I asked if wall in are welcome as stated on the sign above the door! But I was told it's normally by appointment only and that he had a 10:30. Guys this is for you. We were in Seal Beach for a car show. My friend asked me if I knew any good barber shops and luckily we found this place. The owner was super friendly and accommodating. He is a one man show and works by appointment only. He was kind enough to take us in. My dog included. Now if your good to my dog that's an automatic A in my book. The shop is old school. After trying several barbers across Long Beach I'd given up on haircuts. I couldn't stand the massacres I'd encounter at greatclips/supercuts, overpriced crap from salons etc. so for a long time I was just growing my hair out and buzzing it off... Then I found Mike at his old spot on 2nd Street, over a year ago, and he's been my barber ever since. No one was able to get my hair right how I wanted it, he did, and threw in an awesome straight shave just for good measure! I've followed him to his new barbershop in Seal. The place looks great! I've been coming to my local Main Street Barber Shop for a few years and Mike's been cutting my hair for most of that time. Mike's attention to detail --definitely felt in the high quality cut I get every time --also extends to the feel of the place. He's created a classic barber shop, both in decor and atmosphere --not fussy, but spot on. Now, Mike's received some flack on Yelp suggesting that his patter might be a bit off-color, or that he comes across braggadocios, opinionated, crass... All of which is accurate! ... but so what? It's part of the theatre that is Main Street Barber Shop! It's one of the few places you can go and just indulge in some bonding without worrying too much about offending. Do I sometimes shake my head and tut and say "Oh, that's just wrong, Mike!"? Sure... but that's half the fun. I mean, there are few safe space anymore where every word isn't put under a microscope. God forbid some un-curated thought makes it online! I think everyone knows what I mean. (Ps. Based on the complaint, Mike toned it down significantly, as is his habit when young children are present.) Terrible Experience! I came here because my barber, Luis, who works at another shop now, couldn't see me but I needed a cut fast for an event. When I came back I told Mike that Luis couldn't see me and when I asked if he could fit me in he goes off on me for coming to him because I couldn't see Luis. I then left and said I can go somewhere else. To this, Mike replied "I don't give a f**k" and I said as I left "goodbye". Mike then storms out of the store and berated me saying "What did you say? What did you say?" as I was leaving. I remembered why I was so excited to see Luis at his new shop because Mike makes clients uncomfortable. See those pictures I posted? Those are excellent examples on how I look and feel after I get a haircut from Mike! Mike's been cutting my hair for a little over 2 years now. Prior to him, I've had a number of barbers who don't know how to cut my thick, heavy, and super straight Asian hair and on top of that I have a huge cow lick in the back. I've had numerous male and female barbers who told me that THEY prefer to cut my hair a different way, complain about how my cow lick doesn't fall like everybody else's and keeps "sticking up" because that's all they can do about it and need to cut it short because "that's how it's supposed to look", or they would constantly ignore me when I would tell them I want it to look a certain way. I'm a woman and I want my hair to be cut and styled in a particular way. I found Main Street Barber Shop through yelp. That's when I met Mike, the owner of the shop. He told me he had lots of experience cutting different types of hair. To be honest, initially I thought he was going to ignore me like the rest of the other barbers I've had. He listened to me on how I wanted my hair to look and he told me about his experiences and suggested different ways on how I can style my hair. I always had the final say on how I wanted my hair to look. He always makes my hair and eyebrows looking perfect before I step out of the shop. I know it's intimidating sometimes for a woman to walk into a barber shop because you don't really see many women getting their hair cut there, but hey my experience in this shop are always positive and I leave feeling heard on how I want my hair to look and always looking fresh. I just recently bought a new puppy (see my pics), and he loves to chew things. He loves to chew on my TV remote, he loves to chew on my shoes, he loves to chew on my couch, and he loved to chew on beard. No, I'm not joking around either. Every time I picked him up he would lunge his big jaw right at my face. One morning he actually ripped off some of my facial hair. Since my girl had been bugging me to shave off my beard and now that my dog thinks it's his chew toy, I decided to trim it down to a goatee. The only problem is that I'm terrible when it comes to shaving and shaping a beard down to a goatee. That's where Ernie, who works at the Main Street Barber Shop, in Seal Beach, comes to the rescue. Since I'm fairly new to the area I did not know of any good barber shops around my place. After searching on Yelp, and after reading my friend Steve M'S review, I decided to go and visit Ernie the barber. Ernie is a mad man with the straight razor. He cut off my beard and shaped my goatee within minutes. He left my face as smooth as a baby's bottom. I have really sensitive skin so I was surprised that my face had not a bump on it once he was finished. When I do shave at home, when I finish the job my face looks like a teenage boy who is going through puberty. After my shave I figured I might as well get my hair cut while I was there. Ernie is also a wizard with his clippers because he gave me the perfect haircut. When I left Ernie I felt and looked like a new man. The shop is really, really small. If there is a line in front of you, which there was when I was there, you can sit on their couch and read a magazine or watch some sports on their little TV. The prices here are also really good. I want to thank Steve M for his recommendation to this barber shop. Actually, my girlfriend should be thanking him because she was so happy that I finally shaved off my beard. To be honest with all of you, it's my belief that my girls was telling my puppy to chew on my beard so I would get frustrated and shave it off. I can't believe I haven't yelped this place. So my old barber retired and after a couple of bad cuts at various local establishments I gave Main Street a shot. Now, I have to admit that I was bit suspicious of a place located on Main Street in Seal Beach as I thought it seemed out of place amongst all of the little coffee shops and quirky stores. That being said the minute I walked in I felt at ease. Mike is super cool as is Luis but coolness is nothing if they couldn't cut hair. They both can and they both do it well. The funny thing is they have completely different styles. Mike is talkative and quick no nonsense when it comes to his cuts. Luis is more quite and takes his time. the cool thing is every time I walk out of the shop I feel good no matter which of the two cut my hair. lately I've been super busy at work and missed my every two week cut and I felt anxcious that I had not stopped in. So today I stopped in and Mike was giving this cool little kid his first tight faux hawk and the parents were thrilled with the cut. I was next and it felt so good getting my hair cut and as usual I felt great as I walked out. The other thing I like about Main Street is that they are pretty much open every day. I had stopped going to the barber shop because I wear a buzz cut and trimmed it myself. When I saw that the new owner Mike took over and remodeled the place I figured I ought to check it out. Mike treats you like royalty as soon as you climb in his chair. A cold brew in hand and a sports game on the tv meant hunch had paid off. Mike took the time to trim my hair, ears and even my eyebrows and nose (didn't know I was sporting ear & nose hair)! He topped it off with a hot towel and straight razor shave on the back of my neck. I went here today during my lunch break on my quest to find that perfect 'main street' barber shop. All I can say is my search is over. Ernie did a GREAT job, making sure I received the best quality haircut and beard trim. He cleaned me up nice too; straight razor to the neck line and beard line, a little aftershave and hair tonic on the head). I walked in and felt right at home, while I read a magazine and waited for a chair to open. All in all by the time I walked in and out was 20 min. Mike the owner/barber is the best. He's been my husband's go-to-barber for years. He's recently purchased and remodeled this shop on Main Street and it's totally spiffy. I've never had a real shave before, so I went in tentatively. However, Luis made me feel comfortable. He took his time, kept the shop open late, and finished with professionalism. If I ever go back to make my face as smooth as it did when I was 15, I'll be asking for him. As for the shop, it was clean and definitely a man cave. The college football games were on, and the ambiance definitely made masculinity feel at home. The price was more than reasonable for the time spent. I cape him & have him sit up nice & tall. Like a big boy that I know he is at 9 yrs old. And I begin to ask you what kind of haircut you would like me to give him. You are putting your fingers thru his very healthy hair for about 5 min or so. I ask you what # would you like on the sides? You then respond with no Number, I then ask again no number ? That being bald to the skin? At this point I then realize you don't speak Barber terms. You then respond I don't want a number in the back of his head like a football player. I start laughing from the miscommunication....you then ask me to put a hard part in with a razor. I then took the liberty to explain that the cut can be high maintenance & requires that you come in quite often & was trying to save you money. I also explained that I can put some Layrite in to create that illusion. Instead of having to shave it in. You then say no it's ok you don't have to put it in. I asked again are you sure ? It's not a problem & that I just need to be clear before I put the hard part in. Once it's done it's done. You then say no it's ok...my Other client that was sitting in the chair is looking @ me like wtf? Is this what you deal with? I then ask you to stop petting him & sit in the waiting area so I can work ...So I proceed to to the haircut & your handsome grand son keeps pulling the cape off allowing hair to keep going down his shirt. This goes on for 30 min or so...keep in mind I have a full schedule because I was gone for 3 weeks in your favorite beautiful Greece. You grandson is having a hard time sitting still & is very fidgety @ this point . I needed you to step in & help me with him to sit still. You did nothing but give Mer an ugly mean look. ThenI have to take the liberty to tell him to sit still so I can give him a quality haircut. I told him I did not want to mess up his hair , that I needed him to sit still & to be strong like a football player & football was playing on the tv. You then become very combative saying that you didn't want him to be a football player . Never stating he had slight autism. Not one Time did you pull me aside & give me special instructions with him for this. In fact I had a full on Conversation with him about school . He seemed very bright but doesn't seem like he is comfortable with people touching him like most kids diagnosed with autism. Like I expressed I have several clients & family with autism. So know it comes time to wrap up the haircut with some fresh layrite looking sharp . I give the kid a lolly pop , He gives me a high 5 & said thanks! My client that was sitting in the other chair said to your grandson you look good kid! He has boys that age....As we are a family oriented shop. My other client also said he would chime in on this review to add his two cents. I think it's safe to say you can't make everyone happy & I'm good with that. Came here with my girlfriend today, didn't really know what to expect but from the look of the people coming out of the shop you could tell they knew what they were doing. Mike cut my hair and he's been a barber for many years so his technique really shows, my girlfriend said I looked like a new man and I had to agree the hair cut was super fresh.
