On March 22nd my family and I adopted are puppy from this organization in an event in Westchester IL. On that Sunday we drove home a complete family now with Kia Torres now part of it. You would guess at this point it a happy ending while driving into the sunset. But, It wasn't. Day 1 Sunday. The first time we saw him go #2 it was notice that the stool was soft. But he seem able to function well. Day 2 Monday. His stool went from soft to fluid like, so we call Mag Mutts for guidance and they recommend that we take him to the care center in Elmhurst. So we made the appointment for the next day. At this point he's now showing sign of discomfort from the diarrhea. Day 3 Tuesday. His health check appointment, they prescribed de-worming medication and medication for the diarrhea. He was also tested for the Parvo virus and the results to the test were negative. When we got home he was active, but still had diarrhea. Day 4 Wednesday. He was having his best day yet, but still had diarrhea. Day 5 Thursday. He stops eating and drinking water. We called both the organization and the clinic. They said to bring in on Friday. His condition was start to become concerning. Day 6 Friday. I got up at 5am to start my day and noticed my daughter caring for Kia, he seem not as active and was showing signs of fatigue. I called the organization for guidance due to the clinic doesn't open till 8am and it was only 7am at that time. His health went from bad to worse. I then received a text message telling me to take him to the ER hospital in Oakbrook. While on are way to the ER he died in my daughter's arms. I tried CPR while my wife continued to drive. Upon are arrival to the ER the staff only could confirm Kia Torres had passed away. What I did include in the above time-line is all the attention, care, and love we gave him while with us. We are devastated, with it only being the first night without him, it was very difficult for us all. What hurts the most is that he was only 8 weeks old and had so much ahead of him. Are heartache is extremely deep with emotions pull8ng in all directions So the purpose of this review is to ask everyone that is concedering adoption to seek out the knowledge before adopting. Why? Because my Kia died from Pravo virus. The veterinarians told us that he had all the symptoms and that test test result were likely "false positive" both at the ER and clinic. As for feedback to the organization I'm sure your doing the best, but this type of experience and review is an indicator that improvements are needed. A refund was issue and was used to cover the cremation. But not any amount is enough to ease are pain and experience going through this ordeal. In closing I would like for whomever reads this review to say a little prayer to our baby boy Kia Torres. We love you and will miss you dearly Kia. Rest in peace read more

We completed our Adoption Application with Mag Mutts Rescue. Within hours, we received confirmation that we were approved for the adoption process. We met with Michelle at her home, where she was holding the adoption fair. She had plenty of room for pups to larger breeds. It was a large group of people waiting to meet the different dogs. Carol was the foster mom and she met us there. Once we met Squirt, half Chihuahua, we knew it was a great match. The process of completing the forms was painless. Michelle gave us a welcome goodie bag and off we went with our little guy. All the foster moms were a great group of ladies. We will definitely return for future adoption. Dog trainer of 5 years, with 1200 dogs trained under my belt using only safe and ethical methods. I'm sure some folks have adopted some wonderful animals here, but believe all the negative reviews you read. I applied for a puppy who was unfortunately already under consideration by another family. This is completely fine, but we were also rejected as a back up due to their survey. They only would accept someone with older kids and young dogs for "safety" as the puppy is still puppy nipping. Puppy nipping is not dangerous, especially when the dog is 6 lbs. and the owners have handled literal hundreds of dogs. We were also rejected because our dog was too old at 9. She is a small dog, roughly 20 lbs, and still very energetic. She's engaged with puppies and handled their playfulness as well as taught them how to control their energy in very positive ways. Magnificent Mutts would never know this because they made a snap judgment from an outdated survey. The survey, while extremely long, asks questions that make no sense. They assume you are searching by breed and leave no option if you're not. They request info about every pet you've ever had and all past vet info. They seem to require fenced yards. All good things but, necessary? Absolutely not. This is means testing at it's absolute worst along side exorbitant adoption fees. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe the trainer with 1200 hundred dogs trained, a fenced in yard, a family that has been privy to all that experience, and a friendly dog that would help a young pup expend and control their energy(a major reason that dogs are abandoned) is a bad fit. I lost my dog of 11 years suddenly to brain tumor. That happened right before COVID lock down. Have a companion for that long my place was empty and sad. I was looking to foster but most places were not looking for a new volunteers to add to organization and my friend recommended Mag Mutts (she adopted a pup from there) I applied. The process took some time but I has fostered before so had some understanding of the process. I was lucky enough to get to host 2 sets of pups that brighten my time on furlough and then had a grown up dog. Another beautiful soul that was eight me couple weeks. Then came this little crazy beagle mix that I was not planning to fall in love with (but I did) I didn't know if I can adopt her as there were few people that were interested and I waited almost a week to let them know but I filled up the application and the ladies decided that I will be a good fit so she became a permanent fixture in my home. I did read some of the negative reviews and first there is a process to every place and filling out the application is for everyone to get the proper documentation, not sure how that's a bad thing. I was the foster for the dog and still went through the process and I bet if it was recommended through the Foster parent. The rescue will look at that and second we do not pay for food or chew toys and bones so I'm not sure why someone with say that. Second if you adopt a dog that is a strong will and they become aggressive there is most likely a issue with teaching the dog boundaries and establishing how to be assertive. Asking a professional foe help with be the proper way and if you can not handle the dog probably working with the rescue to find a new place for it would be the best option. I think that we all need to take responsibility for how we see things and look at them as someone that dedicates their time every weekend and week to help animals from all over the country. Well not everyone is fitted to have a dog and there are plenty other rescues that could use those people. I'm writing from a foster parent experience over the last couple of weeks. I would not recommend this rescue. Now that I've had a 'behind the scenes' look at how Linda runs her rescue I'm unhappy with their business practices. I've had 3 foster puppies from them and I am breaking ties and going to a new shelter. One of the things that Linda said to me right away that caught me off guard was about the donations people give to her. She said if someone donates retractable leashes she just throws them away because she doesn't use them and they don't like them. I don't even have words for something like that, you actively throw away a donation someone gives you because you don't like the product. You could always try to sell it at a garage sale and use the money for the rescue or donate it a different shelter that could use it. The thing that set me over the edge and made my decision to leave as a foster parent was in regards to my current foster puppy (whom I'm returning to the shelter today). I found a family that wants to adopt the dog, so I called the rescue and told them about the family and how they're interested in the puppy and the person that answered the phone was extremely rude and said ' that's not how this process works' and offered no additional information. Seriously??? You couldn't even say have the family come in to fill out the application or something along those lines. That's ridiculous. I'm doing the rescue a favor by housing the animal, paying for the food, etc and you can't even be bothered to talk to me in a polite manner. read more

I would be cautious about this organization. I was in contact with them about rescuing a husky. The first candidates passed and we were contacted as the second choice. We were very excited and hopeful but I soon became skeptical due to the tone of the e-mails once they changed the original meet day. I couldn't make the second date but I provided three other alternative days that we could do and I was told that they are volunteers and are working around their personal lives. Very odd. I was also told that the husky still need to be spayed so I assumed her recovery would be taken into consideration since we have a high-energy 8-month male of our own (which I communicated to them), but I was told that no, it would be fine that a spay is not a difficult surgery and that their "founder" and trainer would be on-hand to approve the adoption (neither are vets). Why would you send a recovering animal home a day after a serious surgery to a completely new environment? Basically they said they couldn't allow us any recovery time because then that would take up space for new dogs coming in. So jeopardize the health of the dogs you already have in your care? I'm afraid that this place is just trying to roll pups in and out for a quick buck and don't really have their best interests at heart. I hope I'm wrong but I'd be very careful read more

This rescue just wants to get dogs out of their shelter and does not provide accurate/honest information to ensure the dog and adoption family are a good match. We adopted a dog that was supposedly great with people, kids, and other dogs. None of that was true and we now need to be extremely careful anytime a human enters our home (growling/snapping), and can't even get her close to another dog without her trying to attack. There is enough stress and risk associated with adopting a pet without having to worry about getting misinformation from the Rescue. Avoid. read more

This rescue broke me and my family's heart. We had adopted a beautiful male adult German Shepherd, all black coat from them. They said he was great with other dogs, well behaved, good with cats and kids. They said he had been found in the streets of Chicago but had clearly had a home at some point. We fell in love with him and everything seemed to be going well until he got out one day. This dog was absurdly aggressive with other dogs and they lied to our face about it. When we met him they wouldn't let us see him interact with any other living creature aside from us people and we should have known. Three attacks of dogs and people, $20,000 of our insurance's money, and hundreds of dollars of "behavioral" training later, our beloved dog had to be put down. All could have been avoided if they hadn't knowingly given an aggressive dog to inexperienced owners. If that dog had been placed with an experienced handler his story wouldn't have had to end. I have tried twice to adopt a pet with Magnificent Mutts, never received a call back after assurances I would and actually had the pet adopted by someone who arrived at the end of an event after I was told they had several applications to review before mine, which was already on file. This person didn't appear to have an application and was given time after the event closed to get her dog to see how the dogs got along. What happened to the several applications that had to be reviewed? Clearly discrimination. The person with the excuse only s. We never even spoke. Too bad. I am so good with dogs, I have been referred to as the dog whisperer. AND older folks often have more time and availability for rescued pets who have often been through a lot. Magnificent Mutts is a local, volunteer-run organization that rescues pets from kill shelters and helps them find loving forever homes. When I first started looking for a place to foster pets, I was drawn in by the glamour of larger shelters like PAWS and the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago. On a whim, I stopped by the PetCo in Hillside on my way home from work one day and discovered this delightful group of people who are all personally committed to helping dogs and cats on their journey to find a loving family. After working with Mag Mutts for a few months, I realized JUST how different this type of shelter was from the larger (higher turnover) type places. Mag Mutts works almost exclusively with foster families, meaning that each dog or cat that comes through their hands has been cared for and observed by one family for anywhere from a few days to several months. When you visit an adoption day, the volunteers can speak to the temperament of the pet, it's medical needs (all info up front), and it's general personality or quirks. Mag Mutts is honest and upfront about the information they've received (from places they've rescued from) and doesn't claim "purebred" animals or "specialty mixes" if they don't know for sure. If an animal isn't adopted in the first few weeks, Mag Mutts will continue to foster it until they find the perfect home. I find it very reassuring (especially for potential adopters) to know that the volunteers care deeply about each of the animals that come through their doors and the homes where they end up. Many of the volunteers for this organization have fostered pets for years and years and include dog trainers, animal care professionals, and big hearted members of the community. They're a closely knit bunch do a great job running the shelter. The website is updated regularly (as many know to be an annoying fault of MANY other shelters), they have active Facebook and Twitter pages, and have regular adoption events. Long story short: After trying to help return a lost dog, my family and I were racially profiled as dog-nabbers because were Chinese. The man who was also in charge was extremely creepy and unwelcoming; made is literally fear for our safety as well as made the actual Foster Parents (good family friends of ours) feel uncomfortable too. He slowly and creepily approached us in a large van AT NIGHT and asked very odd questions and was extremely vague about the subject. After putting down our beloved 15 year old dog (the eldest of our two dogs), my husband and I have been on a search for a second dog on and off for about half a year. We've had a string of bad experiences. From one rescue that gave us a hard time when a foster didn't work with our current dog, to another shelter that neglected to tell us that a dog we were interested in was one of a bonded pair, to a rescue that didn't feel the healthcare we were providing our current dog met their standards, and would therefor not adopt to us. I have always had dogs and cats in my life that either I, or my family and I have cared for. I've never gone without. My husband and I have taken our pets to the vet and even specialists when there were serious health issues, going above the standard once a year annual visit. We've taken them to training, we feed them well, and provide all the love and exercise we can. So I'm not going to have a shelter manager make me feel bad because I won't follow her shelter's protocol. While I understand that a shelter or rescue group has an obligation to keep their animals safe from any contagious diseases, at the same there needs to be some balance. After the not so great shelter/rescue experiences we considered buying a dog, but we resisted. I contacted a friend who is an a trainer and the trainer of two of our dogs, to hear her thoughts. It seems that this is becoming the knee jerk reaction of shelters to the Canine Influenza. She said that many places now have very strict protocols in place based on fear rather than rational thought. She also went on to say that other potential adopters she knows have also considered buying a pet instead of adoption because the rescues were making it so difficult to adopt. This appears to be a growing issue, and I want to support and recommend shelters and rescues that have a good balance of concern for their animals, like Magnificent Mutts Rescue. We found two dogs on the Magnificent Mutts Rescue website that we were interested in meeting, and the whole process went pretty quick without a hitch. We emailed to confirm that the dogs we were interested in were still available and they were. We were then asked to fill out an application online (which you have to do in advance of meeting any of their animals) and next thing we knew we had an email & call back to answer a few follow up questions. After answering the questions were able to set up a meet & greet with our dog to meet the potential adoptees the same day. Granted, it probably doesn't always happen this quickly, but perhaps the stars were finally aligned for us. It took two days start to finish, and I originally emailed on a Saturday night, hearing back quickly. No home check, no refundable training fee, no personality quiz. You do have to provide references, provide rules and regulations if you rent or live in a condo or town home, and you have to provide vet information for current and previous pets, and MMR WILL call them. All totally reasonable. Another thing to like about MMR, each animal lives with a foster who can give you way more insight about an animals personality and behavior than a shelter who keeps their animals caged most of the day. Also nice about MMR, you get a free follow up exam with a vet from their list, should you not already have a vet of your own. read more

I'm glad that this organization took the time to find excellent foster homes, it means they truly care for animals. They were up to date on all records and information on Konerko. The process was done in a timely fashion and so very thorough with giving information and tips(coupons for petsmart and heart worm meds to get started) on how to care for your new puppy. Whatever you do, DO NOT adopt from this rescue!! We had the most horrific experience with Magnificent Mutts and Rescue this weekend. We adopted a 2 year old dog, who growled at my 7 year old while we were looking at it. Their "behavior specialist", along with the other volunteers, all said not to worry about it and convinced us everything would be fine. Within a few hours of adopting the dog, he mauled my daughters face so badly she had to have a plastic surgeon repair it. She has stitches on 13 different places on her face, more stitches on her finger and ear. Linda refused to take the dog back ("he's yours now," she said), felt no remorse for our poor daughter, and tried to victim shame us. After enough complaining from friends, family and strangers who had heard what happened, the rescue had no choice but to take the dog back. We are disgusted with this place and would never, ever want anyone to adopt from them! read more

This rescue is amazing. I have adopted 3 dogs and 3 cats from them. They truly are into it for the animal and the rescue of the animal they work hard everyday and every weekend putting their family on hold and jeopardizing time with their family for all the animals. Of course the rescues I have adopted, I've had to spend time to train and deal with the issues from the past that others have created, which is in no way no fault of Magnificent Mutts or any of their foster parents. In time each of these animals have become a part of our family and have been wonderful. Many times people forget they are adopting a rescue and do not understand they have to put time and effort into undoing what people have done to these animals and what these animals been through to make them the most magnificent animals they can be and also become your Forever part of your family. So even though I have had some BIG issues with each of my adopted animals, I have worked through them and they have become AWESONE!! The dog I have now would have never lasted came in with fleas, ticks, heartworm, tapeworms, three babies on its side living in the woods for 4 months and skinny. Magnificent treated all the issues, spayed her which was a lot of $$ and provided foster till I adopted her!!! All shots too provided and micro chip and for $300 was well worth all their work and $$ they put out. That is all for only 1 dog. Of course there's always going to be issues they can't resolve including physical/medical issues in some of these dogs and the ratio of that is amazing. With these animals they do their best but Mag Mutts cannot preform miracles in all, things will happen again remember you are adopting A RESCUE with BAGGAGE that "others" created. She placed a dog with severe behavioral issues with my 80yr old grandparents; knowing my grandparents didn't have the mobility or physical capacity to complete the intense training the dog needed. My grandma begged us not to contact Magnificent Mutts, because she didn't want the dog taken away, even though the dog was destroying their carpet and didn't let anyone touch it. A few years later my grandma has passed and my grandpa cannot care for the dog. She would not help re-home the dog. Further she called me and my family irresponsible for not providing the dog with the training it needed, she assumed we did not even try. If you want a dog with severe behavioral issues, adopt from Magnificent Mutts. read more

I adopted my pup from MM last year she came all the way from the streets of PR. As a pup she came with all the usual behavioural issues: needed training..needed to learn not to pee in the house..needed to learn what should not get chewed on.. normal pup or street dog traits. Now after all the right things Ive done for her shes the most interesting funny snuggly mammas girl..couldnt have asked for a better family member. So grateful to MM for bringing her into my life. Linda and ALL the volunteers to amazing and very time consuming work to rescue many many animals. Something Id like everyone to take a moment to think about: -This is a foster based, volunteer rescue....so if your paperwork takes longer than you hoped or you miss that 1 dog that stole your heart..dont be dishearted...dont think they dont care... they have jobs/families/commitments just like we do...please take that into consideration as they spend their free time to process apps/respond to emails and do all the good work they do. -Dogs can act differently in foster homes/adoption events to forever homes but its all in the way you train or treat them. Give it time it's all very very new to them. -If you get frustrated or confused about the rescue process...why not volunteer or foster..at least before you judge..get a better understanding of the work involved in rescuing dogs in various situations. - PLEASE GET YOUR PETS CHIPPED or chip info updated.. so so many are getting lose and the owners may never get them back... most chipped/updated chip pets are returned home within 48hrs or LESS. - and most importantly Adopt- Dont Shop and please get your pets spayed or neutered. read more

July 28, 2018--Adopt 2 male kittens through Magnificent Mutts at the local Petsmart. All indications show they are brothers. Adoption fees--$300.00 plus over $100.00 in necessities. (Litter box, food, carrier, toys etc.) July 29, 2018---Pick up official paperwork and discover that it is incorrect. Paperwork shows both kittens as being brown in color when in fact one is brown and the other is light gray. Also discover that the light gray kitten appears to be sneezing quite a bit. August 1, 2018--discover light gray kitten has some light eye discharge and call vet and make appointment. August 3, 2018---light gray kitten is diagnosed with conjunctivitis and drops are started and finished. Vet visit/drops=$66.50 September 8, 2018---huge family discussion on about how fat the light gray kitten seems to be getting. We wonder if its just because he's not as active as the brown kitten. September 14, 2018---light gray kitten seems to be lethargic so a new vet is called and an appointment is made for September 18, 2018. September 18, 2018---take both kittens to the new vet. Dr. immediately suspects what is wrong with the light gray kitten. A chest x-ray shows that his tummy is full of fluid and a sample of the fluid is drawn. It is determined that this sweet baby has Feline FIP. Dr. explains fatal disease in detail and estimates that kitten may only have 2 weeks to live and it was decided to have him put down. Dr. and staff also discover that the official brown kitten does not have a chip as indicated on all adoption paperwork.--Vet fees $247.00 to include cremation, urn, paw print and a trimming of keepsake fur. I am currently a volunteer with Magnificent Mutts Rescue. I help out with the cat adoption program. Magnificent Mutts stays focused on saving the lives of homeless pets both in the United States and abroad. They also partner with veterinarians so that healthy pets are adopted out. It is vital that new adopters take their pet to the partnering veterinarian within 7 days of the adoption. There is even a free certificate for that use. If you are looking to adopt a healthy pet, Magnificent Mutts Rescue would love to partner with you. I also adopted a cat from this rescue. He was a transport failure as I fell in love with him while rescuing cats from animal control for rescue. He was a healthy 8 month old kitten when I adopted him. A few years later, my vet revealed that my cat had stage II Kidney Disease. I certainly don't blame the rescue for not knowing this information. When you rescue a pet, you don't always get perfection. My cat snuggles with me every evening and I am happy that he is in my life. read more

Very disappointed. We saw some puppies we were interested in adopting, filled out the app. Didn't hear from them. I emailed them asking if one puppy we saw was still available, and they emailed me back stating that they sent us a invite and we didn't show up, so now we're basically put at the bottom of the pile. Unbelievable. Bad impression. And the way they said that was unprofessional. Needless to say we won't ever go to them again. read more

We had a horrible adoption experience with Magnificent Mutts. We adopted Omaha (huskie puppies) whom we renamed Oscar 4 weeks ago. During the adoption our paperwork said "slight" heart murmur. My husband questioned this and a worker said oh I thought it was a 3 or 4 then someone else immediately said oh no it is slight and he will grow out of it. At his follow up checkup a few days later, the Vet said oh this is Omaha who had the level 4 heart murmur. My husband asked if they would ever consider that number sight and they said never. After his checkup the particular Vet that examined him actually thought his heart murmur was more of a 5. The scale is 1-6 (6 being the worst) Oscar immediately had x-rays done to see what was wrong. After the x-ray we found out Oscar had an enlarged heart and needed an echocardiogram. The next day Oscar had an EKG and an echocardiogram. We did contact the rescue and let them know what was going on. The response we got was we will check into why our paperwork was different than what the Vet had. After the 1st echocardiogram was read it was determined Oscar needed to go see a dog cardiologist. The next day my husband and daughter took Oscar to the cardiologist for his 2nd echocardiogram only to be informed that there is nothing that can be done for him. He has a congenital heart defect and they don't know how long he will live. He will go into chronic heart failure. It could be whenever. So instead of enjoying a puppy full of life and looking forward to him growing, we had a puppy who had to take heart medicine, couldn't play with the other dogs because he would get his heart beating too hard, couldn't go on walks because he would get too tired and we had to worry about him 24/7. Magnificent Mutts did send us back our "donation" and a letter that the board decided to refund our "donation" that doesn't even come close to covering the cost of the exams and tests or the value of Oscar. They never once checked in to see how Oscar was doing. 4 weeks later, Oscar went into congestive heart failure. We would never ever recommend this rescue group. All of these tests should have been performed before Oscar was put up for adoption and the adoption family should have had the knowledge of his condition upfront. We are thankful for the time we had him and loved him unconditionally; we just wanted more time with him. read more

This place is very unprofessional. They also were on a list for a christmas promotion through Zappos.com where zappos pays for everyones adoptions from black friday to cyber monday. After emailing them about a dog we were very interstested in through this promotion they emailed us back very late, saying they are only letting one dog go home through that promotion. All this place cares about is the money. Thier priorites are not letting these amazing little animals find wonderful homes, this companies heart is not in the right place. Then proceeded to tell us they were taking their name off the list, we still wanted to move forward with the adoption, but by the time they got back to us the dog we wanted already had had more applicants. This is not a place that really cares about the animals. VERY DISSAPOINTING. read more

To say we are super unhappy with this rescue agency is an understatement. We saw an owner post on fb about a dog she's surrendering back to this place but she still has him so we went to see him after talking/messaging at length. We were never told anything that we had to have not have until late lastnight when owner said the agency won't place him with us cause we don't have a fence! For one that's a huge this that should've been disclosed before having anyone come look at him and fall in love with him. When agency called me today they had nothing but lame bs excuses for everything! I would never recommend anyone to adopt from this place. They are not nice and are fairly condescending when they talk to you. read more
