Slate crossfit member here. I'm about half a year into this new work out routine. I enjoy the scaled work outs, the comraderie of the members and instructors, and as a nube, i appreciate the special tips and attention to form before heavy lifting. Heavy is nice, but it is not my goal. I just want to be healthy and have a dedicated routine. Whit, John, Bill, and other coaches have been tremendously supportive and nurturing. I leave the work out knowing it was the toughest thing i accomplished all day. The rest is cake. But no, don't go and eat cake. I was visiting the area for a week and couldn't stand the thought of missing my workouts. Fortunately Slate was less than half a mile from where I was staying and they have a drop-in rate that rivals all the other boxes in the area. Walking in I was impressed with their huge, well designed facility. Jared and all of the other gym members were incredibly welcoming. While they have a slightly different routine than I'm used to, it was easy to get into the groove and fit in. Jared is a fantastic coach, he really focuses on each individual and provides constructive feedback. I definitely suggest checking them out. Let's start this review with a little life workout background of myself. I was the guy who went in, lifted heavy with low reps because that's what I was told to do to build "BIG MUSCLES". So I stayed that course through my 20's then the 30's came and life. The gym took a back seat! I still would flirt with working out here and there but those attempts were in short bursts. Then the 40's started and the gym stopped. At 43 I was overweight, not happy with the way I felt or looked. So I decided I needed to go back to the gym. What a wrong move that was, headphones in zoned out with no motivating goals, and slowly lost the drive to go. I was talking about the struggle to a friend and he mentioned Crossfit. My immediate response was "I've seen those guys on TV, there's no way I could do that". On top of that I figured I'd be completely judged for being this out of shape guy walking into this hardcore workout zone! I was so far from wrong. I walked in to Slate Crossfit and immediately felt welcomed and by that I mean welcomed, not give me your money welcomed. Unfortunately how I felt at some other places. I went through their elements class, which basically gives you a taste and some technical aspects. Then days later showed up to my first class and I most say I was a little nervous. Immediately people were introducing themselves and actually asking questions to get to know me. It was like the we're excited I decide to get in shape. I've been hooked every sense. The coaching staff at Slate is amazing, professional, and have encouragement coming out of their ears. The facility is clean, well equipped, and what you'd expect out of place where you're going to change your life. Did I mention dog friendly! The thing I enjoy the most is the other members. No matter your abilities they all cheer you on. High fives and knuckle bumps run rampant in that place. Slate is full of all walks of life doctors, financial advisors, pilots, students, teachers, construction workers, you name it we all workout together and cheer each other on. Joining Slate has changed my life drastically, beyond measure. I was a Slater for a little over two years. I would have never left my comfortable home had it not been for my move a bit more north. I've experienced many emotions at Slate but never have I regretted going after my workout was done. This place and the people will leave you feeling like you belonged there all along. Slate CrossFit has been awesome so far. Jared (owner and coach) is really approachable and explains movements in relation to how you might use your body on a daily basis. Concepts are easy to grasp and one has hope of perfecting proper form to prevent injuries. The coaches do a good job of pushing you to work as hard as you can while also scaling movements for newbies. Most of all, I appreciate that Slate CrossFit is a positive place that's about showing up, giving 100%, and getting stronger and more comfortable in your body. There is no guilt if you miss a session, like to drink beer, or could stand to lose a few pounds... The coaches are just really happy when you show your face in the gym. Jared told me that the workouts don't get easier but that you get better and stronger... I've found that to be really true. The workouts create a sense of solidarity within each class because they are challenging for everyone regardless of height, weight, physical fitness, and prior experience. The gym has been a great community of people who are friendly, informative, and genuinely excited to see me set personal records. Lastly, Slate CrossFit is professional in its web presence, blog postings, and sharing of daily workouts while keeping logistical bullsh*t to a minimum. That is much appreciated. This is the first time I had ever tried CrossFit. I decided to sign up with my husband since it's so close to our house but thought this would probably be too hard so I would drop out in time..think again! I loved it here!! The staff & trainers are the best, they have been so patient helping us with our form & making sure we don't get injured but pushing us. The place is also huge which is super nice. Look. This isn't going to be easy. But it's going to be worth it. During the workout you may think you can't do any more, but you will. When you get to your last rep, you will know you went all out, and you'll be proud, and happy, and sweaty, and you'll get a well deserved high five. The coaches at Slate are fantastic. I've worked with 3 of them, and they all care very much about making sure you're doing the movement properly, as well as getting your best workout. When I first walked in the door I was intimidated and scared, That lasted about 2 minutes. The coaches and members here are extremely supportive and really care about everyone who walks through the doors. Jared especially is a body mechanics geek, and I mean that as a compliment and in the best way possible. I highly recommend Slate. I've worked out with several trainers, and I believe Jared and his staff are the best I've encountered. I am looking forward to my workouts paying great dividends in my day to day strength, as well as my other activities (hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, cycling and running). read more

It took me a long time to gather the courage to join a crossfit gym, and I feel very fortunate that I chose Slate. I knew next to nothing about the movements or weightlifting, yet at every turn I was met with patience and functional knowledge from all of the coaches there. Because of my schedule, I got to know Coach Jared best, and always looked forward to going to one of his classes. All the coaches there are fantastic and have their own unique styles! I must say that before I joined Slate, I'd always kinda dreaded working out, but I very quickly caught the fever and was going three times a week and was feeling much some significant results: stronger, more toned and much more energy to get through my long days. Though my unpredictable schedule didn't permit participation, I did feel a strong sense of community there - friendly competition, encouragement and support. No one was pressured or belittled on account of their fitness status- the workouts can be scaled so I always felt challenged. I am currently taking a break to heal a non-Crossfit related condition, but this place has left a strong impression on me. Even during my explanation of this shift to Jared, I was met with kindness and understanding. I'll definitely be back once I'm better. This is the third CrossFit gym I've been a part of, and so far my favorite. At my first CrossFit gym, I couldn't hold a three minute conversation with the main coach because he would get distracted so easily. He really fit the "muscle-guy" stereotype, and only focused on the other super ripped guys in the gym. The second gym felt really impersonal and the coaches were more focused on increasing weight than having good form, so I was led to believe I could lift a lot and all this time I've been close to throwing out my back or blowing out my knees. I've been at Slate CrossFit for a week, and I'm getting plenty of coaching and feedback from all the coaches. Jared, Derek and Christian definitely care and respect all of the members. (Previous coaches just memorized my face and name.) It's also a lot bigger than the other gyms I've been to, which seems more professional to me because there's actually room for a large class. Slate crossfit member here giving a shout out to one of the best in the crossfit community. I started early with the movement in 2008 (as a burned out triathlete), in New York and have since experienced so many gyms - from New Hampshire to San Diego, California and now up here in Seattle. Slate is one of the best I've been to. If you visit enough gyms you realize the vast difference in coaching - I've quit gyms in the past for their poor attention to my movement patterns while lifting and inability to cue in ways that provide lightbulb moments for me. Slate is a gym full of pro coaches - they know what they are doing and they are awesome. I came in after a recent leg break and without a consistent workout routine in 2 years. I felt defeated. The coaches took the time to teach me all the movements and provided great modifications to accommodate my broken leg. I have been to several Crossfit boxes (gyms) in Seattle and LA and this is the nicest. Granted the facility is new, but clearly a lot of thought was put into it. There is plenty of space, and the equipment is top notch. Jarod (the head coach) is also a stand up guy; super friendly and certainly the most knowledgeable coach I have worked with. A lot of coaches fail to notice subtle problems and some simply don't get engaged, Jarod is not like this. As I said before, the gym is new, so some things have room for improvement, but I would expect this from any new business. All in all it's a great place to WOD and the folks are nice too. read more

This is an update on an earlier review. I still really like the gym. It is the best gym I have been a part of. The coaches are great and each have different tips and advice to help you reach your goals and potential. Everyone goes to the gym to laugh and work hard. Half of each class is spent laughing. The movements also have multiple skill levels to help you improve and stay safe. I recommend that anyone who wants to learn about exercise or meet new people in a positive setting to come to Slate Crossfit. read more

Love this place (and that's coming from a not so athletically inclined person). I went through the intro session which was awesome. Its a small class size and Jared, the coach, really focuses on form for all the essential movements. The regular classes are obviously more intense but there's still a lot of focus on correct movements. The gym is huge, which means there's room for things like indoor wind sprints when the weather is bad. It's also really clean and there's a ton of equipment. Everyone is welcoming and encouraging.
