Petco in Quincy is where I typically go to get food, toys, and treats for my pets. I remember I got my first guinea pig from this location many years ago! Normally, they have guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots, and other animals for purchase, however, when I stopped in recently (a few days ago), they did not have any pets in store. Apparently, they had a fire a few months ago and are working on making it safe enough to have pets in store again. It'll be about another year and a half before they have pets again here. Petco in the Hingham Shipyard is absolutely amazing. I just purchased a tortoise, which I wanted for 5 years, from this Petco. The worker Jen told me all about this little guy and that this Petco was having a weekend of information and deals that you wouldn't believe. I went in today and I told Tara that I was interested in this little boy. He's not a baby but smaller than any other place had. I had been to 5 places and he was the one. It was a 50% off sale on reptiles! It was a sign to buy him. I got the tank and everything else a couple of weeks ago when I made up my mind this was definitely happening. Jen told me so much about my tortoise and she helped me make up my mind. Tara helped me with picking out a hide and flooring for my new Baby. His name is Tommy the tortoise and if not for the great knowledge and amazing customer service I received I wouldn't have gotten my dream come true. Thank you so much Girls. read more

Very nice and big store so most likely that you'll find what you want. Customer service needs improvement with friendlier folks at the cashier. Plus, prices can be outdated and discounts are only for those with membership. So ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GOD DAMN RECEIPTS!!! It's hecking frustrating to buy a bunch of stuffs then have to pay a few dollars EACH ITEM with NO DISCOUNT. My bill was almost doubled than expected. And they have no way to refund off-site, so you have to go all the way back for any of their mistakes. Good store, good lesson for me. read more

Booked an appointment just to get my dogs nails trimmed. Apparently, her rabies vaccine expired 6 days ago (October 8th) Her yearly physical is scheduled for November 2nd. Did anyone mention to me when I booked the appointment that they weren't going to be able to take her because of this? That would be a no. I took time off of work to bring an already nervous dog to the groomer, so I am clearly frustrated. I am not trying to be ignorant and put another animal at risk, however this seems extreme to me. Did my dog catch rabies in the 6 days since her vaccine expired? Um, no. She has her appointment scheduled. I can't control when the vet has availability. This is the closest pet store to me. When my Maltese is in need of something this is where I have to shop. It almost seems a bit deserted here. The store is dingy and doesn't look clean. I am pretty sure they are under staffed because you never find employees walking the floor just cashiers. They do have a great selection for dogs and once in awhile I can get some really good deals on the essentials. I mainly come here for food and treats which they have a great selection of... They seem over priced to me compared to other stores but the food is reasonably priced. My Maltese loves coming here and running around however some of the other pet owners that come here don't seem to friendly... I've experienced some serious attitude problems here. If your pet can't handle it keep him home. So if you have a dog and need some essentials come get it here I wouldn't recommend any other services at this Petco location. read more

I went in to grab crickets for my bearded dragon. I have not been to this location before. I usually go to petsmart in Braintree, But this was on my travels. I went in and the place just looked dirty. Which is probably from all the salt and sand from the weather we have been having. But I went right back to were the reptile isle is. All they have available for crickets were medium and large ones. Either boxed or already bagged. (I have a baby) I am used to petsmart or other locations having a bin full of sized crickets that you can purchase X amount. They didn't have this anywhere. I walked the whole store without one employee asking me if I needed help. I then decided to wait in line with only one cashier ringing and other employees just waking by with their iced coffees in hand. Finally it was my turn and the guy told me there should be someone back there to ask. (There wasn't any one back her for the whole 15 minutes I have already been in the store) I go back there and wait a few more minutes for Brittany ( the manager who was very sweet) to come back there and take my order ( which apparently she needed to go in the back and get my crickets) I then once again waited in line with 6 other people and only one cashier as other employees walked by, then finally the manger had to come ring. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a petco I would not recommend this place to anyone or would I return here. read more

I take my dog here all the time. The staff team here are like family, and has been very helpful. I have had a lot of questions asked since I'm the first time dog owner. Today my dog just passed the CGC test. We've come a long way, but we made it and I'm very proud. Special thanks for the dog trainer Karman, for she gives me that extra push to go for the CGC. The training program has gone 10 times better since Karman came. Highly recommend if you are in need of a good and knowledgeable dog trainer. Technically the Petco in Cambridge is closer to my Dorchester abode than this Quincy location; but driving across Boston to get to the Kendall/Lechmere location is just daunting. So to Quincy we go! We've visited this Petco twice, once lucking out with street parking (Starka's pop is a dynamite parallel parker!) and the other time parking on the roof. I'm pleased to report my dog is totally comfortable with the elevator! The check-out zone in this store is just weird. Once you go through the line and make your purchases, you have to double back to exit the store. This isn't a strike against Quincy-Petco... just... weird. The layout of the store is agreeable, and spot on with most other Petcos. Now having been to Petsmart for a dog-purpose, I can say the selection is lacking a few things (martingale collars and harnesses, training treat logs to name a few). And you know what else is lacking... helpful staff. Alright... it's not entirely their fault. I've been in there looking for things they don't carry. And my dog has come face to face (nose to nose) with some dogs she didn't agree with. But honestly... these are dogs and they're attached to responsible owners (that's why there was no blood-shed). I don't need to be shunned because my dog freaking barked in Petco! Going to "Petco" over "Petsmart" is a programmed default (may be because the former is easier to spit out than the latter). Ok, I decided to feed my cat Royal Canine kitten food. One of the only places to buy it is at Petco and this is near my house. I generally park on the roof. The stairwell to get down to the store always smells a bit weird. I try to put that behind me when I go inside. The store is laid out ok. The dog section is huge and the cat section is much smaller. My cat would not be happy with that. It does carry Royal Canine but not the litter I use. I sometimes wander over to the guinea pigs or bunnies if there are any to just look. Once again, that weird smell is sort of in the check out area but I try to put it into the back of my mind. Generally the staff is nice and I am in and out quickly. The grooming staff at this location are so kind. My dog, an Italian Spinoni, is a large shaggy mess every time I bring him in. They've always respected my requests to keep his hair long and shaggy despite this meaning extra work/detangling for them. This review is for the Grooming Department. I brought my wonderful lab there awhile back. The groomer, Christina was completely stuck up and rude. I felt as if I was wasting her time and that she didn't even want my business. All in all, not professional at all. She did an OKAY job, my lab's coat wasn't very even and when I picked him up he was still soaked! The way she was acting I thought maybe my baby would come out marvelous. Nope, not the case. If I do decide to go there again, I will definately make sure to ask for another groomer. That's if I decide to go back. UPDATE: So I got a message saying I was funny and apparently this is a fake review? They also told me there is a new manager there if this is a legit review? First off, I'm not going to sit here and try to convince people I'm a legit customer or whatever. I am just voicing my experience. I also went to send them a message but they deleted their account. I've been coming this location ever since I got my guinea pig here. For most of my trips, I never had any problems and the people working there were extremely nice and helpful. You can tell that they like their jobs and animals for that matter. The only reason I took off a star because the things are a bit expensive compared to getting them online but I don't have a choice most of the time. Overall, a good place for all your pet needs and I still continue to stop by when I don't need anything just to see if there are new guinea pigs available for adoption. read more

As soon as I heard we were approved to adopt our dog, I went to Petco to prepare. The staff were very helpful, particularly Mike and Lauren. They could tell I was a "first timer" and offered great suggestions on food, treats, etc. When Lauren realized I was adopting she gave me the adoption booklet with a bunch of coupons. By far the absolute worst possible place you could take your dog to get groomed. This is the second time I have taken my poodle mix dog for grooming. We keep him on the longer and shaggier side and the first time we took him I gave little direction and ended up with a shaved body and mullet top. Although I was shocked, I took the blame since I gave very little instruction. We tried again today and explicitly stated we just wanted him to be washed and trimmed both on his body and head. The person grooming him called me twice asking permission to shave him, where I directly stated not to shave my dog. She expressed that it would take longer and cost an additional $14. I replied explaining that that was understandable and we were fine with that. My boyfriend then went to pick him up because we received a text alert and he was ready. However the woman asked him if he was allowed to be shaved. He confirmed that we did not want him to be shaved, just trimmed. Where she then complained that it would take longer. We were then called an hour later and low and behold, THEY SHAVED MY DOG COMPLETELY. Honestly, if the people working here are more concerned with how long it will take them to trim and groom a dog then clearly they are not interested in customer service. I will absolutely never come here again, even though I live so close. I strongly urge anyone with a poodle mix dog to think twice before bringing them here for grooming. read more

Interesting I found the same as the other Yelper in regards to the staff. You have to be assertive to get the staff attention. One way I might try to get their attention next time is to wear one of their uniforms (They seem to pay attention to each other). The store is well stocked and organized. Unbelievably cruel to keep a single parakeet all by itself with no company...it was the only one in the exhibit that used to house at least a few dozens parakeets. The bird was shaking in the corner and hid itself any time anyone got close to it. I only spent a few minutes near the cage (was looking at their dog bones) and saw a few different people comment on how upset they were that the bird was being treated in such a way. Love it here! We brought our German shepherd puppy here for puppy 1 and puppy 2 classes, Carmen is like the dog whisperer! She's great with the puppies and he loves her! He learned so many commands that he always responds to even after being out of class. She was great to work with and was very patient with both the dogs and owners making sure each dog was able to do the command before moving on to the next one. I would recommend not just Petco, but Carmen as a trainer to anyone! read more
