Living in Portland, finding a HMUA who specializes or is experienced with Asian brides is a huge challenge (compared to my hometown of LA). I'm so grateful to have found Shawna! Shawna has years of experience, is so talented in her craft, and is wonderful to work with. She is so professional (clean, prompt, responsive), down to earth, calming, and open to feedback -- all qualities a nervous bride wants on her wedding day! I love Shawna's work for my wedding day. I was lucky enough to have Shawna do my hair, makeup, and lashes for my wedding in 2019. She also did the makeup for my bridesmaids. I can't say enough positive things about her! Not only is Shawna professional, clean, and efficient, all the things you want in a makeup artist - she is also so creative, talented and personable. Shawna made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day! I normally wear minimal makeup in my daily life, so for my wedding I was concerned about looking way overdone. Shawna absolutely nailed what I asked for. She made me feel like a more elegant, polished version of myself. She knew right away how to accentuate my features but still have a natural look. The touch up kit made it easy for me to fix my lip color in between photos. For my hair, Shawna did an amazing updo that I never would have been able to do myself! I gave her some creative freedom with the hairstyle and was so happy with the result. An updo is not easy with my hair because it's very thick and heavy, but somehow it stayed in place all night through lots of hugs and dancing. The lash extensions were done a couple days prior to the wedding. She had a few different options ranging from natural-looking to more dramatic. I loved that I didn't worry about sweating or crying off mascara or strip lashes during my wedding, and they looked beautiful! I was a lash newbie but Shawna gave me easy instructions on how to care for them. The process does take a couple hours if you're getting a full set, but it's absolutely worth it. I definitely recommend scheduling a trial if you can, to give you the opportunity to try different options ahead of time, show her inspiration photos, etc. It made me feel much better going into my wedding day knowing we already had an idea of the look I wanted. I love Shawna! Lets talk personality first. Shawna is super sweet and down to earth; your appointment feels as if you're just talking and catching up with a girlfriend you've lost touch with. We probably talked about everything from our dogs to favorite spots to eat in LA (especially K-town!). First off - I'm a dude! I only get make up done for photo and video shoots. I'm from Sacramento and have a MUA I use regularly - but in LA, I have no connects. I'm wary when I meet a new MUA only because I'm a guy and I just need the basics! Through a mutual friend, Shawna came on board for my recent photo shoot in Marina del Rey. The moment I met her, I was at ease. She had all her tools, including her positive demeanor and approachable smile. Once we got settled in the yacht, she went right to work on applying the basics (Again, I didn't need too much, but I needed SOMETHING). Not only did she get everything perfect, she kept an eye on me during my shoot (we were out in the ocean on a yacht) and applied touch ups to my hair and makeup as needed. Shawna Kim MUA is hands down the best makeup artist I have had the pleasure of working with in LA (and everywhere else in the US for that matter). Many makeup artists in this industry can either be too heavy-handed or far too light in application - she intuitively knows the perfect look for you (and knows what looks best on camera, which - if you are an artist - is essential to your success in Los Angeles). I hired her for my most recent headshots for both hair and makeup and not only are they EASILY the best headshots I have ever had taken, but the amount of work I have gotten from these headshots has multiplied THREEFOLD. I fully believe that is because she is so fastidious in making sure your look matches the artist you are and the person you express yourself to be. Another thing I must add is that she has a fantastic personality and loves communicating with you. She gets down to business, but does not "bulldoze" her clients in the slightest. I highly recommend anyone who needs their makeup done to book with Shawna! Her knowledge, talent and personality makes the experience of getting your makeup done one to keep coming back for. As we all know, no two faces are the same. I experienced first-hand, and also looking through her portfolio, that Shawna is an artist who caters to and highlights each individual's unique facial features - this is SUCH a key factor while looking for a MUA. Having "Asian features," it's challenging to find an artist who can work the shape of your face, our eyes especially. I've had artists apply eyeshadow on me as if I had a full lid (I have a semi-monolid btw) and the outcome just never looked right. Shawna did my makeup and hair for an engagement shoot. She came early to the location and did an amazing job on both the makeup and hair! I loved how I looked after she finished working on me. She's a great makeup artist and you can tell she cares for the work she does. She's also very friendly and easygoing, which is a plus. I'm an Asian with monolids, and monolids are kind of a pain to put good eye make up on...but Shawna knew what she was doing and she did an amazing job! i am 100% sure anyone who hires Shawna Kim will be just as pleased as we were for one of my best friends' wedding. she brought in her friend/colleague Marleni as our hair stylist & together they did a phenomenal job making all 6 of us so glamorous for the special day. girls & i were particular with what we wanted (not over the top, more natural, also had a need for hypoallergenic makeup products). i've had my hair & makeup done before by a variety of professionals & this experience is by far my most favorite & i hope to be able to use them again. Shawna is a very professional & organized individual; provided a scheduled timeline, asked the right questions to prepare us for an early morning of glam, & made suggestions when appropriate. the morning ran VERY smooth & together we were able to fill the room with lots of fun & laughter. timing was PERFECT. we even had plenty of time to do touch ups in the end. personally, i felt my hair & makeup stayed intact the entire evening (which i was so impressed about!)--- note, i was on hair at 6:00 AM & makeup at 9:00 AM & the Wedding Reception didn't end until 11:30 PM... also note that i was crying my eyes out at the Ceremony!
