. Park on the street (plenty of parking in that area) and go around the building. The place is super tiny but I loved it. Michelle greeted me and she is the most adorable person! We chatted about how nervous I was and how everyone else has failed me. She listened attentively to what I was saying and it made sense to her! Hooray! After a fairly long discussion over how the operation was going to go, I let her get at it. She was the most casual, laid back conversationalist which I really appreciated. I work in a field where laid back conversations never happen, so I just sat back and enjoyed it. Once the scissors were in her hand, it was like an extension of her arm. She moved switfly yet carefully, and was doing things all the other stylists failed to do. It didn't even take that long but at the end, I had let her chop off what looked like a medium sized furry animal onto the ground. That is a HUGE leap of faith I took with Michelle and it was completely worth it. My hair looks so amazing and she even took into account the fact that I do not use hair products at all. She washed my hair, dried it, used no product and voila! My hair looks absolutely fab! I can't emphasize how great my whole experience was - not just the end result, but from the start to the conversation to the service to the end. I even got a happy hour discount! Amazing. I'm a longtime cut and color client of Sara. She has a wonderful style á la Presley Poe. Through the years I've had many unique and wonderful hairstyles and colors inspired by everything from a desert sunset to Lisa Frank (complete with glow in the dark highlights!) She's a true artist. Give her a few ideas and she'll turn you away from the mirror and get to work. She's always been very open to feedback on the rare occasions I didn't like how something came out. As I've changed how I want to present myself she's been there every step of the way to enthusiastically help me find the next hairstyle. I owe a lot to my experiences with her. Okay, the photos you see coming from here are beautiful, and maybe my experience was a rarity, but I wish I gotten what these girls recieved. I came here because of the great reviews and the photos. But that is not what ended up happening . . . This place did not do a great job on my hair. They allot themselves 1/2 hour for a hair cut. I was in the chair for 56 minutes before I absolutely had to leave-- and she wasn't even done! I told her what I wanted and even showed her the style I wanted. Its nothing new or interesting. I see girls with it all of the time. She said that she knew exactly how to do it. I trusted that. I watched her as she cut and noticed that she was going at it differently than what I've seen other do. I've had this hair cut several times over several years, so I am familiar with how they do it and with what tools. But I didn't stop her, because I thought "To each her own". After about 20 minutes of watching her not getting anywhere near close to what I had asked, I had suggested that she use the shears with the teeth on them, as I know that is what others have used to give me several choppy uneven type layers I was wanting. She used them, but just to feather out the last inch of all of my ends. She gave me no layers at all! I've had this done several times done right and wrong. And this lady didn't seem to know what it was that she was doing. She told me she was 'finished' like 5 times, and each time I asked her if she could take my hair 'in' more (not up). Each time I asked her, she trimmed my ends and was cutting my hair 'up' and was making it shorter, not thinner. Finally, after looking at the clock, I told her that I absolutely had to go because I had no more time left to do this. When it came time to paying, I was honest with her and told her that I did not feel comfortable paying the price tag because she was not finished with my hair (as far as I was concerned) and that she wasn't listening to me as to what I was wanting her to do. I also showed her the pictures again and told her that my hair looked NOTHING like the photos, and that she had been cutting my hair shorter and shorter. Any longer in the chair and I would of had a bob up to my ears. She tried dickering with me on the price, and I told her that I understood that she did in fact worked the whole time, but because she wasn't listening and was not coming close to what I asked her, that she was NOT done, I told her that I might come back in later and have her finish it if I had the time. She told me that she had someone else that did that to her and they never came back in. Which is a red flag to me. I left feeling bad, and uglier than when I went in thanks to her. I had even told her before sitting down that I had a high school reunion coming up and that I was going to be in a friends wedding that was also coming up soon, and that I was wanting to look good for these big events. By the way, her name was Tiffany. I know she got a lot of good reviews on here for being excellent, and that is why when I made the appointment, I asked for her specifically, but I really wish I didn't. read more

Thanks to Yelp, I found MAGDoll's! I was looking for a salon to have my eyebrows waxed. Michelle did an awesome job. She's warm, considerate, gentle, and kind -- all great traits for a stylist -- and the price was really great. She's also dedicated. She called me a couple of hours before my appointment because she's had a cold, and wanted to see if she could re-schedule me. When I explained about my crazy schedule this week, she kept my appointment, and did a fabulous job. I highly recommend MAGDolls Hair Parlour for eyebrowing waxing. So excited to find this place! I was in desperate need--like almost had the scissors to my hair--of a haircut. I didn't want to spend a lot and usually go to one of the hair schools downtown but with parking/driving, didn't want to deal with the hassel. And now, I may just keep going here! The space is really small but they have four chairs and a little seating area where you can enjoy water, a hot beverage, or a beer. The stylist that I had (oh no, I forgot her name!) was really great, listened to all the complaints about my hair, and did a perfect cut. Their happy hour specials are also great! read more

I tried Mag Dolls based on reviews I found on Yelp and am so happy I did! I went to Terra for a hair cut a few months ago and LOVED my hair. She fixed my bangs that were having some major issues and my hair still looks good, a few months later. I am not one to get haircuts as often as I should but I will definitely be going back to Terra when I do get my hair cut again....as a matter of fact, I had been looking for a new hair stylist and I think I found her! The prices are great Mag Dolls and as long as you remind them about the coupons or discounts you have, they will honor them no problem! I brought in a coupon for 50 percent off a no wash haircut walked out paying under 20 bucks. Hells to the yes. I just went back to Mag Dolls last week to have Terra wax my eyebrows and she did a lovely job! Although, I am not a huge fan of the hard wax, the waxing job was spot on and you really cannot beat the prices. Some fancier salons charge 30-40 dollars for eyebrow and upper lip waxing and I paid 14 at Mag Dolls...um, sign me the eff up! What I really love about Mag Dolls is their online scheduling. I do not have to get on the phone during my busy work day and make an appointment. I can just pop on their website and make an online appointment at my earliest convenience. That wins points with me! The salon is pretty convenient for me, parking seemed good and the shop is pretty freakin' cute. I used to have long (dyed) black hair, down to my butt, and got so tired of the constant upkeep on the regrowth that about 6 months ago I decided to chop it all off and go pixie. Since then I've been looking for a reasonably priced stylist who does amazing work on short hair. I've found one who did amazing work but the prices were too damn high! I've found less expensive places but never got amazing cuts from the stylists there. It was starting to become really frustrating as I wanted a stylist I could be loyal to but the ones I liked were just so expensive!! Well, I think I hit two birds with one stone when I stumbled across Terra at Magdolls. The prices are very reasonable and she hooked me up with a really fun, cute, funky haircut. And she also gave me some tips on styling it a couple different ways. Although, I don't think she gave me the Happy Hour discount even though I was there during Happy Hour. Friendly service and one of the best deals on a haircut I've seen. I brought my daughter in for their $20 dry cut "do whatever the f*@& you want" special -- in which the stylist has free rein over your hair. From the description, my daughter had hoped for something OUTRAGEOUS. But as promised, they do what they want, and what she got was a very cute, well-executed version of the exact haircut she's received for nearly twice the price elsewhere. LOVE LOVE LOVE ~ Someone get me a mirror that straps to my neck & stretches out in front of me so I can admire my new look all day long... and a blue ribbon, or gold medal, or a bouquet of roses or "queen" sash or something for Michelle of Magdolls! I swear if there was a Olympics of customer service for hair salons, she'd win the top spot!!! If there was one word to describe the gal it's be a toss up between INTEGRITY and HEART. Her listening skill blew me away because I have found that this is a key element to achieving success in reaching the style you want with a stylist. I have NOT gotten my hair designed at a pro shop regularly... my hair is almost 3 feet long, so I've always just gotten the ends trimmed at a 'basic' shop and had a certain gal at a pro shop that did a little style cut to my wispy bangs. Why not have the same lady do both? Well she wanted to charge me up the rear to do the whole thing! Then I met Michelle & her price was reasonable & I loved her manner so I said I'd give it a shot and I'm SOOOO glad I did! I've already referred 3 people to her because of the quality and service. I'll give you ONE example of what I experienced: Michelle scheduled time with me without having another appointment following me too closely so there was plenty of time to talk about what I wanted to do and we got to play around with ideas and be sure we were clear about things BEFORE getting started at all. Then after she made a few cuts she'd check in to make she we were on track and after the cut was done we talked again about the style & how I liked it and she went in again to adjust exactly where I asked for modifications. THEN she suggested I live with it for a week and come back in for a check-up, FREE OF CHARGE, to make any adjustments that I saw fit at the time. I did exactly that and she did make exactly the adjustments I asked for and did not expect anything for it (but I tipped her a healthy tip anyway which she actually tried to refuse more than once!) She took the time; she saw the fine details; she saw the big picture; she remained patient & in tune with my intentions; she talked about products - good & unnecessary; she talked about care tools; she accommodated ideas I came in with AND contributed new ideas without trying to have me go in a direction she preferred. Hands down the BEST service and quality of attention to skill in the actual cut that I've ever experienced and did NOT rob the bank!!! If I had a harem to care for... you'd take care of my ladies! (I usually do a "If there's a negative..." when I give high marks - well, she tried to refuse a tip for a check-up... that's it! Naughty girl - Take the money! LOL! ) read more

Should have done this last week... but I finally just touched back down into LA. I was on a road trip up and down the Pacific NW and decided to chop off all my locks. On my way to Portland, I read some really great reviews and decided to make an appointment.... and I'm so glad I did. Michelle did an amazing job on my hair. Funny thing is I have so many options in LA and still I'm glad I choose this girl. Most of the time whenever I want to do something with my hair, stylists want to talk me out of it.... and Michelle just went with it. She not only knows what she's doing, she really puts you at ease. Engaging with her was so easy. I plan on coming up during the summer and getting a cut again. Thanks Michelle :) Pros: -You're not going to get a better hairstylist. She's fucking rad, and one of the nicest girl's to ever lay a pair of shears to my hair. -The price is unbelievable!!!!! I've never spent less than 100 bucks where ever I go.... My bf pays almost the same amount for half the time! Cons: -Can't really say much...The only real complaint I hear is that people seem to want her to answer the phone.... but give the damn girl a break. She's the only one there half the time, and if I was getting my hair cut I wouldn't want her spending half the time in-between cutting my hair to answer the phone. Leave a message and if you're worried that you won't find the place call 30 minutes ahead of time. -Just an FYI: her salon is behind the front side of the building, close to where the bike shop is.... I finally got an appointment with Michelle, albeit at 8am in the morning on a work day. Yes, I told my boss I had an "appointment" :). I'm glad I found her. I am new to Portland, having moved here at the end of December 2011. I left the best stylist I ever had back home. I seriously wish I could have brought her with me. Only person that has ever been able to cut my extremely frizzy wavy/curly hair well. So when I read the reviews back in February for Michelle and MAGdolls, I thought, well I just have to check her out. Alas, it was hard to find a date that worked out. I ended up going to another salon back in April. It was, meh, for lack of a better term. I had read decent reviews of that salon too, but was put with a stylist that did not have much experience. I'm sorry, but if you've only been cutting hair for 2 years, you probably are not that familiar with VERY FRIZZY half curly half wavy hair. She did ok, but nothing special. She played it safe, cutting very little of it and then not styling it. Boo. If i'm going to pay you to "get my hair done", I would like it styled too. Finally, I couldn't take any more of it. My hair, outgrown, wild, thick, and frizzy, made me look like I just stuck my finger in an electric socket (when left curly), and flat ironing that much hair is a night mare. So in comes Michelle. She was super sweet and down to earth. She did exactly what I had asked for. Color was a little off, but I chalk that up to me having incredibly porous hair. It took my last stylist a while to figure out the right mix, etc with color on me. However, Michelle wanted to assure me that she will get the color right, and scheduled me in for another appointment in a few weeks (on a Saturday too!) to fix the color. Overall, I'm super happy with Michelle. I think she is going to be my new "gal". read more

I just went to see Michelle at Magdolls for my first haircut today...at last, I've found my Portland stylist! I've been here for nearly a year, and after a pretty lame haircut from Dosha I gave up on getting haircuts for awhile. After reading about Michelle here on Yelp, I got inspired again. Thank you, Yelp! I love my haircut and Michelle is awesome. She's about as down to earth and friendly as people come, and she's seriously talented...her prices are VERY good. I just got my hair cut by Tiffany --- wow! It looks great! (see my profile photo) I have long medium thick hair which is very fine and has quite a bit of wavy curl in it. I've been growing it out long and it has been a struggle to find a hairstylist who could do all the things I wanted; bring out the curl, keep the length, make it frame my face nicely, AND be hip and flirty as well. I got the Groupon, read all the rave reviews and called to make an appointment. Even on the phone she was extremely comfortable to talk to. It took me a few minutes to circle the area and hone in on the entrance to her shop (facing the parking lot, not the street, nor the inner alley thingy). Even when I'm right in front of the door, it seems to be kind of camouflaged. I like to think it's because you have to be a truly magical person to find it and not because I just suck at finding doors. Michelle is like the Hair Whisperer. I hit her with paradoxes like "I want big hair but I want the volume thinned out!" and "I want a mullet but not really!" and she knew E X A C T L Y what I was talking about. She also seems to communicate with my hair itself because now I can just roll out of bed and WTF it always looks AWESOME. This never happened before. I am not even exaggerating. My hair looks so friggin hot that random people have complimented me on it. All my blog readers love it. All my friends keep gushing over it. Even guy friends have complimented it. I went in for a simple $5 bang trim a couple months later and people thought I got another sexy fresh haircut. And for weeks and weeks nonstop, I keep getting complimented on how awesome my hair looks. I've even had friends ask if I curled it because she layered it in such a way that it emphasized my natural waves that usually die away after they dry. I've been wanting to move out of my apartment for a while now and, now that I've found her just blocks away, I can't bear to leave this neighborhood at all. I just can't! It took me a year to find her but I now have a "the One" stylist! Michelle is also super easy and hilarious to talk to. She's seriously one of the most adorable people I've ever met. Can I keep her?! Okay, I'll add to the fray. First off, MAGDolls is the fourth hair place I've been to in PDX in the 6 years I've lived here. I have zero brand (and apparently services) loyalty, and though I really liked the prior most recent person I was seeing, the downtown locale was just too much hassle, in terms of parking tickets, lack of online scheduling, and actual prices. MAGDolls is a dream. Yes, you may have to schedule a bit out but who cares? It's online, and what, you didn't know that you were going to need to get your hair done at some point in the future? I love Michelle, but I keep hearing (both on yelp and in person from friends) that all the gals here are the bomb. Don't expect a fancy Aveda-esque salon. That's totally not the point here. It's been a while since the time I was at MAGDolls. A friend and I went in here because of great reviews we saw on Yelp. We didn't get in with Michelle, but with one of the newer (at the time) stylists. Although we had a bit of a hard time finding the place, the atmosphere inside was delightful. Our hairdresser was thorough and polite. Nothing too memorable, hence why I can't remember her name, but produced very good quality work. She took almost an hour with my medium length haircut which was a long time, but it was one of the best haircuts I've gotten because she had taken her time with my thick and unruly hair. My friend came back for a great brow wax with Michelle and had enjoyed a nice cold beer on the house while waiting. Overall, a great experience, and can't emphasize enough - happy hour hair cuts! read more

I'm a picky lady and tend to ask for some pretty wild transformations when it comes to my hair. I'm hell bent on Pravana color and after a few searches around MAGDolls came up. I sent over an email, received a lovely email back from their salon manager and booked my appointment with Kylie. I could not be happier. I have her some serious growth to have to bleach and a pink that we were worried wouldn't lift. She managed to make my hair look amazing without totally destroying it or having to cut a ton of it off! Not only does she know what she's doing but she's a delight to be around. Michelle is easily the best stylist I have ever been to! I moved to Portland in November and was nervous about finding someone to cut my very, very curly hair without making me look like a mushroom (curly haired people, you know what I mean!). Every time I go to MagDolls I get a cut done by Kylie. I can't say enough great things! I have been combing PDX for 11 years looking for someone who could give me the cut I truly want. Ever since stumbling across Kylie at MAGDolls I have not been disappointed. It is always exactly how I would do it if I could do it myself (if not better!) and always looks great growing out too. I have NEVER had so many compliments on my hair, both from girls and guys, than I have since coming to see Kylie. She is easy going, extremely talented, really listens to what you want done and then delivers. Plus she is always pretty quick to get you in and out too which I love! MAGDolls is also a great little salon with a laid back atmosphere, always friendly staff and the prices can't be beat! After a decade of salon hopping, I have finally found the one. I always loved my experience at magdolls. Staff is extremely warm and welcoming and they do magical things to my hair. They respect a clients request, and charmingly get the job done. I use to go to Kylie but she is now in Seattle. My stylist was Sara jr hair stylist and I had a clippers cut done. I asked for an A line bob, along with an undercut and side buzz to be a fade with design. The only complaint is that im a stickler for lines for my undercut, and had to touch it up at home (im sure if I noticed it in the shop she would have fixed it!). I decided to cut my hair in Portland on a whim after looking at numerous hair salons around the SE area. I mean, people there are bound to be more creative than every other hair salons in my area. I decided to try this one, and got an appointment with Terra. She was pretty nice to talk to and definitely know her stuff. I asked for a shoulder cut, which ended up slightly above shoulder since I guess my hair is kinda bouncy, but I absolutely loved it. I used to hate getting shorter hair because they make me look like I'm 14, but Terra really made it work, and the layers are really great, gives me more options to style my hair. I really loved the products she used to wash my hair, they feel and smell great I've been getting compliments from a lot people over this length of hair I never thought I could pull off. I wish I thought of colouring it since I know they'll do a good job on it, but it didn't came to me until later. Maybe next time when I'm in town read more
