Salmon poke
Sam A.

I love this place; such good poke bowls. Everything is customizable, choose proteins, sauces, condiments, etc. It can be a little overwhelming to choose all the options at first, but they give good suggestions if you're not sure. I like to get a bowl for the cooler for lunch, when I'm heading to the beach nearby. They do a really good lunch business, with poke, as well as Filipino food. Great, nondescript little building near 711, in between 1st View and Granby in OV. Highly recommended for some really good food!

This was my first time at Maymar and let me tell you how amazing my food was. I tried the 2 entree plate that came with white rice, adobo and curry chicken. The adobo was sooo good !!! I definitely should have gotten double adobo. I got a small pancit plate that looked pretty big lol the taste and flavor was definitely there. I tried one lumpia and 2 sweet chili wings. I saw them bringing out the pan of fried chicken and I HAD to try it. It was AMAZING !!!!!!!! They were still hot, fresh out or grease, and jammed packed with flavor. This place is a 9/10.

Recognition for making the Top 25 list

After landing on my Yelp radar for years, I finally got the chance to come here for some Filipino food. Most recently, they landed on the Yelp Top 25 list of restaurants in Hampton Roads. So on a day like today, why not stop by?? Once my girlfriend and I walked in, we immediately went to the counter to order. I chose 1 entree w/2 sides (white rice with chicken adobo and gravy and longaniza sausage). I also got 2 lumpia and Halo-halo for dessert (more on that in a minute). Overall, this was a good meal. The chicken adobo was cooked well and fell off the bone while the longaniza tasted great. The only negative out of the meal was the lumpia. Even though it tasted good and you could taste the meat, it was overcooked and was greasy, probably being cooked too long in oil. Would I get it again? Yes. Mistakes do happen from time to time. Now, onto the Halo-halo. I have been a fan of Filipino food for years now since becoming a Yelper. Eating treats from S'mores Amore and Jack Eats have really opened up my taste paletes big time. Last year, I had a specialty dessert from Only at Renee's in Va Beach called meis con hielo. Not too sweet but very satisfying. So when I took a look at what sweets Maymar offered, I chose Halo-halo, which is a frozen parfait consisted of shaved ice, evaporated milk and Ube ice cream along with fruits (too much to name here). Truly delicious. I can see why it's a very popular Filipino dessert. My girlfriend took a sample of mine and enjoyed it so much she ordered one herself to go. Not a bad thing at all. Besides the lumpia, I say our visit was a success. A small place with a staff that made you feel welcome. We even had a nice chat with the owner before leaving, particularly about the Halo-halo dessert. As the old saying goes, we will be back for another go-round.

First time here and I'm pretty sure that's it for me. I had the poke and it was ok but I could have gotten that anywhere poke is sold. Hubby had the traditional meal, he had the pancit and the chicken adobo. His dish had a super super long brown dark hair, sadly for him the hair was already in his mouth when he realized it. So gross, that really ended lunch pretty quickly.

A decent place for a quick bite if you're craving for a traditional Filipino food. We weren't hungry but wanted to just check out this place so we opted for two halo-halo. The price was fair for all the added bits in the halo-halo, not to mention it was delicious. The food looked appetizing and the patrons seem to enjoy their dining experience. One thing I notice was the guy behind the counter (could be the owner) was super friendly and seem to treat people like a friend - it's the Filipino hospitality! This place would not win a decor or ambiance contest but has a lot of potential for improvements. For example, the walls could use a touch of paint and new flooring. Overall, a decent place to checkout at least once.

Pork stew and chicken curry
Maria M.

Pork Stew (Menudo) traditionally consists of chunks of pork that is stewed in tomato sauce. Liver and potatoes are added afterwards. Bell peppers, chickpea, green peas, carrots and raisins may also be added. The Liver enhances the taste of the tomato sauce. You can eat this with rice or bread. Chicken curry is creamy and flavorful. It is bone chicken skin on. It has bell peppers, coconut milk, and curry. The service is good their staff are courteous. The place is clean. You can smell the food as soon as you enter the place. It invites you try what food they have for the day.

Okay so I was expecting a better appointed place but I guess the regulars don't mind the not so updated walls, seats, decor. I had wanted to order poke bowl since other reviews gave great reviews and posted really enticing photos. But maybe it was an off day or time (around 2pm on a Friday) the line of ingredients didn't look too appealing or lacked the amount to even make a poke bowl. So I ditched the poke bowl plan and went with the turo turo (buffet food line up). Since it was my first time, I asked if I can get pancit (noodles) instead of white of brown rice options that came with the 1, 2 or 3 entree meals. They said it would be an additional $3. I guess I am a little surprised when pancit is a staple just like rice AND other places give you that option without extra charge - like Felxxx Oriental Restaurant or Ihxw ihxx in Lynnhaven or even Gloxx Bakery along Kempsville Road. Then the service: not sure if sm experiencing the unfortunate new Asian customer who speaks Tagalog or not but I felt like I was rushed, when I asked what the entree was, it felt like I was being a pain / not my fault that there were entrees where they used ingredients that were not the original Recipe!! I went home with my to go order, quite frankly I haven't tasted it yet. But I think I've experienced enough that I don't think even if their food is good, they'd redeem themselves enough to warrant me going back; especially in this day and age where commerce depends so Much on word of mouth, consistency and reliability - customer service!

More fried fish

Was amazing, I would come back just for the fried fish. The curry chicken was seasoned just right. Sweet with a hint of spice. Adobo was on point. Wish u could order extra rice!

Pork Menudo

Hands down the best Pancit in VA!!! So tasty and lots of veggies. We tried the pork mechado, chicken curry, beef picadillo and chicken tinola. All tasted like my Mom's cooking. Every bite transported me back home. The service is top notch. Very friendly crew and the ambiance was relaxing. Clean and spacious inside. Will definitely be a regular here. I've noticed that their poke was also popular. Lots of people were ordering it from the menu so can't wait to try it next time.

MayMar is a well known name in the Hampton Roads area for Filipino food dining. This is one of my favorites as the people working are always friendly and willing to explain the dishes to novices. I had work function where I had to bring something to share. I bought a pan of their delicious pancit. Everyone loved the flavors! Definitely a great deal. They had quite a lunch crowd. I have to come out here for lunch. We will definitely be back.

They're only open for lunch?

Only open 11am to 3pm Tuesday thru Saturday.

Are they affiliated with the other Maymars in the area?

Yes, they are. I ate there today and asked. I was told that the two other Maymar restaurants in the area are separately owned by members of the same family. They all serve Filipino dishes. The new one, which opened in October of last year, is the… Read more

Everything I've had here is delicious, but here are some of my favorites: UBE BLONDIES *** Probably one of their most signature items that stays on the menu season to season, this crumbly, satisfyingly dense, soft baked good with that nice punch of ube flavor will really have you coming back for more. The frosting glaze is just perfect, adding that sweetness that carries the ube flavor really nicely. The texture is just soooo satisfying, you can just tell when you cut your fork through it that it has this airy, yet dense and crumbly texture. TURON FRITTER Kind of like an apple fritter, but oh so crumbly, delicious, bright, and soft on the inside. Also had their brown sugar boba pudding cup when it came out, and it was really good; the tapioca actually blended quite nicely and was chewy and fresh, which means you're not stuck chewing it forever. Definitely on the sweeter side, but brown sugar items tend to be that way.

Instead it was a Filipino bodega with a few aisles of grocery products, a cooler with frozen food flanking one side, a window at the back to order hot foods & a table at the front for sitting or eating. With respect to bakery goods, there was one almost empty stand at the front of an aisle with a few bags of Pan de Coco. I had called the night before & asked about Ube Purple Bread. She said that she was baking more the following day & would save a bag for me. What they brought out was a bag of 6 rolls with an Ube filling inside. It was tasty but not purple bread. My friend asked about Pandesal. They brought a bag from the back that were larger rolls. She should have asked for Ube Pandesal. These were tasty & soft. But they had no Ube filling inside & were more like a large dinner roll. It would have been nice to see what we were buying before the purchase. Asking if they had a menu, I was told that they eventually would. She was still trying to decide what to put on the menu. I'm not sure I'll return until choices are available. And please, give us a display of the baked goods. Even putting them bagged in the almost empty display stand would help. The store is in a shopping center on the west side of E. Little Creek Road. It is easily accessible for those of us who live in the Shore Drive corridor. The outside is tasteful & well maintained. The inside is definitely a bodega feel.

That said, while I enjoy many of the specialty flavors, I still find myself preferring traditional lumpia. That's more a matter of personal taste than a criticism of the food itself. The fusion flavors are good and worth trying, especially if you're looking for something different. The menudo was flavorful and filling the meat was tender but there were a few pieces with fat. The pancit was tasty. It wasn't heavy on vegetables, I wish there were more.
