I saw this place on Instagram and was like "wow so pretty must eat there for Instagram purposes" - which I did, but I also want to advise you that the service was great. The decor is super cozy and the lighting is super cozy, at nighttime I imagine it's even cozier but I wasn't there after dark so this will remain a mystery to me until the end of time. Only small complaint was that if you order the veggie pot pie, they could use some non-vegetarian sides to go along with it. I'm not one though, so I ate so much ham on my peas. Went here for the first time with my sibling after we just strolled around looking for spots and ended up stumbling upon an absolute gem. The meal was insanely good with substantial, flavorful appetizers and stellar main courses (a braised rabbit with mustard cream sauce and a roast chicken in a tarragon sauce respectively). The decor is unique, the food exceptional, and the service provided by our waiter, Paolo, combined to make one of the better food experiences of our lives. Tucked a few steps off of a busy street (and, unfortunately, a huge empty hole of a construction site when I was there), Maggie Jones's is about as cozy, homey, and romantic a place as there is. Perfect for a chilly night. The dining room is in near darkness, but for candles planted in empty bottles, with a couple of overhead lights just barely glowing. Bread is offered table side from an enormous bowl, and a little dish of radishes and (limp) celery and carrot sticks in a kind of "Seven Seas" ranch dressing appears. Wine by the glass is served by placing a giant magnum of unnamed house wine and an empty glass on your table; you serve yourself, and then the contents of the bottle is measured at the end of your meal to determine how many glasses you had. After looking at the menu, I asked the waiter to choose for me. He chose nothing that I was thinking of order, but man were his choices delicious. The onion soup and beef stew (which they called beef pie, although there was no crust) was so delicious, warming, and refined. The apple crumble dessert was fine--idiosyncratic in that the crumble was invisible in a bowl brimming to the edge with a sweet white sauce, which wasn't initially very appetizing to look at--but not on the level of the starter and main. On the right night, definitely worth a trip. read more

Classic British fare in an intimate setting. We started with a Stilton mousse that was flavorful but not overpowering. Main for me was their chicken artichoke pie. Honestly, this may be one of my most pleasing restaurant experiences lately. The interior different and unusual, something that makes you impression when you first come in, which makes me like this place even more. The atmosphere is unique, cosy, and welcoming. The food here tastes authentic and fantastic, as well as the service. I like their selection of traditional English dishes. The food seems to be prepared with freshly picked products and with care, almost feeling like the meals are home-made. Prices are a bit high, but I find them reasonable for the quality of the food. There are many things I love about London, one of them being the in-your-face juxtaposition of Old and New. Sleek skyscapers and 1000 year old cathedrals. The prim royals and the uh...not so prim royals. You get the picture. Anyway, Maggie Jones embodies this paradox. The servers are New. I've been here multiple times, and it seems that no one over the age of 35 is allowed to work here, at least not in the dining rooms. The attitude is New. The waitstaff is completely laid back, and will stop and chat with you. We were once here on New Year's Eve, and judging by the raucous revelers in various parts of the restaurant, most of the clientele are New. The building is Old. Stuff is hanging from every possible surface, worn floorboards, and creaky staircases. The food is also Old. No, not the actual food that you eat, but the cuisine. It's the most hearty, delicious, comforting, traditional British food you can imagine - exquisite roasts, delicious veggies, things topped with cheese, accented with delectable cream sauces and so forth. So there you go - Maggie Jones. Old and New in one hard-to-find, yet worth the effort, address. Add it to your list of "must dos" while in London. read more

The setting/ambience is the best part -- antiques and old tools/utensils decorate the walls, along with dried flowers, giving it a nice country feel without appearing to be trying too hard. Kedgeree, Cauliflower Cheese, mashed potato, pies, homemade soups, it's all their on the menu. £5 for starters and £7 for mains. They even have a specials board and a cute waiter... perfect! The place itself is super cute, cosy nooks and crannies to snuggle in, plates, jugs, saddles nailed to the wall. And not in a comical, tacky way. This actually looks like the inside of a pub dining room close to the village my parents live in. The staff if a little snarky about the fact we wanted to try almost all the sides and only one main between us were very helpful and our food came out super quick. This really is one of the best dining options in the area, really it should be 5 stars but I think I'm just going to have to try it again to make sure! read more

I simply cannot understand the good reviews for this place. I might have given it 2 stars on the basis of food and price - I had a chunk of tough and overcooked lamb (ordered rare) for £18 with no accompaniments. My partner had a rack of lamb that was mostly fat and also overcooked for £22. Essentially the food was close to disgusting at very high prices, although the vegetables were ok at about £3-4 extra. What was shocking about this place was their attitude to gluten free. The first waitress (one of the senior ones) said I could eat almost anything if they left the sauce off - give her a couple of options and we could find something. I took her at her word, although my wife subsequently told me that it was obvious she did not know what she was talking about. She never reappeared. Instead I got a more junior waiter, who announced I could not have roast pork, venison, partridge or most of the limited items on the menu. He suggested either pheasant or fish pie as being the only things I could eat. He clearly had no clue, as fish pie is obviously not ok. To cut a long story short, the food here is overpriced, badly prepared and the staff are untrained and deceitful. Avoid like the plague - by far the worst restaurant I have been to in London. read more

When it's cold outside and you're longing for something a bit traditional, this is the place to go. The food is rich and warm and filling. There are a lot of options for pies, slow-cooked cuts of meat, etc. It's in a bit of a funny place, on a tiny side street near Kensington High Street. We sat upstairs surrounded by all sort of knick-knacks and baskets hanging from the ceiling. Thinking about it makes me want to go back! I'm not sure how this place has so many stars. Maybe they changed wait staff and chef. Where to begin... The atmosphere was cute they put candlesticks in champagne bottles. However, that was about the only thing we liked about this place. To start we ordered steak, quiche, and soup. We told them to bring things out as they were ready. 45 minutes went by and we hadn't seen any food. At an hour we said something and a nice man who was not our waitress looked very confused and went and checked on our food. Apparently the waitress (very rude and unprofessional) told them to bring our food out all together. Why I don't know because we said several times we were hungry and to bring things out as ready. After an hour and twenty minutes our food came out and the waitress said "sorry there were a lot of big parties downstairs." Just to be clear there were none when we arrived and only one table of six when we left. Also not a very professional way to handle the situation. The food itself was quite bland. Really nothing good to say about it. After that long we were expecting great food, and it wasn't good. As we were paying, the table next to us (that had the same waitress) complained because apparently she got one person's order completely wrong. She once again was missing, not to deal with the problems she caused. The same poor waiter had to fix her mess. As we left we saw her do nothing in the corner while the other waiter got yelled at because of her mistakes! I couldn't believe it. She didn't care at all and didn't apologize to their table. What really set me off (I don't think I've ever given a one star review and rarely a two star..) is that I got severe food poisoning from this place. WOW! Maggie Jone's extremely delicious! My friend took me there after we just left from a exhibition and it was the perfect place for the end of our day. The decoration is cool and it makes you feel like you are in some family cozy house, from what I understand they have a new menu everyday. The whole crew is very kind and funny and they seem to know every plate as they are the one that would cook it. I had the veggie pie which was the best one I ever had and I'm not lying, my friend got the duck with some potatoes and veggies with was melting in the mouth. A bit of a gem, down in an alley way. Set In a small, yet charming 3 level house. You get to eat surrounded by antiques. The place is mostly candle lit. Very romantic but boisterous in equal amounts which is a great mix. The food served here is what I imagine rich Victorians to feed on. I travel a lot and I've never seen PARTRIDGE on the menu. Expected a lot of venison, boar along with traditional home made meat pies. They have a few veggie options too. Service is slow like molasses but I can only imagine how small the kitchen is in this old building, so I am willing to let it slide. Make sure to make an evening of it. I am an American living in London for 10 months so far. This is the best British food I've had since I've moved here. The services was slow and not terribly helpful, however, If the food wasn't so good, the service I received would really put me off. I was with a friend and a business guest. When I tried to order our starters to buy us some time to think about main courses, I was told by our server that starters must be ordered at the same time as the entrees. We didn't buy that and think that the waiter just didn't want to have to take our orders separately for starters and main courses. The appetisers were small and rustic and at first underwelmed, but one taste of the hollandaise and we were in! For dinner, the roast rump of lamb with mint was the star, but my roast beef rump with onions and horseradish was also very good. The sea bream was good but full of bones, and I have no patience for that :) Desserts were amazing. The chocolate pot, bread and butter pudding and sherry trifle were all stars. Hmm. I've been here twice now and I feel a bit confused on the best way to review this place. First, above all else, this place is pure atmosphere. I think it's one of the dishiest rustic environments, while remaining just classy enough to make it a perfect date spot, or an intimate night out with close friends. Of course, food matters just as much in these locations, and that's where the confusion sets in. I've had great food here, and now I've had boring food here. Partridge night: This was my first time having partridge, and although difficult to eat, it was quite enjoyable here. I opted for the red cabbage and bacon/peas as a side. The accompanying gravy and hollandaise were lovely, and obviously made with care. Everything was moderately spiced, but quite enjoyable overall. The onion tart was extremely pricey for the size (9 pounds!!!) but was simple perfection. Overall, it was simple food done really well and I left quite pleased with Maggie Jones's. Bream night: Dining again, I tried the sea bream while my friend had the fillet. It was at this point my alarm was raised. Both the sea bream (18.50 I think) and the fillet (26.50) were acceptable..but very lackluster for the price. The fillet was especially forgettable and small; this is outrageous for the pricetag. I believe it was the most expensive item on the menu and it was easily the most disappointing. My sea bream was solid, but left too untouched to be standout. It was a nice cut of fish..that's it! The next problem was that both of these dishes did not come with any sides...so at this point we've spent over 40 pounds for a small fish, a mediocre steak...and nothing else. Very hard to internalize. Fortunately I ordered the cauliflower cheese, which was nice but yet again lacking finesse in the long run. We then tried dessert. I had the bread pudding, which was a bit boring but definitely edible..I feel that was the point so I wasn't too concerned. My dining mate said the creme brulee was fantastic, though topped with a bit too much sugar for his liking. It's interesting to note that my first trip here was when they were busy, and the second trip while they just opened. Odd. I think that you should go here for more traditional food: pies and tarts, rumps and roasts. The atmosphere suggests that it's a classic British restaurant, so go with that feeling. For all the timeless recipes, they have odd items like crab and avocado which simply do not fit in. I wish this place cut about 10 items off of it and focused on what they are good at. I must reiterate that MJ's is one of the most romantic places I have been. Service is nice and you will feel at home instantly. read more

I emailed the contact and they were extremely accommodating and helpful in getting us a seat. Even when I changed the time at the last minute (via email no less), they were extremely friendly about it and when we arrived, they had noted the change and had us seated immediately. What makes this place special beyond the excellent food was the DECOR and AMBIANCE: about the most charming restaurant that I have ever eaten in. My wife and i had a nice romantic booth with candles and the privacy we needed to have a fantastic dinner with conversation we don't normally get to enjoy with our 2 year old at the table :) The food was great as well, not the best we had while in London, but definitely high quality and delicious. Serendipity, thy name is Maggie Jones. Wandering through Kensington High Street with nary an M&S open for a lazy bite, my fellow weary traveling buddies and I were running out of options. Not only was it a crappy, damp Sunday night - but it was closing time. It seemed in the stars that we had happened upon this place. The ambiance, the service, the food - was perfect. We were seated under the stipulation that we would have a limited menu due to the restaurant closing soon, but they were nonetheless willing to accommodate (and let me tell you, it can't be an easy feat to convince a chef to cook an allergy-free meal when he's ready to go home). The salad tasted like it was harvested that morning. The broiled fish was simple yet satisfying. The crème brûlée was the best I've had since France. The waitstaff was incredibly attentive and friendly. On top of that, I could not stop taking pictures of the damn place because it was so beautiful inside - like a sexy country cottage. Definitely not a place for a bunch of greasy travelers like us.. this is a place to take your sweetheart! read more

I'd forgotten how dimly-lit Maggie Jones's is, but my eyes soon adjusted. Some places, this would ring alarm bells, what does the chef have to hide? But at Maggie Jones's it just adds to the rustic, intimate atmosphere. Service was welcoming, helpful and friendly without being obtrusive and the food was good, classic British fare. My steak was very enjoyable, if not quite as memorable as on a previous visit, and my bread and butter pudding was as good as such gets. I'd suggested MJ's for a meet-up with my cousins and their husbands, and everyone seemed pleased with it. My only criticisms would be that the food was a tad slow to arrive after ordering, and whilst good, it's fairly pricy (especially as veg is not included with the mains and has to be ordered as sides). But this /is/ Kensington, and I shudder to think what the overheads must be like. read more

If you love The Crown on Netflix, you'll love Maggie Jones. It was a favorite of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden, she used Maggie Jones as her alias when making a reservation. I had the Stuffed Chicken Tarragon, the best comfort food in London. The ambience is very cozy and you never know who you might be dining with. Sadly, I was quite disappointed again, for such a lovely and cosy place. This being my third time, only because my friend who organised the annual get together chose this place, and I was willing to give it another try. I have yet to understand the rave reviews regarding the food though, but it may be it is because we always go for the Sunday Set Menu and not a la carte, which is difficult to get on a Sunday it seems, more of that later. So the first time, had a great impression of the place because of the impressive decor. We were seated upstairs, and I loved the cosiness, but the food was so, so, no refinement in cooking or presentation, standard fare really. The second time, our party was seated downstairs, and as I could not stay for long and would not have time for the full Sunday set lunch, asked to order just a main course from their a la carte menu. What a palaver, it seems this is not available on Sundays. Finally, after much to-ing and fro-ing, and exasperation on the part of the harassed waiters, I was able to just order a fish dish that they will prepare for me, but the fish they offered was not available, so had the alternative, which tasted very bland. So third time lucky? Well let see, our group was seated downstairs, and we had all pre-ordered except two people, who were then given the Sunday Set Menu on a blackboard. I had the roast pork, which was very dry, and then realised that there should have been gravy to accompany it, and when I looked for the gravy boat, it was at the other end of the table, and was empty. I managed to attract a waitress' attention as she passed me to serve another table, and I had not expected her to neglect the other table to serve me, but her attitude was a bit rude, when I tried to get her attention. Finally, after waiting for her to come back, and she did not, I asked another waiter who happened to pass by with his hands full, and I mentioned if he could help me, and he looked at his full hands and I immediately, expressed, obviously, when he was ready. In no way was I expecting him to drop everything! I was surprised that they only supplied one gravy boat for seven Sunday roasts, on a large table. To make matters worst, whilst I tried to explain to the busy, stressed out waiter, the other waitress took the gravy boat and filled it up and left it at the other end of the table to me, so it was out of reach, and the people at the other end, thought "great more gravy", obviously not enough before, and proceeded to hand it around at their end, amidst protests from me! I was slightly miffed that the waitress did not return the gravy boat to me since I specifically asked for it, it would have been much better customer service to do so. My companion had lamb, and he said that was very chewy. The roast beef and sea bream were probably the better bet, although one person was not happy that the beef was well done, when they requested otherwise. Again the service was lacking. The person who had the sea bream, after finishing his meal, spied a dish of baby potatoes at the far end of the table, untouched, and thought that was probably for his dish, and he would have liked some, if he saw it. Again, why put it at the other end of the table to the person who should have it. At any other restaurant, the waiter would announce the arrival of the sides, or put it with or near the person who had ordered that meal. I know they are busy but the waiter/waitress looked stressed and harassed, and not at all welcoming, and if that is their mood, then that rubs off on the overall restaurant atmosphere, creating an unrelaxed place. I had expected a better level of service and better quality food in South West London. Luckily, the company we had was great, and I hope the organiser will choose somewhere else next time for our get together. read more

The concierge at the Kensington area hotel we were staying at for the weekend put Maggie Jones on a list of recommended spots- we were so glad that we choose this for our Saturday evening dining spot! We arrived after 8pm, and without a reservation. They were able to get us in at a unshared table- the last one available for that evening. I would recommend reservations for anyone wanting to dine here. The decor is a bit cluttered and chaotic, but the candle-lit ambiance manages to be warm, homey and utterly romantic. The service was attentive without being overbearing; the food simple, well prepared and delicious. Also- they had quite a few vegetarian selections worked into the menu, not just to appease the occasional non-meat eater, but to entice both carnivores and herbivores alike. read more

One of the best restaurants I've tried in London. Loved the rustic, cozy decor. My friend and I both enjoyed our lamb and wine very much. When our waiter realized that he had initially failed to bring us our drinks, he offered us a dessert complimentary on the house. I think perhaps the most memorable bit aside from the atmosphere is the house wine. Order a 1.5l bottle of house and they will charge you for how much you drink, rather than the full bottle.
