We've been meaning to check this place out for a while now. Finally pulled the trigger on a lazy Sunday afternoon around 2 o'clock and decided to order online. All I can say is, I wish we would've tried it sooner. The portions were large, the ingredients were fresh and the sauce selection and quality were excellent. We ordered a make your own bowl for my wife with 4x spicey salmon over white rice with her favorite fixin's and I got the Spicy Sea Wrap and Ahi Tina Poke snack. All delicious! I definitely recommend adding a side of the cucumber wasabi aioli to your order as well because it's out of this world delicious. You could dip some cardboard in it and make it enjoyable. All in all an excellent local spot with top notch customer service and incredible food. We're going back for lunch next week. read more

Hubby and I came in on a Tuesday evening around 5pm. They were completely empty. The gentleman and lady at the front were welcoming enough. They were also super patient with us as this was our first time. I actually won a gift card giveaway on Instagram so I finally got to use it. Thank You. I opted for the shrimp poke bowl with lots of sauce and toppings atop greens. Hubby ordered a spicy tuna bowl also with lots of sauces and toppings. I was happy to see a list of options and toppings on the glass because everything was covered so I wasn't able to see what they had available. I liked how they have specialty drinks; I ordered the mahalo colada and hubby ordered the dragonfruit juice. Their ice machine was out of order but the drinks were cold so we got them anyway. Atmosphere was alright, it was clean and spacious inside with a few tables and chairs for dining in. I ordered the Spicy Sea Wrap (3/10) I was actually very very disappointed with my sushi wrap. The presentation of it looked great, but there was absolutely no flavor or spice! It came with a dipping sauce that I don't know the name of which had a very faint flavor to it and that was really the only thing I could taste when eating the wrap. No spice and no flavor, I wouldn't order this again at all. I also ordered their Hawaiian Mac salad (5/10). The flavor was decent with a slight weird after taste. I'm not sure if I would return honestly. My sister also ordered food with me when I went and she had the same complaints for her sushi wrap: no flavor... I came here with two of my friends to give a large order for my family and when I asked a question the man laughed in my face and said no which was plain old rude and after we were waiting by the cash register when a new group of people came in and the lady this time around basically yelled in our face "next order" instead of politely asking us to take a step back so overall terrible service. Next would be the food which was ok the spam looked a little old and overall pretty good but because of this bad experience I will hike all the way to poke sushi bowl on granby street because they are much more kinder than the staff here!! The ambiance was ruined and although they had chairs in there to sit with a small group sitting, you could tell they just wanted you to grab your stuff and leave. Mahalo is just what East Beach has been needing - a place to quickly grab a refreshing bite before, during, or after a beach day. I ventured to pick up my lunch order when I was driving home from my Saturday morning trip to East Beach Farmers Market. It was from Mahalo Poke House. Ambience: The restaurant is super clean, bright and airy and very organized. It was very quiet. No customers were dining. I can't even remember if there is music playing on PA system. I was greeted. I was asked if there were any question to which I indicated it was my first time. I was pointed to a menu. Quite friendly service although I was expecting more helpful response like asking what do I like - if vegan then they have a selection; or if seafood then pick what selection. The decor was simple, with theme of Hawaii (ukuleles line one wall). Food: I ordered to go: spicy spam musubi, Nori wrap and a Yum Yum Shrimp bowl. The musubi was really good, great seasoning; however the spam seemed overly cooked where it was too dry. Nori Wrap wasn't anything special, the tuna seemed to be canned tuna and not cooked fresh tuna. The Yum Yum shrimp Bowl came in either small or large portion. I ordered small but it was nowhere near the size of bowls sold at other poke houses. Kind of overpriced. And the to go packaging was paper so the paper was soaked and fell apart , wish they were lined with plastic so the paper wouldn't stick to the food! read more

I was in the area and being from Hawaii, Mahalo Poke House caught my eye!! Its located off Shore Dr. in a shopping center not far from E. Little Creek. Theres plenty of parking and its close to the beach!! When i entered i was greeted by one of the owners. A real nice guy who i chatted with while he was making my food. The decor was cute and the restaurant was clean with a good vibe!! I told him I'd never been there so he helped me with my order. Its subway style where the toppings are on a line. They have salmon, tuna, shrimp, crab, onions, sauces, rice, and more. I ordered a custom bowl with all the good stuff. I also got fish eggs and crab salad which have an up charge. Everything came to about $17. I asked for my salmon and tuna on the side so i could cook it when i got home... (Me and raw fish got a love hate relationship so i must cook it..) Lol. He didn't have a problem with that so i appreciated that. The meat isn't seasoned, so when i cooked it i added some and it kicked it up a notch. Yum.. The krab salad wasn't my favorite but i enjoyed everything else. If it had a little seasoning i think I'd like the crab salad. I know most poke bowls aren't seasoned, thats what the sauces are for. So make sure you get your favorite sauces!! The bowl was pretty good. It was filling and i enjoyed the sauces. It reminded me of home.. I also got a merm-ade house made blue drink. It was light, sugar free, and refreshing.. I don't recommend getting alot of ice if you get this drink because the drink is very light already, to avoid it being watered down. It was a hot day so it hit the spot. I had a free coupon so I'm glad i got to try it!! They have like 4 or 5 other fun flavors to try. I will start this off with one singular word: Rice. I don't know what they do to make their rice perfectly fluffy and soft and delicious, but it works! I ordered a large salmon bowl with a little bit of ahi. It worked because a large includes 3 scoops of protein so I just got double salmon and ahi tuna. It's very easy to customize your bowl, you can add extra items from their large selection of ingredients. For example, I added kani salad, pineapple, mango, corn, eel sauce, and spicy Mayo to what was already included. I finished that bowl so fast. I also ordered two spam musubi and it was amazing!!!! Wanna know why? Rice. It was still warm when I unwrapped the snack from its parchment paper. The combination of the salty, fried spam, seaweed, savory sauce, and THE rice danced on my tastebuds. Everything was washed down with the prime juice, which I liked because of the coconut milk. I also received a free drink after checking in so I used that offer to get myself a mer-made. Both drinks need a little bit more sweetness though. Overall, I enjoyed this place. I came in during the first hour of opening on a Sunday. No crazy crowd, just beautiful sunlight beaming into a serenely decorated place. I love the wall for photo opportunities. The ukuleles, macrame, and art contribute the the calm ambiance. First time eating a sushi wrap or "burrito". I tried all three wrap styles: shrimp ceviche, spicy sea, and ahi tuna. They were all good but the spicy sea stood out to me. It was a little bit chewier biting into the whole wrap but once you got a piece it was a burst of flavor in your mouth. The place is super clean, and certainly gives off the island vibes. The staff is very nice and very patient. I say that because there are a lot of options. And for most people who don't even know what Poke is, there is a learning curve. The fish is fresh, and the ingredients are, too. I really like all the options and I have the ability to go as crazy as I want. I would love the spicy to be a bit more spicy but understand this Norfolk crowd would file a spice complaint. It is tucked away in the East Beach Shoppes complex next door to The Sandfiddler Cafe. If you are coming from the Norfolk side of Shore Drive, you will cross a bridge past Little Creek Road and see an intersection with Pretty Lake Avenue on the right. The East Beach Shoppes are just a short distance ahead at the left. The interior is light and airy with a calm serenity emanating from its soft baby blue and white color scheme. Ukuleles and other pieces of art work adorn the walls. An abundance of natural light adds to the tranquility. A sign on their wall describes the word Mahalo as "....a Hawaiian value, one of thankfulness, appreciation, and gratitude as a way of life." Each Poke Bowl comes with your choice of base with either white rice, brown rice, or a spring mix. I chose the brown rice each time with the following: SPICY AHI BOWL: Raw Ahi Tuna, Cucumber, Seaweed Salad, Green Onions, Sesame Seeds, and Ginger over a bed of Brown Rice with their Spicy Mahalo Shoyu Sauce, a drizzle of Eel Sauce, and a dusting of Crushed Wasabi Peas. The tuna was delightfully spicy, and the flavors of the other ingredients worked beautifully. The eel sauce and spicy shoyu formed a dazzling taste combination. The crushed wasabi peas makes this one even more special with the added texture from their spicy crunch. My Rating: 5 Stars. TAKO POKE BOWL: Diced Atlantic Octopus, Green Onions, Sesame Seeds, Seaweed Salad, and Crushed Wasabi Peas over Brown Rice with a drizzle of Eel Sauce and their Spicy Mahalo Shoyu Sauce. I've never enjoyed a better tako bowl. The flavors dazzled my taste buds once again. If I could tweak this one even more to my liking, I would add one whole octopus tentacle atop the the center of the bowl for greater artistry. My Rating: 5 Stars. CREATE YOUR OWN BOWL: I made the following selections: SIZE: Extra Large BASE: Brown Rice PROTEINS: Ahi Tuna & Octopus MIX-INS: Seaweed Salad, Green Onions, Pickled Onions, Cilantro, Cucumber, Jalapeno, Wasabi Paste, Ginger, and Avocado for a small up-charge. SAUCE: Spicy Mahalo Shoyu and Eel Sauce CRUNCH: Nori Strips & Crushed Wasabi Peas I think I chose too many ingredients, forgetting that less is sometimes more. Some of them were crammed a bit awkwardly in the bowl, and I could not see the octopus from the top of the bowl. I also tried the following: LAGOON BOWL: Listed as one of their five Granola Bowls, this one consisted of a blend of Blueberry, Banana, Pineapple, Coconut Milk, and Blue Spirulina, topped with Granola, Chia Seeds, Shredded Coconut, and Blueberries. This one was cool, refreshing, and off the charts delicious. I could feel its nutrients surging through my body. My Rating: 5 Stars. MUSUBI: Listed as one of their A La Carte items, this one is a classic snack and lunch item that originated in Hawaii. The version served here consists of Spam, Furikake, Eel Sauce, and White Rice wrapped in Nori. I've only had Musubi at one other local Hawaiian themed restaurant, and this one gave me a much more powerful taste explosion. The eel sauce added extra magic to the already delicious combination of ingredients. My Rating: 5 Stars. I've also enjoyed a couple of their six specialty Drinks, each one of which is free of processed sugar. The health benefits of each one is described on their menu. PRIME JUICE: Coconut Milk, Cucumber, Blue Spirulina, and Pineapple Juice served over Ice. MAHALO COLADA: Pineapple Juice, Coconut Milk, and Orange Juice served over Ice. They were both refreshing and delicious. I sipped them slowly as I savored and enjoyed each one. My Rating: 5 Stars to both. This review comes with an enthusiastic 5-star rating. It's a quiet place with a few tables to sit down if you'd like. It's a meal that you'll feel good about eating too. Everything is very fresh, healthy, and big portions.
