This small intimate soul food establishment was recommended by someone at the hotel we were staying at. They have a nice selection of your traditional soul foods, chicken, smothered pork chops, and even salmon, along with sides such as greens, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and candy yams, etc. We chose to dine in and the food came out hot and flavorful, however, it was a little heavy on salt. Truly loved this place. You will enjoy the taste of some good quality soul food. The potato salad was a LITTLE bland, but nothing a little bit of seasoning won't fix. After a bit of delay my takeout order was ready. They should have been more ready to serve lunch customers. Regardless the food I ordered was delicious. That's there but magic soul food when it came to the food. The food is pretty good. I had a fried pork chop chicken wings. It was OK for the most part. The fried pork chop is what I like the most but other than that, the place need to work need to be remodeled for sure. It just just needed some work like that's not a place. The ambience was not too appealing to the eye. I can say that not a service was a hit or miss because it depends usually if you walk in, she's on her phone. The young lady has on her phone and depending if she like you should give me a great service. If you don't like you, she does have a attitude. I ordered the fried pork chop dinner with collards and candied yams. So first for $13.95 you get 2 pork chops, and. 2 sides. I am used to meat, rice and 2 sides. However, I still ordered because I wanted to support. For the food, the pork chops were decent. Fried hard like I asked, although they could've been harder and they were salty. The greens were also salty as well. Very salty. They also tasted a little burnt or over headed. I can't really describe the taste. The candied yams were straight sugar. Now I know that they are called candied yams but that sugar/syrupy yams. All of the things that I mentioned above is why I steer clear of soul food restaurants and just prefer to cook my own food. The pork chop was way too salty, the salmon under cooked, green beans are from a can, macaroni & cheese was mediocre at best . We found Magic Soul Food on Yelp and drove 30 minutes to give it a try. And...to make a long story short...it was worth the TIME. I emphasis time because to enjoy this outstanding soul food...you're gonna have to have a little time to spare. The restaurant is located in the corner of a busy strip mall. It was easy to access and the exterior was clean and well maintained. The interior of the restaurant was also clean and we were greeted as soon as we entered. There are a few tables for dine-in and those were all occupied when we entered...which was fine because we had called our order in for pick up. We had called an hour earlier to place our orders and had been told that there was an hour wait on the turkey wings. We really wanted the wings so we went a head and placed our entire order and advised them that we'd be by in an hour. When we arrived though...there was still a wait. In fact, we waited another 30-40 minutes for our food. Normally, I'd say this is unacceptable...but when we did get home and got the food in our mouths...the long wait seemed trivial. We ordered the following: Fried chicken which was season well and cooked well. Smothered turkey wings that were meat-falling-off-the-bone good. Honey glazed salmon and melted in your mouth. Shrimp and grits, perfectly seasoned shrimp that was just slightly over cooked. Amazing mashed potatoes, greens, potato salad, corn, mac and cheese and yams. There wasn't a bad bite to be had! We would definitely recommend this spot to other soul food lovers. Our only suggestions would be to improve time management because some customers are going to be majorly turned off by the really long wait...and...add some cream to the grits. I have come to this spot a few times over the years, and every time, the customer service is lousy. The servers and cashiers tend to give attitude and generally act indifferent toward you. However, I did return two or three times to give the place other chances and try other items on the menu. Same treatment each time. However, I came back today while hungry and found myself waiting for five minutes while one cashier was on the phone and the other was doing something on the iPad. No one acknowledged me while I waited to have my order taken. While I try to be patient with customer service and understand that sometimes people have off days, the service here is consistently poor. It has been several months to a year since my previous visit, and I cannot tell if the quality of the food is the same because I never got to order. I ended up with fried instead of baked chicken and had to wait a few more minutes for them to switch it out. She did compensate me with an extra piece of chicken. When I sat down to eat the food I realized that she didn't put any utensils in the bag. No fork, no knife, no napkins. Luckily I was home so it wasn't that big of a deal. Now on to the food.... Baked chicken: Rating 2/5. It was sitting in a bed of chicken grease, broth, or whatever and tasted soggy. It was also a bit bland. I wasn't a fan. Macaroni and cheese: Rating 3/5. My family and I ordered here on a Saturday at around 7:20 pm. This restaurant was recommended by a friend pre-covid days and I finally tried them out. With that being said I was truly disappointed with the food. The Uber delivery was quick so the food arrived while it was still warm. I had the turkey wings, collard greens with Mac and cheese. My daughter and wife had the salmon. I don't know if it was the time of day but the food was dry like it had been sitting for awhile. The Mac and cheese was ok nothing out of the ordinary. They forgot my cornbread that I wanted to eat with my collards. The collard greens were to sweet, tangy and salty. Another issues with the greens was that they leave the stem on them which gives them that tangy flavor. The turkey wings were dry and way to salty for any human being to consume. The salmon was a little dry but again way to salty. We ended up throwing the food away. I called my friend and asked why did she recommend this place and she advised that she stopped eating there months ago because of how salty the food was...‍. We had seen a preview of the food on tv and it looked great. They seemed to be bombarded on this Friday afternoon but my hubby was able to order over the phone for take out. We ordered the salmon & shrimp dish with broccoli & yams. His dish was the smothered turkey, rice & collard greens. We also ordered a side of mac & cheese & some cornbread. First off the meat portions were generous. The salmon was cooked perfectly drizzled in a glaze sauce, nice & moist. The sweet yams were amazing. My husband enjoyed the turkey , the rice ok. We were expecting the mac & cheese to be over the top but unfortunately it did not meet our expectations, hardly any cheese you could see it was used sparingly and so it was more pasta. Maybe that was a rushed version. Im hoping its not this way all the time. I really enjoyed the cornbread, really the best moist tasting delight. HORRIBLE PORTION SIZE FOR SALMON DINNER!!!! I ordered 3 salmon dinners and each piece of salmon was 1-inch in width which is a breakfast portion NOT A DINNER PLATE!!! Now I have NEVER witnessed this at any restaurant and not even a food truck would do this BS! I have ordered salmon dinner before, in fact I left a review with a pic so check it out and you will see the major difference in size back then as opposed to now. I would've been satisfied if 1 dinner plate was 1inch wide but not all 3, which pushed me to write this review. It's like they had 1 normal portioned size salmon and because it's 1.5 hrs before closing they decided to cut that 1 piece into 3 so they don't have to do the extra work and since I had it delivered they didn't have to look me in the face to give this nonsense to me. I waited so long for the food to be delivered bc it wasn't ready yet. Other than that the flavor was good as the 1st time I've tried it.
