    Sesame chicken
    Chris M.

I'm happy I got takeout lunch here on a Thursday instead of Friday, because if I came on a Friday then it would have ruined the start to my weekend. I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special which comes with an egg roll and wonton soup, at $8 was super cheap. I was thinking it would have fried rice (or white), instead it had a very dry brown rice. I ended up eating one bite of that and same with the egg roll. The wanton soup turned out alright, the wantons were small but the broth was good. The soup crisps tasted stale so I only had a few. On to the main attraction- the hailed sesame chicken! It was actually pretty decent. The sauce was flavorful and not too thick, but there were way too many sesame seeds. Overall the chicken was good enough to salvage an extra star. I would pass on this place

Some of the best General Tso chicken I've had in quite a long time.

I've already seen some reviews complaining about the inside looks of the joint. Let's get this point across: if you are going to a cheap Chinese diner called Magic Wok, don't think it's going to look like Trump Hotel. They do good for what they have. This is my first time as I just moved from Alabama a year ago. The soup they give you as an appetizer is pretty on point (choice between hot and sour, egg drop, and wonton). The crispy chips were alright, my fiancée seemed to think they were fantastic so it's subjective I guess. The food was on point, crispy, and saucy. Don't listen to the critiques of the aesthetics.

My 200th review. While it's not a 5 star one, it's a very special one. If you had asked me as an 11 year old what I thought of Magic Wok, I shyly would gave shown you 5 fingers, one for each star. I'm slightly saddened to say much older, I cannot give 5 stars. Regardless, I am very happy to see they are still around. Magic Wok was the site of many family dinners, parties and other events surrounding the growth of my Papa's investment company in the 90s. I was a snob even at that young age, so I can honestly say the service and food was impeccable in those days. Certainly, as my final meal in the DC area before returning to California for good, I would experience the same service and share great memories. My Mother, not as excited about those memories, joined me for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. The first thing I noticed was the change in decor. Of course, that should be the case so many years later, however it just felt as though it lacked something and each table lost the intimacy I remembered. The back room our events were held in though is still there, though looked a bit sad. Maybe that's just because it was empty. Our lunch orders were promptly taken by a very nice young gentlemen. My Mama can be fickle when it comes to ordering, I was impressed with the server's ability to work through the ordering process with her and his level of patience, the smile never left his face. Our drinks were promptly brought out and our appetizer (wings) followed shortly after. I was immediately disappointed by the wings. While not a huge fan of traditional wings, I love Asian style wings. For some reason, both Mama & I expected an Asian appetizer when we ordered, but it was just regular ole fried chicken, no special seasonings (that I could taste), no special sauce, nothing. They were hot and crispy, so not bad on that end, but I wouldn't order them again. I could just go to Popeyes for that. Next our meals, arrived. I chose the hunan chicken and my Mama chose the orange chicken. My meal was delicious. It was the perfect size for lunch, fresh tasting, great flavor and at a great price. I liked my Mama's orange chicken also, though it was too saucy for both of us. I think that most people would like that though. The real downer to our meal was that some business associate of Magic Wok's (maybe a vendor) was sitting at a table in the middle of the restaurant conducting business. He was incredibly loud, brash, sloppy and just unpleasant. While the representatives of Magic Wok dealing with him handled themselves in a professional and quiet manner, they should have sat this rude man in the back room so not to disrupt their guest. It was honestly awful and put a damper on my goodbye lunch with my Mama. We rushed through our meals to get out of there. Not how I saw the afternoon going. On the plus side the health inspector was there and after she completed her work, she ordered food. That's always a great sign for cleanliness! The fact that I know all that though is a negative as again those conversations were held much too loudly. All in all, I would return here in passing, for carry out, or when experiencing a bit of nostalgia but perhaps wouldn't go out of my way again. I sense dinner would be a better time to come in when maybe so much business isn't going on.

This place isn't bad. The food is a step above your average Chinese take-out joint. I say give it a go, but don't take your date here.

We came here for an early lunch, and we ordered: +Crab Rangoon - triangular-shaped, generously filled with the cream cheese/crab mixture; could have been a bit more crispy, as it was slightly chewy; the sweet & sour dipping sauce was a great complement +Chow Fun - we opted for the beef as a protein; the noodles were extremely wide, which was great; you can kick it up with chili oil and soy sauce; beef were plentiful +Mongolian Beef - lots of onions and scallions, this had a good flavor; you can add more of a saltiness to it with soy sauce This is definitely a family-run and -operated eatery, as the youngest son was taking orders and manning the register; all orders were made-to-order, so what you will be receiving will be super fresh! The owners were very kind, friendly, and attentive! There were a couple of tables inside, so we chose to dine in. Everything tasted fresh, not at all salty, and prepared with care and love. I'd love to try out their lunch specials and other chef specialty entrees on the next visit. This is a family-run restaurant and it was great to see that they had their very young son manning the counter and the cash register in a totally professional way. The menu is straight-forward with the usual and expected dishes. One dish I did not expect to see, but did, were hush puppies! Everything we ordered for takeout was excellent. Portions are generous and inexpensive. Note: there are two tables in the restaurant if you prefer to dine in. We ordered egg drop soup, crispy pork wontons, Mongolian Chicken and Mongolian Beef. The egg drop soup was better than your typical egg drop soup, with a flavorful broth and silky but still hearty texture. The wontons were packed with pork and came with a tasty bright red dipping sauce that complimented the wontons nicely. The Mongolian Beef and Mongolian Chicken are the same dish, with the only difference being the meat. These dishes were very well prepared with just the right amount of onion, scallion and sauce. The beef had a delicious slightly smoky flavor and was cut into nicely shaped pieces. The Mongolian dishes automatically come with white rice. Speaking of the rice, it had a great texture and just the right amount of moisture. Take out orders may take up to a half hour for them to be prepared, but it is well worth the wait. We will be back.

STEAMED CHICKEN MOMO (6) - 13 The chicken momos sat on top of a creamy chili garlic sauce that was a bit spicy. The momos were juicy and the filling was soft and flavorful. Good appetizer to share between the three of us. BUTTER CHICKEN - 19 Creamy and rich, tasted a bit sweeter than I was used to, almost like a chicken tikka masala. Pretty standard, but got the job done. Plenty of chicken in our curry. SAAG PANEER - 19 Vibrant green with the perfect loose, creamy texture that wasn't too chunky. Good amount of paneer in our portion. The spinach actually tasted like spinach, which I find rare at other restaurants that also serve saag/palak paneer. Definitely one of the better ones I've had! GARLIC NAAN - 4 Pretty typical, but good nonetheless. It was a bit greasy than I would have liked, but went well with the curries when we wanted to switch between bites of the basmati rice. Portions were pretty big and generous. Everything we ordered hit and all above average. The three of us were quite full after sharing an app + naan + two entrees. Stop by if you're in the area!

Always appreciate the minimalist yet still eloquently-decorated aesthetic of the restaurants, complete with a window to view the kitchen, which itself seemed relatively clean and well-kempt. Ordered the Woodear Mushroom and Mint Salad, and the Mogu Shiitake Mixian Ramen. The mushrooms were light and chewy, yet savory with citric and garlicky elements, and overall very refreshing. The ramen was solid in most respects, with a decent variety of vegetables and multiple proteins, including tofu, shiitakes, soybeans and marinated egg (which I enjoyed despite typically not liking hard-boiled egg too much). The noodles were a little bland, however, and didn't taste like they absorbed much of the broth. Overall, I'd say 4.5 stars are more accurate; YbP Noodle House is a regular haunt for me because the quality is there in most respects.
