And we came upon Two Rivers/Weird Sisters, a combined small, independent book store-slash-yarn and knit shop. We loved this store. The ladies who work here clearly not only know their stuff but they are passionate about their books and knitting. I overheard them talking books with customers, and it was so clear that they love reading and know what to recommend. It was also obvious that this book and knit store has a loyal customer base, as it seemed that all the folks who were there when we visited were regulars. The ladies who work here knew the customers - and their kids - by name. (This felt like the "Cheers" of book and knit shops lol!). They host book club meeting here and also "bitch and stitch" knitting groups. Heck, the name alone of the clubs makes me want to learn to knit! At the time of our visit, they were doing some sort of book promo where you get a bag of chips with certain book purchases. (This may be a YA promo, I'm not sure). But they had a lot of "Potato Chip Books" on display, and it was super cute and super clever. (There were some teen girls there with their moms at the time, and they were all really into this "potato chip" book thing). There's a section devoted to Portland gifts and local, gourmet fare. I got a locally made Bloody Mary mix that looks amazing, and the lady who works here told me the backstory, how she knows the family who makes this mix, and it was so interesting, hearing about the personal connection they have here to the various products they carry. In the meantime, they're keeping me up to date with the series and each time I go to pick up my book, I find at least one other fascinating read to take home--and they give me credit when I bring books back. This is a wonderful gem in the heart of St Johns. The yarn shop side has a lovely selection of mid- to luxury yarns. I was excited to see Brown Sheep yarns here because they are a sweet reminder of my humble beginnings when learning to knit 20+ years ago. It was my go-to yarn for felting projects. Not many shops carry Brown Sheep. Did I need more yarn? You never ask a fiber artist that question. The factual answer is likely no, but the spiritual answer is always yes. I ended up with a gorgeous skein of Blue Sky Woolstock in Earth Ivy. The bookshop side has a lovely selection of books, cards, games, gifts, stickers, and bookish ephemera. When I visited last week, a fantastic Summerween display sat at the front of the shop. I couldn't help myself and had to buy "A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls." I was also happy to find a paperback edition of My Friends by Fredrik Backman, which has been on my list for ages. The same rules apply to the question of factual vs. spiritual need for books in the heart of a hopeless bibliophile. I'm excited to tuck into "A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls" because the lovely bookseller, Christine, mentioned that bar owners in St John's are IN this book! How awesome is that?!? It was such a delight to chat with Christine. I'm so grateful to booksellers like them for daring to dream and investing in spaces that nurture learning and imagination. What greeted me was a snarky welcome and an automatic coffee machine with burned, unflavored and unbalanced coffee. If you're a person who truly appreciates good tasting coffee, this IS NOT your solution. I'd recommend 10 minute drive to Morse coffee instead. For the same price you'll be delivered a crafted coffee rather than a machined coffee that can only serve coffee one way.
