Service is fair. Selection is ok for a small town. Prices however are definitely way too high. As in I understand it's a small town, but prices that high do nothing but make people feel they're being taken advantage of. Also it's not a good look if the day after the largest nation wide protest in modern history you post a selfish rant on your front door. I dropped in last week planning to shop for top-of-the-line Salomon hiking boots. My wife has a similar pair that she has worn into the dirt for close to nine years and although we have had to hit them with Shoe Goo over the years, they just keep going through heavy logging, work in the trees and groundwork. She refuses to give them up (I have tried over several birthdays and Christmas'), so when it came time for me to replace my boots which also take a royal beating, I decided to go with the tough ones. I checked Backcountry.com, one of our usual sources for outdoor gear. We have a great history with them, but try to avoid going to a shop to try something on and then buy online to save a few bucks. Bad juju. Thanks to BackCountry, I had a good idea on prices; I figured if Main Street Shoes came in within $20 or so of an online price, I would buy there. It went well at first. The owner measured my foot and advised me on my size as it related to 2-3 manufacturers and she brought out several pairs for me to try. Then things took a dive. Although I know Keen has a devoted following, their boots look like Hobbit wear and I took a pass. The Salomons I was most interested in were only available at Main Street Shoes in black; not for me. When I asked about other colors, she said there was a light tan (my preference), "But you won't like them." End of discussion. Meanwhile, I (and my wife, who wandered in and out of the shop based on her levels of frustration) was assaulted with tales of the shop owner's running (she is a long-distance elite runner of some renown), injuries she has sustained and how she plans to run two more 100-mile races before hanging it up. This went on and on, with no conversation relating to me, us, our dog waiting outside in her motorcycle sidecar or anything else. Just the owner. We don't need much attention and we sure don't need stroking to evoke a sale. But this just got downright weird. We'd both asked the owner how she'd fared with the pandemic and she cavalierly replied oh, things were pretty darned good what with emergency response people (such as firefighters, following yet another horrific fire season) who purchase work boots on the government's dime. No mention of all of the people truly hurting, just how things were good for her. The grand finale came when she went off on a story about her 88-year-old mother and how she has decided not to get a Covid vaccination. She said it was everyone's choice (true) and then she launched into a subtly-veiled pro-Trump, let's just screw the county rant. My wife cycled back in and when she heard this, she said later that she was really hoping I didn't patronize Main Street Shoes, then or ever again. I had exhausted what the owner had in my size and since there was no offer to try and get in the $200+ Salomon boots in the color I wanted, I left, but only after more stories about the owner. The shop is surprisingly high-end for Trinity County, which was the poorest county in California until a few years ago. We know; we make a lot of donations here. There are the predictable high-quality brands at the shop but almost nothing--unless it is on sale--is under $50 in apparel and more like a minimum of $125 for footwear. I went home and found the tan Salomon boots I wanted at www.backcountry.com. They do have great sale prices at times but these boots were full price and they cost very close to Main Street Shoes' price, even with shipping.
