I've eaten here several times over the last 10 years, but not recently. Last night I went for the first tim in about 6 years and it's still amazing. The food is delicious and the prices are VEY reasonable! I have eaten at other Thai restaurants in the area and where the prices are higher but the quality isn't significantly better. My best friend came with me. We both had the Gang Daeng (Red curry) with beef. I got medium, while they got hot. It was my friend's first time there, and they were absolutely blown away. We cannot wait to go again!! I cannot recommend Mahnin highly enough!! read more

Now this is a place that has perfected their specialties over the years! Ft. Wayne is so lucky to have such a great Burmese/Thai restaurant in the city. I saw this place listed on the top 25 Burmese restaurants on Yelp the other day and knew I had to go visit it asap! This was my first time trying this place out but my brother has door dashed from it many times. So the exterior (and interior) are nothing special. I mean, the parking lot is a war zone. The service is also nothing special, although they do try. The highlight is definitely the food. We ordered samosas, Burmese noodles, and Burmese coconut chicken soup to split between us. We didn't need to order the samosas as they weren't anything special, but they were hot! The Burmese main dishes were where the party was at! The noodles had this fantastic peanut sauce I'm still dreaming about and the coconut milk base of the soup was delicious, thick, and filled with chicken and noodles and a nice heaping helping of cilantro. Small restaurant in an unexpected area :) I recently fell in love with Burmese coconut noodle soup dish, so I'm trying it everywhere I find it. In compare to some other restaurants, their coconut soup was super oily, and I felt that the egg noodle used in the dish didn't marry well with the soup either- 3 star. Their Bermese noodle salad was really good though(5 star). I order the food togo, and I received a friendly service over the phone, and I can tell they put care into packaging up the food, so 4 stars for overall experience. read more

I use to crave this place every day, but since the management/kitchen staff changed a couple years ago, it pains me to say the food is not the same. Not horrible by any means but no longer my top recommendation. I specifically order pad Thai and samosas. The noodles are consistently dry, and I do prefer my pad Thai with a little more sauce/chew. The samosas lack seasoning and got got smaller. However, I still appreciate the large portion sizes and restaurant's ambience/structure. read more

Mildly recently I was in Fort Wayne for a rotation (I'm so bad about posting as I'm at a place) and my goodness why did no one tell me they had so many great restaurants! One of my favorites was this wonderful Burmese/Thai restaurant that was exactly what was needed on a cold day. Pulling up it was definitely a small and close space and we definitely almost missed it lol. It was pretty clean and put together though. Our waiter was nice and funny. But onto the food. Coconut noodle soup (kinda like ohn no kauk swe if you've ever had that but with a heavy coconut flavor; man it was packed with flavor and really warmed me up) Glass noodles with seafood (I think this was a special because I can't find it on the menu anymore, but the seafood tasted amazing and the noodles were cooked to perfection) Pad Thai (no explanation needed here. A very popular dish done well and with some heat if you ask for it. Plate was licked clean) Pad siew (another no explanation dish. Something about these wide fat noodles really does it for me, but that beautiful sauce coated every piece of that noodle and it was a delight to eat) I highly recommend visiting this little hole in the wall. The food was good. Which is why I gave it 4 stars.....BUT.... It was a cold, damp spring evening & we don't think they had heat. We, as well as the other table with people, kept their coats/ jackets on. The inside is small & lacks ambiance. As I said the food was good and the person who waited on us, owner was very nice. It's been several years since we have been here. However they still do an outstanding job. The facilities have not changed. They are very simple. On this occasion...it felt uncomfortable that carry out patrons were standing in the aisle next to our table while we were eating. It's a Covid kind of thing. The waiter was outstanding. He isn't very verbal or outgoing. However he was very kind and demonstrated a reverent servants heart. You could see this in how he served dishes to you and refilled your drinks. He even walked you to the door and opened the door for you. Very nice!! We started with the shrimp rolls. These were fried wrappers filed with shrimp and a creamy filling. The rolls were crispy. The shrimp filled the whole roll. The sweet and sour sauce was homemade...a little thicker and spicy than you usually get. My wife had the pad Thai noodles with chicken. She really liked it. I had the pad woon sen noodles with beef. The veggies were fresh. The beef was tender and moderately plentiful. I ordered a medium heat. I really didn't detect much heat. Still a great place to try. It was our first time here today. The food is fantastic and the price pint can't be beaten! I got the pad khee mao, spicy with extra beef and it was wonderful! It was flavorful, with well cooked vegetables and lots of beef. The noodles were well cooked. It left a pleasant tingle of heat. I didn't get a picture before I started eating- apologies. My boyfriend had the pad Thai with chicken and medium spice level. He's not the best with heat and said "it's got a bit of a kick but it's perfect." HOLE IN THE WALL!!! That means hidden gem in foodie! Every time I come in I get something that is absolutely delicious! I brought my brother and his girl. What we did not like the most about this place is that they do not peel the shrimp. The shrimp egg roll has an unpeeled shrimp in it. Their Curries with shrimp are also unpeeled. The curry comes out very hot and peeling very hot wet shrimp is not fun. We also did not like eggplant in our curries. It was not cut bite size, and was just and overall miss for the dish. Green or red peppers would have been better. The curry flavors were good. The Panaga curry was even more tasty then the Gang Keaw Wan curry. Had the shrimp been peeled I would have at least gave this place three stars. read more

Hole in the wall place with DELICIOUS food and the sweetest owner. Came here with my fiancé on a cold winter evening as we were passing through on the way to Purdue. From the outside, in the dark, the place looked eery and unsafe. But don't let that deter you! As soon as we entered we were greeted and seated by the owner. We ordered the samosa appetizer and pad thai dishes. Their entrees come with a homemade soup (scallions, vermicelli) and even though we only ordered one entree, the owner brought us each a bowl of soup :') Samosa apps were your standard curry potato fillings deep fried. Delicious, hot, and gets your appetite going. The pad thai noodles though were the highlight of the night. Portions are HUGE - we couldn't even finish between the two of us on top of the individual starter soups and appetizer. Noodles had the right amount of chew, sauce was the perfect amount, and honestly the only detail I missed was that they don't give you a wedge of lime or lemon with these noodles. I'm sure you could probably ask though. The nice thing about locally owned spots = the amount of flexibility and personalization the owners will put into your food to make your experience as satisfying as possible. I was in town for the weekend and was eager to try out Mahnin, after reading excellent reviews on Yelp and the local paper. We arrived early on a Saturday night around 6:00 PM, and immediately noticed that the place was packed. The owner-server appeared to be ridden with anxiety at the prospect of another table to serve; she was not unfriendly, just swamped. I ordered the Burmese noodles with tofu and veggies, and tossed the side dish of shredded cabbage & chili on top. Mahnin offers a nice selection of table sauces to amplify its dishes to your tasting; fish & oyster sauces, pickled carrots, ground peanuts, brown sugar, hot sauces galore, etc. We received complimentary chicken broth, which tasted vaguely of ginger and had a few pieces of shredded chicken floating about. Since Mahnin was almost out of its homemade samosas, the owner offered to supplement our appetizer with spring rolls, which were a tasty combination of veggies and pork. My dining mates enjoyed their dishes of panang curry and pad gra prao with fried egg & basil, although the pad gra prao's "medium" spice level more tasted like "super hot" and was jalapeno-heavy. If you plan to visit for dinner, I recommend stopping by in the early PM. Mahnin closes at 8 PM, but we noticed the owner locking the door around 7:20 PM-7:30 PM. We think she was overwhelmed and they were running low on appetizers and other items (since everything is freshly made in-house). The atmosphere is okay, a mishmash of tables & booths crammed into an awkward space (former mechanics stop/filling station). I tend to pro-rate Fort Wayne restaurants against Indianapolis, so a 5 star restaurant in the Fort would be lesser elsewhere. However, Mahnin feels like a true 5. The deliciously-complex spicy food superseded any atmospheric issues; go there for the food, go early, and try something new (no pad thai!). read more

Well, the 2 stars are for the owners of Mahnins. They are fairly new. From what I understood a year or so. Very nice people. So now the food. Wth happened here ??? I read some of the reviews about trying the shrimp egg rolls. Omg !! They were very tough and chewy wrapped in sea weed , they a thin wrapper and deep fried. Horrid and hard to even chew. Very fishy tasting . The dip on the plate was very tasty. Left that nasty stuff for the garbage bin. All the sauce was gone. Why you ask ??? Here's why. The Burmese fried noodles were BLAND !!! The Pad see u. (sp) BLAND !!! The noodles in both dishes were too soft. Pad see u noodles were mush. So we dumped that dipping sauce on these dishes to make it have taste. Was a bit better. My Husband said it was good when asked. I said nothing. My fault. However, I could not keep quiet. I did tell him the food was bland and the shrimp egg rolls inedible. He saw I tried to pull the shrimp out of them abd told him why. Then told him about the noodle dishes. He said he isn't sure about some seasoning and spices for uuuum Americans. Okay I totally get it. Burmese and or Thai can be too spicy and hot for some, but we told him wr have eaten here for years when Mahnin owned it and we go to Yummy Thai on eState and Beacon all the time ( they were closed for a few days ) and get medium heat and whatever else they season there food with. Always the best !!! Didn't care to haggle about the food not eaten, just paid and left. Will we go again ? We decided that it was finally time to show Mom her first Thai experience. We came to Mahnin Asian Restaurant based solely on the high Yelp reviews. The restaurant checks all your boxes for a hole-in-the-wall find. There are two main areas to sit. It wasn't too busy at the time, so we opted to sit in the booths near the counter/kitchen, passing storage shelves full of large green papaya and other ingredients. The outer dining room might have been a little more decorative and well-lit, but where we sat made it possible to hear the flurry of activity in the kitchen, which Mom enjoyed. We started off with a Thai iced tea, and a hot Burmese tea, which were similar in flavor, if not temperature. After a few moments of sizzling in the fryer, our shrimp rolls and sauce arrived at the table piping hot. While enjoying those after they had cooled somewhat, we perked our ears to the sound of our papaya salad being chopped and pounded together. When it arrived, I was delighted to show her how it was made traditionally, as it included bits of seafood and the rinds of the limes, exactly as I've had it made for me in markets. Even though tamed down to a single chili, it was still a bit hot for her, so I sadly couldn't (bwahaha!! didn't have to) share much of one of my favorite dishes with her. For entrees, we listened closely as the pad kaprow (which the waitress had recommended as the best she's tasted anywhere) first had its turn in the work, followed thereafter by the pad sukiyaki. Both were excellent, and prepared with mild spiciness, mom found she could enjoy both. The portions were very generous and prices are reasonable, and we had plenty to take home. Having grown up in the area, I was quite surprised to see a place this authentic in Fort Wayne, and I'm delighted to have an option like this when I return. Well done! read more

O.M.G. What an amazing experience this was! A real exploration for me, personally, as I had never had Bhurmese food before. But beyond that - the people! The kindness! The love they put into their food! And, the GENEROSITY of their food, both in taste, explanation, and volume. As an example, we ordered a papaya salad as a side dish. I have had some amazing papaya salads, and am quick to try to compare different versions. This little dish came out. It was a couple of bucks, so I thought it might be a side-dish portion of shaved papaya, and maybe some hot peppers and a dressing. No, no - it came out in a huge dish, and had all kinds of seafood in it. Not what I was expecting, and not something I could really eat since I don't eat seafood. But, my dining companion could, and I was amazed at the quality and generosity of the seafood in the dish. We probably ordered 5 of 6 dishes between the two of us, because we were visiting Fort Wayne and weren't sure when we would get a chance to try Bhurmese food again. All said, our bill was like 20 or 30 bucks. Peanuts for the variety and quality of food we were served. Amen - Bhurmese or not, this is definitely a place you should support when you are in Fort Wayne! read more

Just found this place this afternoon (3/8/14). Very good food, large quantities at reasonable prices. I had the Gang Panang with Beef (curry in coconut milk, lime leaves over rice) medium spicy. Very good! My wife had the Burmese style noodles with seafood (not spicy). It had shrimp & squid and maybe eggs in a brown sauce. Also very good! Our friend had stir fried vegetables with tofu and rice. The place had only a couple of tables with people at them when we arrived, but the food took a while to get to us, so the server gave us each a samosa (triangular deep-fried wonton skin with potatoes, cilantro, peas, and celery-served with a nice spicy chili sauce) for being so patient. The people are very nice there, and could explain what's in each dish. The menu was also very helpful, since there were pictures and descriptions of each dish. Mahnin reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall places I grew up with in San Francisco...not much of a decor, GREAT with the food and prices. We also talked with the owner...she's originally from Burma, but has lived for a while in Thailand, so that's why there's a mix of Thai and Burmese food. Oh yeah, I noticed that there were many Burmese who had phone ordered food for takeout while we were there. Only one family stayed and ate there. Excellent food. We'll be back! read more

This place totally takes me back to my trip to Myanmar (Burma), it's about as authentic as you can get. The Burmese style noodles and samosas are both amazing, and the prices can't be beat. The one huge thing you should know about this place is that the food all takes a LONG time to make. Everything is cooked from scratch, which is a plus, but don't expect to wait any less than 45 minutes for your meal to be cooked, and plan at least an hour and a half in total if you are going to dine in.
