Two words: Men's Sauna. Seems every year we lose the men's sauna for at least 4 weeks. Currently it's been down since NOV. It's a pricey gym with nice staff and good equipment but the sauna is an ongoing problem. read more

If there's one thing that this place has over all other gyms, it's the atmosphere. There are practically no TVs. Instead, you have big picture windows on one side where you can look out at the lake, the mountains and the sailboats, and on the other side you can watch people playing soccer in the indoor arena. All the equipment is really well maintained too. I can honestly say this is the first gym that I have ever thoroughly loved going to in my life. And it's set in Magnuson Park which doesn't suck. read more

Overall a good gym, decided to go back because the location is convenient and is nice to be the lakeside, and it is not crowded compared to other gyms. I still wish they would close later, 9pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends feels too early. You at least don't feel like you're being kicked out before closing time like other gyms do (no annoying overhead announcements). read more

It's expensive (I get a discount through my girlfriend's work), but besides in January, there not many people and the people that are there are very chill. Staff are friendly. There are enough machines. PLENTY of parking. If you want to always just park your car at the gym, this is the one. The parking lot is huge (I'm guessing that's kinda what you're paying for). The gym is pretty clean and they have very tall ceilings, so it never gets rank with people's BO. It's very well ventilated, so if you're going your absolute hardest, you won't have a tough time breathing or be inhaling sweaty musty air. Updating my review from 10 months ago: Same owner but new manager has breathed new life into the MAC. Staff seems to have more energy and seems happier...new manager is personable, outgoing and quick to say hello, good job, or have a nice day; it's amazing what a bit of positivity can do. Still no bath size towels and that's still a point of contention for me - I especially think these are necessary on mats and in saunas. Trainers come and go and they seem to be hard to find, however, I still think there is a variety to choose from so if a member is looking for a trainer, they could find one to their liking. The MAC recently touched up paint and repainted in some areas which is a huge step in putting a fresh face on- also upgraded their music platform so more choices are available and I'm seeing more frequent cleaning going on by staff. I can't say which machines or pieces, but recently they've moved/repositioned some stuff that makes more sense for flow and ease of use, but they also moved free weights away from the open space where you are likely to use them, so that's kooky but doable - and overall I think rearranging the furniture routinely is good for all. The MAC has made improvements with new management, new attitude and a fresh face! read more

Overall they have great equipment and hours. Easy parking. I don't use classes or the daycare so I can't speak to that. They have some great trainers who are dedicated. For the most part staff is friendly. I just wish it was more clean in general. When doing exercises low to the floor you see dirt everywhere like it's never thoroughly cleaned- windows and all. read more

Great staff, always very accommodating and welcoming. It is the perfect little get away after a stressful day at work. Located perfectly on the water upon arrival you are greeted by lake Washington and the serene hum of the waves brushing against the shore. I have read other comments about hidden fees, but that's not really a fair comment to leave. They charge, in the year I have been there, ONCE maybe twice, and it was 35 dollars. No more towels! They do have washcloth-size cloths available at the front counter for wiping down equipment but have gotten rid of the towels, purportedly as a response to the Covid crisis (though I don't understand the connection), and the guy at the front counter said he didn't know if towel service would return when Covid finally abates. I grabbed a handful of wash clothes to dry off after my shower but bring my own bath towel now. Other than that, a nice facility, except for being forced to listen to the sound of trainers yelling at trainees over a too-loud PA system during classes. :P (Why do so many gyms seem to have this problem? ) read more

A great local gym if you live in the area. Everything is clean, the bathroom is nicely kept. The equipment is top notch, as well as, there is a great selection. I love all the variable movements and equipment that are available. Basketball court on site is awesome. Love to practice dribbling. Looking forward to using the day care soon enough. A bit on the expensive side as far as membership goes, but is worth it if you use it often. read more

There are a lot of great things about this gym and a few opportunities for improvement, IMO. Pros: Friendly staff Spacious locker rooms Towels (oddly a lot of gyms do not provide this) Hammer Strength equipment (my favorite) Plenty of space on gym floor even at peak hours SQUAT RACKS - thank you! Lots of free weight and cardio options. Recommend: More cleaning spray and towels to promote cleaning by gym users. I've noticed a lot of users of the facility do not clean equipment after using. Space underneath equipment needs more frequent cleaning. Locker rooms are clean but probably need more active oversight during peak hours. Needs more Hammer Strength equipment (doesn't hurt to ask ;) ) Overall my favorite thing about the gym is that it caters to advanced weightlifting without feeling like a "bro" gym. read more

This is a good gym but expensive, if it weren't for my corporate discount I wouldn't be a member. It a large facility with every machine you could imagine. The staff seems to be interested it keeping up with the latest in fitness as they have been adding new equipment recently. The locker room contains a sauna which is nice but it's pretty dirty. For a gym this nice I would except better cleanliness. There are dust bunnies in all the corners and caked dirt in many of the machines. My old gym worked with Northwest Center to employ individuals with developmental disabilities to be part of the cleaning crew and the gym was spotless, I wish MAC would do something like that. read more

This gym is the best deal in town or at least in North Seattle. I've explored a lot of gyms in Seattle and this is near the top of my favorites list. The gym is large and open with plenty of room to move and get into your workout, even during peak hours. The equipment is all fairly new and the gym seems to have a knack for acquiring new products that fit my needs at least. When I first joined there wasn't nearly as many barbell stations and Olympic, CrossFit opportunities but now this place is loaded! I love this gym and wish I still worked out here. I moved south and had to find a new place to workout. My only complaint would be that other gym members don't really pick up after themselves. The basketball court was a perk to me but it was often filled with classes or high school students who get a discount at the gym. read more

They're the only game (gym) in town so they don't have to try too hard. Not a great sense of "community" or friendly vibe with some exceptions. Cons: There are a few staff members and trainers who are awesome! Other staff... not so great. It's a miracle if you walk in and are greeted by someone at the front desk, much less a smile. Some of the members are pretty rude, inconsiderate and uptight (avoid eye contact, don't clean their equipment or out away weights, spacial unawareness, etc). I just never was digging the environment and the leadership from the top down seems to be lacking - with some exceptions. Very inconsistent front desk service e.g. one young woman who works in the morning stated to me that they will no longer let members leave their car keys up front to be stored in the desk. As I'm leaving my workout I see a member picking up their keys... from the front desk. This happened a few more times to my astonishment *sigh* Pros: some staff and members are exceptionally awesome. Tyger, one of the managers is always friendly and her and Chauncey are incredibly hard workers. Joseph at the front desk is equally as awesome. I'm very impressed with many of their trainers too, and the group fitness classes are tremendous. Sara's battle ropes classes are a great workout and a solid group of regulars. The equipment and machines, and free weights are very good too. Overall I'm not impressed with the MAC and their customer service and overall "vibe" is pretty lackluster. Case is point, I canceled my membership to go back to my old gym (more climbing, free weights, martial arts, yoga, etc) and had a month to use the MAC until my membership officially expired. I go in to get what I thought was my final workout and say goodbye to some of the staff and members who I liked... only to be told my membership expired the day before. That's fine. I assumed (incorrectly) that the young woman at the front desk would show some initiative to me, being a *former* member and all and simply allow me to go workout - since my membership literally expired the previous day. She told me she would have to charge me a "drop in fee" of $15. The money obviously wasn't the point, it was the simple principle and was the perfect embodiment of my experience as a member of the MAC... read more

I really enjoyed working out here, really clean and nice locker room which includes a sauna. Highly recommend coming here to work out.

Update: While I never did hear back about rates in email or on the phone, I did get information when in person. We signed up for a family account (mainly since it's close by and my fiance had a package of training sessions he'd never used), and have been using the gym since then. Pros: staff is friendly, facilities are decent, equipment is kept clean. Cons: we've had the worst luck trying to keep seeing trainers... the really solid ones are always booked, and the newer folks we've tried keep leaving. I'll update this review once I manage to actually get another training appointment. read more

I am a member at MAC (going on three months now) and am almost totally happy there. To the reviewer who was disappointed by the children's offerings, I feel I must defend MAC on your comments: I was told up-front that there was no guarantee that children left in the care of Kids Club would go to the inflatables- It's something they do if and when they can. I respect that they decide when to visit the inflatables based on the staff available and the kids in their care. My toddler needs plenty of 1:1 attention for safety at the inflatables, so I don't want them going unless they are able to be there for her. The inflatables can be a total war zone for the littler ones! The Kids Club is clean, well-stocked and much nicer than the kid rooms at other gyms I toured in the area. I was also clearly told that Kids Club charged a per use fee. No surprises there. The gym is clean and not nearly as chaotic as the new 24 Hour Fitness on Northgate, my second choice. Yeah, you pay a premium but in exchange you get a cleaner, classier facility and fewer people working out around you. They don't hammer obnoxious music into your skull, the machines are state of the art and it's never too busy. Plus, I've yet to encounter a creepy, leering, overly pumped meathead (a common negative for us ladies). The locker room is someplace I would actually take (and enjoy) a sauna and a shower. I usually just do cardio followed by strength training. MAC has enough cardio machines unless you go at the peak time and absolutely MUST have ONE SPECIFIC MACHINE. There are different conditioning stations above and beyond the usual free weights and machines, which makes for nice variety in my workout. If membership increases much I do hope they will add more machines, as they've said they will. For now, the machine to member ratio is just fine. My one complaint is about the classes. When I signed up, this was something I was really excited about. But a few classes have changed times or dropped off the schedule entirely. Many classes are only offered during the day on weekdays, which is fine for the stay-at-home-mom set but a problem for those of us who work. Options before and after work hours are seriously limited and the online schedule is often WRONG, leading me on more than one occasion to show up for a class that wasn't happening. I hope they add back more classes as membership increases. Other than that, I am very happy at MAC! Hope this feedback helps someone out there trying to decide! read more

This is a nice facility, the equipment is clean and the classes are, for the most part, fairly good. Watch out for rude instructors. I asked one instructor to turn her music down so my kid could hear me without shouting a foot from his head in the kid care. Her response? "It's going to be loud. If you don't like it you're welcome to come back another time." A little staff etiquette would go a long way. read more

OK, I feel weird giving them 3 stars because it's such a "blah" rating, nothing great nothing bad. However in this case there's allot of good and one SIGNIFICANT bad which to many may not even seem that bad. Let me preface this review with saying that I live in LA and am only here for one week. I didn't have to pay for a full membership so this is strictly a review of the place itself not the cost. The place is beautiful, the facilities are clean and the staff is helpful. I love how big and open it feels but I have to say it does seem weird that they sell beer and slushees by the children's soccer area. Maybe so the parents can relax and/ or get tanked while the kids get hopped up on sugar and play soccer with sticky red mustaches? I don't know, I don't have kids. The Zumba class is rad and the teacher is fun. I was probably the only twenty something in there while the rest of the class was roughly 50+ so I wasn't sure what kind of a work out I'd be getting. My expectations were absolutely exceeded and I was drenched in sweat by the end of the class. Those women are troupers! Now for the bad. I used to teach yoga in LA and my guru is a 50 something who has been practicing for years and taught me the safest and most effective ways to teach all levels, all styles and all body types. By no means am I saying this makes me any sort of authority on yoga but I can confidently say the Body Flow class this gym offers is not safe to ALL levels. In theory the combination of yoga and tai chi sounded great, but you can't watch an instructional dvd and call yourself a yoga teacher let alone safely teach a class full of students ranging from young fit yoga enthusiasts to senior citizens without safely modifying the postures. I'm not going to get technical about each thing she did that was dangerous, but lets just say that while I was in a pretzel the poor woman next to me was in no way capable of doing 80% of the postures the way the teacher was instructing us to do them. The modifications she did use were alright but she never offered a block, a blanket or a strap to help anyone OBVIOUSLY struggling. She never even instructed anyone to take a child's pose during the more strenuous postures or transitions. So the woman ( who I might add just so happened to kick but in the Zumba class!) was untimely exhausted and most likely straining parts of her body that she could seriously injure if she continues taking these classes the way they're being taught. I was struggling so desperately with wanting to go and help her with some easy modifications but I felt it wasn't my place and that it would be disrespectful and disruptive. I was so frustrated the entire class, I could hardly get anything out of it at all. At the end of class I just grabbed my things a left while hearing the woman tell the teacher she felt like she couldn't do any of the postures. The teacher just replied with, "Keep coming back! It takes a few times for your muscle memory to kick in. " I wouldn't want my muscles remembering ANYTHING that teacher taught her. read more

I have been using this gym for almost 2 years with absolutely nothing going wrong, as long as you read the contract and know what you're getting into. It's in an old navy hangar, that leaves you with enough room to do whatever your heart's content to. It's a REAL gym so people make noise and have a good time, if you are a beginner, or looking for quiet time, I suggest going to planet fitness or a library. read more

I initially joined to take advantage of the wide open free weight space. A few months into my membership, management decided to redesign the layout, isolating all of the free weights, bench press, etc in one small corner of the huge space. It was now a crowded workout area in which I had to wait often and maneuver around numerous members. Not the experience for which I initially joined. I attempted to cancel and requested any early cancellation fees be waived. They directed me to the contract language and would not acknowledge any responsibility for an unannounced and unwelcome change to the the layout, saying they were entitled to do that whenever they wanted. In my mind, any business who has to direct a dissatisfied customer to the contract to squeeze another $300 out of them isn't deserving of my business. Recommend avoiding this gym. read more

I toured this place and decided to keep my membership at Prorobics down the street. I think that this place is pricey for what they are offering. I was so excited that they were opening, and couldn't wait to join, but didn't for these reasons: I don't think they have enough space/machines. Only a couple of real elliptical trainers, and too few treadmills. I do love the machines they have that can do both stair stepping and elliptical, and they have a lot of those, though. When I voiced my concern over the scarcity of machines I was told that they "had room to grow" in the upstairs platform. That wasn't a good enough answer for me, what's to make sure they buy machines once they already have your money? Also, they have a 25 dollar twice yearly fee for "machine upkeep." I have no idea what this means, and wonder why they couldn't just factor this into the monthly fee? The initiation fee seemed large to me in addition to the fairly pricey monthly fee. It's the amount of money you'd expect to pay at David Barton or some other high end gym. The pros: Their kids club looks great. It's a clean room, and only 3 bucks an hour. The locker room is beautiful and clean/new, but I worried about the space being too small. Parking is super easy, view is great. In the end, if you can afford it, this is a great, small, community club. For someone that doesn't have a lot of money, it wasn't worth it. read more

I used to love the MAC. I joined the summer that they opened. At that time, I was told that childcare while you worked out would be free. This quickly changed after I joined, though I did not care much. I did not use this service; however, I was annoyed that they change was made without notification to members. Fees, fees, and more fees. In addition to your membership fee, there are regular equipment fees that are charged. When I first joined, these fees did not exist. And I was given no notification when they were added. But I enjoyed the facility, so I put up with it. With a busy schedule, I have not had time to use the gym, and so want to cancel my membership. I have called twice to so this. The first time I called, I was told I can done over the phone, but that it is easier to do in person. I agreed. That was 3 months ago. I called again and was told that I have to come in in-person to cancel my account. They will only do it over the phone for "medical reasons". Upon asking why, I was told it is their policy as they have parts of the form they need to fill out too. I then asked if they could fax or email the form so that I could fill out my portion ahead of time. Again, I was told it is against policy to do this. I was considering rejoining when my schedule allowed, but I will not. read more

We were huge advocates of the MAC when it first opened. It appeared to perfectly fit the growing market of families in NE Seattle. This means childcare is a huge variable when deciding what gym to join. When we visited the gym we were told that childcare was free and the children could use the inflatables. But this is not the case. Unlike Em S. who who blogged earlier that kids "can either be in the kids' area of the gym or if they'd prefer to go over to the inflatables (just like Pump it Up)", we have found on more than one occasion that our school aged children were not allowed to play in the inflatables because the children who arrived earlier to the playroom didn't want to. With only one child care person on site, she couldn't be in two places at the same time. So I was asked to pay $3/hour for my children to watch videos. This is not why I'd join a gym and if this is the type of childcare I get then Meikos and ProRobics are much cheaper. Our other option was to pay a higher price to arena sports for use of the inflatables when this happens. There are no guarantees. When I mentioned this issue to management, I was treated very rudely (and that's putting it mildly). My enthusiasm to support a local business was crushed. Although the gym appears "family friendly" with its partnership with Arena sports, don't let that fool you. You could almost double your monthly fees if you have 2 kids with you when you go to the gym more than 3xweek. I think they are missing the boat by not reaching an untapped market by providing a place where parents and kids can play together. If me and my family can't have fun together, at the same time, then I'll work out on my own (at a cheaper gym) or not join a gym at all. My guess is that's why the gym is often empty. read more

The gym is nice, clean, not crowded, plenty of parking and generally friendly. Plenty of options for every work out style. My wife and I went there somewhat regularly and have nothing bad to say about the work out experience. It was convenient to our home and just what we needed. However, a few months after my wife delivered our first child and realized working out was not an option she asked to put her account on hold. They did so, but charged $10.95 to "keep the account active" so you don't have to re-up. Sounds fair enough, they explained that. What they didn't explain was that after four months it will go back into active status and you'll be charged the $75/month fee. And during that four months, there's a twice yearly equipment fee of $25 that you'll also get charged. While trying to get resolution on the issue, we find out that there's actually a medical leave option that the front desk did not explain that does not charge a monthly fee. When they were asked to help with some of these fees, they refused. Unfortunately, we will not be going back. We appreciate what they've brought to Magnuson park, but the unwillingness to refund what turned out to be a months worth of dues for two made us think twice before returning. read more

I have had a great experience at magnuson athletic club. I took advantage of a great special for their annual membership which made it much cheaper than many other gyms in the area. The facility is beautiful. It has new machines, great view, clean spacious locker area and showers. The staff is pleasant and helpful- they told me which classes to try first and what to move up to... I took the KUT class- which was hard- people in this class are in super shape- a little intimidating but inspirational too. I worked with William when signing up who was very accommodating and friendly. The whole front staff is courteous and helpful. The fact that I can choose to have a beer after a workout and/or watch my girls play soccer is just a bonus! read more

Facility is great - equipment is up to date, clean, low membership so never over crowded, some of the staff on the floor were very friendly. But it doesn't make up for very poor membership experience and awful management. Couple examples: 1. After enrollment I was overcharged on my monthly dues for consecutive months. Sent an email (encouraged to do so in fact) which was never respnded to, nor acknowledged that it was ever received. Finally called and it was adjusted appropriately. I only mention this because I subsequently had the need to email several other times for servicing needs, none of which were acknowledged or returned. Rather odd when you publish your email address on your site and enourage members to interact with you, particularly for servicing needs. 2. Somewhere around month 5 of membership I got a charge mid-billing cycle for $35 bucks. I called (after email futility) and when I explained I had an odd charge the person asked "oh was it for $35", which it was, she then said "yeah that's an equipment charge. It was in your membership contract. Is that ok?" Uh, can I say no? Clearly from this response it was a common call they were getting from members, and since she was asking if it was ok, I'm guessing if you're the type of member that makes a big enough stink they will waive it, which I didn't. If it's in the contract so be it, but it was never pointed out, and I'm guessing other members felt the same way. And - why not bake this "equipment charge" into the monthly membership dues for all members, like every other gym? 3. I recently moved out of the area and canceled my membership. The MANAGER I spoke to was less than friendly. I explained my situation and that I liked the gym but it was too far away. To which he said "well your billing cycle is tomorrow so you will be charged for the next month. you need to give us 30 days notice. it's in your contract." Awesome, nice lead. Didn't realize my gym was as strict as renting a house when it comes to leaving - to which he repeated, "it's in your contract". I should add that the salesperson upon joining the gym expicitly told me it was "no problem" if I had to cancel due to moving out of the area - you usually have to provide us with documentation but we're really flexible, just let us know and we'll end the contract. No mention of 30 days notice. You might think I'm just complaining because I didn't read my contract well enough. You'd be right. But I've belonged to many gyms in my day, and none of them have had the stipulations listed above...and even if they did, I've never had the kind of poor membership and management handling I experienced here. Hopefully this helps someone who does decide to join to avoid the pitfalls I experienced. Good luck. read more

Nice gym and great equipment but the music is too loud. Impossible to watch the TV or watch movies or listen to podcasts because the music is so loud it bleeds through. People do ask for the music to be turned down but inevitably it creeps up in volume and its intolerable again. read more

I absolutely love working out at MAC! The equipment is awesome because its so new and functional. There is a lot of space to move around here and work out in many difference parts of the club including an upstairs area that overlooks the Lake. I have been working out with a PT named Dustin and so far he is one of the best I have ever come across. He seems to really pay attention to your needs and ability on that particular work out day. So if I'm struggling, he pushes me only so much and when I'm not he pushes me more which I really appreciate and I have been able to loose weight following his training routine. I highly recommend Magnuson Athletic Club. read more

This review is for the Bouncy Houses. PROS: They offer longer hours than other bouncy locations, multiple times per day. Fairly cheap at $9 for one child. They have a place to put your stuff. CONS: No one but the parents monitor the children inside the bouncy houses. I didn't see one workers checking on anything during the hour we where there, the houses clearly say on the front not to allow children in unless there is an attendant present so they are definitely lacking there. Good thing we watch our child like hawks. Most of the houses are extremely run down, having a 4 year old we're basically forced to go into the houses with our child. I refused to let my child go back into one of them because it barely had air in it and there where 2 older boys fighting inside, they where kicking and hitting each other and blocking kids from going past until I came along and told them to take their fighting outside. The stairs in that particular house where so worn down that I had to lift my 4 year old up to the top, at some points in that house my foot was touching the ground (I'm not chunky either, 120 lbs.). A real feeling of panic set in half way through the house. It's basically an all ages place, 4 year olds mixing with 10 year olds isn't fun for either of them. The younger kids hold up the older kids which leads to a lot of pushing or kids trampling each other to get by. Many of the parents of the older children sit back and chit chat while their kids are completely out of control, fighting each other, pushing, playing games inside the houses to the point where they won't let other kids pass by them and saying nasty things to each other. They offer alcohol. This probably leads to the lack of parenting. Don't get me wrong, I like to enjoy a cold one but NOT when I'm supposed to be a parent. We didn't like the movie theaterish snack display at the front desk, filled with some of the worst snacks available our child immediately wanted candy and a neon colored slushy. I won't be going back for the Bouncy Houses, the other areas looked very nice. There where kids playing soccer games and they have a large selection of fitness equipment in a huge building. Jump Planet in Bothell is definitely a safer place for younger children to bounce and enjoy themselves without getting brain damage from the other kids, they offer play times for age groups which is 10 times better than just letting everyone in. I'm very surprised that they allow this crap show to happen everyday, it's just a matter of time before the houses collapse or a child gets seriously hurt. Use caution if you plan on taking children under the age of 6, you'll want to monitor them the whole time or even better go to Jump Planet. I considered soccer lessons for our child at this location but after the bouncy experience my confidence in their classes and overall leadership skills dropped. read more

MAC has been the perfect place to work out. While all of the pricing details to date are true - the areas of the gym that I love is the location (on my way into town), the views, the diversity of the equipment, the members are a higher clientelle, and the staff is very responsive. So I finally got down to MAC. Looking for a new space to workout on the point, and I found it! Really great facilities, amazing location on the lake, and lots of choices for class that don't include Les Mills coma-inducing predictability. The KUT class fired me up! Check it out. read more
