Came here at night during Diwali and it was bumping! Lots of people out for their sweet treat fix (which is also why we went). We got a small variety box, and chose a bunch of different Indian sweets to go. They also have live golgappa and we got a plate of that too. Delicious! Food is very good. Wait is not ;) We had to wait 35 min for our order. The HVAC was out and it was stuffy and steaming hot in the front area. Kudos to the staff who were handling it well. They seem to have changed management a few times over the past year and are back honouring the coupon. They are now only doing take out service which makes sense given the space. The service is still very hit and miss...more often the latter. With the coupon, it is great value for butter chicken with naan and 2 samosas...enough for two meals...all for $9.99. I do like their naan and the taste of their butter chicken. One can order other options with the coupon but I go back for what I know and want. One-line review: Average food at a higher than expected price. We had: * their $9.99 lunch special (to go only, requires a coupon. We had butter chicken for the main dish.) * Chana bhatura * Chicken curry The first disappointment was that they wouldn't allow me to order three of the lunch special, as I only had one coupon. That one was on me, as I had additional copies of the coupon at home and wrongly assumed I wouldn't need one per lunch. Lesson learned. We got more than enough food, so decent portions, but it was $42 for three. That's not ridiculously expensive but I include the price because I think it makes sense to compare what you get to what you could get elsewhere at the same price. On that front, Dhaliwal doesn't fare too well. The curry was the best of the lot -- all white meat chicken, tasty sauce. The chana was seasoned differently than we've had other places, so not quite what we expected. The bhatura wasn't like any we've ever had and didn't seem deep fried and was almost indistinguishable from the naan. The butter chicken (also white meat) was too tomato-y and surprisingly sweet. Some habanero hot sauce (which we had at home) helped. It also took a while for my food to come; this is NOT fast-food. It took over 25 minutes to get food to go. I wasn't totally happy with the customer service, but in the end, it was mostly adequate. I parked for free around the corner, but one can also pay at the meters on and near Fraser. Bottom line: We got plenty to eat, but at this price point and location, I think there are better options. read more

Ordered some veggie samosas for takeout only to find that the texture of the filling was mushy and more like a paste. I have been to this place many times and each time the butter chicken and vegetable biryani were mouth watering and the portions are very big. You can never go wrong any time you order them. I can not say enough about their pastries. We always get a box of Gulab Jamun and Barfi each time we visit the place. In fact we just got one box tonight. The guy at the counter is very generous and always gives us free samples of the pastries. Quite unique place on Fraser street. Hit the spot on the days we dnt wanna drive up to surrey. Why unique you may ask? Well first of all let me be ultra clear to those people who might not give this place a try upon reading reviews such as 1) place had no napkins, 2) not nice seating arrangements, 3) didn't get chai 4) mix up my orders 5) blah blah blah If you look up this place online you will find they have 2 locations- one in surrey and one on Fraser street. So double check prior to phone order your takeout and then arriving there and screaming on the front staff. Be nice to those guys, they are trying their best to accommodate everyone and trying to punch food orders and get them to you. They do take time coz they are BUSY no matter what time of day you get there. They do tiffin service and large catering as well, which I would have done if I lived anywhere closer to them. Lucky is one hack of an asset to the place. He always make sure you get your order without waiting too long and a extra nice person too. We usually order food when I just need to keep something in my fridge or freezer handy for the week as the prices are great for the portions you get. Love there paneer labandar and hubby' fav main is kadhai chicken. I switch between chaat papri and tikki and gol gappe and everything in between. Aloo parantha is to die for- even on the following morning for breakfast as it comes with raita and gulab jamun. All in all everything is damm yummy. On my recent trip to Vancouver, I stayed with family that lives a few blocks down from this place. It's said to be a popular spot for good Punjabi-style Indian cooking. I decided to try this spot out and I must say, the food here is hit and miss, and the service here is pretty terrible. I ordered Bhindi Masala, Chana Chole, Butter Chicken, and Samosa and it was all very delicious. Everything tastes like a home cooked meal with the right amount of spices and ingredients. However, the chili chicken was made with too much sweet sauce. The garlic naan was dry and chewy. By the time it's ready to serve, it hardens up. And some of the sweets seem to be dried out, especially their ladoos. There's a lot of take out orders made here. Each order takes about anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes to make, and 50% of the time, there's a mistake in the order. If you decide to dine in, keep a close eye on your order because it gets very busy and they will forget about it unless they notice you staring at them. The establishment is fairly clean. Some of the furniture is outdated, the walls are slightly chipped and the paint seems to be peeling off. I believe this restaurant can thrive further if they took a little more pride into their business by doing a renovation to update the store and to be more organized. read more

I'll let you in on a little secret. This is my "go-to" place for Indian sweets and "ala carte" take away. The food is so flavourful. It's a true taste experience. Plenty of vegetarian options. They've been in the neighbourhood for years. I've been going there for over a decade. They only get better with age. Unlike some sweet shops, the decor is clean and pleasing to the eye. The owner renovates and updates every few years. Good Job! The staff are ALL super nice and welcoming. They make you feel completely at home. If you're not sure what something tastes like, they take the time to explain it to you. If you're lucky, you may even get a free sample. Pros: Biryani was good Cons: Best to avoid the Chole Bhature The restaurant was fairly low on covers so staff took this time to chit chaat super loudly in the kitchen. They completely forgot about us and I literally had to get up and walk towards the kitchen door to signal to a waitress. Here I noticed the kitchen floor and dude it was very dirty. Best Indian food restaurant in Vancouver. It's cheap and closest you can get to real Indian food flavor. Most of the North Indian dishes I have tried in Vancouver have too much ketchup in them to make it more palatable for Non-Indian folks. But, these guys have done a good job of keeping the flavor intact. However, I would like to mind you that their food will have lots of vegetable oil (like most Indian foods) which is quite unhealthy albeit it makes the food a little flavorful. The staff is OK and expect to wait around 10-15 minutes before your food is served because they are busy at all times. Not a good samosa place anymore at Dhaliwal Sweets 6555 Fraser St. I used to be a regular buyer of samosa's from Dhaliwal Sweets back in the day when it also sold Pizza and Pasta. Then it was located a couple stores south of where it is now. Today the samosa's are not worth stopping in for. The crust is not flakey. I don't think it was well fried. Seems like they were old and reheated somehow but not in a deep fryer. The inside potato filling was gluey. Not a nice texture. The only reason it got even one star is because it smelled okay and there was one pea. I may try something else but never again the samosas. read more

We ordered a number of dishes from them off of the menu flier that we received in the mail. Chicken curry, lamb curry, aloo gobi, and garlic naan. The cost of the dishes ranged from $13.99 to $15.99. I ballparked the cost at around $60 with tip. When I got the bill, it was just over $80. The prices printed on the wall were $4 to $5 more than the flier that had come in the mail. I paid it and the food was excellent. The same flier with the same prices arrived a couple of weeks later. Lesson learned. Fool me once, shame on you. We are one and done with this restaurant. Decided to try this place out since we were in the area and were craving chole paturey. It mostly is a takeout place and a mitthai place (Indian sweets) and not much seating. We ordered our meals along with a coffee and a water, and sat at one of the tables. Food came out soon after and it was pretty impressive. The meal came up with dhai (yogurt), a side of vegetables and a gulab jamun (dessert). Chole had pretty good flavor, and it came with 2 paturey. They were good, but pretty oily and heavy. I didn't give it 4 stars since they forgot both our drinks and the paturey were drenched in oil and I couldn't finish the first one. This is great place for Indian food, and I will try another dish next time that may not be so heavy. read more

On a recent visit, I had to wait for my samosas (which I don't mind because it means I get fresh from the fryer samosas). Went here for breakfast during our trip to Vancouver. This is a restaurant owned by family where they serve fresh food. Its very hard to find a place where they serve fresh tea. Environment/ambiance: Generally a take-out joint (only 3X small tables for eating in) but they also delivery it seems. Family run type place, very busy with take-out. Counter-shelves show case various Indian desserts you can choose from. Food: We found out about this joint through their promotional advertisement--any choice of butter chicken, chicken curry, karahi chicken, shahi paneer, aloo gobi, chana masala or harchi paneer, plus total 8 triangular pieces of naan, rice, salad (onions/daikon), 2 potatoes samosas all for just $9.99. We chose "mild" for the butter chicken. All items freshly made, piping hot, authentic and delicious. As it gets busy and food is freshly made when you order, you may need to wait anywhere from 15-30 min but it's well worth the wait! The one order is more than enough for two people (unless you are a huge eater)! Add: They also offer vegetarian and fish dishes AND chicken burgers/fries (various non-Indian choices). Service: They are a small business and work very hard. Cashiers are usually young (20's) and busy taking the cash, answering the phone orders & packaging the various take-out meals (all my experiences with them are efficient and nice). Add: I have been frequenting this little establishment many times now and love authentic Indian meals--Dhaliwal has freshly made food, very good portions, decent service and good prices. Stopped here for some takeout after buying fabric at Rokko down the street. Butter chicken + rice + naan was $10, which seemed steep (especially compared to New Novelty a couple of blocks down), but it was very high quality and a huge portion that ended up being 2 very satisfying meals. Really delicious chicken- very intensely flavoured. A teeny bit on the sweet/tomato side for me, but the rest of my family thought it was perfect, and the spice blend was really good. Also got samosas to take home. 60 cents each, though they charge extra for tamarind sauce. These are the best (non fancy place) samosas I've ever had. The pastry is thin and crispy and non greasy, and the filling is perfectly spiced. The take out menu is relatively small, so I don't know if this will become a go to for a full Indian dinner, but it's a great option in the neighbourhood. read more

"Samosas: a punch to the face that starts your train ride to flavourtown." This review is strictly about the SAMOSAS. Rarely do you find something so good and so cheap. The Asian in me just gets so damn excited when I pick up a dozen (or two) of these deliciously awesome pockets of potato spiced up love. Note: I hate samosas which are all thick skin and very minimal filling. Samosas here have a very thin outer skin, and a bounty of potato mixed filling. The potatoes have a wonderful waxy texture that is perfect for samosas. The right amount and mix of spices feels like a refreshing punch to your face when you have that first bite. Yes, you are indeed in flavourtown and all of your taste buds are invited. But wait, you gotta have the sauce. A sweet, but not too sweet tamarind sauce adds yet another punch of flavour on your lips. The kicker: they are 3 for $1. Yes that is correct. 3 for $1. They've always been fresh every time I've come in and ordered them. Have them fresh and they are amazing. I always have to eat one in the car ride to wherever I'm going. The smell just engulfs the vehicle, so I can't help it. Bring them home and reheat them up, still good. No one could eat their meals because the heat was out of this world. We were all sweating like pigs on a hot Sunday morning. They also sent a incorrect dish. When we called they blamed us for the mix up, but eventually agreed to credit us for the one incorrect dish. Two days later and no credit, now they claim since it wasn't done on the same day it's not possible!!!???? As for the spice level, they claim it's the Indian way. When we placed the order and asked for "mild", we were told it was "no problem". I call Bullshit. Clearly this place doesn't know what customer service is. Its very easy to miss this place.. Its small and doesn't catch the eye when you're passing by. But this is a hidden gem. How many places do you know that infact serve fresh crisp alu tikkis? Their Chana is scrumptious.. You can try their Chole Bhature, Tikki Chole or Chole Samosa and its all delicious! We tried their Paneer tikka but its was dry and chewy but I am not sure if this is how they usually serve this or it was because of their Langar outside the restaurant. Also, the footfalls they have is incredible.. And they only have three tables so its a good idea to get a take away. When you visit, you may find that they are understaffed, the orders may get delayed, it may even get loud in there but one thing you can be absolutely sure of is a 10/10 service. The girls are extremely polite and make up for anything that goes amiss when you visit the place. And they are more than generous too. This was our favourite Indian spot, one we recommend to the many guests we host, but now it has dropped fast. Originally some of the best butter chicken we've ever had, but now barely edible - the last two times (one month apart) it has such a strong cinnamon and clove overtone that it is unenjoyable and caused indigestion. We are so sad to lose one of our favourites, but it seems they have changed their recipe for this staple dish - so we won't be back anymore. read more

This place is nearby, like many others in this area of Little India, however this little shop has a nice clean display of their various sweets. They even sometimes have a plate of sweets to sample on the counter. Once ordering my meal special they even gave out a potatoe ball (Sorry don't know the real name). Just these two gestures are a good example of a restaurant wanting to become successful, they know how to provide good customer service. Why just 3stars then? They also offer a take out coupon special with your choice of curry chicken, butter chicken, karahi chicken, palak paneer etc. it comes with rice, two servings of naan, one piece of sweet 2 vege samosas and a mini salad. Quantity-wise it's a great deal. However I for some reason cannot eat potatoe, my stomach doesn't agree...so I ask for meat samosa instead but on two separate occasions they said they don't have any, no chicken nor beef samosa. Instead of substituting the vege samosa for meat ones I asked for more salad instead, which I got. However the vegetable were dry and sitting....I'd say it's at least 2 days old... compost it went. So the second time I came in for the same takeout meal I told them their veges were old and asked for sweets to substitute the vege samosas...and received no changes as if my request was ignored. -1 star for old sitting food -1 star for not trying to help understand customer request -1 star for no meat samosas (every other shop sells it, you may need to wait for it to be cooked) Will I come back? It's tough because once I get home I have to through out their vege samosas and salad...I hate wasting food, but I guess I could order something else easier for them to understand. read more
