It took me a while to write this post after my dog died under the care of Maikai Vet. Losing a pet is so heartbreaking as they are part of our family, they give us unconditional love, support and comfort. However, my last experience there was horrific. I've been going there for years up to now. Besides the fact that you have a scheduled appointment, but end up waiting at least an hour to be seen is a different story. That i can handle and that's not my complaint. My complaint is that the staff at Maikai Vet are so uncompassionate and rude especially when your pet has just died. I took my dog in for a scheduled surgery. I dropped him off at 8:00am and they called me throughout the day with updates. Well, at 6:30pm, they called me and told me to come and pick up my dog. Keana (she told me she was an intern) came out carrying my dog. I am unfamiliar with pet surgeries so i didn't think anything of it. My husband took our dog and was carrying him. I noticed that he had bubbles/foam coming out from his mouth. i asked to see Dr Mina and was told he was busy. i asked her if that foaming was normal. She told me yes and that it's from the anesthesia. Stupid me ... i accepted that excuse. She went over a whole bunch of medications with me. There were so many that i started to write things down so i don't get anything mixed up. She had the nerve to say "i don't know why you have to write it down, it's on the bottles". I know it was after hours but don't rush me especially with so many medications and which ones can't be taken with the other ones. Well, on the way home, my dog died. I was so heartbroken. I called the vet right away and they told me to bring him back to the clinic. So i did, by this time, it's 8:00pm. I was holding him in my arms, crying hysterically. No one, not a single person came out to tell me sorry or give me any kind of sympathy. They did ask me if i wanted to spend more time with my dog, i asked for a room and they told me i could sit in the waiting room with my dead dog. There were other people in the the waiting room.....why would i want to sit there holding my dead dog, crying and everyone watching me. I asked to speak to Dr Mina and was told that he's busy. Wait....it gets better.....i left my dog there, paid for cremation. They told me the cremation place will pick him up within that week. I waited 2 weeks to see if his ashes came back - they told me they have not received it back yet. I waited another week and called again. They told me his ashes has not come back yet. I asked who picked up my dog. They told me Sunset Pet Memorial. I called Sunset Pet Memorial, they guy there was so helpful and told me he has no record of my dog being picked up. I called Maikai back and told them Sunset does not have my dog. I demanded to know where my dog was. 2 hours later, i received a text message stating they are sorry, but my dog was not picked up as the tag fell off. How would the tag fall off? It's not like my dead dog was up walking around in the freezer. By this time my dog was in their freezer for 4 weeks. Does Maikai staff not check their freezer? Question why the same dog has been in there for 4 weeks? I finally got my dogs ashes after 5 weeks. I have not gotten any callbacks from Dr Mina, after leaving many messages for a call back. Nor did i get any sympathy from any staff there for leaving my dog in the freezer for 4 weeks. Instead i got excuses. There should be no excuse. I will not take any of my pets there again. read more

#1 Veterinary code of ethics is to do what you can to keep the animal comfortable and less stressed. This means allowing pets owner to be with and comfort a dying animal especially. I was denied that and my best friend and companion suffered over 5 hours in back without my loving attention. When I was allowed back. I was told "she was waiting for you..." then she died a horrible not peaceful by any means death as she struggled with every breath and her tongue flopped out in my hand before she was euthanized. Ive brought my dog to Maika'i vet many times and was very happy but my latest experiences with the vet have me very upset. When i brought my dog in to get his nails cut they asked me to leave him with them and i agreed when an hour went by and they didnt call me to pick him up i got concerned called the vet many times no answer went to the vet and the staff had left him in the office while they went to lunch unbelievable! my dog was screaming in the office with no one looking after him i was furious! When they finally returned they told me they did not cut his nails yet so i had to wait even longer i expressed my frustration with them and they gave me a small discount no apology! I should have took that as a sign to not bring my dog back there but i later made another appointment to get his teeth cleaned my dog is 2 years old and 18 pounds very small vet charges me over 1,300 dollars which seems ridiculous to me since he didn't need any extractions! moral of the story this vet doesn't care about your animals and just wants your money don't recommend and won't be back !! read more

Horrible communication skills. Rude and incompetent. (Who you hire in your place of business REFLECTS exactly what/who you are as a person.) Wish I would have investigated more in depth this Clinic. ************ I have layed out very clearly my concerns. I was ASSURED by Danniel 2x YOU personally Alfred Mina, were adopting my Pets And they would definitely be staying together and have a great home! You also had a fondness for Tortoises. I assumed I was being told truth and NOT being lied to. You did not adopt them!! Then your staff lied about it. They did not know - initially, then put me on hold for 20 minutes- to go ask someone. WHY did you refuse to return my phone calls? Why did Danniel refuse to return phone calls- A simple call to answer simple questions -would have been easy. When calling to check on the adjusting and well- being of my pets -SUPPOSEDLY WERE IN YOUR CARE. Was met with rudeness and ignorance by girl who answers phone. She informed me- they were given away- no idea whom. Don't inquire again. (After 20 min. wait on hold). I would NEVER have left them - without Assurance from Danniel- YOU were the one adopting them. Which she confirmed 2 times. If you THOUGHT I misunderstood... Seems - a Professional w/ compassion would have simply made a phone call. Now you are attempting to back peddle - invent excuses for YOUR actions, and those in your office. You should have contacted me and addressed my concerns, when I learned -I had been LIED to. Yes- I requested, if possible for them to returned. After learning of the deceit - I then researched experiences/reviews from others with your Office. Discovered others had experienced similar and worse, at your office as well. YES I did request to have them returned. You should have made the effort to call or answer the phone and explain if you were concerned about your reputation. You as Owner of this establishment- are responsible for your actions as well as those of your Staff. It reflects on you. I was considerate and respectful with your staff when calling to inquire of well-being of my pets. Was not given same in return. Has nothing to do with "getting my way", EVERYTHING to do with compassion of someone who is suppose to care for animals and possess a moral compass. You seem triggered for having been called out for actions.. Now respond? You could have.... or can still. opt to make a good faith move and - what transpired in your office, (to me and the many others that will read this post- of your Office and Practice) - If, you were to return my pets. I would edit my post that you moved in a direction to right a wrong. Correct a misunderstanding and the perception of what now stands. Huge for Public perception And Trust. Dr Mina is incredibly rabbit savvy! Ashley and all the rest of his staff are also so gentle and know how to handle rabbits. They're also very communicative and professional. I'm so glad I took my bun here for treatment with his tooth problem. He had been struggling for weeks, but this vet managed to save him and he's now eating again and back to himself. I had pretty much given up hope because he was so sick and thin, but now I'm beyond happy to have my friend back, thanks to Dr Mina. I'd recommend anyone with rabbits to come here for great quality care! read more

Having a very bad billing experience with people in Maika'i office. Was charged $860 dollars for my Chihuahua for aspirating some water while getting a drink. They quoted me $300 for emergency visit which I paid up front then they changed it to $500 before I could pick her up and added another $300 plus for blood test etc. To see if she injested poison toad or such. I tried to discuss this change of emergency quote with office staff and they became extremely arrogant and argumentative and called security on ME??? I am taking them to Small Claims Court tomorrow. read more

Dr.Mina has been there for me more times than I can count and I cannot express how grateful I am for him. From saving my dogs life back in 2007 to seeing my brothers dog in an emergency even though he was not a patient to giving me actual helpful advice for my pigs and horses I cannot even count how many times he was there for me. This past week I called his office after not going into the clinic for at least a few years. I had a dying 2 day old puppy and was desperate. They got back to me and told me to come in immediately - he told me the facts and that there may be nothing they could do to save him but he could give it his best shot. A nerve wracking 90 minutes passed by and my little puppy made it through anesthesia and back home with me. I know that being a veterinarian was his true calling and he does not receive the recognition he deserves. read more

I try to be sympathetic to veterinarians and have never left a bad review before... Vets are good people doing the best for animals. But, this has to be the worst veterinary hospital I have visited in my life. We brought our cat in for an emergency appointment and they were kind enough to take him in. The cat was coming out from a bad upper respiratory issue and has megacolon and our regular vet does not provide weekend care. So, we were looking for a new vet in Hilo instead of Waimea or Kona. But, the staff here did not take good notes for the first day he was admitted - they did not x-ray the upper half of the cat... the main reason for admitting him was respiratory distress. Then on second day they got the upper half x-rayed, but could not diagnose the issue with any certainty. The receptionist could not explain the blood work to us (neither did anyone else). They did not provide any antibiotic to the cat to ease any primary or secondary bacterial infection he may have had. Third day - they were going to cut our cat open to do exploratory laparotomy. All of this without a consultation/call with the actual doctor (he did not meet us or speak to us for the 3 days our cat was admitted in their care - we only ever spoke to receptionists and the vet technician on the last day). Never-ever has a doctor suggested emergency surgery for one of our pets without discussing it with us in person (why, how, and afterwards care). Plus an ultrasound should be the next diagnostic tool before surgery. Our cat has 6 other veterinary doctors (some of the best doctors/surgeons on Oahu before we moved here) - this is the only truly bad facility we have visited. The reception staff are plain incompetent - they have still not sent medical records over to our regular vet even after three weeks of asking them. We don't mind that it costed us $1,500 - we spend quite freely on our pet care and want the best for them and pet care is expensive. But, please stay away from this facility - they are not good at what they do. After being super polite and talking patiently to them for days - I reached the end of my patience when the lady on the phone admitted that they did not send out my records to the regular doctor and would not be able to do so in the next hour either! They won't email you the medical records - will only print them (what good is a print out, when I need copies of x-rays)? Truly next level incompetency. read more

My interactions with the staff I talked to over the phone were overall pleasant. I am also not a veterinarian, nor do I know what goes into the business aspects of running your own clinic. However, I am extremely disappointed that we were not able to be helped. We tried to take our parrot, who we had only been caring for for about a week, in for an emergency, but they said they could not help us because we had not previously established care here. We had not had time to set up a primary vet for her yet because she had been with us for such a short period of time. The gentleman I spoke to on the phone was polite and said he would ask his supervisor if they could make an exception to this rule, as her emergency was life threatening and time sensitive. He told me that the supervisor said there would be no exceptions and we could try to come in the next day at 8am. Our parrot died later that night. I still have no words for how we felt when we were told that our last veterinary option (we had exhausted all other possibilities) was turning us away, and then having to witness her death because no one would help us. Again, I don't understand all the ins and outs of running a vet clinic, but the primary reason we were given was that the system that they had would not allow us to be transferred to speak to the vet to come in for care because they did not have our information. What? Why can't you take our information manually? Why can't we be transferred manually? It doesn't make any sense. From a moral and ethical standpoint, turning someone's animal away when they are asking for help seems like the antithesis to the purpose of having a veterinary clinic. If this were a human hospital, you could not say the same, right? They are not able to turn anyone away with life threatening injuries or illness. But for an animal that hasn't been to this specific clinic before, we can't help you nor make any exceptions? Horrible behavior and quite frankly embarrassing. I hope no one else has to go through what we went through, and I hope that they start allowing exceptions to this rule. It could save an animal's life. read more

I am not the type to leave a bad review and always see the positive of it. I am understanding, considerate person. But Maikai vet is just not the place I will be going for a very long time. I called them around 1:30pm (coming back from my vacation) to see if I'm able to bring my dog in (which I know there will be a emergency fee which was $300 in order to see the doctor) no problem. As soon as I reached there, the ONLY receptionist that was there while checking in, straight attitude through out the whole time. Never felt welcomed in or even didn't have compassion that my dog was not doing well and needed to be seen. She asked the basics questions and what's going on with my dog. The one question that got me annoyed and had to repeatedly answer was "are you sure your dog is an inside dog" and "are you sure your dog never has touched the ground" (reason is because she has her parvo shot but puking out blood and runny dodo). I know your doing your job but it made me felt as if I'm not doing the right thing or as if I'm telling her the correct answer if that makes sense. So all in all, I've decided to cancel. But I told my other half to go in there and cancel it for me. I didn't want to deal with the negative energy or attitude. As soon as he cancel my other half came out and told me the same thing and she said "are you sure you going cancel there won't be an opening tomorrow and can't help you and wait for another opening" Into conclusion, never again will be going there. Bad customer service and staff. Do better. If you work at a vet you should care for other peoples animals and there animals parents(humans). Have some sympathy, if a person is coming in for a EMERGENCY. And paying $300 UPFRONT. To the girl with tattoos and fake eyelashes hair up in a tida bun with an attitude, I don't appreciate what you did by giving me attitude for no reason. If I'm coming in for an emergency for my dog have some respect because not only I'm paying $300 upfront just to see a doctor but have some consideration that my dog isn't doing well. Terrible customer service, they have some super weird policies about releasing pets medical records, and if you can convince them to release the records they charge you 25 cents a page like you didn't spend hundreds of dollars getting care from them in the first place. We brought our senior little dog in on an emergency , she had a broken hind leg . Dr. Mina was the ONLY vet that took her in to check her out , NOT even her usual vet would take her @ HPP she stayed with her leg hanging for a couple of days ! While we called every vet to see if they could help her . He was able to save her leg and because my elderly parents could not handle taking care of her and keeping her stable at home Maka'i Vet kept her in their care for a month - till her leg was mostly healed and cast came off . Their staff was wonderful & even tho' over worked into long after hours they were still friendly ! We really appreciated them all! We need more vet Dr's like Dr. Mina on the Big Island . ! read more

Zero stars. Dr.Mina may once have cared for the lives of animals, but the business portion of his practice I believe has now devoured that passion, and allowed a sacrifice of multiple lives. If your animal is your family. Don't take them here, fight and beg for Kīlauea to get you in or Pāhoa. I am not really a person to leave a negative review but this time I need to and don't want to even put one star. I actually never had a chance to talk to Dr. Mina but had terrible experiences with his staff, rude attitude, was not supportive at all, had no clear communication, they never answer the phone. I took my bunny, she has a digestive problem getting skinnier weaker, and has no energy at all. she was returned 2 times they said she was normal, but maybe needs more protein. I was begging and explaining many times she is dying. 3rd time they finally took her and actually gave her subcutaneous fluid. she spent 2 nights but was never told what the actual cause was and the next day we were supposed o pick her up, no one updated anything to us or texted or called even though my family waited and waited for what is going on with our pet. The day after, a person said the bunny was fine last night but found her dead this morning. Nothing at this point will bring our beloved bunny back home but we still don't know how to process this. I sent a long email to their manager but I received a non-apological email back and she even stated that it was my misunderstanding, not their fault. What is wrong with this office? I hope no one will experience the same thing at this office. I would never ever take any of my pets here again. read more

Doctor Mina saying that I was banned since 2019 is another lie. They saw my Dog Gryphon 9 months ago. Doctor Mina tried to have me arrested for "Theft of services" because I am disputing the charges. He also sent DFS and DHS to my house to investigate me and my family. I refuse to pay for services that were not performed. They kept my dog in a crate and never treated her, and claimed he "thinks" or "maybe" she has this or that and demanded to keep my dog. He did not know what the issue was and was guessing. They refused to send over the bloodwork, X-Rays, and notes on my dog's case causing the other veterinarians to redo all of her workups. The notes that his office finally sent were all about me and not about my dog. This man is a menace to animals and our community. He had a class action lawsuit against him for sexual harassment by EIGHT employees. (Hawaii Tribune-Herald). The East Hawaii Veterinary Center has agreed to pay $101,000 to settle a federal sexual harassment case filed on behalf of eight employees. Last September, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charged the clinic with creating what it called a "hostile work environment" because of sexual and gender based harassment from veterinarian Dr. Alfred Mina. On Tuesday, the EEOC announced that the East Hawaii Veterinary Center has agreed to enter a 2 1/2 year settlement in which it agreed to revise its existing policies and complaint procedures, and to hire an equal opportunity consultant to help employees with their complaints. read more

Office staff wants this place to close, it's the only reasonable explanation for how long time customers are treated. Called every day for weeks leaving messages, never received a call back. Finally just went in but they are like the only place in Hilo that requires entry with a mask these days but they don't have any if people don't have one on hand. Which would be courteous since it isn't mandated anymore and it's personal choice at this point. Finally let my husband come in with his shirt over his face. Made the appointment and when he explained that we had been calling and no one picked up or returned calls it was like talking to a brick wall. Zero f's given. Got the appointment scheduled for routine heartworm testing. While my husband was in the waiting room with one of our dogs a guy came in with the exact same story- calling everyday for weeks, left messages and never got a call back- he got the same response, blank stares and shrugged shoulders. Gave the feedback in an after case survey and was told to leave the practice and how to get our dogs' medical records. They really don't want your business or my business. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! The staff is unprofessional, disorganized, and extremely rude. We stopped coming to this clinic months ago because I felt that my dog was not getting the attention and care he needed. It felt like they were just going through the motions without actually getting to know anything about my dog and his health needs. Fast forward and it has been 5 months since I requested his medical records to be sent to his new vet and they still are not there. I went in the office myself and they would still not release his records to me (owner). The person I spoke to told me that I could not come back to pick them up until they call me (which they have said the past 5 months during other attempts). And then I mentioned that this is why we stopped coming and she sarcastically said "bye" to get me out of the office. I don't leave negative reviews, but the way this staff treats people and pets is deplorable, which is probably why they are hiring for all positions right now. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE After i called to make an appointment TIA asked if i could have my dogs papers faxed over from my primary vet. And i asked her when the soonest she could make an appointment... so that it wouldn't be a waste of my time, my vets time, and their time. She REFUSED to let me know the soonest appointment until after i had the papers faxed. So i had the papers faxed. And guess what, she didn't have an opening available that week. If TIA had been kind and had any level of good common sense, she'd not disrespect everyone's time in this situation. Tia expressed zero compassion and after i thanked her for wasting my time, she immediately said with pure ego satisfaction that she is refusing service to me. If you want people who are compassionate, caring, cordial, and polite, go to Aloha Veterinary. Or if you like people to be rude and waste your time entirely, call Tia from Maikai Vet. read more

My husband and I moved here from Los Angeles we got the direct release for our two chihuahuas. We planned and started the paperwork 6 months before we made the move. First thing I did was look for a vet. I didn't wait until my dogs were sick. I tried one and wasn't happy so I tried this place next. I am happy to report this is our vet. Every one is awesome ! Place is very clean and I liked the vets I saw. I am very happy I found this veteran clinic for my dogs, they are my world they always get the best! And they get the best care h Thank you! read more

The owner is the meanest person I have ever met . His receptionist was yelling at me and another customer . She had us in tears . We remained calm , soft spoken and peaceful . When I returned later to pick up the cat the owner came Out and backed up his receptionist as she stood there with her fists up mocking me by saying "oh ya sure you were talking nice ." I was completely harassed by both the receptionist and the owner when I wanted to and tried my hardest to avoid a conflict . Then after that they banned me . They refused to see my animals . Dr. Lyons, Dr. Mina, and the staff at Maika'i Vet are compassionate, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. They were able to accommodate my pregnant bunny and I for a last minute appointment on a very busy Saturday in the clinic. People and their pets were constantly coming and going, and the entire clinic handled everyone with patience into the evening. Dr. Lyons performed an emergency C-section, took time to explain everything to me even though it was late and well past dinner time, and followed up the next day. Dr. Mina even shared some info with me; he is an encyclopedia on rabbits. Dr. Lyons saved my pet, and I will be forever grateful. It's obvious that the doctors and staff are passionate about animals and I highly recommend Maika'i Veterinary Clinic. read more

So the quality has dropped significantly since my first couple visits over a month ago. I took my dog in to get vaccinated once. And also took my dog a second time to receive a health certificate to take him back to the main land. Unfortunately had an employee at Petco sell me the wrong sized kennel so couldn't catch my original flight. I try to schedule a new appointment with the vet and they originally tell me they can't find me on file. And I told her I've been there before but even if that wasn't the case I asked why she couldn't simply schedule me an appointment. She said it's because they're busy and want to make appointments for their returning customers. And after she finally found me in the database she said they're still fully booked. And the doctor who helped me a month ago was no longer working there. She also suggested I call her at her new office because they couldn't help me. What a joke. After taking hundreds of dollars from me this is how they treat a returning customer. I can see why the original doctor left. Old lady on the phone with an attitude please be better. You're there to help customers. Not argue or question. And now I've called other vet offices in the area and they aren't taking new clients or are booked for over a month but atleast took my number down in case someone cancelled or a spot opened. Not this office no. Since the doctor that helped me a month ago was no longer working there they were no longer able to help me. So even if you're a returning customer your money is no good. So anyone reading this save your hard earned money and spend it at any other vet office than this one. read more

Third try with this dog of a vet clinic. The front staff lies and is very rude. The waiting room has furniture that says to keep the dogs off. The wait times are measured in hours and they constantly ask you to update your information while your dogs are waiting. The vet was not kind, caring or considerate. What can I say, years ago a baby kitten happened onto our property and had a bum foot, it took a few days to catch her; but when we did, she was a very pretty kitty and kinda friendly. We ended up taking her to Maikaì vet clinic in Hilo, they ended up amputated her bum front leg, dewormed, and de-flea'd her and gave her shots, saving her life. She turned out to be one of the best cats ever. Worth the $600 charge! Well Now, one of our older cats wasn't looking to good, moving slow and having her jaw hanging open, we weren't sure what was wrong. We took her to Maikaì vet hospital to have her checked out to find out what was wrong with her. Over the phone they said they could squeeze her in, office visit was $47.50 to check her out! When my wife got there at 1:00pm, for a 1:30 appointment, they were busy and said to drop her off and come back between 4:30-4:45. My wife asked why it was a drop off since they gave us a time to bring our cat in when we called that morning? Originally they said they would squeeze her in to check her out. No one had a good answer, so Dr. Mina came out to explain, saying because they had a full schedule, he would see her when he had time. So my wife left to run some errands while in town waiting for our cat. She returned at 4:15pm and they never even looked at out cat till after 5:pm. They couldn't find anything wrong, no abscess in her mouth, or bad teeth. So they took some blood to test, and said it came back normal. Then handed my wife a bill for $275. Again, no one had any good answers as to why the bill was much, also giving a bit of an attitude. My wife thanked them for taking the time to see our cat; but didn't understand the drop off from a scheduled appointment , nor the high bill for office visit and blood testing. He said since they were busy the office visit was $79 and other fees came out to $275. Wonder if they were charging for the attitude as well. Also wonder how Dr. Mina would feel if someone treated his wife like that!! Very unprofessional and upsetting with them treating my wife like they did her a huge favor for finding nothing wrong with out cat. When called first thing this morning, they could have explained needing to do a drop off, and what the charges would be, or why they would change from what was said. The staff needs training as how to run a veterinarian office, understand procedures, scheduling and explaining office visit, cost and being professionals while doing their jobs. As far as I'm concerned, I don't want my wife using Maikaì vet hospital again. They're lucky I don't give them a piece of my mind, treating my wife like they did, especially during these covid days we all are dealing with. We brought our dog and adopted cat here. Love Dr. Lyons. Great bed side manner. Today we brought our new puppy here. They asked for my daughter's social security number and I said no. There is no reason for that level of identification needed for pet care. When I asked if they shred the paperwork or have encrypted computers, the receptionist went in the back. Dr. Mina came out and told us no can do, get out. When I called the pet store, even they were shocked at the treatment. We are customers, and I won't bring any of our five cats or two dogs back. read more

Minah is a egotistical money hungry man. I had 2 dogs killed by him and his other female vet. I took my dogs on different occasions. My first dog came in for a hurt leg. I left him there because they told me they were keep him on watch alert. They called me so I can pick him up and told me that the x rays did show a break. I never saw the x-rays but I trusted him. BIG MISTAKE. When I got home I got him out of my car and walked him to his bed, and as I was helping him lay, he collapse and died. It broke my heart and didn't want to deal with Minah. 2nd dog Three years later; I took him because he was a bit sluggish and they told me they were gonna give him fluids and do some blood test and x rays. They called me 3 hours later to come pick him up. The X-ray and bloodwork came in normal. That he might it been something he ate. So when I get there they put me in a room and told me they were gonna bring him to me. A few minutes late the female vet came in and told me my dog had just died. Didn't know why and became very egotistical tell me I should of know what was wrong since he was my dog. Then told me I needed to pay the bill. And if I wanted them to cremate him it would be $500.00 more added to the bill which was over $400.00 for fluids and testing. And if I didn't pay they were not gonna release his body to me. I had to pay so I could take my buddy back home and bury him in our property. The way they handled it was so evil all they care about was money. I found an injured bird that no one would help me with since it was not a native species. The first person that was actually willing to take it in was Dr Mina. While trying to figure out what to do with the bird, several others told me Dr Mina had previously taken in injured turtles, chameleons, etc. In the end I didn't bring it to his practice since I eventually found another bird rehabilitation facility. But I was certainly very thankful that Dr Mina offered. Mahalo ! read more

It's a Sunday morning. My cat has badly injured his back leg, perhaps broken. And is crying in pain. My veterinarian is not reachable. I'm calling to find an emergency vet and they are open 7 days a week. NOT! The gal who answered said, since they don't do on call for my vet, they can't help me. They could be the best Vet service in the world, but if they aren't going to see a badly injured animal, what kind of people are they? How on earth would they ever expect me to want to become a client? No aloha here! read more

Terrible people skills! Jeremy, the "manager", is a total ass, only repeating himself with a smarmy look on his face while he tells you their "policies". I took my cat to them, and met Dr. Ortega, she was awesome. She let me in the examination room and talked to me like a human. My cat has less than 30% kidney function, and needs subcutaneous fluids. She wrote me a prescription so I could do it at home. I bought a bag of kidney cat food for $30, but he wouldn't eat it. It says that your cat will like it, or your money back. I took it back and was told I needed my "original receipt". I explained that I couldn't find it, I thought that I had left it in my car and husband cleaned the car out since then, they told me so sorry, it's our policy. I asked them if they had a copy of my receipt and they said yes, I asked Jeremy, why isn't that good enough? He gave me that crappy, robot smile and response, "because it's our policy". I tried for several minutes to get them to see logic, and they all agreed that they knew I had bought the food from them, but "it is our policy" is all they could keep repeating. All them time with their fake smiles and robotic tones. So I asked for my animal's records and had to PAY FOR THEM, and told them I would go see another vet. Dr. Ortega has told me my cat needed another test to see if he was improving, so I called Makai to get him tested. They told me that I could not bring him back because I had requested his records. Of course when I asked why can't I just finish the tests with Dr. Ortega, I was told in the same robotic way, "because you requested your records". Over and over. I asked to speak with someone over her, NOT Jeremy, she said there is a female manager there that I could speak to. A man comes in the phone, it's Jeremy! So she lied to me about a female manager, or Jeremy lied because he said there is no female manager. When I asked why I can't finish the tests with Dr. Ortega, he told me "because it's their policy". I asked him, so I can never come back there with any animal, I'm banned? He said "that's our policy". So I guess if you want another opinion from another vet, and ask for your records, they will ban you from coming back. I told Jeremy that this is why they have a 2.5 star rating on Yelp, and that it is going lower now. He robotically informed me that "that is your opinion", and that since I was now threatening him the call was ended and to "have a nice day". I told him "eff you" and hung up on him smarmy face. Do not go to this vet, no aloha, no compassion except for Dr. Ortega, whom I hope finds another, better place to work soon!! My cat had to be put to sleep today, 9/16/19. Find Dr. Lei, she is awesome and very sweet and caring. I would recommend her over these people every day! read more

Yesterday I made a very sad decision that my senior dog needed to be euthanized when he could not move his back legs anymore. He was on chronic pain. I arrived there after calling for an emergency appt. I expected To have to wait until a vet was available. Instead I was told to leave him and drop him off so they could put him in a cage in the back for IV fluids and pain meds all day and check in at the end of the day! Treating the symptoms for one day was not going to relieve him of his daily pain. I explained that I did not want him to spend his last day in a kennel. They had me sit in the waiting room with him and an IV bag and told me I would be holding the IV bag all day. After a few hours they put me in a private room. I finally got them to stop my dogs suffering after about four hours. But just before euthanizing him they told Me that I had a choice of $850 individual cremation or a $550 group cremation with no ashes back. They said if I could not afford either of those I could take his body with me. Most vets have a respectful way that they dispose of pets bodies. I could not afford either and complained of the price. Today I called around and found that another vet only charges $350, the same price as a local pet cremation place. The cremation place said that they do the cremations for all of the vets clinics. Makai'i Vets are marking up their cremation services by $500 and taking advantage of grief stricken clients at their most vulnerable times. They have you as a captured audience with an IV in your dogs leg and then pressure you to make an expensive and last minute and unexpected decision. There was very little compassion in treating grieving customers by over charging for the cremation by $500. They did not tell me about the local pet cremation center as an option either. read more

I will NEVER return this vet!! We brought our puppy in earlier this week cause he was throwing up and had the runs. They told me to bring him the next day, which we did. We had to drop him off at 9am and kept him the entire day. Upon pick up, the tech brought him out and didnt give any information. I had to ask what was wrong with him. He had hook worms and a parasite. When asking questions, I was told they didnt know and the dr was in a room. They said this is his meds which was a worm med and a antibiotic. I had to ask when does he get the meds and how often. I told them he has an appt to be fixed on a few days is his meds going to interfere with that appt, they told me no. Today, we brought him back for his surgery. I told them the only thing I wanted was an iv for him. Anything else they needed to contact me before doing. I told the tech that took him in, please make sure he has a cone so he doesnt lick his stitches. She said ok. Well we go to pick him up and I'm charged for microchipping which I didnt agree to and asked a few questions and received no answers. They brought out our puppy with no cone and minimal instruction. I asked them where the cone they said well you didnt pay for it. If you want a cone you have to pay for it. I said I dont gove a shit if o have to pay for it, I want the cone. So she looks at me and says with attitude, well what size? I looked at her and said, I dont know considering I don't know what size you have. I then told her it would have been really helpful if you guys would have put the cone on him like I requested. Her reply was well, I didnt check in and it's not on the instructions. WTF??? All she could say is it's not her fault??? If you choose to bring your pet there, please make sure you ask all your questions and persist till you get your answers. Better yet, take your pet to another vet. Cause this one sucks in communication and attitude! read more
