Fly fishing the Pigeon River North Carolina with Rob. Catching rising brook, rainbow and browns on dry flies. Could have landed several more if we had not run out of 6x tippet and caddis flies! Check out that wonky rig with the ant tied to it-and it caught fish! Dry flies are fun! Rob got me out in the river at dawn before the crowd. He's a lifelong fly guy and it shows. We made friends early, and he gave me some good tips. I caught all three-rainbow, brook and brown- two brookies bigger than ever before. The next day I fished private water for storied monster wild trout in Georgia on the Soque River-Fern Valley with Landon of Maggie Valley Fly Shop. I almost had the biggest trout of my life-30inch wild rainbow. No fish story. Fought it and just as Landon was about to net-gone. Beautiful and awesome day flyfishing. Indescribable. The number, type and size of the trout were incredible. Rainbow, Palominos, Browns. The largest congregation of huge 24 inches plus wild trout in the area-maybe in the world. I'd never seen a Palomino in the wild until today, when a dozen of them all over 24 inches refused my fly! Jaw dropping. What a day! Watched Landon catch two monster rainbows plus several normal sized nice fish. The highlight was when he hooked a 40 incher that broke his line and zoomed off jumping in the air six times seeming to angrily protest being fooled by a hook with chicken feathers. That rainbow was salmon-sized. Both of us stood there slack-jawed at this behavior and enormous wild trout! Homeric! I'm bringing a friend with me next year! read more

Purchased a dream fly rod from Maggie Valley Fly two weeks prior, being a Hardy Ultralight ( Ferrari of Anglers). Became nauseated after breaking it from a fall two days later. I contacted the fly shop owner Shannon that evening. Shannon contacted Hardy Rod company and I believe paid overnight shipping and got me back on the water in 3 days. Being only an hour from the fly shop I chose to visit the fly shop today and petsonally think Shannon for going above and beyond. Maggie Valley Fly Shop is an absolute must visit. The shops inventory is mindblowing. His fly selection consists of thousands of premium flies. The shop is comparable to a museum of the latest and greatest. Just returned with my son from a great trip to Maggie Valley, NC. Hooked up with the guys at Maggie Valley Fly Shop. The shop is a great place to meet up and start the day. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable and passionate with their work. Euro Nymphing on lite tackle in small streams was challenging but worth the effort and these guys know how to do it. In early January 2023 I wanted to fly fish Western NC. So I looked up a few fly shops offering guided trips. I first arrived at the Rivers Edge Outfitters. I walked into the store to first observe what was in stock, minimal is the best description. While I was browsing two individuals were taking down Holiday decorations. I think it was about 5 minutes before my presence was acknowledged. I was not impressed. After that I went to Maggie Valley Fly Shop, As I walked into the shop, Shannon, one of the shop owners was sitting behind the counter, obviously busy. He immediately stopped what he was doing walked around the counter and greeted me with a handshake. Odd, I thought, but as I spoke with him, I became intrigued by his ability to speak fly talk, fishing and really trying to find out about me and my abilities with a fly rod, fish knowledge, etc. So I booked two half days with his guides. Unfortunately, weather was against us. Heavy rain all day the day before I was to fish, water blown out and stained like thick chocolate milk. So after a two day rest, water was still up a tad but fish-able. The first day I fished with Jerry Yates on a float trip on the Tuk. Had a wonderful time, caught enough fish. But I was more impressed by the conversation and his knowledge of the sport and life in general. A very talented guide with great people skills. The second day I did a wading trip with Landon Henley. First we hit the upper C&R section of Ravens Fork, made about ten casts, he said lets move. Drove down lower stepped in the water, made a few casts and he noticed a pair of otters sitting on a rock across the run we were fishing. The otters decided to go for a swim in the run, I suspect as soon as they hit the water fish spooked, so Landon said time to move. It was at this point he suggested a "secret spot" not sure if we were 2 miles away or 40 since i had that black hood over my head, remember secret spot. He could have been driving in circles for 45 minutes. Once we arrived on a small stream and began to fish a run about the size of a pick-up truck and no wider than 15 feet. I am fair to say a decent fly fisher, 69 and started fly fishing in 1971. I used to "high stick" nymphs most of the time. Landon introduced me to Euro Nymphing with a site line. Very interesting and effective. Over the next two hours we caught at least 30+ trout, I don't count fish but I am sure the tally was well over 30. We had one rod between us and would go one for one. I believe the smallest bow was 16" and may hve been two or three approaching the 20" mark. All except one appeared to be a stream born fish. Even caught one cutbow. Over that 2 or 3 hours, we were standing in the water laughing like 12 year olds that had stolen a beer from dad's fridge. What a hoot. Landon impressed me with his ability to speak about all things, he raises cattle, has a landscape business, guides and does fly shows, all while earning a Masters Degree. So much talent emanating from that fly shop, very impressive. Needless to say, I will be back to fish again with such a talented, friendly and knowledgeable group of folks from the Maggie Valley Fly Shop. What a great two days to spend on the water as this planet circles the sun and we get a little older and a little wiser due to folks like Maggie Valley staff. read more

After 20 years of being critical care medic I felt as though I've lost my place in life. I battle depression and PTSD and was recommended by my Dr. to take up a hobby, and take in the beauty of Gods creation. I have chosen to learn euro nymphing as I live at the base of GSMNP. Shannon had posted some kind words of encouragement on a YouTube video to a struggling angler. This resonated with me as I believe in supporting the small business owners vs box stores. I didn't divulge into my situation but told Shannon of a trip I had planned in a week and have NO idea of how to setup a euro rig. Shannon went back into work before hours to rig up my Hardy Ultradisc, supplied the euro line, tied my his formula all the way to to the tippet ring for me. He provided me a schematic of how to tie it in the future, and also provided me tippet material. I went with the Hardy Ultralight LL 10'2" in 2 weight and the Hardy ultradisc reel. Knowing the timeframe from online purchase to doorstep was 40 hours with them eating the $40 UPS shipping fee. These people are true sportsman and blue collar people and will have my business.
