We stayed for a week and enjoyed two dinners at the Markland. The food is pretty good, especially because there aren't many places to eat up here! We tried an array of items including the fish chowder (highly recommend), scallops, seafood pasta, steak, halibut, and lobster. All were good but the standouts were the chowder and lobster dinner. We also had the complimentary breakfast every morning which was a nice perk during our stay. The quiche was a staple in the AM. Only thing missing was sausage or bacon. Would recommend if you are staying here or nearby. Since I'm from MA I've had a lot of amazing seafood in New England so it's hard to compete! read more

I really liked the food while I was there. they have a set menu but were very open to slight modifications (I can be a picky eater). I enjoyed their fish a lot (had the salmon and the cod) but they were slightly overdone. Not enough to make me not enjoy it though. But for fish connoisseurs, you'll notice. They give you the choice of soup/salad, main meal, dessert, and plenty of drink options. The servers are quick and so friendly. I loved eating here. In the morning they serve breakfast buffet style. They offer cereals, quiche, muffins, hard boiled eggs, homemade bread, juice, coffee, yoghurt, and plenty of fruits. Sadly no bacon. Breakfast is offered from 8-10am. read more

This is a beautiful location with cozy wooden cottages right on the ocean. The view is lovely. Very comfortable with a friendly, helpful, and skilled staff. Don't miss the restaurant! We eat here two nights in a row it was so good. The staff are incredibly welcoming and the chef is remarkable. On the first night we had the mussels to start and the halibut to follow. The server said we must have done more of the free dinner roles with the mussels to dip in the sauce and she was so right. The halibut was so expertly prepared with a delicate white sauce I'll be dreaming about it for weeks. The second night we had the lobster dinner and chowder also amazing! Plus being inexperienced lobster eater the server was kind and walked us through how and what parts to eat, her instructions were perfect we would of missed so many good parts without her help. We also had the pleasure of staying on site at those cabins. Great place to stay along the trail! Ask the staff for tips on where to hike in the area. No idea how this place got stuck in the forgotten village of Dingwall. I guess the location must have some hidden appeal I don't know about. At any rate this place is located at the very end of a country road. If you made it there, you deserve a treat, and you'll receive it. Rustic settings, and plenty of room. A country performer was playing his guitar in the front room, and the place was busy, but very cozy. Easily the kind of place where after finishing your dinner, grab a glass of wine and sit down to listen him play. We ate way too much and all we had was both excellent and well priced. Strangely enough they even had a vegan dish which my wife pounced upon, an asparagus couscous (I obviously went for the seafood). If you are passing through the vicinity it's well worth a visit. read more

I don't know how this restaurant doesn't have a recent review in years, but maybe that isn't surprising as how hidden away it is. This was recommended to us by the friendly staff of a cafe we were staying at, the hours listed on Google were incorrect and they were open when listed as closed. Completely amazing food, attentive staff, beautiful dining room. Although there was some totally ugly repurposed ocean garbage art on display, just ignore that. We stayed 2 nights and ate all meals here. I understand there isn't much else in town, but even if there is don't bother. This place is everything. The soups are so fresh, the entrees are excellent. We tried probably half the menu, it's not very big. Such attention to detail! I don't recall the dessert being anything to die for though, I would load up on apps instead. Breakfast is for guests, and it is incredible. Carb lovers heaven. Scones, homemade breads and jam, poppyseed muffins, cinnamon buns, oh my. They even had almond milk available for the coffee (win!). If you are gluten free, sorry, there is one sprouted something bread available...I tried it and nearly spit it out. But for the rest of us living our best lives, bon appetit. You will not even think twice about those extra 100 grams of carbohydrates. read more

This is a very nice restaurant in a lovely, peaceful location overlooking the ocean near the northern tip of Nova Scotia. The food was delicious. We had the mussels and scallops as starters, shared the crab cakes for an entree, and had the warm apple cake with maple ice cream for dessert. Yum! The service was friendly and all the food was great. Considering what a nice, white tablecloth type restaurant this is, they are very welcoming of kids. When our toddler mentioned he wanted an apple, our server came back with a peeled and sliced apple (not on the menu) and at no charge. We stayed at the bed and breakfast on this property, so we had breakfast here as well. The breakfast was also lovely. They offered a continental buffet with an assortment of fresh fruit, yummy muffins, scones, cereals, bread, yogurt, and quiche. read more

One day before the annual tourist season opened, my wife and I were going along the North Coast of Cape Breton in search of something good to eat. At the time, very few restaurants were open and there was one we saw on Yelp that sounded very interesting. We rode through Dingwall Nova Scotia to the end of the road where we came upon several vacation style cabins along a beautiful coastline and drove up to what we thought was the office. Nobody was there. So that evening, I called the restaurant and found out it was open, that someone was there all day, and I made reservations. The next evening we retraced our steps down the meandering road and sure enough it was the same place. Again, no signage, but we saw some cars parked and we so we rambled about to figure out the way to the front door. The chef of this restaurant is a well schooled and self-educated wonder! We came on the first night the summer season, so there were only four tables dining. The menu is simple, and the waitress said everything they prepare there is simple and local. We ordered salad, mussels, halibut and a bottle of wine. Wr ordered Mussels as an appetizer in white wine and herbs and all were plump, sweet and devine! The salad was sinful, it was so fresh and made with beets shoots and all sorts of other tender shoots apparently grown across the harbor by locals. The dressing was just a hint and really didn't impact the flavor of the shoots. The halibut came out nicely golden testing on top of a bed of homemade mashed potatoes and a side of delicate fiddlehead fern shoot as vegetables. The thick piece of halibut was so fresh, just like the mussels without even a hint of ocean. All were very very sweet, very very tender. And unlike so many other places that over cook their fish, this was to perfection. The chef came over to chat with us after our meal was done. What a delightful fella from Toronto where he worked for several fine restaurants before moving East with his family. Tall, red-headed and full beard he's the epitome of somebody living out here on Cape Breton. He could run an award-winning restaurant anywhere, but he chose this for his family and he is unequaled as far as we're concerned! A must in your list of restaurant experiences. We had a great dinner here and the restaurant was very accommodating, even though there were no available seats or takeout containers. This place is the second restaurant in Nova Scotia which we found to have the best seafood chowder. Think lump seafood chunks and potatoes with skin in a light thin broth. This kitchen is superb. The chowder here was filled with salmon, lobster, crab, white fish and mussels based in pure cream with a hint of tarragon. A must! The halibut was fresh caught that day and perfectly pan roasted as was the salmon. The blueberry pie was insanely delicious. This restaurant is really superb. We came late without reservation on a Friday night, but the wait was worth it! The food was the best we have had on Cape Breton. But here was the amazing thing. We accidentally locked the keys in our vehicle. The manager made several calls, offered a ride back to our RV and was outstanding. Ultimately AAA of Canada, we are from the US, is coming. Great wait staff, super manager and the food was excellent! read more
