I am still young but Maid Rite is the best loose meat sandwich I have ever tried. I like their quaint little "No Tips" atmosphere and friendly service. I have tried most of their pies and can't turn down the Pineapple cake. Oh, and this is one of the only places that has a Marshmallow flavored shake. Awesome! As the Maid Rite is so good, I have not bothered with any other sandwich. Why mess with perfection! Prices are good (around 2.50 for a sandwich) and this place is quite packed for lunch. While visiting one of our plants in Quincy, my coworker took me to this local eatery. I was a bit hesitant about going somewhere where their main dish is called 'loose meat', but I compare it to a non-sloppy joe sandwich. Non-sloppy meaning there is not a tomato base in the sauce. Now, not being a local or knowing about Maidrite has me at a bit of a disadvantage. I do not know how these are suppose to taste or how it is ran, but as far as I could tell, this place was a great mom & pop restaurant. You come to these sorts of places to be taken back in time, not to be bothered with modern tendencies. This place is like stepping back in the 70's and getting a good, quick bite to eat. There is a 'no tips' policy here. I had to find that out the hard way... after I was about to leave money on the table and my coworker stopped me. They pay their people well enough not to tip, so hence, why no tipping (what a novel concept). The portions are perfect. You don't come here looking to have them roll you out. I mean, you could, but it's not what these types of places are made for. These are a quick bite to eat and back to work or home. Word to the wise: Do not get to-go food if you are not going to eat it within a few minutes. The base in the loose meat causes it to congeal into a big lard patty. My husband and I found this out when we ran up there to visit some friends at the plant, from St. Louis, and started going back to the family down there... bit into the sandwich and quickly spit it out. I was born in Quincy and my family, and my family's family used to eat here all the time. It truly is a Quincy tradition. Maid Rite is to Quincy as vinegar BBQ is to the Carolinas. You MUST come here and try a sandwich if you're in the area. It's got its original classic diner feel and the wait staff even still wears those nostalgic paper hats. I drove 14 hours from NC to visit family this week and before I go back home I'm absolutely making sure to stop by and pick up a maid rite before I leave the midwest. This is the best food I have ever eaten anywhere, you talk about a quincy original, this place is amazing. Ohhhh my god. This place has 4 stars? are you kidding me?? Well where do I begin? The service is terrible, they are not friendly at all and pretty much throws the burgers down on your table. The burgers are the worst burger/sandwich I have ever had in my life and I was practically gagging at the table. The burger came to the table not even warm. Do you know what happens to grease when it cools? it turns into a solid. Disgusting! The fries and onion rings were the ones you used to have in grade school, the fries with the ridges in them. The order of onion rings came to the table in a basket with only 5 onion rings and they are 1.5 in diameter. This place is horrible and I wish I could give it negative stars. read more

This place is an institution in this city. A Maid Rite is a seasoned loose ground beef sandwich and it is fantastic! I grew up two blocks away when the sandwiches were $0.17 each. You won't pay that now, but they are still worth it. Sorta diner style and they do not allow, never have allowed tipping. You gotta try it! read more

Food is good for the most part but customers practically have to beg for ketchup. Maid Rite is a Quincy tradition and has been featured on "Feasting on Asphalt" with Alton Brown from The Food Network. It typically takes awhile to get waited on here, and once someone helps you, 10 waitresses/waiters will offer to wait on you which is annoying. There is no tipping allowed which may be why the wait staff isn't very friendly. We actually took a friend here for the first time in Oct. and she refuses to come back because the waitress was so sarcastic and rude. read more

Maid Rite was one of the first franchised fast food chains, and this Quincy location is one of the oldest still in operation, if not THE oldest. The titular sandwich is like a sloppy joe without the sauce. Food from Maid Rite never tastes mass produced, and they have those awesome crinkle cut fries that you get at bowling alleys. This was my first taste of the infamous loose meat sandwich, and I'm definitely hooked. The restaurant itself is as old-school as can be (waitresses wearing old bonnets, sandwiches for $2, crinkle cut fries, etc) but that only adds to the goodness. I settled for the Mega with cheese, pickles and mustard (but probably should've gotten the super, as I was definitely craving more). No stars for the service, but when you have a craving, you have a craving. It took fifteen minutes to be waited on, and diners who arrived after us were able to place their orders before we did. I will admit not everyone will love this place, but it is either a home run or a dud for most people. I love the super maid rite with everything and the strip tenderloin with extra onion. Visited from out of town and I have to say - I wish more places like Maid Rite were still in existence! The restaurant has stayed in the same family (for what-almost 100 years?) - even when the neighboring hospital tried to buy the place to use as a parking lot. The value for the money is great! I had the standard Maid Rite sandwich and it was DELISH! Wish I had something like it here in Tennessee. They have a TONS of desserts - I tried the peanut butter pie (so light and fluffy) and my friend's seasonal strawberry pie, which were both awesome! They also have a bunch of thick shakes, too. Overall, I'd definitely say give it a try! It's a staple in the town, from my understanding, and it's not something you'll find in every neighborhood, like a McDonald's or a Wendy's. read more

I honestly don't get this place. It's legendary with locals, especially those who have moved away. They return to this place like lemmings. It's essentially cheap ground beef, unseasoned, just fried up in little crumbles and scooped onto a bun. They call it a "loose meat sandwich." I think they may be using the word "meat" loosely- maybe that's what they mean. You have to be 70 to be a waitress here, and huge signs on the wall proclaim- "NO TIPS!"
