    Birthday Treats
    Alexandra S.

It's not every day you get to have a 14th birthday party for your much loved Siberian Husky. Let me do the math for you: Scout turned 98 in human years and thankfully he's doing alright although much slowed down. And yes, we are those kind of people who have birthday parties for their animals, pointy hats and all. Feel free to mock us if you must; we can take it. I'm a regular at Maggie's but came this time specifically to peruse the baked goods section for some birthday party treats and to buy some dog toys . There is always a great freshly baked selection of dog treats that look and smell good enough to eat myself. I love that there are always seasonal designs on some of the iced treats; for this month some fun Halloween designs. Kim, the owner, was there and we had a nice chat about Scout as well as her 5 year old dog and 7 month old puppy. (One of the reasons I love local, non-chain shopping is this kind of personal relationship you develop with the owners.) As for the party, we had human and canine friends over for a barbecue (dogs salivating at the grill while they waited for their share) followed by the luscious looking treats and vanilla ice cream for the birthday boy and his pals. Fun was had by all and the dog treats and the dog toys were a hit...(big surprise, not). Maggie's Doghouse continues to wow with healthy dog treat options, great dog food choices, toys and whatever other supplies and paraphernalia you and your animals might desire. While this birthday, being Scout's 14th, felt bittersweet and I periodically got a little choked up, the treats and toys from Maggie's and all the friends helped make it extra special.

If you're tired of the Costco-style experience of going to Petco, you should give Maggie's Doghouse a try. Located in Downtown Hingham, the whole vibe of this place is refreshing. There are some people who work at pet supply places as a job, and then there is Kathy who clearly runs the place out of love. I hear the owner Kim is just as passionate. I've been there twice when Kathy was tending shop, and I've seen several owners bring their dogs in, and they all love Kathy. Btw, Maggie is the name of Kim's dog. Need a really cute or snazzy dog collar or leash? They've got a great selection. Need some primo chow for your obedient family member (obviously not talking about the hubby or the kids)? So, I went shopping for something special for this little pug that's addicted to eggs (hard-boiled), sausage, and Dingo sticks, and Kathy suggested this chow made by a company called Earthbound. Well, since dogs are derived from wolves, I figured that the Bison meal would be a good bet. A note about this pug, she's got a refined palate. Translation: she's not going to eat just any slop that I put in front of her. Also, this pug's got some street swag. That's why my nickname for her is Notorious P.U.G. For the first couple of days, she would sniff around but she never actually tried it. Then once she did take a bite, she became addicted to it. How addicted? I'd run these little experiments where I took her long-time favorite kibble bits and put them on half of a plate, and then I'd put the Earthbound Bison Meal on the other half of the plate. Every time she'd gobble down the Earthbound Bison Meal and leave the other kibbles untouched. I'm sure that while she's eating that Earthbound stuff, her genes are kicking in and sending her all sorts of subliminal reminders of her ancestors' time roaming the Great Plains and eating bison. Yo, wait, were pugs even in America when bison used to roam the Great Plains in huge numbers? The point is that Maggie's Doghouse carries high-quality stuff that's hard to find at your large local pet supply company or your warehouse-style shopping center. The other thing is that they have this wonderful high-end bakery display where they have all sorts of treats. I'm not much into taking pictures as those who have read my previous reviews know. But the stuff here is just too cute to accurately describe. So, I'll have to include pics with this review. But by far and away, the really appealing aspect of this establishment is that Kathy really love dogs. Some people like dogs, some people love dogs because dogs provide them with companionship, and then there are people like Kathy who just love dogs simply because they are dogs. In other words, Kathy is a dog person who just looks to give love without the expectation of receiving it. Dogs are incredibly perceptive, and that's probably why every dog I've seen walk into that place suddenly gets all excited like a kid on Christmas morning. When I see people like Kathy, I want the place to succeed. And it's even better because the store is so immaculate, meticulously arranged, and inviting. The fact that this is a small business is just another great reason to bring your business here. The final great thing is the location. Whoa, they're next to Bloomy Rind, which I've also written a review about. Hey, if you're going to treat your dog, you might as well treat yourself at Bloomy Rind, and vice versa. P.S. I gave Notorious P.U.G. the pink heart-shaped Woof treat, and she went completely nuts and gobbled it down like it was the last dog treat on earth. Kim bakes all the dog treats herself, so you know that they're made with the highest quality ingredients, and now I know where to go to get gifts whenever I visit a friend with a dog.

My pup can be a bit anxious, and when we moved to the area from Boston, I was nervous about leaving her groomer behind and finding someone new. Luckily we discovered the Bark Club shortly after moving in and haven't looked back since! The store itself is really cute, they have an awesome selection of toys, treats, and other supplies, and always have the best seasonal items. They offer a full slate of grooming services, and some self-serve options that I haven't tried just yet. They even have a bunch of customizations like doggie facials, paw treatments, seasonal shampoo scents, etc. (Honestly never felt like spending the money on that stuff, but if that's your thing, you do you.) My absolute favorite part about this place is that it's cage-free. So instead of having one groomer working on multiple dogs at once and putting them in crates for various portions of the appointment, your groomer is only focused on your pup from start to finish. My Maisie is in and out in half the time, for only slightly more $$, than we were paying in the city. IMO, it's well worth it for my anxious girl. The staff is really great in my experience, the cut itself is high quality, and you can't beat the efficiency. Thanks Bark Club :)

Normally, they have guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots, and other animals for purchase, however, when I stopped in recently (a few days ago), they did not have any pets in store. The worker Jen told me all about this little guy and that this Petco was having a weekend of information and deals that you wouldn't believe. I went in today and I told Tara that I was interested in this little boy. He's not a baby but smaller than any other place had. I had been to 5 places and he was the one. It was a 50% off sale on reptiles! It was a sign to buy him. I got the tank and everything else a couple of weeks ago when I made up my mind this was definitely happening. Jen told me so much about my tortoise and she helped me make up my mind. Tara helped me with picking out a hide and flooring for my new Baby.
