Looks to be a great restaurant from the reviews. We went on a Friday evening, and there were only two tables available. The place was busy and people seemed to be enjoying themselves. We sat down and observed that many of the people in the restaurant seemed to be local and know one another. We waited for 20 minutes. Still no server. We waited another 10 minutes and someone finally came over to get our drink order. 15 more minutes passed...still no drinks. At this point, we opted to leave. I would imagine that the food is very good and that the people are nice...but we will never know and never return. read more

The atmosphere of MaGhee's is everything I look for in a neighborhood pub. It's small, it's dimly lit, almost everyone knows everyone else. On the flip side the service can be slow, depending on what you order from the food menu and the time of day the meal can be mediocre, and their beers are limited. I wanted a black and tan but they don't carry dark beers. Plenty of IPAs that I don't drink tho which is an automatic star deduction on my reviews. Stopped in for a lunch yesterday (a Monday). The place was full but one table which I took in front of the door, but everyone was finished with their meals and was waiting for their checks, it was the back side of the lunch rush. I ordered the ahi wrap with pasta salad to eat there and a steak sandwich to-go to bring to my hubs at work at the hospital. He he enjoyed his sandwich. My seared ahi was ok with the wasabi mayo, but without it it didn't have much flavor. Just by brushing it with some toasted sesame oil for the sear would elevate it immensely. The mayo provides a nice balance, is cool and creamy, and not overpowering while providing the much needed moisture to the otherwise dry wrap. The pasta salad had a bit too much mayo but overall had nice flavor and would pair well with any of the items on the menu. read more

I joined a few co-workers for an early lunch. We arrived around 11:15, were seated, and our orders were taken quickly. However, even though we arrived early and were waited on quickly, our food took quite a while. The Reuben was good but on the small side. The potato salad was excellent, and that says a lot because I'm pretty picky about my potato salad. It's a cute little spot, but I don't think I'll be returning unless it's for after-work drinks with my coworkers. read more

Today was my first day to eat at MaGhee's on the Hill. I joined a friend who frequents this establishment for dinner and I was super excited to give it a try for lunch. The food was excellent and I was already looking forward to return trips. As soon as we finished eating, the server quickly brought our checks and we paid immediately upon receiving the check. As soon as our receipts were collected, a restaurant employee came to our table and said that we needed to leave or to move to the bar, because we were sitting at the ladies' table (as she pointed to 2 ladies sitting at the bar). I'm sure we looked stunned -we had just completed our meal, I had a full glass of my beverage (bad habit of waiting to drink after I've eaten), and truthfully, we couldn't believe what we were hearing. The employee repeated again that we had to leave or move to the bar where she would be glad to buy us a drink for moving. One of the ladies waiting sitting at the bar piped in and said "that's always our table." There were other tables available but we were apparently sitting at a table frequented by the "ladies." The restaurant was busy and other guests looked stunned at what was happening as it's a small space and the employee wasn't discreet with her request. I have never been so humiliated and embarrassed in a public place. My friend and I quickly exited the building and will most certainly never return. Truly a very rude, very disappointing experience. I would never recommend this establishment to anyone. read more

We stopped here for lunch while we were headed to LA. The filet wrap was tasty and the service was friendly but parking was a bit of a challenge and the timing was a bit off- salad arrived about five minutes before everything else. A hidden little gem at the bottom of the Hill! I stumbled across MaGhee's about 3 years ago and have enjoyed them ever sense. It's a quaint, hardhood floor open dining atmosphere with lots of Mobile charm. Nice happy hour with lots of jovial spirits swinging by to talk about what's going on around town! However, I think anyone would be impressed with the quality and flavor that's packed in to the limited menu! I've tried many of the daily specials (always a good choice), the chicken pasta Alfredo (my kids love this when I bring it home), apps, salads, you name it. I've never been disappointed. (Check out my pics) Today I started with a cup of the Crawfish and Tomato Bisque (a 1st for me). It was very well seasoned, a nice consistency, and the crawfish tails were very tender. I added a dose of black pepper to mine for a little flavor. For my entree I went for the main reason I patron MaGhee's...the Filet w/ bordelaise sauce! My med-rare preference has never been less than perfectly cooked. Though I am a traditional grilled-steak guy, the Bordelaise sauce is very nice for a change every now and then. The grilled veggies mix side was very well flavored and consisted of zucchini & yellow squash and, pleasantly, some marinated artichoke hearts that added a unique quality. DON'T MISS THE POTATO CAKES! I love their potato cakes side order. It's a well seasoned startch to compliment the steak and veggies...but can also stand on its own as an appetizer. At $25.95 that filet meal does have a price tag but that comes with a salad, grilled veggies and potato cakes!! I like the deal. I always have to take some home. Service is always pleasant. Crowd banter can get a little loud but it's all good! Keep it up MaGhee's! read more

I HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXPERIENCE LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE! I ate lunch at Maghees Grill On the Hill when I was looking at houses/planning for my move to Mobile. I thought it was a GREAT little neighborhood restaurant that I'd like to frequent often. Food was good, everyone seemed to know each other. After I bought my house and moved to Mobile, I decided to have dinner there. Again, thought "this is going to be a great place to eat on a regular basis." I went on a Thursday night with a friend. We both ordered salads, an appetizer, and entrees. I wasn't timing it but I believe it was an hour before our salads arrived. My friend and I were patient because we know things happen. I figured, once we got our salads, things would go more smoothly. I was wrong. After we finished our salads, we waited about 10 minutes for our appetizer. After we finished our appetizer, we waited quite some time for our entrees. Finally, my friend POLITELY asked the server what was going on. It was a polite, quiet conversation. The server apologized for the long wait and advised our food would be out shortly. We continued to wait. Then, the cook came out with our food. I was later told his name was Bobby. When he got to our table, he started YELLING at us, accusing us of yelling at the server. He was acting CRAZY. We immediately got up and headed for the door. Our server came to us and I asked to speak with her outside. She and another server stepped outside and apologized profusely. I asked her if she thought we had yelled at her and advised that was not our intention. She said we absolutely did not yell at her, we simply asked what was going on with our food and she relayed that to the cook. She was in tears. She kept apologizing for how the cook treated us and actually gave me a hug. I told her she was not to blame and that delays happen. I told her the only unacceptable thing was the cook yelling at us. Also, he yelled so loud, other patrons heard. It was embarrassing. She told us the owner/manager's name was Meaghan. I called to speak with Meaghan SEVERAL times over the last few weeks. Left my name and number but she never returned my call. It is clear that the owner does not care how her customers are treated. It's a shame. I was looking forward to going there often. What a gem in Mobile! We were in town from Colorado visiting family and they brought us to the perfect spot for lunch! Our food was fresh and savory with the perfect spice, huge portions and homemade dressings, cooked to perfection, quickly brought from kitchen to table. We had delicious dumpling soup, the Old Shell Salad with fresh greens and a party of fun toppings like artichokes, apples and cranberry with a delicious homemade dressing. A huge bowl of grits with savory, perfectly seasoned and sautéed shrimp, that I swear was better than Emerils. Our men had Reubens that my brother in law comes back each week for, so he tells me. Our server Tiffany was amazing, so sweet and attentive. If you haven't been to Maghees or your visiting Mobile, Alabama, it's a must go to! We will be back! read more

I came here to eat because of the reviews I read. There are a few vegetarian options so I chose the house salad which was fresh and tasty. I ordered tortilla chips which are store bought. The salsa was unexpectedly store bought. I took two bites with salsa and said I didn't want the salsa. I then asked for the artichoke dip which was warm and very good. I got my bill and the server charged me full price for the salsa and chips and artichoke dip. I questioned her why wasn't a discount offered since there was only one order of chips and took just a few bites of the salsa. The mebu indicates that artichoke dip also cones with chips. She said something along the lines that they couldn't re-sell it. She also took away the chips and rest of my dip without asking if I was done. I have some other thoughts on this but hoping I'm wrong. read more

What a great find when stuck in Mobile for an extra day due to a flight cancellation! We trusted the Yelp reviews, and they were not wrong. We tried the seafood bisque, a house salad with blackened shrimp, and the bacon jam burger with potato cakes. The awesome cook came out and chatted amiably for a while. He even shared his secrets for a good roux, and offered us a ride back to our hotel. Very impressed with our waitress as well. Local, high-quality, honest, and GOOD cuisine. read more

The Epicureans Dining Club of Mobile/Baldwin Counties has selected MaGhee's Grill on the Hill as "Restaurant of the Year" for the 2016-17 year. On Wednesday evening, May 24, 2017 the Board of Directors of the club met at MaGhee's and made the presentation. The award was presented to the restaurant owner, Megan Drane, by The Epicureans' President, Coleman Wood, photos attached. The dining event was on February 14, 2017.We would greatly appreciate it if you could see fit to publish this in you magazine. The Epicureans is a fine dining club, with members form both Mobile and Baldwin counties. This club was formed 23 years ago and has been active for this entire time. We meet and dine out once a month at a different restaurant, alternating between the two counties. We endeavor to offer our members a unique dining experience with each event. read more

I stopped in after seeing their sign while at the red light. Nice little place, not a big menu and you can watch the chef prepare your food. I had the Bleu burger. It was OK..nothing real memorable. Definitely a neighborhood place but I wasn't real comfortable there. It wasn't real welcoming by the server. I may go back and try a salad or the soup I just didn't care for the burger. read more
