Dr Alan has been my ohana's vet since his dad was practicing with my grandparents.. On the night of the 28th my dog was clipped by a car right outside of our home...he answered my emergency call and was able to see my Lilly that night..thankfully she is alive and doing better...he has also personally checked up on her these past few days along with his staff.. Will always be a loyal patient of Dr. Alan's

He looooves going to the vet!

Although Dr. Nagakura is not my pets' primary veterinarian, he does cover for Dr. Castro's emergency cases, should he be out of town. On a couple of occasions now, I've had to bring a little fur baby in for care at a moment's notice. Whether it be a broken leg or a little bit of stoppage, I felt that my pets got very good care every time. The staff was very accommodating and Dr. Nagakura was helpful and informative. If you're looking for a new vet or are unsure about being referred to The Pet Hospital, I'd not hesitate to give them a try. The Pet Hospital is located right off of Kanoelehua Avenue and is the last turn before you hit the road to the airport. Sidenote: The also carry prescription dog and cat food, should you need it!

The almost cup of fluid removed from a chihuahua's chest cavity

Took our chihuahua here for routine teeth cleaning in April 2021. She fell ill the day after we brought her home. After two more visits to diagnosis her illness and bags of medicine to treat all types of guessed at illnesses a second vet on emergency call rushed her to immediate surgery for liver failure and collapsed lung using the 3 day old blood work and x-rays from " the pet hospital". Removed almost a cup of fluid in her chest cavity and tossed all but 1 prescription from this "vet" at the pet hospital. The new vet targeted the treatment towards the now two weeks old liver problems but it was too late. Our chihuahua passed away on May 15th from liver failure. This vet didn't have a clue of how to diagnose much less treat our baby. There will be plenty more coming about this place. Beware if you care for your animals.

Losing a pet…read moreis so heartbreaking as they are part of our family, they give us unconditional love, support and comfort. However, my last experience there was horrific. I've been going there for years up to now. Besides the fact that you have a scheduled appointment, but end up waiting at least an hour to be seen is a different story. That i can handle and that's not my complaint. My complaint is that the staff at Maikai Vet are so uncompassionate and rude especially when your pet has just died. I took my dog in for a scheduled surgery. I dropped him off at 8:00am and they called me throughout the day with updates. Well, at 6:30pm, they called me and told me to come and pick up my dog. Keana (she told me she was an intern) came out carrying my dog. I am unfamiliar with pet surgeries so i didn't think anything of it. My husband took our dog and was carrying him. I noticed that he had bubbles/foam coming out from his mouth. i asked to see Dr Mina and was told he was busy. i asked her if that foaming was normal. She told me yes and that it's from the anesthesia. Stupid me ... i accepted that excuse. She went over a whole bunch of medications with me. There were so many that i started to write things down so i don't get anything mixed up. She had the nerve to say "i don't know why you have to write it down, it's on the bottles". I know it was after hours but don't rush me especially with so many medications and which ones can't be taken with the other ones. Well, on the way home, my dog died. I was so heartbroken. I called the vet right away and they told me to bring him back to the clinic. So i did, by this time, it's 8:00pm. I was holding him in my arms, crying hysterically. No one, not a single person came out to tell me sorry or give me any kind of sympathy. They did ask me if i wanted to spend more time with my dog, i asked for a room and they told me i could sit in the waiting room with my dead dog. There were other people in the the waiting room.....why would i want to sit there holding my dead dog, crying and everyone watching me. I asked to speak to Dr Mina and was told that he's busy. Wait....it gets better.....i left my dog there, paid for cremation. They told me the cremation place will pick him up within that week. I waited 2 weeks to see if his ashes came back - they told me they have not received it back yet. I waited another week and called again. They told me his ashes has not come back yet. I asked who picked up my dog. They told me Sunset Pet Memorial. I called Sunset Pet Memorial, they guy there was so helpful and told me he has no record of my dog being picked up. I called Maikai back and told them Sunset does not have my dog. I demanded to know where my dog was. 2 hours later, i received a text message stating they are sorry, but my dog was not picked up as the tag fell off. How would the tag fall off? It's not like my dead dog was up walking around in the freezer. By this time my dog was in their freezer for 4 weeks. Does Maikai staff not check their freezer? Question why the same dog has been in there for 4 weeks? I finally got my dogs ashes after 5 weeks. I have not gotten any callbacks from Dr Mina, after leaving many messages for a call back. Nor did i get any sympathy from any staff there for leaving my dog in the freezer for 4 weeks. Instead i got excuses. There should be no excuse. I will not take any of my pets there again.

Dr. Lyons is incredibly sweet and supportive--she always puts us at ease during visits. The vet tech is amazing too; they never forget us and always greet us like old friends. One of the best decisions I made was establishing care early on. It's the peace of mind knowing that when something comes up, we already had a trusted team ready to go. The location and the parking lot has easy access too. There's no 24/7 vet care on the Big Island, which is something I wish we had, but knowing I have a solid daytime team ready to go makes a huge difference.

Ask if they could get a blood test to maybe rule out pancreatic problem. By now it was nearing 2 PM. I told her I did not think it was pancreatic. My dog showed no symptoms of pain. and , of course, by this time I am beginning to think they just want to run up my bill. I never got to see the vet. and I ended up paying $78 for a fecal smear WOW! When Scooby bit a cane toad in the middle of the night, Dr. Castro met me at his office and stayed for hours to administer medicine and monitor Scooby's recovery. Those two years of the disease developing without treatment was devastating to my dog.
