When I used to live in Surrey, Mahek was one of our go to Indian restaurants. Located on Scott Road, they share the same strip mall space with other businesses. I should also mention they have two locations and make sure if you order take out online that you're ordering from the right location. The decor inside has a deep tone theme to it. They have plenty of booths with nice comfy seats. Service is also consistent with friendly servers. Nowadays I mostly get take out from them, but they're just as tasty when I get home. They're also not joking when it comes to their vindaloos, they're proper spicy. The first time I ordered the lamb vindaloo with a friend, our server asked us twice at the table if we can handle spice, and afterwards the manager came over and told us it's a spicy dish. I found that quite entertaining, but do appreciate their concern. In the end we thoroughly enjoyed it down to the last drop of sauce. Their portion sizes and prices are also quite comparable to other places. Ordered food for a pick up and the price ordered did not reflect what was charged. They said in the store that the online menu was not updated and the final amount came out alot more. Impromptu late lunch brought us here We had a non veg thali that had Butter chicken - too sweet Chole- not bad Some veg curry- not bad Naan-good Rice pulav- peas and cumin A piece of tandoori chicken and onions Raita- yogurt with cucumber and spices Kheer- wet rice pudding made in milk...quite nice We also ordered the goat korma - a cashew based curry which was very tasty and had it with a lachcha paratha - layered / almost like puff flaky a pastry in a roti format also good Hubby had a mango sweet Lassi which I barely got a sip.of as he practically inhaled it We also ordered prawn pakoras - they came very lightly battered and were nice to eat And chilky pakoras- hoo! They weren't kidding about the spice... And I'm a put more chilly on it kind of girl! Hot but tasty Dessert for me was Ras malai- cottage cheese cream dumplings in a milky pistachio sauce - this is served cold...quite nice Then we got greedy and split a serving of Gulab jamun ! - fried dumplings (kinda like doughnut holes) and then dunked and served with sugar syrup...These came warmed with a sprinkling of pistachio powder...full points for heating the Gulab Jamuna... anyone who knows Indian food know you just don't serve Gulab jamun cold ! Some friends brought me here, and this place is worth the trek from the city! The place is decorated nicely, classy and clean. Service is incredibly friendly. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share around, I must say this place has the best pakoras I've ever had. I usually avoid butter chicken because it's too sweet and bland, but I had seconds of the butter chicken here, it's amazing. Lamb vindaloo was perfection, spicy with tender meat. This is my go to place for indian cuisine in Surrey. I love their fish korma and garlic naan. So that is usually my order. I also like to try one thing new off of their menu every other time I come here.the most recent time I tried their Dahi Pakori which I unfortunately have to say isn't for me. But I love their biryanis as well as their mango lassi. Service is really great. They usually are extremely welcoming and it's easy to ask if you need anything because they usually come check up on you. read more

The food really deserves 5 stars because it's really good. The flavours are just right and the spice is all balanced as it should be. My biggest qualm with this place is that their service is often not professional and the servers are not on top of their game. Half the time they don't have any idea what's going on and if your order had been taken or not. The last time I came, it also seemed like we were being rushed out of there as she kept on checking to see if we'd paid the bill so we couldn't even relax and have a decent conversation to catch up with each others lives (me and a friend I hadn't seen in a while)... So that's really what would deter me from going here the next time. But I suppose if you're doing take out, that doesn't really matter. read more

I took my parents here while I was visiting from Seattle on a Friday evening. The restaurant was busy but not every table was filled and there were ample service staff at the restaurant. Our waitress was unable to answer questions about the menu. Our questions were simple, "what kind of fish do you use in your fish curry" and "how spicy is the chicken korma dish". She was unable to answer either one and gave us a blank stare. Our cocktails and fish pakora arrived but the pakoras were too salty to eat so we just left them on the table. Over 60 minutes went by and we asked if our dinner was going to arrive shortly, we were concerned since the table next to us was turned twice since we arrived. Our waitress forgot to put in our order. At this point it was 10pm and we just decided to pay for our cocktails and leave. The restaurant manager told us it was a busy evening, no apology, no compensation. The appetizer we had was very salty and inedible and the service was down right pathetic. I would not recommend this restaurant, there are alot of other great options for Indian in Surrey. Desi Junction is one I highly recommend. read more

Went here as another yelper recommended it. Got it to go. The prices are on par with other Indian restaurants in the area. Ordered butter paneer (basically vegetarian butter chicken) it was ok, prob the least flavourful butter sauce I have had in ages. It was too thin and there wasn't a lot of seasoning. Also got the rav nathan vindaloo, it was also only ok. It was spicy but again other than the heat the seasoning was weak. We ordered some naan and roti as well which again was ok. The roti was way to thick and was dripping with oil, the naan's thickness was right but it was way too oily as well. Overall I won't order from here again. We collectively decided it is a safe place for white people to try indian food but I prefer more authentic flavours with deeper subtleties in the flavour. read more

Food was amazing! The portion size was a bit larger than other restaurants in the area. Customer service was a bit slow as the staff was busy attending to the larger party and then staff forgot to give us bags to carry our leftovers home when we asked for the bags while paying. There were 2 other small tables besides us and the large party. They were either too busy or just forgot about us the moment we paid. We have been frequenting this establishment for a couple years, and it's usually decent. However, after the last 2 orders we will not go back nor recommend anyone else go there. The last time we ordered, the butter chicken came with virtually no chicken, and was basically just sauce. We called them to let them know, and they offered to credit us a free one next time we ordered. This was about 2 weeks ago. Tonight, we decided to get that butter chicken, and ordered some samosas as well as a few other regular items. When I grabbed my samosa from the bag, the samosa exploded, so I ended up pulling out the shell with all the insides remaining in the bag, splattered all over the other samosas. We again called to let them know, and they offered to give us another replacement but we'd have to come and pick it up tonight. Well, we were literally sitting down for dinner, so we weren't about to leave our warm food to go get a single samosa. When we explained this, it all of a sudden became our fault that it broke, and the woman on the phone actually hung up on my partner after calling us liars. We took photos. We offered these photos as proof and they refused. So, in both situations we never asked for any sort of compensation, and after tonight's experience - being called a liar after initially being offered a replacement, and then being hung up on - we will never go back there. The customer may not always be right, but this treatment of anyone - customer or not - is unacceptable. We would have been happy with a: "sorry that happened, but thanks for letting us know. We'll make sure it doesn't happen again." I mean, it's a samosa. We're more about good service and quality food than getting free food for a screw up. read more

The service is okay and the restaurant is trying to establish itself as one of the funkier, cool places to go with your friends. They are almost there, the servers just need to be a little more "polished" and feel comfortable serving customers. With Asian food becoming much pricier these days, it's nice to have decent and reasonable food. Mahek gives you good portions, and prices. The timing on takeout isn't too bad either. I've had about 7 dishes from here. I liked them all except the tandoori chicken and veggie korma. Chick pea curry is okay as well. But their samosa, goat curry, butter chicken, and tikka masala are good. It's a good option then the Thai places in Surrey with tiny portions. I ordered food for my family on Father's Day. Found a staple in one of the dishes. I called to let them know and was immediately put on hold. When they came back they started saying that I always do this and this is my 4th time doing this. Which is impossible as I had moved to the states a year ago and was back visiting my family and this was my first time placing an order with them using my new number after leaving. Then they realized they had the wrong person No apology no nothing. I wasn't looking for a handout just wanted to give them a heads up. This restaurant used to be very good and was one of my favorite restaurants but not anymore. We ordered goat curry, lamb curry and butter chicken. We ordered these ones mild before and kids totally fine with that but this time they didn't even touch it and showed cranky expressions. We tried to let them know and fixed it but actually the same, just add some cream or coconut milk in my opinion. Ever since that moment, the waitress changed her attitude and looks very agitated . It was a Sunday evening around 8:30, I was in Surrey (random!). I was with one side of the family, and they wanted to check out that scene of a place called Tasty Indian Bistro, too much of a scene for us in the end, and waaaaaayyyy to much of a wait...60+ minutes, so we came here. At Mahek they said it was going to be a 20 minute wait, understandable, it is a weekend evening... So basically 3 of us came after the stipulated time period, and they put us in the back room because they hadn't cleared any of the dishes from the front of the restaurant, talk about being LAZY. Anyways whatever, we get seated...and, what, the waiter didn't even ask for any water? This was uncool, he knew we were waiting for our party to arrive...so he could have offered us something. When they arrived, he then asked us for water. Lame. 1* Chili Chicken ~ this is one of my most favourite Indian dishes, but here is tasted so bad. The chicken was REALLY overcooked, to the point where I couldn't cut it with the side of my fork :/, but the onions were raw. I love raw onions, but not in a dish where they are supposed to be cooked. Also while it isn't like a daal (meaning it should have broth), chili chicken shouldn't be dry either...ps, the chili chicken wasn't even that hot in taste! 2* Palek Paneer (spinach with cheese) ~ not as bad as the chili chicken, but the flavour of this was way off...not what I am used too at all. 3* Naan ~ not very fluffy...fluffy and warm and scrumptious naans are the best! You can tell that they are made in house, but something went wrong during the way. 4* Allo Tikki with chickpeas (potato patties) ~ quite good, and even though there were just two of them I would pay just under $5 for them! 5* Steamed Rice ~ underdone I told the 3rd, yes we had 3 different waitresses/waiters for no apparent reason, why the chili chicken was shit, and to take it back...so she took it off of our bill after my mom told her too, she didn't even offer. If they get something wrong, don't expect it to be on the house or replaced- they will give you "basically your fault attitude". Mirch Masala is much better in terms of food quality and service. I ordered takeout with some girlfriends. The front staff were friendly and welcoming when we entered the restaurant. I highly recommend the Mahek Dinner special. It had a bit of everything and was very good. The vegetable samosa was big and only $1. The vegetable Pakora was very good too. Definitely try this place out if you are craving Indian. A great restaurant. Good portions, average prices, nice ambiance. The food is super spicy! I asked for the curries to be made without dairy and the waitress explained to me that the spice level will be about medium because they make a dish mild spice level by adding cream. She has been going since it was a little hole in the wall at the other end of their parking lot. Suburbs oft get a bad rep but not if you've found the gems, like Mahek! This is where I eat when I crave Indian food and I drive all the way to Surrey from Vancouver for this. This was our 2nd visit to this Indian restaurant. The food was excellent again! My wife & I shared a mixed vegetarian snack platter for an appie that was very flavourful. For entrées, which we also shared, we ordered fish Korma, lamb Tikka Masala, small rice and naan..... we enjoyed it all. The service throughout the meal was also good. Today, Worst evening ever..... We have been to this restaurant numerous times before. Drove from Langley to spend birthday evening. Staff served drinks and food, bare minimum interaction. They had no courtesy that customer is there to spend an evening with good food drinks and company of each other. Servers loud amongst themselves, playing with kids, kids running around...... Update ... upon arriving found 3 people waiting for their take-out orders at 3:30pm on a Saturday, April 22nd, 2017. Since we hadn't visited for a while we didn't recognize the staff and we sat waiting for our usual mini-meals ($11.95 - butter chicken / 2-pc tandoori chicken / rice / chick pea side / naan) for over 20 minutes. While waiting for our food we couldn't help over hear the take-out patrons becoming increasingly upset as they were waiting for their food for over 45 minutes even though it was requested to be ready for pick-up upon arrival. To our dismay we realized we may have visited on a bad day as it was the Vaisakhi Day in Surrey so perhaps most of the regular staff was there. Now about the food ... all was the usual quality other than the tandoori chicken which tasted old, mushy and non-chicken-like if that makes any sense. Will update if we return :) read more

I love the lunch special and always get the butter chicken with tandoori chicken, rice and naan bread. They have the best butter chicken I've ever had and I love the naan bread as well. The samosas are pretty good but not the best I've had. At lunch time during the week it can be quite busy and sometimes it's hit or miss with quick food. My favorite Indian spot by far and I never pass on the opportunity to eat here if I am in town. Amazing butter chicken and veg/shrimp pakora. Their lamb curry and garlic naan are fantastic as well.
