Looked like a good place right on the water and became crowed very quickly so I concluded this would be a good meal. Beware! I ordered the lobster dinner although price was shown as $$$. I did not ask for actual pricing but thought it must be very special. Instead I was served a lobster that was likely not even one pound with very little meat in the tail. I got a large serving of fries and a tiny cup of slaw. Dessert was a very good cake and included. When I finished, the server asked how was the meal. I said the lobster was small. She laughed and stated "they just grab them out of the tank so you never know." Surprise! I was stunned to be presented with a bill for $96 CanadIan! I had only water for my beverage. I don't believe this is an isolated occurrence as the cashier also seemed aware of this issue and would not meet my gaze and just nodded when I complained. read more

Upon entering the restaurant, we felt like we were not welcomed. The hostess was not very friendly at all, she made us feel like we were bothering her afternoon. She was also our server. They probably only had like 2 tables of customers in the middle of the afternoon when we walked in, they were not busy at all. I ordered the seafood chowder which the server said was very good. Seafood chowder came, it had more potatoes than seafood. I found 1 tiny shrimp and a few flecks of fish, and then the rest were potatoes, onion, and soup. Not only that it didn't have much seafood at all, it wasn't even good. It was bad. It tasted worse than canned seafood chowder! When the server came to check on us, she asked how our food was. I told her mine was bad, that I didn't want it anymore. She said I could order something else, but she'd still have to charge us for the bad seafood chowder. She said no one had ever complained about the seafood chowder before, like I was the very first one ever to not like their seafood chowder. She was the rudest person we had ever encountered in Nova Scotia. My husband was sweet enough to swap his with me. He ordered a lobster roll. I'd say the lobster roll was passable. read more

The view and the location is really good. You can sit by the water and enjoy your meal in a climate controlled environment. The service was good. But if you take away the service and the great view then there's not much the restaurant has to offer. The food was sub par and not worth the price. My friend ordered a seafood chowder and she fell sick after having it. One would expect fresher quality of seafood sitting right next to the ocean, but unfortunately it wasn't so. May be it was just a bad day for the chef. read more

After a tiring 3 hour hike on the Skyline trail we decided to have an early dinner. Crab dinner, chowder, and salad with lobster. Chowder was a rich broth with generous chunks of fish, scallops, shrimp, and potatoes in a not too creamy base. Delicious with that light and fluffy yet crispy chewy bun. Crab was perfectly cooked fresh and sweet with a ginormous baked potato, carrots, and coleslaw. The salad was also delish with lots of fresh crispy veggies and greens plus a generous portion of lobster on top. The warm apple cake that came with the crab dinner was amazing. Not too sweet and just the right size to share. Service was friendly and I recommend this place when you're in Cheticamp. read more

During our scenic drive along the Cabot Trail on a bright sunny day, we stopped for lunch at Harbour Restaurant & Bar (attached to Bay Wind Suites) in Chéticamp. There is also a nice wooden boardwalk (Quai Du Phare Marina) behind the restaurant with model wooden lighthouse. For a starter, the bowl of Steamed Mussels ($8.99) steamed in white wine, celery, & garlic butter, but the mussels were overcooked and on the dry side. For lunch, we shared a Lobster Roll ($13.99) served with salad (Caesar) and cole slaw. The Lobster Roll had a decent amount of tender claw & knuckle meat mixed with lettuce and very tangy mayo on a larger than average toasted hot dog bun. The good sized side caesar salad had fresh romaine, bacon bits, shredded parmesan cheese, and zingy Caesar dressing. The small cup of minced sweet cole slaw was standard. The food we had was fairly decent and priced appropriately, but nothing to write home about. We enjoyed the nice view of the harbour and observed the cows take a nap on the beach on Chéticamp Island across the way. The service started off good, as the food was served in timely order. However, after we were finished, the waitress dropped off our check, but did not return to our table after over 5 minutes to cash us out. We left the money and tip with the check on the table and boogied off on our road trip along the Cabot Trail. read more

We arrived without reservations so were grateful to get a table--even it if was by the bathroom. After placing our orders, we waited and waited and waited. Eventually our food arrived and, considering the price, it was mediocre at best. Broccoli included in the vegetables was so old that it was yellow/brown(!) not green. Admittedly, they were very busy which explains the slow service but serving old veg is just not on. My advice: eat here if you can get a nice table by the window. Otherwise, go elsewhere. read more

I walked in after checking out "The Gabriel" down the street... Which from the menu I thought a little pricey... I was seated at the bar because the restaurant was full ... Not a problem... AND a very good indication of a quality restaurant ! Staff were very attentive and helpful! My meal (fettuccine Bay side) came in a short time.... AND WHAT A MEAL!!! Pipping hot and completely as described in the menu ... Fresh and delicious !!!!! Portions are HUGE and they did not scrimp on the seafood !!! Our first real meal in Nova Scotia. We walked in without a reservation. We ended up getting seated on the top floor. If you want to be seated next to a window make sure to make a reservation. I ordered a cup of the seafood chowder and steamed mussels. The mussels were perfect. Probably some of the best I had all week. My husband ordered the Bayside Fettuccine. It had a kick to it. Glad I didn't order as it would have been too spicy for me. My husband enjoyed it. My father got the scallops supreme and ate it all. The service was to the point. We learned in our time at Nova Scotia every where is under staffed in American terms. The night we were here only two wait staff for the entire place. This is typical but not something we were originally used to. We learned to slow down and be prepared to wait. For the amount of food we ate this was one of our cheaper meals in the area. My wife and I went to the Harbor restaurant in Cheticamp because at this time of year there are very few places open before the June 1st season begins. Several of the reviews mentioned things like service and food and bread and vegetables not up to snuff. We begin with a bowl of seafood chowder that we split. It came out and there were chunks of fish and potatoes and a ring of what look to be raw cream. It was very tasty. And we got extra crispy onion rings which were cooked masterfully! We ordered the combination seafood platter with crab legs and lobster along with carrots, coleslaw, two pieces of broccoli, and melted butter. And two ice cream scoops of overdone and dried mashed potatoes. The lobster was over cooked and tough. The crab legs were sweet and easy to get into. The broccoli was cooked perfect as where the carrots. The cole slaw you can forget, and I detested the mashed potatoes. I ordered a red ale beer and she ordered a white wine and instead got a Cabernet, which was just fine for her. The service left everything to be desired! The waitress never came back to ask us if we needed anything else including a refill of our alcoholic beverages. She wasn't too friendly, perhaps it was the French Canadian in her. We did get the ginger cake dessert which was pretty much a box cake that came with whipped cream and melted sauce of caramel. It was very much overpriced, and under whelming. As we left the cashier and waitress were in a huddle speaking French and ignoring us. They've ever looked up. We believe if they tried a little bit harder they would have earned a better rating then what we're giving it today. If you're going through Cheticamp and absolutely starving on a cold May day when nothing is open, give this place a try! C'est la vie! read more

2.5 stars. I wouldn't return. We came here on a local recommendation as a place that was still open after we arrived late in Cheticamp. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and no one rushed us out. This is why I give it a 3. However, the food left must to be desired. I ordered the lobster and crab dinner. The lobster was the tastiest part of the dish. It was cooked perfectly and tender. Saving grace. My husband ordered the scallops. When they arrived, they were sitting in a pool of butter, rubbery and were just not good. The crab also tasted either tough or a bit overcooked. The veggies and potatoes were bland and didn't taste fresh. Maybe it was an off night, but this was our most disappointing meal in Nova Scotia. read more

After driving a long way to get here, and at the suggestion of our hotel owner ("probably the best restaurant in town") and also my own research, Me and my wife decided to stop here for dinner. We walked in 8 minutes before they closed, which may possibly have resulted in the not-so-memorable experience. I ordered the cod with carrots, broccoli, rice and what was described as "pork scraps" on it. I was thinking they would be thin, crispy, even fatty pieces of pork on the fish, but when I got them, they looked like teeth. I put them in my mouth and they felt like teeth and they tasted like salt. They were extremely hard and salty, like a hardened lump of salt that has been sitting in the bottom of a salt shaker for years that got wet at some point. In fact, they were not teeth, because eventually it started melting in my mouth a little and I could chew it. I'm not sure I'll ever know what they were, or if they were supposed to be edible, or supposed to be this consistency, or if they were just sitting at the bottom of some pot all day, but it was very strange and not exactly enjoyable. The rest of my meal was very bland. The fish and the vegetables, just didn't feel like they had any seasoning. I wish I took a picture of this but I was so hungry I didn't think of it. The service was OK, we weren't rushed or anything, but nothing exceptional either. And I remember the price being very high for such underwhelming food. The best thing about being here was a beautiful late sunset that was happening right outside the window. If this is the best restaurant in town, I feel sorry for the people who have to eat here. read more

It seems like it would be difficult to mess up lobster. Like hard boiling an egg, you just pull it out of the water at the right time. At Harbour they must have dropped it into the boil right after I ordered it and let it tighten up for the 20 or so minutes it took to get it to the table. Hopefully it was a one time slip up. My husband and I stayed 3 nights in Cheticamp, and ate here for 2 of them (and wish we had the 3rd). I had the salmon the first night and the pan-fired haddock the 2nd night. The salmon was very good, but the haddock was the best I have ever had. The vegies are cooked just right, and the rice/baked potatoes were done very well also. My husband had the mushroom/cheese covered scallops and the seafood pasta and loved them both! The house wines are good, and service is great. It has views of the harbour, but they seem to reserve early, but the entire restaurant has a bit of view, except for the bar. It was awesome! read more

Very nice restaurant. We reserved a table with a view of the harbor, and it was lovely. Wait staff was friendly and efficient. My husband enjoyed the haddock and I had the lobster. The lobster was pretty, but not as sweet as Maine lobster, oh well. Our dinner came with dessert, which we unsuccessfully tried to resist but came this close to licking the plate. The 4 of our from Port Colborne, Ontario and N. Tonawanda, NY enjoyed our dinners very much. When we decided to do the Cabot Trail I said to my friends and my husband that I am only eating seafood! Which I did and it was all delicious especially at the Harbour and reasonable too. My girlfriend and I ordered the seafood chowder, yummmm and a spinach salad. If we ever get back to NS I will definitely visit this restaurant again. The servers were friendly, the atmosphere was nice and when talking in French as some of the patrons were they are very loud. We discussed this meal after as a family of 5 and came to the consensus of 4 stars. We had a mixture of lobster, crab and surf and turf with scallops. The crab was the winner with the steak a close second. Not that there was anything wrong with the lobster, it was slightly tough in the tails. The staff was friendly and quick but there seemed to be alot of staff just waiting around. But the service was good so it didn't seem to matter much. The two items that hit the overall score were the side items and the price. The sides (vegetables and rice or potatoes) were bland and definitely a second thought. Veggies were overdone and lacked any seasoning at all. It wouldn't take much to improve in this matter. Secondly the price was pretty high. Given the disappointing sides you are paying a hefty $37 for a lobster or a crab. I can get a fresh lobster in Ontario for much much less than that. I don't begrudge them too much as the local economy is the real benefactor. Just bring a bit more value with some improved sides and you are getting close to the price charged. read more
