My fur baby wasn't doing so well, and they took her right away. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with cancer, and they can't do much except keep her comfortable. One of their employees (not sure of her role/title) texts every few days to see how my girl is doing. On a couple of occasions now, I've had to bring a little fur baby in for care at a moment's notice. Whether it be a broken leg or a little bit of stoppage, I felt that my pets got very good care every time. The staff was very accommodating and Dr. Nagakura was helpful and informative. I'm not one to usually right reviews but with the way I was treated today and huge lack of customer service from Chevelle, I felt I needed to. I called to set up an appointment to get my dogs skin cancer removed. Chevelle who answered the phone, was very rude about making an appointment. She claimed that I needed to go and see Dr. Groom @Pahoa vet. I disagreed as I've been bringing my pet into the Hilo hospital. I asked to speak with a manager and she claimed they just "stepped out". I said ok, I'll call back later and she said "no don't do that. Someone will call you back by the end of the day". They are now closed and no call back to me. Took our chihuahua here for routine teeth cleaning in April 2021. She fell ill the day after we brought her home. After two more visits to diagnosis her illness and bags of medicine to treat all types of guessed at illnesses a second vet on emergency call rushed her to immediate surgery for liver failure and collapsed lung using the 3 day old blood work and x-rays from " the pet hospital". Removed almost a cup of fluid in her chest cavity and tossed all but 1 prescription from this "vet" at the pet hospital. The new vet targeted the treatment towards the now two weeks old liver problems but it was too late. Our chihuahua passed away on May 15th from liver failure. This vet didn't have a clue of how to diagnose much less treat our baby. There will be plenty more coming about this place. Beware if you care for your animals. read more

Do not take your pet here... I sent my daughter to take our dying dog there for emergency and they wouldn't see my dog without our ID and 500 cash for a deposit. My daughter gave them 300 and a picture of our ID and instructed them that we were on our way to pay the balance and they still would not see my dog. Sadly that same day our family dog died and all they had to say was sorry. The Pet Hospital cares more about money than they do their patients. I've been coming to The Pet Hospital for over a year. I missed an appointment in July and I paid the $41.67 no show fee. Even though my bank shows the check was delivered and cleared, they can't find it because their office manager is out of office. Because of the $41.67 not showing paid in their system, my account is inactive, and there is no one in the office who can activate it. They won't create a new account for me because they don't show payment! So, I can't bring my dog in who is showing severe issues with a large lump on his chest that is sensitive to touch. So, while he suffers, they don't care - "Go to another vet" is their answer since I can't wait until next week for their staff to resolve the problem. For $41.67? Good-bye Pet Hospital. I loved the service a couple years ago. My dog had the same problem, an ear infection and they took care of him that day, cleaned and flushed his ears and he was good to go. Dr. Alan came out and spoke with me. It was great! I asked for the same procedure this time, and made an appt. for it a week ahead of time. At first, I was very impressed with how they met you outside to protect from covid but now I feel it is just a way to separate you from speaking with Dr. Alan to get a good idea of what's going on. He was so great about that on my last visit. My dog was in and out in less than 1/2 an hour with no flushing or care except I was told by a handler he had an ear infection (duh!). I was handed 2 meds and then told how to do it myself with a $173.00 bill more than double the last time. To say the least, I was extremely disappointed. Even Petco, Downtown dogs, etc has much better, caring help than the Pet Hospital does now. Don't know what's happened to them but they don't seem to have the caring attitude they previously had. read more

Do not trust this vet. I'm writing this because I don't want others to experience what we did. Our dog had a tumor that came and went. When we took him in to be checked out, he told us to leave it. We took him to another vet who recommended removal and it turned out to be a life-threatening tumor. On another visit, they vaccinated both of our dogs without discussing it with us. The vaccine turns out to be something that can aggravate mast cell tumors which it the type of cancer our dog has. He is our baby and I wish that we never trusted this place. He may have had a better chance of recovery. read more

The absolute most unprofessional clinic I have ever been to in Hilo. We made our appointment over a week ago Our appointment was scheduled for 2 pm today. Got there at 145 pm. You must call or tex when you arrive We called immediately only to be informed we were considered a walk in they said the another person made the first 2 o'clock appointment and would come and check is in 1 hour 15 minutes later we were still sitting in our hot car. We called again and were informed they were doing their best. Would be out to check us in 15 minutes later still no contact. Very unprofessional. We had other thing to do. So no vet visit. Today was my third time at the Pet Hospital. I HIGHLY recommend this place! I don't give out many 5 stars, but this place deserves it! From the front desk workers to the Veterinarian's wife! Nikki is amazing as a Vet Tech! She is HIGHLY seasoned and has A LOT of information, especially if you can't afford to see the veterinarian. She has great suggestions that really helped my pooch out! The ladies in the front (Amanda and Denise) are really sweet and friendly! And even the veterinarian'a wife was really welcoming too! I really appreciate the work there and the kindness they exude! When calling I spoke with a Mimi (oriental lady) I told her that my dogs leg was fractured. She said it's going to be $75 walk in fee mind you they close soon. For me money wasn't an issue I just wanted my baby to feel better. She asked about my regular vet and asked why I didn't call or went there, well it's like 7pm and they were the only place open. She said come now of which I did roll up in the parking lot. Stayed by the door for an easy 20 mins before being recognized. One nurse was helping another person and they literally called that lady to tell us to move back so she could walk up to the window. COVID 19 had them communicate through a jealousy window. After that lady left then I was asked what I was here for I mentioned that I was told to come now and straight off the bat it would be $75. She said no no no it's $175 I told her that I just called and that's what I was told. She turns around and tells me yah it was me that you spoke with. At this point I'm pissed, so of course I raised my voice and she tells I can go and call my vet. I'm so glad that I didn't leave my baby there who would of known what they would of done! read more

Finally, after years of skin allergies, we got lab/shitzu, Kui, and lab, Joi, cured of skin allergies. The dogs had also been seen, by the Makawao Veterinary Clinic, in upcountry Maui. I do caution you on this though, twice, someone has denied my requests, for trifexis/heartworm from online 1800 Pet Meds.com. In reality, both times, my dogs have already had their yearly heart worm test. Also, after spending hundreds of dollars there, I called on a Monday, when Joi had 2, red ear, raging, earaches. The receptionist I spoke to on the phone, didn't even know who Joi was. I was put on hold forever... I hung up, drove straight down there , read them the riot act, and Joi was seen, that morning. I was charged an extra $100, for not having an an appointment. The person who did talk to me, on the phone, did apologize. Also, Joi runs away, every chance she gets...I am disabled. Twice, I have had happy endings, through the Pet Hospital, when the people that have found her, have taken her there. Joi has a microchip. Also, I suggest using the Asian vet only, He is very loving with the pets, and does know his veterinary medicine. Sorry, I forgot his name. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. Our sweet Doxie was attacked by a Pitt bull today at the park and we called to see if we could bring her in as we were driving to find a vet. It was an absolute emergency. I'm thankful I called ahead because I never imagined if you had a life and death situation and needed emergency care that you would be turned away, but we were. I was told they didn't have time to see her and also since she was not a current patient of theirs, that they would not help her! We would have lost extremely precious time had we gone to their location and were told no. They made it very clear that we could just let our sweet pet die in our arms rather than them help her. I was so appalled. Why would you be a vet if helping animals is not your number one priority??? The next vet we tried calling was closed, and then the next said they would be waiting as we walked in the door, and they were. Our regular vet is a mobile vet, and was not in the area, so she was not an option. Our baby is sleeping in my lap right now while she is in recovery and we are staying with her as long as we are allowed and as long as she survives the night, we will be back with her when they allow us to be with her in the morning. If it were up to this vet, our sweet baby would not be here in my arms right now. Update: I've been trying to reach the vet of this clinic to see if he is aware of this whole situation or if this particular employee is to blame. I just want to know if it truly is their policy to turn emergencies away when there is a vet available and not already in a surgery. When I call, I get this same lady that turned us away. She states that she is the boss and ultimate authority of the business. She has refused to let us speak to anyone other than her. We plan on stopping in just to make sure the vet of this hospital is aware of what happened. I'm hoping the problem is just this woman and not the whole business. read more

I love Dr Nagakura but I'm considering finding another vet. The head receptionist Desiree is atrocious, uncaring of pets/conditions/urgency and beyond unpleasant in demeanor always - and yes she's always there bossing the front desk and the phone. She used to be so nice. I have compassion for people going through things & being grouchy but it's been too long and now it has come time to say unacceptable/goodbye. The afterhour service, the doctors, the techs, the other receptionists including Mrs Nagakura are very nice. Very sad. Most of all, sad for my dogs who can't receive adequate emergency care from their main vet because of one person. read more

I stopped in to the Pet Hospital today before noontime to pick up a bag of ZD Dog Food for one of our dogs. We are longtime clients of Dr. Alan, and one of our dogs requires this food. I picked up a large bag of it from the shelf, and brought it over to the counter where the office manager was. She never even said hello to me, and left me standing at the counter, then proceeded to leave the room, and never came back. Can u believe this? Another person was waiting in the room, and commented to me about this rude behavior. I waited a few minutes at the front desk, and then another girl came out of the back room. I asked her if she would ring up the dog food for me, and she did. No problem. This so-called office manager has a horrible, snotty personality, and shouldn't be working in the front with the public. Love Dr. Alan, can't stand this girl, she's got to go! Will tell the vet when I come in next time. read more

Our cat of over 10 years fell ill suddenly. We have been taking him to Dr. Alan for treatment as we really thought our fleck would get better...no such luck. Dr. Alan and staff were always very nice to our family and especially to fleck. Just this past Tuesday, fleck was extremely ill and we knew that he would not be able to make it through the night. We called the Pet Hospital 24 hour emergency number at 8:30 pm and Dr. Alan called us back within five minutes. He met my husband and fleck down at the hospital after hours, within 30 minutes of the initial phone call. Dr. Alan made such a difficult situation very comforting for our family and we are so glad that our fleck in no longer suffering. Thank you Dr. Alan and staff!! read more

During the lava evacuation I took my small Chihuahua to someone to watch since I had my two big dogs with me I did not want her getting smashed. A month later when I got her back she was practically dead . She would not move eat or drink. I had just purchased her two weeks prior to that so she had not been to the vet or anything. When I got her back almost dead I dropped her off at the pet hospital no appointment no nothing just dropped her off for them to look at her as soon as they could. We had no idea what was wrong with her they had to run all kinds a test and they found out she had gotten Hurt internally somehow and ended up with an autoimmune disorder. That meant her body was trying to heal itself but her body was also fighting its own self. Her blood count was super low she was borderline of dying. Dr. Alan is the best! He is an excellent veterinarian and a very caring one. He's given superior care to three of our dogs over the years. We highly recommend him, but be aware that sometimes the front desk is manned by a rather abrupt person. This is why one star is missing from the rating. I adopted a dog from a local rescue group a couple years ago. The dog recently got sick. When I first got her she had stitches and I was sent to The Pet Hospital to have them removed. Evidently, this was her vet from previous owner. I called them since I figured they would have a record of health for her and tried to get an appointment. The receptionist was rude, didn't assist in trying to understand that I was calling them for the benefit of the animal (hoping they would have previous knowledge of her health etc.) They refused to give me an appointment, to even service us and then I was hung up on. I will never refer anyone to them and I will never step foot in this business... Tooo Bad, soooo sad, Hilo is a small place.. Get some manners, compassion, retraining in working with the consumer... I wouldn't even give you one star but I have to mark something to leave a review... some shame you guys read more

I wouldn't even give it a one star, make sure if you take your animal here that you do not let the lady vet touch your animal. She removed a Timor off my dogs legs almost 3 months ago and it has not healed she botched my dogs leg, it's horrible. And when I call and try to explain they want to charge me for another visit after they charged me almost 500 to remove. Now I have to go to another vet and pay again because of what this lady done! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Alan and the entire staff! We have two geriatric cats whose needs become more and more special as the years go on. We've been to other vets in town who seemed very rushed, and did not take time to explain, run the tests they need, etc. We are so glad to have found a thorough, thoughtful, compassionate vet like Dr. Alan. In addition, the techs are also very skilled and knowledgable. They are not 17 year olds who can't draw blood without poking your cat a million times, like you see in some vets.
