Me and my family came here for dinner while staying the night in Cheticamp. It was super busy when we arrived, but we are very patient and willing to wait. We were given menus, then our waitress left us and didn't come back for 10 minutes. We ordered the munchie basket as an appetizer and there was not nearly enough food for the 4 people we had. We finished it in 3 minutes. The mozzarella sticks were mini and we only got 1-2 of each item from the basket. My vegetarian mother ate what was advertised as a broccoli cheddar bite, and was horrified to find bacon bits in it. Later while paying, they refused to comp it and said that because we ate it they couldn't comp it. My mother was so disgusted by the bacon that she didn't even want to eat her meal. The meals themselves had some good parts, but the vegetables looked microwaved and bland. The pasta was oily. Everything looks like frozen and reheated food. We also had 2 extra drinks on our tab that we had to reject. The staff seemed nice enough, but the food is atrocious and they are severely understaffed. read more

The food was 3 stars at best. The appetizer of mushrooms "stuffed" with local clams (?) was a gooey, cheesy mess with a few mushrooms buried in the slop. The "had to have" special fish dinner was pretty bad ... I mean, shouldn't fish be able to be cut with the side of your fork? Or a knife? This whatever it was had to be pulled apart in strings. Eye-opening bad! Microwave chef and really bad service. We are tourists, came to this place for a bite. Waitress asked us to grab a boost, so we did, when asked if we can sit at the boost by the window, quote "I'm the only one here, I don't have time to clean the table". Okay, a bit staff issue, happens, understandable. And it gets worse! When we order, the waitress only took my order, completely ignored my partner's order. When she brought the food, quote "You didn't order". WOW, seriously? She ordered, I heard, and your first reaction is "It's not my fault" ??? We stopped in for lunch with no expectations. The restaurant was large and able to accommodate our group of 10 quickly. There's a small patio, a very large bar and an ample sized dining room. My husband and his family were impressed with the hockey memorabilia in the bar. Jerseys and photographs line the walls. There are 2 pool tables and an odd back room of slot machines. We sat in the dining room. The waitresses were pleasant and the menu was huge! I had a cup of the seafood chowder. It was creamy and the seafood wasn't overcooked. The scallops were my favorite, but it also had shrimp and white fish and possibly something else. It was full of seafood and felt like each bite was a mystery. I am sensitive to salt, and didn't find it over salted. It came with an assortment of beads and crackers making it a filling lunch option. My husband had the fish and chips. A big plate of fish and fries that he called decent (he's super picky about fish and chips and tries them everywhere). My daughter feels the same way about club sandwiches. This one was good, not the best, but satisfying. My son had the appetizer mussels. It was a huge bowl of well-cooked, steamed, plump mussels. It came with toast and garlic butter dipping sauce. Yum! My vegan sister-in-law was happy with her veggie wrap and the rest of the family seemed to finish their plates though I can't comment on what they thought of it. Finally, the kids were excited that they got to pick a toy from the large selection of glow sticks, etc. Even though they had chosen not to order from the children's menu. Overall, I'm glad we gave this place a try. We noticed a lobster roll was missing so when I called Cory offered to drive about 30 mins my way after his shift to bring the lobster roll and threw in a nice surprise. The poor food and rude service that we experienced at Le Gabriel was certainly not representative of the Chéticamp hospitality that we've come to expect in Cheticamp. Nice lounge with live music. Good beer selection, local craft beers available. The Mussel appetizer was fantastic, the Salmon was pretty flavorless, dry, over breaded. Reasonably priced. If you're into Poutine they have an entire menu for it. Service was fair, waitress had too many tables to provide for, not her fault. Worth a shot if you're in the area. read more

You can tell from the decorations that this place is clearly for tourists. I had the shrimp and scallop skewers which was a very strong meh. The seafood and beans tasted frozen and it seemed that the only thing that was fresh was my baked potato. The whole dish was around $27 which seemed a little ridiculous for 4 frozen shrimp and scallops, some vegetables and a potato. Most places were closed since we went during an off season so we didn't have a lot of options. If I came to the area again I would just buy some scallops from the grocery store and grill them on my own. They seemed more fresh than what was on my plate. read more

My fish and chips had doughy breading on the fish. The coleslaw was pureed to a mush. Good french fries though. My companion's seafood shish kebab was superb. Scallops and shrimp interspersed with vegetables. Nice rice on the side. Good selection of wine and beer. Best of all, we enjoyed the Cape Breton fiddle music while we dined. The restaurant was busy and there were only two servers, which made the service slow. My wife's baked potato was rotten; we were unable to see or get the attention of our server to get it replaced, after almost 10 minutes, we got the attention of another server to get it replaced. As we finished our meal, the server brought the bill, then disappeared. Upon examination, the bill was wrong, I was charged for an extra potato and I was charged for the wrong size salad. I took the bill to the bar, as there was a line up there to pay. The bartender had a bad attitude and gave me guff about having the server adjust the bill--when I politely explained she was nowhere to be found, he did adjust the bill. He told me I had a bad attitude by bothering him and not dealing with the server. The group next to us, consisting of two couples, ordered dinners and three of the four were delivered at the same time. The fourth dinner took at least 20 minutes, possibly more....it was delivered after the others were finished. This group was ahead of me in line to pay the bill to the bartender, as their server was absent. They politely expressed disappointment in the delay of the fourth dinner. The bartender went off on them, claiming the delay was only 5 minutes (it was at least 20+), then told them to get out of the restaurant and to never come back! Later I found out that this bartender was the owner's son. Further investigation on another site found this is not the first time for his rude and, in at least one other case, threatening behavior. This is a tourist area, frequented daily during the summer by guided tours of Cape Breton Island, so many will never return to this area or Le Gabriel. It's obvious that the owner won't stop his son's abuse of customers; so I would avoid Le Gabriel Restaurant & Lounge and opt for others in town that appreciate and respect their customers and provide outstanding service. read more

Stopped in here for dinner in October 2016 as it was close to accommodations. We were seated in the main dining room area. Service was attentive without being invasive; fish and chips were decent. A dessert cart makes its way around the dining room, which is quaint. THEN: Asked our waitress if we were able to pop in on the adjoining lounge to watch a bit of hockey and order a beer. Waitress looked . . . uneasy, or something, for a second, but said yes, shouldn't be a problem, it'd just be busy because there was an event going on. Cool. Pay our dining bill, head over to the lounge (full of amazing sports memorabilia and much more interesting than the dining area), and have a seat at the bar. Ask the bartender what they have on tap. "Are you with the (offroading) event?" We are not, but just wondered if we could have a quick beer / soda; we have "approval" from our waitress. "Sorry, we're all booked up." There's no signage, and the bar area is empty except for us. "No seats, can't serve you." We're sitting in seats, and we were told we're allowed here. "No seats." This went back and forth for a minute before we just left. A "private event" sign would have sufficed if we were somehow trespassing in the lounge. Easily the surliest, stupidest and most dismissive service I've ever had anywhere, so if you visit, make sure you have a hall pass or something before you try to order a beer. read more

Rating was accurate. The high was the broccoli and cheddar soup- fantastic (puts Panera Breads version to shame). My haddock wrap had too much vinegar in sauce so blew the enjoyment. My wife's Caesar salad was DRENCHED in dressing and covered in croutons so she was dissatisfied. One of my daughters had the worst 'deluxe salad' ever as there was barely any lettuce!! it was all shredded cheese, ham with some cucumber and again a lot of croutons. I'm We stayed in Cheticamp for 2 nights. Locals recommended Le Gabriel but we were hesitant to eat there because the reviews on YELP weren't that great. We decided to try it for the live music (every other evening). I was bowled over by the fish and chips, which were the best I've ever had...crunchy, cooked to perfection crust, fresh, delicious, haddock, cooked perfectly and not greasy! We returned the next night for more! Service was fine, but a bit faster when we sat in the bar. The music was good, too! I highly recommend! read more

The wife and I stopped here around July 4, 2014, and I have been remiss in not writing a review. We were here the same day that a hurricane/tropical storm was coming through and they were not busy but there were a few more diners. The reason I am writing this review over a year later is that my wife and I still remember this meal as one of the best we have ever had. I had halibut cheeks and a bowl of seafood chowder and the wife had a scallop plate. Everything was fresh and amazingly over the top delicious. The seafood chowder was so good I wanted to lick the bowl. We will once again be making this trip from Maine to Cape Breton in large part because of the meal we had here. Hopefully it will be this good the next time. The service was extremely good. Every person we met here was very friendly. We will be back! read more

A charming lighthouse exterior was matched by delightful service, and tasty family fare inside. The parking lot was full coming in at 5 pm, which boded well and we managed to squeeze into a vacant booth. When we left at 630 pm, there were 10 people waiting for tables in the lobby. And the wait would be well deserved. The Acadian platter contained a mix of local cuisine (broth soup, pork and beef pie, fish cake), all of which were tasty and obviously homemade. The special that night was Halibut cheeks: soft fish lightly battered, and served with homemade fries. Super. Don't forget the roll and oatcake accompaniment, also flavourful. Even the grilled cheese ordered by my mother in law was well made: just lightly greased, with a crisp accompanying salad. As a former commercial cook, she knows a good grilled cheese when she sees it. The pecan and coconut cream pies for dessert were the perfect cap, and yes, also homemade. All this for a reasonable price, which included a toy for the child in the party from the "toy chest". About $85 for four. Decor is a little dark, with a nautical flair, as befits the theme. The wooden carved buildings atop the wall are worth a look at, as are the Acadian-flag painted lobster traps. Service was friendly, prompt, and also came in both official languages, judging from the other conversations we overheard. If there is any knock at all, it's a very minor quibble: the draft beer list was boring, as it contained no local brews, unless you count Keith's as a native. Would heartily recommend. read more

I feel some of the other complaints about service may have been a cultural difference in service style. I found our waitress appropriately attentive. The food quality was not consistent. Our group who had the crab and lobster thought it was excellent, however, those who had salmon couldn't eat their meal. It was tough. we waited an extraordinary long time for bread to be brought to the table. The manager said that she couldn't put it out because we were talking too much... That doesn't even make sense. There were five empty tables around our table, but the waiter said the reason for the sporadic delivery of our food was because the kitchen was so busy... again it doesn't make any sense.
