As a fellow Filipina, I've had my eyes on Maymar Poke & Grill for the longest! I finally caved in when I was in town and grabbed lunch here with my fiancé on a work day. Though a lot of people come in from the naval base and the surrounding area, it's not a super busy spot. This place is very hole-in-the-wall and straightforward. They serve both authentic Filipino food and Poke. People come in for both! This place offers a "turo-turo" experience, like what you would do at places like Panda Express, Moe's, Chipotle, where the entree items/Poke ingredients are already laid out for you and you just have to point ("turo" in Tagalog) at what you want on your plate. Even if you don't know the name of the dish, the staff is very helpful. The nice thing is you don't have to wait for your food to cook! I don't know if this place keeps the same menu everyday, but usually in places like these, the menu changes, so what was offered the day you visited might be different from the next! :) They also offer a unique variety of asian brand drinks on their fridge that you can just grab and pay for on the counter. Overall, our meal + drinks were a cheap price! Everyone in there was incredibly friendly. And the food was good! We had the adobo and the longganisa and it was delicious. But like most Filipino dishes, what is a hit for me might be a miss for some. Filipino food highly varies in flavor based on who cooks it since most households have their own flare and twist on cooking certain dishes. This is one of those things where you just have to go in and try it for yourself and see if you like how they make it! I personally enjoyed the meal and would love to come back to try their Poke! The space itself is very small. Not a lot of seating inside. So more of a to-go joint than a sit-down spot. It also shares the same strip with other businesses, so not a lot of parking either. But if you're looking for a quick lunch on the go, I highly recommend this spot. read more

I love this place; such good poke bowls. Everything is customizable, choose proteins, sauces, condiments, etc. It can be a little overwhelming to choose all the options at first, but they give good suggestions if you're not sure. I like to get a bowl for the cooler for lunch, when I'm heading to the beach nearby. They do a really good lunch business, with poke, as well as Filipino food. I ended up not getting there until around 3:10, so I called when I realized I was gonna be majorly late. They ever so graciously held my lumpia for me and let me in the locked door to buy them. This was my first time at Maymar and let me tell you how amazing my food was. I tried the 2 entree plate that came with white rice, adobo and curry chicken. The adobo was sooo good !!! I definitely should have gotten double adobo. I got a small pancit plate that looked pretty big lol the taste and flavor was definitely there. I tried one lumpia and 2 sweet chili wings. Best poke bowl I've ever had! I let them make it for me however they want and it's always amazing!

After landing on my Yelp radar for years, I finally got the chance to come here for some Filipino food. Most recently, they landed on the Yelp Top 25 list of restaurants in Hampton Roads. So on a day like today, why not stop by?? Once my girlfriend and I walked in, we immediately went to the counter to order. I chose 1 entree w/2 sides (white rice with chicken adobo and gravy and longaniza sausage). I also got 2 lumpia and Halo-halo for dessert (more on that in a minute). Overall, this was a good meal. The chicken adobo was cooked well and fell off the bone while the longaniza tasted great. The only negative out of the meal was the lumpia. Even though it tasted good and you could taste the meat, it was overcooked and was greasy, probably being cooked too long in oil. Would I get it again? Yes. Mistakes do happen from time to time. Now, onto the Halo-halo. I have been a fan of Filipino food for years now since becoming a Yelper. Eating treats from S'mores Amore and Jack Eats have really opened up my taste paletes big time. Last year, I had a specialty dessert from Only at Renee's in Va Beach called meis con hielo. Not too sweet but very satisfying. So when I took a look at what sweets Maymar offered, I chose Halo-halo, which is a frozen parfait consisted of shaved ice, evaporated milk and Ube ice cream along with fruits (too much to name here). Truly delicious. I can see why it's a very popular Filipino dessert. My girlfriend took a sample of mine and enjoyed it so much she ordered one herself to go. Not a bad thing at all. Besides the lumpia, I say our visit was a success. A small place with a staff that made you feel welcome. We even had a nice chat with the owner before leaving, particularly about the Halo-halo dessert. As the old saying goes, we will be back for another go-round. read more

First time here and I'm pretty sure that's it for me. I had the poke and it was ok but I could have gotten that anywhere poke is sold. Hubby had the traditional meal, he had the pancit and the chicken adobo. His dish had a super super long brown dark hair, sadly for him the hair was already in his mouth when he realized it. A decent place for a quick bite if you're craving for a traditional Filipino food. We weren't hungry but wanted to just check out this place so we opted for two halo-halo. The price was fair for all the added bits in the halo-halo, not to mention it was delicious. The food looked appetizing and the patrons seem to enjoy their dining experience. One thing I notice was the guy behind the counter (could be the owner) was super friendly and seem to treat people like a friend - it's the Filipino hospitality! This place would not win a decor or ambiance contest but has a lot of potential for improvements. For example, the walls could use a touch of paint and new flooring. Okay so I was expecting a better appointed place but I guess the regulars don't mind the not so updated walls, seats, decor. I had wanted to order poke bowl since other reviews gave great reviews and posted really enticing photos. But maybe it was an off day or time (around 2pm on a Friday) the line of ingredients didn't look too appealing or lacked the amount to even make a poke bowl. So I ditched the poke bowl plan and went with the turo turo (buffet food line up). Since it was my first time, I asked if I can get pancit (noodles) instead of white of brown rice options that came with the 1, 2 or 3 entree meals. They said it would be an additional $3. I guess I am a little surprised when pancit is a staple just like rice AND other places give you that option without extra charge - like Felxxx Oriental Restaurant or Ihxw ihxx in Lynnhaven or even Gloxx Bakery along Kempsville Road. Then the service: not sure if sm experiencing the unfortunate new Asian customer who speaks Tagalog or not but I felt like I was rushed, when I asked what the entree was, it felt like I was being a pain / not my fault that there were entrees where they used ingredients that were not the original Recipe!! I went home with my to go order, quite frankly I haven't tasted it yet. But I think I've experienced enough that I don't think even if their food is good, they'd redeem themselves enough to warrant me going back; especially in this day and age where commerce depends so Much on word of mouth, consistency and reliability - customer service! read more

MayMar is a well known name in the Hampton Roads area for Filipino food dining. This is one of my favorites as the people working are always friendly and willing to explain the dishes to novices. Maymar is close to my heart because I absolutely love Filipino cuisine and culture. I come here at least once a month. It's literally 3 minutes from Naval Station Norfolk. Its a small location nothing fancy. It has a "hole in a wall feel" thats not bad because place like this always ae good and I have to say this place maybe small but mighty because the food is always on point and this place stays packed with customers and the staff is friendly too. Long time, no rice! I woke up wanting comfort food, and I only go to one place for Filipino food, besides my family gatherings, and that would be May Mar! As a kid without a filter, I'd ruthlessly comment on people's pancit because it wasn't May Mar quality but my taste buds always knew what was up. The OG in Norfolk on Princess Anne that I always go to is closed on Wednesdays, so I went to the location owned by the same family in the Ocean View area. Same goodness with the additional option of ordering poké! Ordered the traditional pancit and lumpia, turon, mechado, chicken curry, their bangin sweet chili wings, and a fried fish/munggo combo with a side of sinigang sabaw (im a separate photo lol I was hungry) My tummy and tastebuds are happy the vibes were nice in there too. Maymar is a bomb new Filipino and poke place that resides Ocean View right where Billy's Pizza used to be. It's split right down the middle depending on what you want to get. Poke to the left, and Filipino food à la carte to the right. I know that poke is the newest food craze to hit the scene, but I could not let that delicious smelling Filipino food go, so that's what I chose. The men working behind the counter were very friendly and helpful in explaining all the dishes that were out. I decided on getting white rice and three entrées to go (picadillo, pancit, and 4 lumpia). The food was amazing and served in a generous portion. Maymar is a nice change of pace for this part of Norfolk in terms of restaurants, and I hope to see this place stay here for a while. Been to this establishment a few times. A favorite of our work group. Very close to Naval Station ORF. I've had the Poke a couple times and some real food on one another occasion. Good selection to choose from, very fresh ingredients. For the amount of food dished up, the price cannot be beat! Fresh poke bowls are top-notch, it packs a punch for a light lunch! OMG! This is HANDS DOWN the best lumpia and pancit I have EVER had.... And I am definitely an "eater"! The lumpia is so crispy and fresh-and has such a godly flavor that takes you straight to heaven and back. I ordered 8 for my family but unfortunately they didn't get to have any because I ate them all on the ride home. LOL It's like one of those things you try and hide from your kids just to have that "mom moment" without anyone interrupting you or wanting a piece These lumpia are now part of a guilty pleasure. This place is FANTASTIC! My boyfriend and I saw it on the Top 50 Yelp List and of course, being massive poke fans, we had to check it out immediately. We were not disappointed to say the least. We did pick up and the order was prepared promptly. I ordered a salmon poke bowl and he ordered Filipino lumpia, chicken adobo, and pancit. The poke bowl was truly the best I've had in the area - all of the ingredients were fresh and the flavor was on point. It was my first time trying Filipino lumpia and chicken adobo - I loved it and would absolutely order again. I thought there prices were very reasonable for the quality and portions of food. Another great find, thank to Yelp. I landed in Norfolk (ORF), and did a quick Yelp search to see what was highest rated. In the top three was this Filipino/Poke spot. I love Filipino and like Poke, so it seemed like a win/win. I've been to the Philippines a few times, and consider it heaven on earth, but that's a whole other discussion. I came in for some adobo chicken, but left with that, lumpia (think a small egg roll, but filled with meat), some sort of pork dish, white rice, and a banana wrapped in dough and deep fried. Easily enough food for two, reasonably sized meals, and with tip and tax, it was less than $15. Best of all was the service. The owner was extremely helpful and very personable. The only complaint I had was that everything (silverware, plates, bowls, etc...) are disposable styrofoam. Not enough to ding a star, but as their business grows, I hope they go to reusable for eat in. I would eat here every week if I lived here. read more

Maymar Poke & Grill opened in October of last year (2017) in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, located on Maple Avenue at the former site of Billy's Pizza. If you're not familiar with the area, it can be a little hard to find. In fact, I got lost the first time I tried to find it, but I eventually managed to steer my car there successfully. This is a family run restaurant that serves Poke bowls as well as traditional Filipino cuisine. There are two other Maymar restaurants in the area, one in Chesapeake and the other one in a different section of Norfolk. They are owned and operated separately by other family members. This one in Ocean View is the only one that is currently serving Poke bowls. Their Poke bowl station is on the left, and their Filipino food is served on the right. Their Poke bowls and Filipino offerings are available for both dine-in service and take-out. I enjoyed their Poke bowls during my first two visits and described as follows. Depending upon whether you are Hungry or Hangry, you can choose two proteins for $10.95 or three proteins for $12.95, which I could not resist. LARGE POKE BOWL (1st Visit): Tuna, Salmon, Octopus, Watermelon Radish, Green Onion, Cucumber, Edamame, Cilantro, Seaweed Salad, Crab Salad, Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, House Shoyu, and Sesame Oil over Brown Rice. LARGE POKE BOWL (2nd Visit): Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp, Avocado, Watermelon Radish, Green Onion, Cucumber, Edamame, Cilantro, Seaweed Salad, Crab Salad, Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, House Shoyu, and Sesame Oil over Brown Rice. My Poke bowl during my 2nd visit included the addition of fresh avocado for an extra $1.50 and the substitution of shrimp for octopus, which was not available on that day. Both of these Poke bowls were incredibly delicious. The young and affable owner, Jan-Michael, named by his mother after the retired actor, Jan-Michael Vincent, is the most accomplished Poke bowl artist I have met in this area. He described how he spent some time in California developing his Poke bowl skills before moving back to Ocean View to open his new restaurant. When choosing your mix-ins, sauces, and toppings, he likes to layer them meticulously in a particular order. During my second visit, he took a fresh avocado, cut it open, and scooped out the contents neatly into my Poke bowl. This is something I have never seen before in this area. My Rating for both of my Poke Bowls: 5 Stars. I sampled some of their Filipino delicasies during my next visits: ARROZ CALDO: This is the Filipino version of congee, and their version was a delicious porridge of bone-in chicken pieces and rice in a chicken broth, seasoned with onions and ginger, and topped off with fried garlic and scallions. The bone-in chicken and fried garlic really puts this one on top, and I will be sure to order it again. My Rating: 5 Stars. PANCIT AND LUMPIA: A platter of egg and rice noodles sauteed with pork and vegetables with four pices of lumpia, which are crispy fried egg rolls with ground beef served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. The lumpia were tightly packed with meaty and delicious goodness, and I've never had better in this area. The Pancit was very flavorful, although a bit lukewarm from sitting in its container behind the counter. I didn't know it at the time, but they are willing to reheat any item which you feel needs a little extra heat temperature wise. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. TURO TURO STYLE PLATTER: This is a street food concept developed in the Phillippines. The phrase "turo turo" translates as "point point." You simply point to what you want and a generous spoonful is placed upon your plate. Here you can choose one entree for $3.99, two entrees for $5.99, or three entrees for $7.99. You get your choice of white rice or brown rice. I chose the following three items for my platter with brown rice. CHICKEN ADOBE: Stewed Chicken in Soy Sauce and Vinegar, mixed with Peppercorn and Bay Leaf. PICADILLO: Pinoy Style Ground Beef with Potatoes and Red and Green Potatoes. BEEF WITH STRING BEANS: This was one of their special additions for the day and served in a separate bowl. All three of these dishes were off the charts delicious and imparted an authentic homemade taste. My Rating: 5 Stars. The family members who work here are very friendly and always make me feel at home. My service has been outstanding . I am eagerly looking forward to my future visits. In addition to enjoying their Poke bowls again, I want to try a few more of their Filipino delicacies, including some of their special additions and specials.I especially want to try their Dinuguan the next time I see it offered. This amazing place is a (clean) gem hidden in Ocean View, home of the dive bars. It's on a quiet strip by a Chinese take out place and it's awesome. I've visited the Maymar on Princess Anne and loved the food, despite the crowded tables. Maymar Poke brings a wider open eating area that's comfortable to eat in and a selection of food that will make you so happy. I ate a poke bowl in house, they have a regular size with 2 proteins and a Hangry size with 3. Like most poke places the protein portion seems a bit small, then you go nuts choosing a lot of toppings and add ins... and suddenly you have a massive bowl of yum you're not sure you can eat. Everything here was delicious, fresh, and tasty. There were a lot of walk ins and they had to make a few more of things in the back I took an order of pancit home along with some lumpia. They were amazing, the pancit was the best I have had in a very long time. A fridge to the side also offers a wide selection of drinks. The restaurant is clean and neat, they have a nice modern register that's easy to use at a small business. The manager (owner?), Jan, introduced himself and I got a cool sticker for my car. My visit to the bathroom was pleasant, it was tidy and spacious. Maymar Poke is an awesome place to stop by if you're in the area, or want to grab a bite while HRBT traffic is yucky. You can easily get off at Granby before the traffic starts stopping, drive up, eat, then hop back on 64 closer to the tunnel. read more
