Loved our stay here. Recently underwent renovations and joined the luxury chain Relais and Chateau. We stayed in the Haywood cabin which was perfect for our group of 5. Two king bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, porches, living area with pull out couch, and fireplace. Modern decor and comfy touches throughout like the heated floors in the bathroom. We also had an amazing view of the mountains. We had the pleasure of trying all the menus at Switchback Restaurant - breakfast, brunch, and dinner. Food was local and tasty. Vibe was lodge chic. Took advantage of the hiking trails as well. Did the Salamander Falls and Meadow trails. Great scenery and went right past the pasture with horses, which were so sweet. Most importantly, the staff were all incredible. Everyone was pleasant and accommodating. They made it so easy to communicate requests both before and during our stay. The destination whenever we have company staying with us is to dine at Switchback Restaurant! The staff is always incredibly welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, and delightful. The food is over the top every single time. We went to Cataloochee Ranch to ride horses for the weekend. We paid a tremendous amount of money for this weekend experience for our anniversary. We awoke to ride horses and they told us the horse had a ligament problem they had known about all week. They told us we could not ride horses this weekend. They never contacted us before hand. We drove hours to get there, took off work, and hired sitters, all of this took quite a bit of money. They lied to us by not telling us they had no horse. We packed up and drove all the way back home because we had planned on a horseback riding weekend. A TERRIBLE experience. read more

We used to always visit the original Cataloochee Ranch. The new Cataloochee Ranch, however, makes me question several aspects of the new business' integrity. When I most recently researched the availability, rates, and such, I found there to be a few too many discrepancies in the booking process. This involved changes in rates once dates were selected, increases in total amount, and the rounding up of the total. Additionally, as beautiful as the interior design may be, it steps away from the theme and atmosphere of a ranch--more of a boutique hotel vibe than a ranch. As lovely as the overhaul and revitalization of Cataloochee Ranch may be, I'm not sure I could ever support a business that utilizes such questionable practices with their booking procedures. read more

We ate at Switchback Restaurant last night. From the moment we entered it was pure magic. The staff are all incredible. The food was just as incredible. We had the bread service, which is definitely worth it. Next we split the fresh green salad which was truly fresh. I had the trout with the herb beurre blanc and my husband had the Rohan duck. Both were expertly prepared and seasoned. I've never had better trout. Desert was a whiskey ice cream with dark chocolate cremeaux. I hope this restaurant gets at least a James Beard nomination, if not a win. I'd say they are worthy of a Michelin star. Go early and enjoy an expertly prepared cocktail on the patio. read more

I was really looking forward to dinner given the luxury and exquisiteness of the restaurant; but, pizzas? Sub par pizzas at that (I threw leftovers away, which never happens with pizza). This review is just for the Hemphill Bald trail. I was visiting Asheville without a car and the local paper advertised a donation based hike with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy via carpool. Perfect! An easy 45 minute drive outside of downtown Asheville, this is perfect for a quick or last minute day hike. You can choose longer trails if you have more time too. The mountains were beautiful and I got to pet some friendly horses. The trail is easy to moderate, some places were muddy and rocky but I did fine without a walking stick, and with one it would be a breeze. read more

Well, four of us made reservations for brunch. We arrived on time and they were not ready for us. So, as the hostess suggested we went into the bar, had drinks and waited. Finally, someone came and got us and seated us in an almost completely empty dining room at a table not close to the windows so we didn't see the views... The service was awful. Again, we waited and waited for someone to come to the table to take our orders. Meanwhile the menu was not impressive at all. The pastry chef came to our table before anyone else... We ordered the pastry basket, it was a bit costly, and really not worth it..but it was tasty and we were starving by then. We finally had a young man come to take our order, and a minute later another server came to the table and excused him. ?? No one offered us water or coffee. When the coffee finally arrived there was no cream or sweetners. Frankly, it was a bust and quite expensive, over $125. I'd never go back. read more

CR recently completed an extensive renovation including a new lodge for dining and events with a captivating bar. The space opens up in almost every direction to field stone patios and sweeping views. It is magical! Chef Jeb Aldrich is award winning for obvious reasons ~ every dish has been memorable. We've enjoyed their various events including Oktoberfest, Thanksgiving and Kentucky Derby Day. The spa and wine cellar are close to completion and we hope to attend one of the intimate tasting dinners they have planned. The Chef and owners are committed to sourcing locally even aging their own meats. They are expanding even further by venturing into raising cattle. The infamous Hungarian Mangalitsa pig is treasured here too! It's easily the world's best swine breed and perfect for charcuterie with its unique silky fat profile. This is a world class experience and not to be missed. All of the cabins are completely renovated with some standing brand new. The passion for the ranch is evident in the entire staff. I recently had the pleasure of going to Cataloochee Ranch and dining at their fabulous restaurant. This place's classiness is demonstrated by the real wood fireplace that always burns. The whole experience is top-notch. When you arrive, you are greeted with a smile before you can enter the door, and they already know what reservation you are. The staff is so on top of their game that its almost creepy. When dining, the movie"The Menue" (A favorite film of mine) best depicts how the staff operates. You are highly outnumbered as a guest because it seems the ranch is employing the entire population of Maggie Valley locals. The group of individuals working at the property is a very eclectic group that all have one thing in common: extraordinary hospitality. They are so nice; they make you feel like a bad person by making them serve you. You will leave the property looking to take some of them home with you; they are so accommodating that if you asked, I think they would comply. However my only complaint about the staff would be that my drinks weren't circulating as fast as I would like for a meal with my family. I would appreciate a faster reload time in my old fashion when seated next to my in-laws. The main building that houses the restaurant took more effort to build than the pyramids in Giza. The inside makes you want to switch occupations and become a full time interior designer. I was going to ask for the designer's name, but frankly, I'm too poor. A full-time alcoholic must've crafted the bar; if you aren't up for a long night, then close your eyes when you walk by because it attracts drinkers like a moth to a flame. If you're looking for a cheap meal, then hit the pizza joint on the Maggie Valley strip. You will need to remortgage the house to get a steak on the menu, but you won't regret it. They dry age their steaks on property, so get over the price and splurge. I would highly recommend draining the children's college fund and getting one of their fish dinners so you can experience how fish is supposed to taste. If you don't enjoy the food here, get over yourself and take the stick out of your ass. We had early reservations around 5 pm but found ourselves overstaying our welcome long past sunset. The views and ambiance were so entrancing that we forgot about the Biden vs Trump political debate, but nobody was disappointed because our time couldn't have been better spent. Leaving a mountain view and wood-burning fireplace is problematic, especially when Garret brings out s'mores at your discretion. You need to get to this place quick before the secret gets out. This is a fantastic place to rent a cabin and explore the stunning Appalachian countryside. In the morning head into the main ranch house- you'll sit down to have breakfast with the family who owns the ranch and in the evenings you'll get treated to a fantastic home cooked meal. We had an incredible experience mingling with other guests at the communal table and finished up the night drinking wine and telling stories in front of the fire. Accommodations are quaint, bedding comfortable and showers were hot. This isn't a luxury hotel- but it is a step back in time and a wonderful home grown experience. read more

Made a dinner reservation for Sunday night at 8pm. We wished we had arrived on property sooner to enjoy the views and a pre dinner drink. Would highly recommend getting there early enough to watch the sunset! The staff was incredibly welcoming from offering us a tour, taking our photo and answering all our questions. We started the dinner with bread service. Didn't have time to take a photo before we devoured focaccia and other house made breads with olive oil and house-made butter that melted in your mouth. We shared the leafy greens salad which was just the fresh crunch we needed before our meal. The halibut and ravioli were good. I was hoping for more of a flavor profile in both. Got a chocolate chip cookie for dessert and honestly wasn't the best cookie but satisfied the sweet tooth. Was hoping for a large, gooey, soft, piping hot cookie. The setting is very pretty with views of the mountain vistas one way and views of cabins, barns, and pastures the other way. It's very peaceful. The lodge is an old log cabin. It's very old and nostalgic. It has a wonderful living area with a nice fireplace. 4.5 star setting. The food menu is very limited. 2 star selection. 3.5 star quality. Burgers, hotdogs, 4 kinda of sandwiches, soup, and a couple salad selections. Really a boring menu even for lunch. Service. 3 stars. Not bad. Not good. Just adequate. Price. 4 stars. $10-12 plates. I visited for a reunion with an old friend and a birthday celebration. I wouldn't return unless I just happened to be in the area which is actually pretty remote. If I were staying there it would be a decent option (and the only one). read more

Don't call it a "dude ranch," because it's not out west and no one has ever shown up wearing glam cowboy attire (like fringed shirts with curved arrow head pockets), except for maybe a good pair of boots. And once you learn about the history of these 800-some acres bordering (and sometimes into) the Great Smoky Mountains, you will realize that it's the same family that settled here welcoming you to their mountain-top retreat for a stay. We've visited here more than twice now and each time it's been for several days, enough to drop the city airs and take on the relaxed feelings this bucolic place fosters. There are rooms in the main ranch house, where the family-style meals are served (these we treasure). But you can also take rooms in the dozen outlying cabins, some with fireplaces and TVs, no rooms have landline phones (and cell reception up on the Ranch property is mostly nonexistent. You can make this your home base for touring the national park forests nearby (The Blue Ridge Parkway) or the city of Asheville, several miles to the east. This trip, we skipped most of Asheville and instead explored towns to the south (Waynesville) and further east (Black Mountain). All have local practitioners of homegrown crafts (quilts, pottery, etc.) on display. Cataloochee also maintains a stable of 30 to 40 horses, mostly for infrequent riders to saddle up and follow each other in calm trail lines up to the highest peaks around the property (you might experience a trot sometimes). This is, after all, why guests return after the snow falls for exciting ski runs. The Ranch's wranglers visit the daily morning breakfast to sign guests up for each day's two scheduled rides. Their barn has saddles and safety helmets to accommodate everyone. Their wranglers will fit you to a proper horse. You can also ask about longer, custom trail rides. There is a lot of acreage to explore here. When not on the rides, your horse will join the others free-ranging in the upper meadows that you can see from the ranch house. On occasion, there may be special events like a cookout for dinner, evening musical entertainment, or a talk by the local "wolf man" naturalist, who will let you pet a real wolf. Instead of place cards at the dinner table, you might find a wooden clothes pin with your name hand-written on it. It's that kind of place. The ranch can provide you with a self-guided hiking map or organize a guided hike into the hills just west of the ranch house. After an informative slide show by Judy, a daughter of the founders, we were intrigued to hike up to "the bowl," a natural sunken valley between the upper hills just behind the Silver Bell guest lodge. This is where the original encampment (Cataloochee Valley) had been set up back in the 1930s. There was a recreation of that encampment being set up to mark the Ranch's 80th anniversary with a mountains cook-out there. It was also on this hike that we saw their small apple orchard and the backcross experimental grove of chestnut tree saplings. read more

The Ranch charges resort pricing so I made an assumption that the breakfast and dinner included in the aprx. $250.00 (for a very small room with no t.v.- you can hear everyone in adjoining rooms) would warrant the price. BOY was I wrong. The dinner consisted of a meat that we think was turkey breast ...was very bland and tough with a tasteless rice a roni type rice that I could have made at home better. We then woke up to breakfast that consisted of scrambled eggs that were watery and dried up sausage. Even the coffee was terribe. We liked the idea that they offered shuttle service to the ski lodge which was perfect for Saturday but when we geared up to leave for skiing Sunday morning there was no shuttle service offered at that time which we were not informed about. read more

Great trail riding experience! We're staying in Gatlinburg but made the 90 minute drive to Maggie Valley just to try a trail ride at Cataloochee Ranch. As an avid equestrian and frequent visitor of eastern Tennessee, I've tried trail rides at many different stables in the general area. I had to try Cataloochee after hearing positive remarks from other riders about the beautiful trails, the knowledge of the wranglers, and the excellent care of the horses. It absolutely lived up to my expectations! Due to heavy fog, we didn't get too see many views of the mountains... But that's just a good excuse to come back and ride again sometime soon to see them! The trails are well-maintained and the hills weren't overly steep, which was nice. The horses appear to be very well cared for. They were well-groomed and weren't at all underweight (which is something you may see at some other stables). They were also very well trained and knew what they were doing. Though I have years of riding experience, I went on the ride with someone who has only ridden three times and he had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the horse he rode as well. The staff on the trail ride with us seemed to know a lot about the individual horses and were very patient with the less-than-experienced riders. I appreciated that while helmets aren't required, they encourage riders to wear helmets. Almost all riders in our group were wearing them, which was awesome to see. It rained for the duration of the two-hour ride and they did provide solid ponchos for the riders if desired. We also were able to trot a few times, which was a lot of fun and not something that you find at most other trail riding establishments! Summary - Beautiful place, but food is sparse, staff members do not care about the experience of the guests and uncontrolled kids of staff members terrorizing the resort while others are trying to peacefully enjoy their stay. If you are reading this, then let me indicate that I would not give Cataloochee Ranch 1 star, but more like 3 or 4, but the experience has left such a bad tasted in my mouth, one star it is. Maybe this will get their attention that there is a systemic problem. We attended a function at Cataloochee Ranch last year and did not stay there due to the price. Others that stayed there convinced us that the food was awesome and the other amenities that you received made up the cost difference, so we decided to 'go for it' this year and stay on the property. When I checked in, the lady at the desk asked if there were just the two of us for dinner and I indicated that we had other plans that night and would not be eating dinner there. She seems rather agitated that we were not eating there, called someone over and took us, "off the list". I was glad that they kept such a good count so they would have enough food for everyone. Or at least so I thought at that time. The area is beautiful and cabins quaint. It is relaxing and peaceful. Then came the boy. There is a young boy, about 8 years old, running around the property that is a little hellion. He is destructive to the property and was seen hitting a beautiful tree with a homemade axe near the dining area, running aimlessly around and even jumping on top of the tables while we were eating lunch. He was barefoot, shirtless with dirty feet while jumping on our table while we were eating! Gross! Clearly, this boy needs some discipline and control, as he is a "free range" kid. I believe that he belongs to one of the maintenance men for the property. Speaking of lunch, we did eat lunch on the property and there was not enough food for everyone. When I approached the table, I was told to "please only get one dessert, as we run out all the time". That was odd, but okay, we got our dessert first. When I got to the grill, the pickles were gone, no potato chips and things picked over in general. There were no burgers ready and they were coming about 5 at a time from the kitchen to be grilled as I waited for a burger. When I got mine it was raw in the middle, but I ate it anyway, as I did not want to deal with the hassle. I saw others taking theirs back to be cooked more. Since this was my first dinner night, I was excited and did not want to get there too late and headed up to the line. Shrimp and grits were on the menu and when I arrived at the dish, there were about 10, really... 10 shrimp in the pan. I did not want to take too much, as my wife was behind me and got 3 shrimp. Because there were people on both sides of us, she got the last 2 in the pan and we seated ourselves outside. I watch as people stood there waiting and another pan arrived. The food was good and I waited as the line backed up again and seemed to be a little excitement going on. Turns out, there were no more pans of shrimp and grits and many people did not get any shrimp. We were informed that there would not be any more served and I felt lucky to get my 3 shrimp. By my calculations, I had a $4.99 dinner at a $50 price tag. The breakfasts were sparse at best and I felt as though we had to beg for food. On more than one occasion, the plates did not make it around the table with guests exhausting the food supply before it made it all the way around the table. The staff would eventually get back to us when we flagged them down and asked, but my goodness, this should not be the norm! Last year we observed a concert, a hay ride, and what seemed like a lot of other activities. This year, I SAW the hay wagon. Listened to some bluegrass music that wrapped up before they rolled up the sidewalks at 9:00 pm and that was all. Nothing else. Overall the cabins were nice, yes there was dirt on the floor, but it is a cabin after all, what do you expect? We had a great time, but really felt cheated over the food that we paid a premium for. No worries, they have a chance to make it up at checkout time, right? Uhhh. Wrong. When I checked out, the lady confirmed that others had complained about the food and they had a new cook and the cook did not know how to portion yet. Hmmm. The lady could not compensate us and only said that she was sorry. She then asked us if we would like to book for next year! Oh my. Clueless? I think not. There are some really nice hotels down on the creek that you can get much cheaper and pay for your food at Frankie's! So sorry Cataloochee Ranch. You had an opportunity to make it right for us and failed. I will not be staying here again as a result. So sad. read more

Went for a destination wedding and what a great place for that. I would give it a 3 for hospitality or maybe even a 2 if my wife were writing this but the location and facilities were a 5. What a gorgeous piece of real estate nestled high in the mountains. The trout pond is a no brainer. The trout are impossible to not catch almost. They eat bread. The lake is superstocked with nice trout. For around $14 they cook up your catch. I recommend you bring your own cane pole but they will sell you one for around $8 there but they break easy because they were meant for smaller fish. You could even use a hand line and skip the pole so easy to bring with you. They are super nice about giving you bread for bait and will cook your fish for any meal. We had a room in the main building. Very convenient. Price includes much of your meals as well. The folks there are not as hospitable as I would expect for a tourist destination but I heard that is normal for this place. Kitchen and wait staff were very nice. Reception, not near as much. But heck, I can't give a 3 because the overall impression of the place is fantastic and wish I had been before and probably will be back. So go, catch a fish, walk the hills, and enjoy an absolutely beautiful setting. read more

This is the third time I've dined at Cataloochee Ranch, mainly because I come to the Waynesville/Maggie Valley area every year with a group of golfing buddies. The setting of the Cataloochee Ranch is delightful, if the weather permits, there are outdoor picnic tables for dining. The staff is pleasant and "Tommy the steak cook" is an entertaining buffoon that's always near a glass of wine. Dinner is served "family style" and depending on who sits at your table it can be entertaining, a non-event or a real drag. If you're here for the food, you're here for the wrong reason. My friends punish me each year with steak night at the Ranch and they said this year the steak was a very forgettable experience. Small, tough, chewy ribeyes were over cooked (Thanks Tommy) and not really good at all. I had asked for a "vege burger" ahead of time and it was edible. Rest of the vegetables, bread, drinks, deserts and etc. were all commercial grade acceptable. Local woman played guitar and sang near the gas fueled fireplace. And c'mon a gas fireplace at a ranch? She sings the same six songs every year. It was cute the first time, barely tolerable year two, and this year I was out of there after the opening chords of Colorado Rocky Mountain High. Can't comment on the cottages as we stayed in Waynesville. I think "City Folk" that are looking for a folksy, quasi dude ranch setting will rave about this place, me...not so much. All this and two beers for $43. Next year I'm calling in sick on steak night at the Cataloochee Ranch. read more

First of all, this place offers much more than just dinner. The grounds are idyllic, with panoramic vistas of the mountains everywhere you look. We were delighted by the pastoral fields and the trumpeting of bull frogs in the trout pond as the sun sunk below the horizon. Dinner was amazing--good food cooked simply. For us, it was steak and chicken accompanied by fresh mountain corn, roasted sweet potatoes, baked potatoes and rolls with numerous (and delicious) homemade jellies (like peach rhubarb). Dessert was wonderful--fresh peaches, creamy banana pudding and various cakes. The wine was excellent, too. Then, we enjoyed a campfire storytelling guitarist who spun wonderful tales through fun participation-style ditties and classic tunes.There's even a tree swing for anyone who enjoys a moment of solitude away from the crowd. We went here after being recommended. We arrived and sat down and was greeted fairly quickly. The waitress took our drink order and brought bread. It was buffet dining; baked ham, green beans, roasted potatoes, and some sort of soup. We never saw our waitress again and waited with empty glasses to no avail. There was no variety as mentioned on their website and the only entertainment was some lady swapping cd's while nursing several glasses of wine with a 4-5 year old girl in tow. This place is highly overrated and certainly not worth $25.99 a person (and that does not include alcohol). My family went to the ranch to eat dinner. We were served ham, green beans, potatoes, rolls, and assortment of desserts. The service was poor. The staff was not welcoming or friendly. One staff member stood by the fireplace drinking wine while we sat at the table needing refills. We were charged $25.95 per person. I would not recommend eating here. We went today for Thanksgiving and I have to say, the food was awful. The view was nice but the food was terrible. Don't come here for food.
