I like Apple Pie, Berry Pie, and Rhubarb Pie, but I've never had Mag Pie. However, I've been to the Magpie, and it's awesome. The Magpie is a pretty excellent Pub in Rochester where you can get expensive drinks and some mid price drinks and they have a pretty cool atmosphere. It tends to be frequented by hipsters more than anything but you probably knew that already considering the location. You'll also find a lot of college students in here despite the fact that a lot of them are under 21 LOL. You know how that goes. read more

I tried to go here with friends and was denied entry for wearing a white tank top. It was a hot summer night, and my outfit was perfectly appropriate--I've worn it to plenty of other bars without issue. When I asked the security guard why it wasn't allowed, he said, "it's just the owner's rules" and claimed that every bar on Park Ave enforces the same dress code (spoiler alert - they don't!). I asked if these rules were posted anywhere, and they weren't--nor do they appear on the bar's website or social media. If a dress code is going to be enforced, it should be made clear. Otherwise, it feels like arbitrary and potentially discriminatory gatekeeping. I also noticed women inside wearing more revealing outfits, and the guard said the owner lets females wear whatever they want. Yikes. Overall, I don't recommend this place, even though the security team was polite. The owner's practices seem questionable, and when I asked to speak to him, he wasn't available. read more

2.5 Not sure why I keep finding myself in the acquaintance of those who suggest going here. Feels like a very "eh" bar to me. Usually packed with more guys than girls... And it does get packed which isn't very comfortable as the aisles are (or actually singular.. Aisle) narrow. Typically a preppy crowd. Dark wood is pretty but it makes it feel... well, dark inside. Awful experience and I'll never go back. Two friends and I were outside at a table while the bar was packed inside (oh yeah, they don't even pretend to follow distancing or capacity laws). The bouncer decided to latch onto us for some reason and told us we need to finish our drinks and close our tab. OK, whatever. I go in to try and pay, stand at the packed bar for five minutes without being acknowledged, and give up to head back outside. Finish my drink, go back in to pay, and when I come back out, my friends said the bouncer had returned and sworn at them that it was time to f-ing leave. While the bar inside was still packed! I was very upset and asked why he was being so rude to my party while the inside was still packed. He told me, with his mask pulled down below his chin, that the bar could be fined if they don't follow regulations so people needed to leave. What an absolute joke! I love Magpie on Sundays, especially during football season. It's a great crowd, relaxed atmosphere, attentive and down to earth bartenders, solid food menu, multiple televisions, darts in the back, pretty big beer selection, hooks under the bar for your purse and coat, what more could you want? Weekend nights, get here early as it gets packed out and it's nearly impossible to come in if you have a group larger than 10 as my friends and I have learned the hard way. A good place to visit during off-peak hours. Lunchtime, maybe a Mon or Tues night in the winter. The interior is beautiful with lots of dark wood and furnishings made in Ireland and imported directly. The Guinness is alright. And the food is good, especially the sandwiches. The problem becomes the patrons and at times the staff during peak hours. The Magpie is a decent pub right in the heart of the Park Ave action. The best aspect of this place is the outside seating (in warm weather) which is great for people watching. They have a good selection of beers and a few TVs for watching sports. They do serve food but the few times I have been here I have never ordered anything except for beers. read more

I used to live nearby, so when MagPie opened I was excited. Unfortunately, my opinion quickly went downhill. After many many visits (location couldn't be beat) I have to say I'd rather stay away. This bar is literally bringing the East-End crowd down to cozy, elegant (for rochacha) Park Ave. The atmosphere inside can quickly become frat party-ish, especially with the smell of spilt beer. Good looking bar and decor (lots of dark wood), and some of the best seating on Park Ave. The alleyway seating area is cool, but it becomes awful if others are smoking (and you are not). The draft beer selection is "meh". I'm not a fan of the bar's patrons as the night progresses (East-End type of crowd), but I do think it's a good place to have a pint in the late afternoon. I've never eaten here so I can't speak on that. The vibe is a little bit college-y as with most bars on Park Ave. - not necessarily a bad thing. They have a decent selection of beers on tap - your typical draft selections (Blue Moon, Blue/Bud Light, Abita Purple Haze, among others). Sometimes service can be a bit slow because they mainly have 1 bartender on at a time. It's typically busy at night and on Sundays-which is nice if you're looking for a good day-drinking spot for a couple of friends. The best place to watch a soccer gave in the entire city. As a huge arsenal fan who refuses to pay for cable this is ny go to location to catch all the games. It helps that on game days there are always fellow arsenal supporters there as well as some of the enemy to root against. Solid bar on park ave. It's really tiny so be warned. Have standard bar fried food. Steak fries are decent. They typically show soccer games here which brings in a niche clientele. Agree though with some of the other reviewers that the bartenders can sometimes not be friendly or turn on soccer channels. This bar will most likely have a bit mature crowd compared to dragonfly but not always. Magpie is a solid pub in the Park Ave area. It's a little bit more "down to earth" than some of its neighbors. They are willing to play different sporting events if you ask. Not my favorite bar in the neighborhood, but decent. I usually find myself here when nothing else is open (because Magpie always is!). I must agree with my fellow Yelpers that the space can feel tight and narrow. Sometimes I feel like a giantess sitting by the cramped bar, but that's probably because I'm usually wolfing down a heaping order of mozzarella sticks (which are, admittedly, delicious). Service varies. Some of the bartenders are really personable and cool, others not so much. The last time I was there a bar back was coughing uncontrollably and complaining about how she was miserably sick. Yikes... Its saving grace? Magpie has pickle backs! This is one of the best unknown places in the city. Everything is made from scratch. They serve quite possibly the world best sandwich, the Cajun chicken sandwich (or pork or tuna if you prefer). Served on thick sliced Vienna bread with juicy tender sliced chicken cooked in a homemade Cajun seasoning. A garlic cream sauce covers the bread and the sandwich is finished with fresh shredded lettuce. Other highlights include the Hot Turkey sandwich and grilled sudried tomato pesto eggplant sandwich. Sat and Sunday breakfast is served and I might suggest the corned beef hash. Give a little extra time for your food to be prepared as the owner cooks everything to perfection. Went here on a hot Sunday afternoon and all the windows were open. Sat in front of the window to get a breeze and a guy came up and just started shutting the windows on us- knocking drinks over and drinks on phones. He went around the table, moved the table over and knocked another drink and had no remorse. Didn't say who he was or what he was doing. We had to go get our own towels and clean up his mess. I went to Magpie this week, and I was once again disappointed. Why? Because every time I go in there the bartenders are downright rude. They throw your license back at you, and make it seem like you are doing them the biggest inconvenience by ordering a drink. They have a $10 minimum on cards (which isn't a big deal, just good to know). One time I went there with a friend and when she paid for her drink, the bartender didn't give her change back and took it as a tip. She was going to tip him anyway, but that's a bold move. They have outdoor seating but it is very limited, and a lot of times there are obnoxious preps and dorito girls inside. They close the outdoor seating at 10:45pm as well. A couple of nights ago I made the mistake of visiting this bar. I am a middle age professional, living in the Park Ave area. As I walked in I was greeted by several very nice patrons at the bar, and proceeded to enjoy my beer striking up casual conversation. This would have been a perfect night if it wasn't for the colossal ass behind the bar ( Anthony ). This young man was extremely rude, ruined my night and I will NEVER return to this bar ever again...and neither will any of my friends. F U Anthony! read more

Recently returned to pretty much the only bars I frequent(ed?)on Park Ave only to be very disappointed. The regular friendly bartender was replaced by the owners ,not so friendly, son. When I inquired about the usual bartender, he said 'am I not pretty enough for you?'....Really?!? The whole vibe if the place was brought way down, not to mention, it was unusually quiet...hmmm? The topping on the cake was him audibly expressing his displeasure with a tip he had just received. Is this really 'acceptable' customer service from the owners son, none the less. I realized yesterday after a brief stint at the Bridal Show being held at the convention center that there are not many drinking establishments open Sunday afternoons between lunch and dinner. Magpie came to the rescue as I stood on Park Ave at 3 pm, freezing my butt off, wondering where I could get a cocktail with a couple of girlfriends. The bar was busy, but we had no trouble getting served. I have gone to this bar several times and have had a good time. Well this past time ruined it for not only me but everyone I was with and know! So let me just tell you that I am a 24 year old Female.. I walk into the bar and the bouncer is checking ID's which is fine, I hand him mine he scans it and it goes through saying I'm okay to come in, then the bouncer proceeded to tell me that it wasn't me and I was using a fake ID. In my ID I have blonde hair and I have brown hair now, but IM A FEMALE we change our hair color more than we change our clothes!!! Not to mention if he just put aside the hair color I LOOK LIKE ME oh wait BECAUSE IT WAS ME! He asked me for additional forms of ID and I gladly gave him every single credit card, health cards, etc. in my wallet and he STILL would not allow me to come in even though it was me. My boyfriend lived across the street from Magpie for about a year and it was in that time that I really came to appreciate this little Park Ave pub. I'm inclined to say that in some cases with the crowd, Magpie can seem a bit like Murphy's Law Lite but by no means does that diminish the appeal. As far as bar foods in Rochester goes, Magpie does a stellar job. I will go so far as to say that they have the best medium wing sauce in the city and the menu pricing is pretty approachable. I don't typically delve beyond a pint of middle-of-the-road beer or a well drink and I don't go to Magpie to try to be a spirit snob (I think people associate small pubs with having phenomenal selections of obscure beers and liquors which may not always be the case). As far as I'm concerned, Magpie does the job in terms of taking the edge off on a thursday night without the mentally taxing commitment of a trek to the east end. My only complaint is that it can get a bit cold in the winter inside since they don't have a foyer and can't seem to keep the heat in. I'm not a particular fan of having to wear a coat indoors. read more

Nice place, great location, outdoor seating, very popular place when it is nice out, but this is probably one of the worst places to be at when it's busy. I think the actual bar takes up about half the space indoors. Usually only one bartender working as well and they really bust their ass trying to get to everyone as quickly as possible. Right next to Blu Wolf and across the street from Jines. Dragonfly and Public House are down the street if you want more room to stand. read more
