I had a FANTASTIC experience at Mahoney's Garden Center in CONCORD, MASS. I had a goal to buy indoor house plants, and recognize I am not yet good at keeping plants alive. Here is why I rate it 5 stars. (1) HISTORY OF GOOD SERVICE. Based on a good experience at this very store about 3 years ago (and yes that plant is still alive & thriving, even with my poor skills) I returned on Saturday. (2) IMMEDIATE HELP FROM AN ENTHUSIASTIC CREW I went to this Mahoney's with a friend who is excellent with plants, and we walked through the entire enormous greenhouse/garden center to identify what plants I liked, and what we thought may be a fit in terms of size, care, access to light, price, etc. Once we had our "list" I asked for assistance. First, there was a SUPER FRIENDLY young man, (Logan I believe?) and he IMMEDIATELY was incredibly enthusiastic about plants. With an encouraging tone, he personally guided us through the store and show us his favorites and why he thought I could manage them. As our conversation deepened, he immediately connected me with gardeners there who could better help. Mahoney's is incredibly lucky to have such a welcoming employee as this one. (3) EXCEPTIONAL ADVICE FROM NATALIA. We were BLOWN AWAY by the energy, knowledge, competence, patience, and follow-through from NATALIA in the Mahoney's in Concord. She was down to earth, did not rush us, and personally walked us through the store as well. She listened to my needs, looked at a few photos of my room/space and provided creative solutions and helped steer me away from plants that she thought would not thrive in my space, while directing me to others that she felt convinced would look great. I am not kidding. I bought 6 plants, and my friend who was NOT planning to buy a plant, bought one too. That's how awesome Natalia is. I am impressed with her follow-through, personalized service and advice. Natalia was SO AWESOME I had to stop what I was doing to write this review. I love the Winchester location, but not this one. The people are so unhelpful. No one asks if you need help or looks like they can stand being there. The plants are beautiful but I'll stick to Winchester because at least they are friendly. read more

I called in to see if they had what I was looking for and when visiting the representative quickly showed me where the product selection was and had great advice on planting and what to expect in the coming months. I was in need of some new plants to help me make it through the remaining weeks of winter and decided to go to Mahoney's in Concord to scratch the itch. I love how the website shows many of the plants that are available, and how many are in each store. I was greeted enthusiastically and offered help on entering the store. Every staff member I encountered during my hour of browsing was very friendly. There is a nice selection of plants to choose from and I walked out with a beautiful Philodendron Gloriosum which has adjusted very well to its new environment and new pot. I love this place but today was very disappointing. I was there buying $350 worth of stuff and I asked two younger girls that were working if they sold large sunflower plants? They were too busy texting on their phones to even acknowledge me let alone make iContact. They just both replied "no!" After browsing around a little bit more, I went to checkout and I said hello to the cashier and got no response so I asked her how she was doing today? She replied "better if I wasn't here" and was less than friendly to say the least for the rest of our interaction. I was never asked if I was a rewards member until I said something and that seem to be a total inconvenience as well. I realize that getting good help is hard for a lot of businesses because I own a small business myself. Regardless, it's better to be understaffed than to have staff there that treat customers the way that I was treated today by three of the employees. I would still definitely recommend this location because their plants are beautiful and they have very nice stuff. One would just think that for the amount that they charge for their items customer service would be top notch and it wasn't even close! read more

It was my first visit, the place is huge so I wasn't sure where things were. I had two interactions with employees that were not pleasant. With one I had a question about growing something in the summer and he was almost sarcastic and rude with his answer. With the other I asked where something was and got an answer to the effect that I should have know how to find it myself. I did meet a lovely customer who was very knowledgeable so she gets one of my stars. And the girls at the checkout counter were very nice so they get the other star. read more

The selection is fine and prices are average, but the staff aren't helpful. They just point in the general direction of where something will be "if we have any". It's like they don't care about sales at all. This happened with more than one employee. It is near Route 117 and has ample parking. read more

Steve in the gardening center was great and helped us troubleshoot a long-running plant issue, ensuring he understood the problem that needed to be addressed rather than just pushing some products on us and sending us on our way. Overall the rest of the staff we interacted with was mostly friendly and helpful, though a few of them were somewhat abrupt. read more

I've been a loyal Mahoney's customer for many years. I've purchased many shrubs/perennials here and am a very knowledgeable gardener. Had an issue that I needed to return a shrub that didn't survive. The manager handled the return. She looked over the shrub and proceeded to reprimand me and how I didn't plant it properly and it was my own fault. She was annoyed and condescending. She then briskly handed me a planting instruction guide! It was embarrassing while other customers and staff heard all this. There was absolutely no reason to have spoken and handled me in this manner. She's a brute of a woman who does know the meaning of customer service. Consequently, I will not return to Mahoney's again and will take my business to Weston Nurseries. read more

Mahoney's has a great selection and the staff was helpful, but unfortunately 2 of the 3 large plants I purchased from them had mealy bug infestations. One of them died pretty quickly despite treatment, and the other one is still struggling. I've had dozens of houseplants for a few decades, and I've never had this problem before, but within just a few days of bringing these plants home they were covered. These plants were hundreds of dollars each, so it's especially frustrating. When I was in the store I found a small lizard on one of the plants, which at the time seemed like a cool thing, but in retrospect I think it's another indication (alongside the mealy bugs) that they need to inspect the plants they receive a little more closely. read more

If you're looking for anything the Winchester location will have it. Concord tries really hard to be helpful, just no where near as much stock. The people at both stores are helpful and informative. They don't try to sell you on stuff, they try to inform you and assist in your selections. read more

I have lived in Concord since 1984 and I have to say the staff is not friendly. They act like it's a bother to wait on you. I spoke with the manager and he made no apologies which tells me a lot since I've worked in retail for 20 years. They definitely need to work on their customer service. read more

Consistently rude and disrespectful at Concord Mahoneys. I've Been going here for a couple of summers, only because it's close. Today I stood listening to the two cashiers conversations for an uncomfortable few minutes until I finally had to interrupt and ask to be rung out. I've since found many other gardening centers nearby that are much better. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. The Winchester one is much nicer and so is the staff. Was in there getting an orchid for my mom as a gift, and one of the workers was super nice and picked out a pot for me and put the orchid in it. Yay. But then in line I came up at the same time as an older, affluent customer. My cashier abandoned my line and left me standing there, to help the other cashier put a bow on the other woman 's one-plant purchase. No, the other lady wasn't being any trouble, and didn't have a huge purchase. Yes, she saw me standing there, rather happily really, for the full transaction before me, and just decided she's rather ... tie a bow. No apologies, and in fact, a very snotty, dirty look when I asked politely that she please come back and ring me up. Try to spend local, like I should have. They are a chain, and probably the priciest around. They cater to shoppers who can drop by and buy a 30' rose hedge they saw in a magazine. For plants, Brigham's is right around the corner, has a vast selection, and is an old local family business. Verrill's is almost across the street, and has all the expensive chotskies you could want -- and they're nice to their customers, whether they look like they just came from Ann Taylor's, or just came in from working in the garden. read more

Okay selection of plants, usually more expensive than other nurseries and not so helpful staff. We asked couple questions about the care of the plants we were about to purchase, and the girl at the counter almost shut us down and asked us to google the questions! Definitely not acceptable customer service. Especially right after we've been to Russels where we interacted with staff who were very patient and enthusiastic and even offered us handouts. We wouldn't have come here if they didn't run out of the citrus trees we were looking for. Mahoney's will not be our first choice. read more

My spirits needed boosting during the COVID-19 quarantine and my garden needed fertilizing. Mahoney's to the rescue! I placed a large order on the phone and simply pulled up and popped the trunk. Friendly crew loaded my supplies (I placed a cash tip in there for them) and off I went. Not as fun as browsing the aisles of blooms but definitely an uplifting experience. I've grew up right around the corner from this place and my mother went here all the time, I believe the ownership has changed since then but from what I remember she always had good relations with them. I went here the other day to purchase a bouquet for a friend that had a death in the family. When I got there and asked where I could go to get a bouquet, they acted like they had never heard the word before. I was directed to a woman who might help me, and again when I asked for a bouquet she didn't seem to understand. Finally she told me, in a slightly condescending tone, that they don't sell cut flowers there. It doesn't say that on their website so it's my fault for not realizing that, but if you have a giant nursery than I would kind of expect you would have some options for cut flowers. They weren't very helpful and wouldn't offer suggestions for where to go to get them. read more

Here's the scenario: my son and I went to Mahoney's in Concord today to check out some plants for our recently landscaped yard. We go to the check out to buy a couple of plants - there are two employees there. One is on the phone, the other is doing something else behind the register. A third employee is at another counter. I make eye contact with this person who tells me that the check out is where I am standing - where the two employees are. Neither the guy on the phone nor the lady behind the register look like they want to help me make my purchases.There are no other customers waiting in the check out area. I stand there waiting patiently with my son for one of the check out people to acknowledge that we are there ready to pay. Nothing. After a few minutes, a white male customer walks up to the check out, the female employee immediately drops what she is doing and helps ring him up - as she stares at me. As she is starting this transaction, another older female employee comes over and says that she will do the check out. At first I thought she meant that she will come help us check out using the other register. But no, she stands next to the female employee helping the white male customer and avoids eye contact with me. WTF! If the customer service staff couldn't be bothered to ring us up, then we can't be bothered to spend our money there as lovely as the plants may be. And even if it is not the company's intention to alienate non-white customers, they need to seriously give their staff some better customer service training! read more

Disappointed because their selection is broad but no exciting varieties available. However all plants looked healthy. Visited yesterday and saw lots of young kids stocking plants but hard to find anyone with gardening knowledge. Two downsides - they did not offer anything to protect car from dirt (which most garden centric stores do) and they do NOT accept DISCOVER! read more

This is an excellent garden center with a great range of plants, but I'm just so frustrated by my experience. We had a lovely, knowledgeable woman help us pick out some trees for our yard, and were told by two different people that it'd be about two weeks for delivery and installation. Seven and a half weeks later, we still have no trees, and no estimate on when they might arrive. Each time I call to check on the order, nobody knows anything about it, and when I finally spoke to the manager, she seemed angry that I was even asking. She said it'd be about four weeks for delivery because it's such a busy time of year. Fine, not the end of the world. But we're way past that now, and nobody will return my calls or tell me anything, and I really wish I'd gone someplace else for these trees. Such a disappointment. read more
