If you ever find yourself wandering into Maggie McGarry's, just know you're not walking into a bar--you're being emotionally adopted. From the moment we stepped in, the Irish-accented bartender welcomed us like family. Not the good kind--more like the redheaded stepchildren who show up unannounced but are getting fed anyway. She didn't just serve drinks--she gathered us. There's a real sense that if things got cold outside, she'd tuck the whole bar into her metaphorical bosom, hand out shots of Fernet and tell us we're doing just fine in life (even if we clearly are not). And then there's the other bartender, who looks a lot like Gavin Newsom. So slick, composed and somehow making even a simple pour feel like a well-managed state operation. If he started giving policy updates between rounds, I wouldn't have even questioned it. Drinks were strong, vibes were stronger and by the end of the night we felt sure we'd been there our whole lives. Five stars for the Guinness, six stars for the bartenders and seven stars for the full emotional dependency formed somewhere between rounds two and three. read more

Poor service. My friends and I stopped by Maggie McGarry's the night before the Superbowl and was highly dissatisfied this time around. I had visited once last year for St. Patrick's day and had a lovely time. This time, I left before I even ordered a drink. This bar offers live music which drew an insanely large crowd. They definitely let far too many people into the building. We were tightly packed in there like a bunch of sardines. We finally pushed our way to the bar (which we thought was a tad emptier) in the back. Unfortunately we were wrong. We waited at the bar for about 10 minutes waiting for the bartender to get to us. We believed the bartender was extremely drunk. He was slurring his words and dropping things on the underbar. He completely ignored us (or was too drunk to even realize we were there). Eventually we got fed up and just left. As we were on our way out, the bartender literally waved goodbye to us! Although I would give them bonus points for having The Rookie playing on the TVs, this was all around a bizarre experience and I am not as inclined to revisit. read more

This is my favorite bar in the entire city. As an arsenal fan I give them business every weekend and bring all my friends here. The bouncer was being so rude for no reason this week. We were waiting in line and I guess he was assuming we were talking bad about him (we were not) and he wouldn't let us in. I have never been more confused in my life. Visited on the night of 4/24/26 and had a concerning experience with security. My girlfriend was denied entry without any clear explanation, and the situation escalated when a member of the security staff physically grabbed her despite her not being disruptive or aggressive. There was no attempt to communicate or de-escalate, just immediate physical intervention. Regardless of the reason for denying entry, there is no justification for unnecessary physical contact, especially in the absence of any threatening behavior. Situations like this reflect poorly on staff training and raise legitimate concerns about patron safety. I would strongly encourage management to review their security protocols and ensure staff are trained to handle situations professionally and without unnecessary force. read more

I am so sad and upset to write this review. I have come here for a couple years now. I loved coming here as a soccer fan. This pub shows most of premier and champions league games as well as other leagues, so it was perfect for a soccer fan like myself. I have always recommend this bar to my friends and family. I just had the craziest and hurtful experience with a bartender here. Never had this experience with her before. She spoked me to extremely rudely and disrespectfully as well as in front of the whole bar and denied me service because I chose to speak up about how she spoke to me. I was outside on the park-let on a phone call and eating my lunch. I had chose to wait outside and finish my phone call, because I know there's a policy of speaking on the phone inside and also common bar etiquette. Once I was done with the phone call I was going to order a drink. In the middle of my phone call, she demanded my ID over and over again and that I need to order a drink to stay outside. I told her I had understood and I was going to come inside, I was just waiting to finish the phone call. As she was leaving to go back inside she rudely told me I had food all over myself face which I thought was very unnecessary and a bit malicious. To the point that the person on my phone call asked me if everything was okay and what was going on. I ended my phone call and came inside. I handed my ID to her. She made a comment about how she just needed to check my ID. Because of the way she spoke to me I felt that I needed to say something so I had told her I understood but didn't appreciate that way she executed it. She then went to argue with me infront of the whole bar. Her point was that she needed to check my ID which I totally understood but wasn't my point. She wouldn't let me speak and wasn't trying to understand me and instead just said that she didn't want my business and I should take it elsewhere I just want to preface this post that I 100% understood her job and what she needed to do. I wasn't upset that I need to show my ID or order my drink. My point was that the way she spoke to me individually, as well as in-front of the bar was not necessary at all and extremely rude. I wish she would have just heard me out. And what was worse was she went to the other customers at the end of the bar to talk about me loudly as I walked out and proceeded to call me a name. All in all. I wish this could have ended better since I love this bar so much. I am very taken a back. Thank you Maggie's. read more

An Irish pub just in time for St. Patricks day. Lots of indoor outdoor seating, in a safe and fun neighborhood with live music. St Patricks Day. Thats a big drinking day. You'll want to go to a place where drinks aren't that expensive - just in case things get out of hand. It falls on a Sunday so you might want to get started early in case you have work the next morning. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. The parklet outside is spacious and is great if you want some fresh air. Its the smoking zone - although I'm not sure if its officially supposed to be. Don't tell anybody. North Beach is a safe and fun neighborhood. Party lights line the street and it puts people in a very good mood. Police station is just across the street and thats why I'm thinking there really isn't any trouble around here - car break ins included. Live music is great. Adds a little to the ambiance - afterward get some Golden Boy. That hits the spot for the nights you've had too much. read more

Always loved Maggie's! We come Wednesday's/ Thursdays and have the best time. Friday/ sat is never worth it in north beach because of the covers and obnoxious people coming to party. But, Maggie's on Thursday/ Wednesday is the best. Karaoke is so fun, live music thursdays are so fun, and the bartenders are always so nice-- much better than the bartenders at Tupelo and other bars on the street. read more

We were expecting food, but they do not offer food; however, there are several nearby restaurants and they allow you to bring your food in with you. I would like to preface this review by acknowledging that most people who claim that bouncers are rude, are just drunk and disorderly, and I would like it to be known that I had not yet had a sip of alcohol that evening. What could have been a wonderful night was swiftly ruined by a horrible, rude, and bullying bouncer. This man checked my ID and ushered me inside. After stepping inside for a moment to check in with my friends I stepped outside to see if I could grab a table. I went back inside to let them know the situation and the bouncer who had, mind you, JUST checked my ID, imposingly blocked me and pushed me back with his body. He then proceeded to loudly and aggressively berate me and block me while pushing me back. He ignored my calm explanation that he had just checked my ID, all the while interrupting me like a child, repeating "no I didn't no I didn't no I didn't, I would remember, get the fuck out of here." When I finally got a word in edgewise to remind him of what had happened moments before he said "oh that was you my bad." Not even an apology. He then tried to fight all of my friends for asking him why I was near tears on the sidewalk of North Beach. We Will Never Return. A power trip is a great way to lose business. A touch of Ireland in North Beach! Founded by Mick Graham, and Mairéad McGarry in 2006 in North Beach, the pub looks and feels as Irish as they come and can hold its own against any Irish Pub in America! The Pub is very spacey and has a long beautiful bar, but it also has a section with chairs and tables where there is a stage for live performances. During the pandemic they also setup outside tables that seem to be very popular with the younger clients, especially during the morning hours of every weekend when the English Premier League (and other European soccer league) matches are broadcasted. Usually when I go to Maggie McGarry's, I opt for Guinness, but this time around we saw someone drinking a glass of Magners Irish Cider and got curious. The nice bartender was very kind to explain what it tasted like and that it would be best to pour in a glass full of ice. Correct she was! I now have two options when I go there! Disappointing experience from start to finish. My friends and I stopped by after dinner since we were in the area, but it quickly became clear that we were not welcome. As someone born and raised in SF, I've always cherished the city's inclusive and diverse spirit. Sadly, that sense of openness feels like it's fading. Came here on a Friday to celebrate St. Patricks day. The bar was empty when we walked in but was super crowded by the time we left. We did not know that this place had live music which started pretty late - 10:00 PM. Drinks : Its your regular Irish pub with a full range of beer and some other cocktails. No food here but there are loads of places you can get food from around this bar. We got pizzas and fries as we sat here catching up with our friends. They pour a lot of alcohol into your cocktails and so you can really hold your drink for long here. Ambience : This is a good place to watch sports over a drink and catch up with big groups since they have ample seating and two bars. The second bar opens post 10:00 PM when the crowd really large. I don't think this place is as clean or Covid safe - Bring your own sanitizer wipes if you can. Once the band started to play, the bar got over crowded. Everyone here was having fun dancing, drinking and enjoying the band. The lead singer of the band decided to interact with the audience throughout the show which made it even more fun. Staff : Nice and sweet Bartenders. To the point and very quick! Value for money : Fridays are the best days here. Definitely choose to catch the live band to get the best experience. read more

I make it a point to not go to North Beach in general, but came to see a friend's dad perform here with his band. Band was great, but other than that, I won't come back. This was during the latter half of COVID so I was still a bit nervous going out, but was fully vaccinated and had my mask on. I was really disappointed that they were not only not checking vaccinations (which most businesses in SF were still strict on) but no one inside had masks on. It was extremely packed, which made me wonder why there was a bouncer at all if he was just letting everyone and their mothers in and the crowd was, as expected, a bunch of frat bros and sorority sales girls who act like they haven't graduated yet. read more

I am 25 year local and stopped in after work a little before 4pm on a Tuesday. I ordered a beer and set my backpack down on one of the 8 empty seats at the bar. I was told by the Irish accented woman tender that I had to remove my bag from the chair. the place wasn't busy and it seemed really odd. And all before I sat down next to it or paid. I then asked, "is there a problem?" with four empty seats to the side of it. I was then asked in a very jerky way "is your bag going to order a drink?" Went barhopping with a group and this was one of our favorite spots. Great bands played on both nights we visited and the bar is roomy with beautiful murals. Minimum charge of $20 to use a card, but the bartender waved it for me the first night. This is a spot to either have cash or have an open tab for multiple drinks, not just a one and done. Been coming here for 3+ years. The owners are wonderful people, the bartenders are a delight, and this establishment is a pillar of the North Beach/Soccer community. One of the best Arsenal bars in the Bay, and home of the Bay Area Gooner club. For those complaining about the "reefer smell", it's three doors down from a weed dispensary in the heart of San Francisco. The entire city smells of reefer. You can't fault an establishment for smelling like weed. It's a part of the city's fabric. read more

Maggie McGarry's has to be one of the best neighborhood bars in North Beach. While it has a mix of neighborhood locals and people from elsewhere in San Francisco, I also met a group of Germans and a Scotsman on a recent visit. There is often live music on Friday and Saturday nights and karaoke on Tuesdays. You can watch and celebrate (or suffer) with fans of the Niners, Warriors, and Giants, and Man City and Arsenal fans know they can watch every match live (the proprietor opens the bar at the right time).
