I'm from England and this kind of experience is quite alien to me! But here goes... I called Magic Data Recovery and spoke to Mike who said he would take care of me, no problem, and that he would pick up my hard drive and call me when he was close. Never got a phone call (I know, I know, alarm bells right there...' So I called him and after waiting all afternoon for him in Santa Monica, asked if I could drop to him in Sherman Oaks. 'Ok'..I thought, wanting so much to have faith in him. Upon arrival, I dropped off my broken hard drive and a transfer hard drive. I asked how long it would take, whats the process etc...to which he just kept replying "I don't know, how long is a piece of string?" Are you kidding me? Alarm bells again, I know...but he went into a huge 30 minute monologue (There were independent witnesses) about karma, god, people that come from afar to him, and that I should trust him. (I only wanted to know how long it takes; 24/48 hours?? 3 weeks??) So I leave after Mike saying he'll call me in the morning after its been on 'the machine' all night, to give me an update. Me thinking 'oh, he's gonna tell me if its possible to recover my files.' Morning comes; no phone call. Quel surprise. So, I call and say 'Hi Mike it's Annie, just checking in on the status of my hard drive' You'll NEVER guess what his response was "LOOK, YOURE REALLY ANNOYING ME NOW, I TOLD YOU ID CALL YOU WHEN I KNOW SOMETHING.WHY YOU CALL ME, YOU CALL JUST TO CHIT CHAT? HUH? IM BUSY, I DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS' Wow. He then told me to come and pick up my hard drive!!! So, dumbstruck, I went to pick up my hard drive and he WASNT THERE!!! I had to WAIT for AN HOUR for him to come to the office! Upon his return, he brought over my broken hard drive to the desk, without my transfer drive. I asked him to please bring my transfer drive to the desk, to which he replied 'CALL THE DETECTIVES' to his colleague!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He shouted at me to leave, kept saying 'I was on camera' (I'm not the one yelling and being abusive, by the way!) and then he came round the desk at which point I actually thought he was going to put his hands on me because he was so enraged. Then he threatened to lock me in if I didn't leave!! All this went by very quickly and left me very shaken, and I'm I'm quite a toughy! I'm sure I'll receive lots of emails from people who have been satisfied, and believe me, I really wanted him to be great. But this guy is far too unprofessional, emotional with extreme personality traits to be working in a the service industry. I only hope that he doesn't go too far one day and frighten the wrong girl, because he got off lightly with only a Yelp review from me. read more

I rarely if ever write company reviews but the excellent service from Magic Data Recovery compelled me to tell the world about them. Like a lot of us I bought an inexpensive portable drive and (wouldn`t you know it!) it broke days after the warranty. The drive made a scary beep when plugged in and would no longer spin. I read online that this meant, in other words, "it`s toast". I contacted the external hard drive company and they suggested it was the cable - I received a replacement cable and it still didn't work - it was definitely the drive. So I researched what would be the best, most reliable, most experienced, and best-recommended hard drive recovery company. From the testimonials and their Web site information it was clear and looked to be the best candidate. I was not disappointed. From the moment I met with them they were caring, genuine, and obviously they knew what they were talking about. It was clearly a mechanical error - which from what I had read online from others with a similar case, it was a serious issue. I had a lot of content on the drive but most importantly I had photos, the last 2 years of my engagement. Without the drive these photos would have been completely lost, they looked at the drive and did all of the work quickly and with professionalism - which I know must have been painstaking given the drive wasn`t even spinning before. I received not only all of my photos but a 100% recovery, all transferred to an excellent drive. These guys even went above and beyond to help ensure the new drive worked optimally with all of my computers at home. This one star review is because of the owners attitude. He was so nice to me when I came in to have my hard drive repaired. After he gained my business and completed the work, his attitude changed drastically. When I went to pick the hard drive up, I waited in a very short line. When it was my turn, I simply stated that I was there to pick up my hard drive. Before I could say anything else, without skipping a beat...he says, "who are you? I don't know who you are." I gave him my name. He then walks away shaking his head like I was was stupid and/or a bother to him. I was just about to give him over $200 for his services. He then comes back with my new hard drive. He plugged it in and showed me that he had recovered everything. I was so excited; as I thought these files and photos were gone forever. I simply asked him what happened to the other hard drive. Was it even worth giving back to me? Keep in mind I'm not a tech guy...I don't know what happens with these old hard drives. He got very frustrated and told me that they destroy everything and that he never gives them back. Not a problem at all...I was just wondering. Once again...he shakes his head like he was irritated with me or I was stupid for asking that question. I kept my mouth shut, paid for his services, thank'd him, and left. Sir, you should be grateful for any and all business you get. Don't be in business if you don't want to answer peoples questions. You've never had a question for a a business owner that was providing you a service? How would you feel if someone did that to you? It's true what they say about tech people. Book smart...but no street smarts or personality. Hence...how boring these people really are. There are PLENTY of other places in LA to go to for these services. Great service, affordable prices!!!! Was very happy to get my data so fast!!!! Amazing, great service, reasonably priced, & recovered all the data from my damaged disk. i took my drive in to Hard Drive Data Recovery services after I found them online. My hard drive had previously crashed a few weeks before and I was just getting around to finding a local company who may be able to recover the data. After contacting them directly for more information, I dropped off the drive for diagnostics. Other companies I inquired with were either offering similar solutions, I felt comfortable proceeding with Magic Data Hard Drive Recovery Services seeing as I was able to drop it off with them in person. Called in a panic on a sunday. With a crashed external hard drive with all of my important data on it. Including very important irreplaceable photos. Mike met me at the store told me he would do everything you can possibly do to salvage it. Called me 24 hours later told me that my disk has been damaged and was irreparable but the data with recoverable. Told me in order to recover everything I would have to get spare parts shipped in to rebuild the drive. And it would have cost over $800. Which I couldn't afford. He then said he would try and salvage my irreplaceable photos by going through the drive manually and trying to piece together just those photos. It took him six hours but he recovered my photos. the rest of my data is still on the drive for when I can afford it. But he was a lifesaver. And charged me a very reasonable amount. Mike was very clear about what he was going to do and how long it would take. He went WAAAAAAY above and beyond the call of duty to help me. He even stayed many hours late (on a weekend evening!!!) to finish the task because I needed it by the next day. He did a superb job and was very kind and courteous. I have rarely encountered such devotion and clarity in the service industry in general, and after asking many other places to help me (and after it turns out they couldn't do what they told me they could do time-wise over the phone) it was a relief to find Mike. This guy spends more time hiding negative reviews than he does running his business. Took $45 to tell me I had a bad motherboard. Coffee was spilled in the keyboard. The computer wouldn't boot, so that didn't take a genius. But told me they opened it up and looked at it and there was cream and sugar all over the circuit board. I knew that was a lie because the coffee that was spilled in the keyboard was black!! Got extremely rude when I didn't opt to have the board replaced. If you're not spending a load of money worried about your computer, Mike has no time for you. Extremely rude and insulting. Absolutely the worst customer service I've ever witnessed. So I wrote a bad review. Lo and behold, he managed to take it down. We'll see how long this one lasts...... I can't say enough about the guys over at Magic Data Recovery! I went there hoping for a miracle and they delivered. I had aToshiba Canvio Connect II 1TB Portable hard drive that somehow became corrupted and I was unable to access any of the data. I had everything on that drive.
