We never go to Maguro anymore because the service is terrible. Take out is never ready when they say it will be and dine in is even worse. We waited 1.5 hours to get our sushi on several occasions. If you don't want to spend hours waiting for food, choose another option. They don't have the staff to be successful. The restaurant itself has become storage for the family and feels very cluttered. we haven't eaten at Maguro House in a long time and decided to try it again as a takeout on a weeknight. everything that we ordered was really good especially the fresh spring rolls, the tempura tofu, The rainbow roll, spicy tuna hand roll, and pork fried rice! everything was fresh and delicious and we are kicking ourselves for not eating here more often. Looking for a great sushi place and sadly still looking. There were two tables with patrons in a mostly empty restaurant which should have given us the first clue but we wanted to give it a shot. Even with just two tables the service was slow. Getting drinks and food was slow. The sushi itself was fairly bland. I had a salmon avocado roll and a spicy tuna roll. The salmon was a very light color and didn't have a strong flavor; same with the spicy tuna. The worst part was my table mate ordered an eel bowl and it didn't come out with my food. After twenty minutes of waiting I had to get up and find the server to ask where his food was. Get this... Sangria and aloe juice were just two of MANY drink options, from Asian classics like Scorpion bowls to an original iced Calpico. I ordered spicy Japanese ramen with rice noodles, excited to find a place that does real ramen! The sushi selection is endless, with many dishes I've never seen before. My boyfriend ordered the Scorpion roll and we both wanted to try the Kaya Maki, which is lobster salad with Three types of roe. Everything tastes fresh and perfectly cooked. My college friends and I have been coming here since 2015. Through out the years we felt the food has been very good and consistent. We first heard of this restaurant back when we were all students at Dean College nearby. Due to most of us still living in towns by Franklin we always make it a mission to visit. Throughout the years, we feel that this place has never changed. The food, waitstaff and atmosphere feels at home to all of us. Recently, my friend and I have had the privilege of coming back week after week, and having the wait staff recognize us and welcome us back into the place. Food is just OK. However, the portion is pretty small. For about 6 dollars, you can get a salad for Half people's portion. And, i really think their staff need more training. the delivery takes sooooo long. Regular drive from their restaurant to my house is about 15 mins. They took more than 80 mins to do the delivery....it turned out it was not driver's problem. The guy who answered the phone made a mistake about our address, and the driver asked him to call back and check, which he refused to do so, he said my husband had "language problem"...yea, maybe, we are Asian Americans, anyway, it's not our first time to call for a food delivery, no one ever said that, and no one ever made that stupid mistake. Wife picked up some Valentine's Day dinner takeout from Maguro. No place to park, plus the snow piles made it difficult for her to walk on the sidewalk. City should fine these vendors for not clearing their sidewalks. Anyway, ordered seaweed salad; sushi; udon noodles; chicken katsu - for two adults and two children. Salad was good, but a very small order. Udon noodles with chicken was tasty. Chicken katsu had a nice sauce on it and the piece was nicely cut up. Came with some white rice, a small bowl of miso soup. Sushi was good - two california rolls, soft shell crab roll, spicy yellowtail and a tuna roll. All the rolls seemed fresh and tasty, but the wasabi and ginger was barely visible for five (5) rolls, plus 3-4 packages of soy sauce. Overall, a nice meal, though Maguro should focus on the finishing touches to make the order worth $80 - like the seaweed salad at other places include a lemon slice for flavor; the sushi presented with some greens around it; and the chicken katsu with some greens, or maybe some broccoli, A little presentation, even if sitting in plastic takeout containers, would not cost them that much more, but win some regular customers. read more

This is fine, I understand that it's a small business and that things may take longer. Everyone else gets their orders, most who ordered the exact thing as us. An hour and half later my partner goes up and asks about the status of our food. They forgot. Ive worked in the food industry and i'd like to think i'm pretty patient and understanding, but this was absolutely ridiculous. My fiance and I were very excited to try this place out. He made a reservation for Valentine's Day, just incase. When we arrived and mentioned the reservation, they had no idea what he was talking about. Took about 5 minutes to get seated in which they pointed to where we could sit. Yes pointed. We sat for 10 minutes, no one stopped by our table. My fiancé got up to ask for menu's. We never got them. As this was going on, the table next to us was telling us that it took an hour for them to just get water and place settings, and to get out while we can. That couple was waiting for their food for a long time too. No one ever came by to greet us, nor give us a menu. We walked up and left. It's disappointing since we were excited to try it out. We got take out from here the other night. They were easy to order with on the phone, double checking after each roll to make sure the order was correct. Spicy Tuna- Uses whole pieces of tuna instead of it being ground up. Could get the tuna taste, but not fishy tasting. It was spicy but not overbearing Boston Roll-Lots of avocado, but still okay Crazy Maki- the tempura shrimp was nicely fried, but not too bready Caterpillar Roll- could definitely taste the eel and that sweetness more than the spicy mayo. At the end of the meal I asked my boyfriend what his favorites were and he said the Spicy Tuna and the Boston. And my two were the opposite, the Crazy and the Caterpillar. Reasonable prices and everything is fresh. Their salmon nigiri is delicious! I don't understand the bad reviews for this place at all. I've only had their sushi, but it's so much better than all the other sushi joints in the area. I've been going to here almost weekly for the past six months. Totally worth it! As others have mentioned...service is decent at best. I order takeout every weekend and I think they've screwed up the exact same thing I get every time more than 50% of the time. Holy cow, much better than my first visit!! Had an expensive lobster maki which was stupendous, but also really loved the miso soup, avocado roll, and tempura vegetables. Very mixed feelings and experiences for this one. I was there 2 weeks after they opened and, to my dismay, they didn't serve any beer yet (which is a must-have with sushi for me). Still, I was happy to have a good sushi anywhere within 15 minutes from home and really wanted to like it. The venue is new, but doesn't have any special ambiance, looks a little too diner-like. Sushi was simply bad (too warm, not fresh, kitchen smelled like old fish) and the waitress didn't know what daikon radish is (because I asked for more, since the tempura sauce barely had any in it). The second time I went back because a friend of mine thought it is excellent (and he has been to Japan more often than me). Sushi was now much better for a "good" rating, but service still sucked bad. The waitress took our order without taking notes and after the 3rd item I ordered, she excused herself to get a notebook, then I had to repeat myself 3 times before she got what I wanted (I don't mumble). She specifically asked if I wanted nigiri sushi or sashimi. I confirmed nigiri sushi just to receive sashimi from the chef! The older lady just stands there at the counter, instead of serving herself and only gets active in emergencies. My colleague insists that the lunch deals are good and reasonably priced, but with having another and much better sushi nearby (Tenchi in Bellingham), I rather go there for dinner. 3 stars for being a rare sushi place in these towns. read more

The food was excellent but the service was VERY slow. Also, they do not have a bar so if you're looking for saki with your sushi, you're out of luck. My husband and I got there at 5:30pm on Saturday for an early dinner hoping to "beat the rush". There were only about a dozen of other diners in the restaurant when we got there and honestly there weren't many more than that when we left at 7:00pm. (The restaurant is a bit small inside, but there were several open tables.) We started with edamame and gyoza (dumplings) which were very good. For our dinner we had the "Yummy Roll" (shrimp tempura, fried sweet potato, bonito flakes & spicy mayo), the "Mexican Roll" (Tuna, tempura flakes & crushed chili pepper), Negihama maki and a Rainbow roll. They were all very good but the Mexican Roll was our favorite - the crunchy tempura flakes with tuna...mmmm... Went for first time tonight with my son, thought we would try it to compare against Ichico Ichie also in Franklin as well as Sake Bom and Tenchi Sushi in Bellingham. Pretty disappointed. Restaurant seemed quiet to point of being dead - it was perhaps 25% full - and we were seated in a darkened area with the overhead lights turned off. I mentioned this to another table seated in the same place who was actually using their phones flashlight app to read the menu! Thankfully someone apparently overheard us and turned the lights on. Really? Half the place's lights are off at 6PM on a Saturday? Ordered Edamame and Kimchi for apps. Edemame was fine, came out in 5 minutes. Kimchi was OK, but took 15 minutes after the Edemame to come out and I had to ask what had happened with it .. why??? Kimchi is fermented cabbage and is cold - it has no preparation that I'm aware of. Server was nice but I think was a local Dean college student. She didn't know any of the menu, seemed awkward. Was this a problem? Yes. We ordered sashimi by name (Maguro, Unagi) and she didn't understand any of it, so we had to follow with the English description and even point out the items on the menu. My son asked for Tobikko and even said "Flying Fish Roe", but he got (the weirdest looking thing) "Egg Omelet Sushi" which is actually the "Tamago". Again, on a Saturday night at prime time, your servers should actually be familiar with the food they are serving. We had a couple of rolls (Alligator, Boston roll) and several Nigiri - Maguro, Sake, Unagi plus a Tako (Octopus) and Hokkigai (Surf Clam). They were all OK, but none really good. I would suggest that the freshness and quality of the ingredients wasn't what possibly could have been. At the end of the meal my son and I looked at each other and discussed if we enjoyed the meal, and agreed we really didn't. Nothing was horrible, but not really good either, and I've found that Sushi that isn't really good is kind of a poor dining experience. read more

It pains me to have to do this. I have eaten at Maguro before. The food is always good and it's the only place near me that I know of to purchase green tea ice cream. Yesterday I was walking home, hoping for a quiet spot to eat amidst the ongoing Harvest Festival. I didn't feel that well and was relieved that Maguro was mostly empty and open. My food was good, served in a timely manner. I still didn't feel well but I wasn't hungry anymore. I got up with my check to pay (the cashier was the same waitress who served me) for my meal as well as a carton of ice cream. Like I've mentioned twice before, I wasn't feeling well and forgot to add a tip. I handed my check and card to the waitress. Immediately she (And this is rude no matter how you look at it) pointed out the lack of a tip, handing me the check back, pointing at the line. Um, excuse me? I paused for a minute, trying to scramble my head together (Even though I shouldn't have had to) and whilst I'm trying to mentally calculate the tip as well as her rudeness towards me, she asks if I have cash. I, politely, asked her to give me a minute. I just wanted to leave. I don't remember what number I added to the total via my card.
