This place was very crowded, and for good reason. We got the mussels, a Caesar salad, Panko-crusted halibut, and a bowl of the seafood chowder. We both grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, so we know good chowder. This was THE BEST CHOWDER! Not thickened with flour or corn starch, the pure cream and butter accented the plentiful scallops, shrimp, fish, and lobster within. It wasn't bulked up with too much potato. We are going back again for more! Our charming British waiter hustled through the crowds but had a moment to chat with us about the area. Highly recommend! read more

This place knows there is no competition and unfortunately the service shows it, very slow. When this place is transitioning from breakfast to lunch the place seemed stop operating and I'm not sure why. When we arrived host told us it would be an xtra wait but the time he was telling people never changed. Food was fine, but the way they were just leaving people hanging at empty tables as wild. A table full of regulars who looked like a team of service guys were joking as they were leaving their breakfast about how the staff was so chaotic and unaware of the customers needs. Food was good; enjoyed the poutine which was crispy with gravy on top. The seafood linguine was good and came with mussels, so I probably didn't need to order the mussels appetizer. All of the portions are generous so you definitely will not leave hungry. Service is responsive. The inside is both a bakery and a restaurant; pretty casual. read more

We stayed in the Ingonish area for three nights, and we ate at Main Street twice if that tells you anything. Main Street couldn't be more centrally located amongst all of the different settlements. After all, it is on the map in Ingonish Centre. Just a word of advice here if you go, be careful pulling in and out of the parking. The restaurant is positioned right on Highway 30 immediately after a pretty sharp curve if you're driving north to south. All the parking is right in front of the building on gravel & dirt, so when you pull back out you are pulling out into potentially fast moving traffic going southbound. Be careful! This restaurant has changed ownership in the last year or two, so the interior and exterior has been completely renovated. If the weather is nice I highly recommend sitting on the outdoor deck. It is huge, and they have umbrellas if it is too hot and the sun is beating down. We sat outside on our first visit, and inside on our second. Every one of the wait staff we had was great, but our waitress on the second night went far above and beyond for us. On the first trip, we ventured into the mussels. Neither of us were much of a mussels fan before this trip, and I think the batch we got on our first visit here just got us obsessed with them. Main Street actually sources theirs from somewhere up around Cape North, so they are about as fresh as you can get. The white wine sauce was lightly flavored with garlic, along with julienned carrot and leek. The mussels were medium size, and that sauce was just spectacular. You'll need that nicely toasted garlic bread to soak up the remains in the bottom of the dish! My wife got the Cape Breton Seafood Chowder, and it was really good. That chowder was loaded with big chunks of fresh local seafood. We also split one of the Caesar salads, which we both thought was very fresh with a great dressing. We returned two nights later, which happened to be my birthday. Boy, was a ready for the mussels again! We arrived fairly late that night, and unfortunately they had run out. Second option for us was the swordfish special, which sounded fantastic. Our poor waitress returned back to us to let us know another table just ordered the last one of those, too! So, we got the lobster roll that night and it was fantastic. Our waitress felt so bad, being my birthday and all, she just asked us to pick any dessert for free. Of course yet again, I picked a key lime cheesecake which was (wait for it) sold out! We laughed it off, and picked a fantastic turtle chocolate cheesecake which really surprised both of us. I would highly recommend this Ingonish location of Main Street, and make sure you visit the bakery case up front. They really have a pretty talented chef in there making some fantastic sweets and baked goods. Take some with you on your way back to your lodging or for the rest of your road trip. read more

On a tour the guide said great food. We went in no one in front of us waited 10 minutes to be seated. After being seated another 10 minutes they brought us water said they would be right with us. Now they are getting busy seating people down around us. 15 minutes later a waitresswith blue highlights in her hair who we were told is our waitress starts taking orders of people who just sat down. My husband and I then to just walk out. No even acknowledge us. Went back outside to where our tour guy was and asked why would he recommend that place. 35 minutes of my life wasted. Tour guy took us to the Governors Pub later on, got my lobster roll read more

Stopped here for lunch on our drive of the Cabot Trail. We had Abby as our waitress, and she was wonderful. She asked about our plans and definitely provided us some much appreciated suggestions - we took every suggestion we could!! Our lobster rolls were fabulous - big chunks of lobster, great fries. We declined a dessert, but reconsidered that poor decision as we walked out and saw them. Really a gem and exactly the experience we were hoping for. read more

This is a bit of a tale. I was heading in to Castle Rock Country Inn and wanted to see if I liked any of the dinner places along the way, since the Inn also has dinner. I passed Seagull and Brookside - both looked well populated by locals but IDK. Maybe I would have loved them. Then I stopped at Coastal up the block. Took a menu, sat myself, got basically no attention for 5-10 minutes, got up and left while one of the idle staff watched me. I didn't even test the waters on any of these other places, so they don't get reviews. Main Street does! It feels a bit like a lobster cafeteria inside, one of those by-the-bay type places. Well lit, plenty of room, but a bit barn-ish in appearance. I wanted to treat myself so I went simple - lobster. It wasn't the biggest, but it was fun to pick through. (And female, so I got bonus roe.) The mashed potato side was rather ordinary, did not seem like fresh potatoes though it certainly wasn't powdered. The veggies were definitely frozen. Oh well, the sides are filler. Waitress was friendly and personally accommodating the whole time. Brought out a blueberry pie slice for dessert, since the last blueberry crumble was claimed before I put a claim on it. (My bad, totally could have done that right at the start.) Except not my bad, because that pie was delicious. The blueberry filling had a nice cold flavor to it - maybe without lemon, which is how I've made it in the past (since I was too cheap to buy a lemon, long story). Nice big slice for a reasonable price. So in the end, that has secured a solid 4 stars for Main Street. Just note that they close at 7 PM... but Coastal closes at 8, so if you're a little late, you're gonna get stuck at that other place. Good luck. read more

Great food & service! The lobster was caught that morning! Cooked perfectly, and they remove the tail and split it to make it so deliciously easy to eat. The seafood chowder is some of the best we've ever had, and the poutine was very good. Blueberry pie was excellent. The owner, Sam, gave us excellent service! We're back for breakfast and will check out his 2nd Main Street restaurant in Baddeck! read more

While staying in Cape Breton for a couple nights we ventured here for dinner. Very friendly staff! Great service. The hubs and I both had a cup of the seafood chowder which had not only shrimp, clams and fish but lobster too along with potatoes and carrots. For our main we shared a traditional fish and chips. Delicious plentiful portion. We opted out of dessert until we were walking out and saw homemade key lime pie in the dessert case. True confession....we took some to go. It was scrumptious. Plenty of parking. Outdoor dining as well. I really wanted the fish tacos but they said they had to tone down the menu. Only remembered to take a photo of the chowder. Sorry guys. read more

Great great great! Speechless restaurant! The service is great and the food is amazing! I waited till 11 when they start serving lunch, it's definitely worth the wait, I had fish tacos because fish burger is not available, the fish is sooooooo good, crispy and thin coat on the outside and the inside just melt in your mouth! My girl had this seafood linguine, so many kinds of fresh seafood on top and so much of them! Also, chocolate milkshake is great! BTW, if the owner or the chef is looking at my review, your fish is soooooo good, more variance of it would be great like the fish burger or just some traditional fish'n chips. read more

We did not expect this meal when walking in on a Tuesday night June 2023. The Cabin owner where we stayed recommended this restaurant and mentioned it was known for good seafood. (It was also across the street!) On first appearances I thought this would be a quick-roadside-seafood-and-go restaurant. It turned out to be one of the best dinners we've had on our vacation! The food is super fresh. We had the halibut and salmon - crazy Great meals right down to the presentation! The desserts are homemade and Excellent!! If you are in this you'll be happy that you stopped here for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Check the hours because they're not open every day of the week, and they close at 7pm - FYI.. read more

Wife & I had a terrific dining experience here for lunch before tackling some hiking trails in Ingonish. The seared salmon was moist & flavorful with a fruity glaze that was not overwhelming. Besides the obligatory mashed potatoes was an outstanding vegetable medley--fresh, crispy veggies nicely seasoned. We were in a rush to get to the Bird Island tour later and didn't have time to sit for lunch, so we stopped randomly here to get take out. It didn't take too long and they were not too busy. Great little place with nice people and a nice looking bakery. On the road we ate on a pull-over point with a good view. My only complaint is that the club sandwich and fries were more on the dry side, we didn't have any oral lubricants such as mayo or ketchup in large enough amounts to get it down without choking so it took a lot of water sips to moisten it on the way down the gullet. Make sure you get lube to go! Otherwise it was great tasting food, good portions. read more

It took us forever to get seated, (there was a line). Our food took forever to arrive. It was even impossible to get the check. We weren't the only people to have issues. Had a great experience here while bunking across the street at the Skyline Cabins overnight on a trip down the Cabot Trail. This was literally a 2 second walk from our cabin so a large group of 8 of us ate here 3 TIMES over the period of 2 days. Generally mostly all positive experience, too. Great homemade bread and pies cooling on open racks to entice you right when you walk in, it's exactly what you'd want from a small local restaurant and eatery Positives: Great homemade baked goods Turkey Club made with REAL hand pulled turkey, white and dark meat. No processed cold cuts in sight Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast was awesome for breakfast Bay of St. Lawrence Crab Legs were ultra fresh and delicious, someone ordered this at least once during all 3 visits Butterscotch Pie was to die for! A true east coast treat, loved it. Fisherman's Platter (Scallops, breaded haddock, fried shrimp, crab legs) was fantastic as well.. Add the Fish & Chips to this as well Negatives: Breakfast Smoothie was too icey, hard to drink A couple of the pies or cakes were NOT homemade, but Sysco products (you could tell by the perfectly cut slices with parchment paper in between) Fries were frozen, not fresh cut :( Food came out SLOW, service was totally backed up. But cannot fault the 2-man kitchen for this But honestly this is just nitpicking, anybody who has spent time in Ingonish will know the pickings aren't exactly plentiful, so we were thrilled to have a small family owned operation like this to dine at during our stay. Great food, service and baked goods. Delicious Kitchen Party beer was served up very cold, which was refreshing after a long cycle in the mountains. Angel hair pasta with Lobster and Muscles was a large delicious serving. The nice large patio provided the right sun/ shade I needed. This is a super little spot to stop in and great some great local food. We opted for a sharesy's - lobster linquine with mussels in a wine sauce, and lobster mac and cheese. We went there although we read the mixed reviews here, since we didn't want to drive far away to have dinner (other places in the area didn't seem much better so you might as well go across the street...) We ordered a soup that never arrived, but at least they didn't even try to charge for it. The food took a long time to arrive, and when it did we realized we didn't get any cutlery and had to wait several minutes longer. With that said, the food was surprisingly good and the waitress was really nice. They did have a busy night, but with the reviews here it looks like it's always like that... I would probably still return here if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Excellent dinner! The service was very good and the food even better. I had the Angel hair lobster. The presentation was beautiful with pasta with a red sauce and scallops and shrimp, topped with lobster and a bed a dressing of fresh mussels. Divine!! Dessert was a chocolate volcano cake and coconut cream pie, both homemade. Our server was courteous and attentive without being pushy. The hostess that status super friendly. Main Street is great!! The pasta primavera is perfect. The seafood pasta was also good. The bread.....yum!!! We are from Boston so the expectation for food are HIGH. The Cabot trail is NOT the place for a foodie, still, Main Street wins for best food on the trail. We found this restaurant to be the second best in the whole Northeast Coastal region, second only to the Markland restaurant in Dingwall. We entered and we're glad that it was open since so many restaurants were not on our trip. The waitress was friendly and so was the owner both greeting us giving prompt service. My wife ordered the salmon special fresh off the boat, and she requested it not be overcooked which it was not! It came on a bed of white rice with a side of very unusual pineapple salsa, not too sweet but very flavorful for both the rice and the fish. Also as a side there was sauteed zucchini and summer squash very well prepared.  We ordered the tower of fried onion rings and wanted them extra crispy, of which we were not disappointed!  I ordered the chickpea soup which came out hot and well-seasoned. The chickpeas have been ground so it was a thick puree type of soup. We saw a group of Travelers come in and five of the six ordered the lobster sandwich which we did not think look very appealing at all. It had one and a half inch thick slices of white bread on both sides, yuck! Upon leaving we stop by the bakery counter and bought cookies and a carrot cake that look really good, we've yet to dive into that! Friendly and worth stopping. Fair prices. read more

Good quality seafood at very decent prices. We found this little restaurant/bakery when we needed a little rest stop on our 10-hour long driving trip on the Cabot Trail. It's located in Ingonish Beach, and the plus is that ScotiaBank was right across the street! As far as I know, that's the only ScotiaBank on the Cabot Trail (BofA customers can use their ATM to take out Canadian money without getting charged a fee!) It's so nice to have a good and affordable place to eat in such a remote region of Nova Scotia! read more

We tried hard to find a decent place to eat around Ingonish Beach and managed to find this little gem of a restaurant through tripadvisor (sorry yelp. I love you, but you weren't much help in the Maritimes. It's not you, it's them). My bf and I ordered the seafood pasta (an order for 2 people) and we were stuffed to the gills (pun intended). Seafood tasted fresh, service was attentive and efficient. We weren't able to finish our entree though since we wanted to save room for dessert! We stopped into Main Street really excited to have a diner out during our Cabot Trail trip. Although the service was great I can't say anything good about our meal. I ordered the crab dip appetizer with tortilla chips. It was a struggle to find any crab in the dip and the tortillas were stale. My wife ordered salmon and I ordered phyllo pastry with halibut. The phyllo was burnt and inedible. My wife's salmon was dry and the baked potato was burnt . We really didn't want to complain because we just wanted to enjoy the night. However the waitress noticed we weren't able to eat large portions of our meal and gave us one of the entrees free. Although it's nice to have it removed from the bill we really regretted going here. I actually love this place, it's beautifully designed with the recent renovations and their chef and menu is fantastic. But the reason I rarely visit? THE SERVICE IS SOOOOOOOO BAD. The servers are slow moving, rarely come back and seem so disengaged from their job. It took about 10 mins for them to seat us in an empty restaurant, with two separate waitresses asking us how many in our party of 4. And to get our order in.....oh my that was another hassle. And water? we ended up having to go get it ourselves. Menu is great and the food is super super tasty and a little more creative than the usual CB fare. But the service completely turns me off. read more
