Had a cup of hamburger/mac soup, served lukewarm and the broth was a deep, deep red almost brown. The soup was so sweet it tasted like a dessert. Tried to order clam strips but at 6pm they were sold out so ordered the shrimp basket. The shrimp were the size of popcorn though the menu didn't advertise as such. Outstanding customer service! We arrived 30 minutes prior to closing and the staff was so friendly! The clam chowder rivals any Maine restaurant and in my opinion was the best clam chowder even better than Maines restaurants. We were greeted with a warm welcome. Our waitress was extremely patient as it took us forever to decide on what to eat. We finally decided on starting with a coconut shrimp as an appetizer. They appeared to be a large shrimp battered in a coconut flavored breading. They tasted really good and were accompanied by a sweet dipping sauce. My wife ordered a lobster tail with a baked potato. Our 10 year old stayed on land ordering a cheeseburger. I ordered a small lobster roll. We all picked on a fried baby shrimp basket. The portions seem small. But looks can be deceiving. Had lunch today at Mainly Lobster. My husband and his family have been coming here for years. We live in California. We come here every time we're in town. We've never had a bad meal. I usually get the lobster roll and it's always delicious and fresh. My husband usually gets the twin lobster meal and it's always great! They serve great quality food. Today I had a cup of their New England clam chowder and it was amazing. Probably the best clam chowder I've ever had. I also had the lobster roll with fries and a side of the tuna mac salad. This is our favorite restaurant in the Plattsburgh area. We used to come here often when we lived in the area and we always return when we can and it never disappoints. The lobster roll is a classic and the fries are delicious. Our server Kelly was amazing and even remembered what we had each ordered when we returned for dinner two night later. This place was great! A bunch of family came here for lunch and we all had a little bit of everything it seems. We had lobster bisque which was buttery and tastey. My sister got the kicked corn and crab chowda and she liked it. I got some crab cakes and though they looked different from what I am used to they were delicious inside. My aunt got a labstah roll and said it was totally delicious. A couple of my family members got the labstah melt, I was told it was very good. I originally wanted to give this place 5 stars because the first time i went i had their 2 for 1 Lobster dinner and it was great. We went again for lunch and i tried their Shrimp Bacon Mac and Cheese special. What they served me was a tasteless garlic bread slice that was bigger than the actual mac and cheese portion. The "mac and cheese" had a thick layer of tasteless bread crumbs dumped on top which i scraped off onto the plate. The few spoonfuls of actual mac and cheese were dismal. It was dry and extremely bland. Not even a half hour later i threw up and proceeded to do so a total of four times in the span of an hour. Will never come back here and will advise my coworkers against it on trips to come. read more

We have probably eaten here more than two hundred times in 25 years. The place has always been spotless and the staff have always been very friendly. We have had everything from chowder to lobster. The food has usually been good and when something wasn't, then problem was remedied. The prices on some items are a little high, but they often have good specials. On our latest visit we took advantage of one of their nightly specials. My wife got a haddock dinner and I got a shrimp dinner. Both of us had fries and coleslaw. The fries were crispy and not greasy. The coleslaw is different from most places, but very good. It is chopped very fine and has a very light, sweet dressing. My wife's fish was moist with a crisp coating. My shrimp were very good and plentiful. They were sweet with no chemical taste. That has been a problem over the last few years since all of the New England restaurants had to switch to gulf shrimp after the collapse of the Maine shrimp industry. Evidently they have found a good supplier. They tend to fry their seafood until it is just browned properly. That way it is not overcooked. The only time that has been a problem for me is when they have a batch of larger whole belly clams. If you like the bellies to be firm, you might want to ask them to cook them a little longer than they normally might. We will continue to eat here regularly. read more

I made a point of calling ahead to the restaurant to learn about any options that were not fried, much to my great delight, the person on the other end told me I would be able to order food that was broiled. I'm not in the area often and made a point of heading over to the restaurant to grab an early dinner at 4:30 p.m. before I departed for Lake George. When I arrived, only then was I told the restaurant wasn't actually open to the public that night, they had a private dinner. Why I was not informed of this before I made a point of driving over is beyond me because I called within an hour of when I intended to visit the restaurant for dinner. I love places with great names. At Mainely Lobster & Seafood they make two trips up to Maine per week to ensure the freshest seafood possible. Get it!? Maine and Mainely. PUN definitely intended. Luckily this place isn't just a clever name. If your in the mood for decent seafood, the majority of which is fried, that will be light on your pocket book, then Mainely Lobster is for you. For a cost of $22 I got a pretty good lobster tail and a ton of deep fried scallops. I also had fries and beans, although the portions of the main entree were to big for me to really even touch these. The service was good as well. I had a movie to go to and was kind of in a hurry. My server had no problem dropping the check off as soon as I got the meal and took care of it right away. She did try to make lots of small talk, either because I was looking incredibly good looking tonight or because I was alone and she felt sorry for me. Mainely Lobster was definately worth the trip. Was up here for a long weekend and came upon this unassuming place tucked in the corner of a very dated stripmall on the edge of Plattsburgh. I would say most of the Quebecers coming down to shop or fly out of Plattsburgh International Airport would have no idea this place existed... however, the native Mainers who run a truck back and forth between Plattsburgh and Portland Maine have brought some New England soul food to this part of the North Country. It's certainly a labor of love to make that trek twice a week. Fortunately, your options here are both cooked and the fresh raw bounty they brought back from the Atlantic (nice display case too). I had a classic clam chowder which is a pretty basic dish, but had some nice chopped quahogs in decent quantity (some places skimp on this...). At 5.95, a bit excessive, but consider the expense getting those clams up here. The day looked like Cleveland in February (rain in this case...), so I went for a seafood marinara, which is something more akin to a Connecticut concept...but quite good with some very large diver scallops and small shrimp. Basic garlic bread looked like they took a half a sub roll and grilled it with goodies... worked fine, but for 19.99 could have picked up some Italian bread methinks. One star off for CASH ONLY...which in this day and age is kind of a sham, especially considering their in-house ATM is charging 2.25 just to access your cash. I saw the fried goodies for other patrons and they looked quite good...so I'll come back next time. One thing that needs to change...no cod here..if your going to Maine to get your products.. get some cod (that's true fish and chips where I'm from...)!. read more

I wanted it to be good, but it was just ok, (although the "Lobstah Bisque" was pretty darn yummy.) One thing we did notice: as the first ones to enter the section of the dining room we were in, you would think that a group of four with simple orders, (4 orders fish/chips), would get served first, but those who arrived later got served infinitely faster - even a group of 10, (this means a lot to a family that had been on the road for 6 hours followed by a lengthy tour of the local campus - to put it plainly, WE WERE STARVING!) People that came in long after us ate and left before we were served. Weird. Wow, this place was an extreme disappointment. I ordered the lobster alfredo. When the entrée arrived, I could not see noodles, nor the lobster. It was like they dumped 3 jars of alfredo sauce on the dish! After digging, I found the noodles to be cut in one inch pieces (am I toddler?) and literally surrounded by cream. There were 3 tiny lobster pieces in the entire entrée. This dish was completely inedible. We were dining with two elderly relatives and did not want to make a big deal about it, so I asked for a cup of nonbuttered noodles on the side. 15+minutes later, the noodles FINALLY arrived. I ate literally 4 bites of this entrée. The best part was when the check came. Besides charging me FULL price for a dish I was not happy with, the waitress charged me $6.95 for the extra noodles!!!! This place was a complete ripoff. The ambience is sterile and bright (think diner) and is located in a dinky plaza. Oh, and they don't have a liquor license, so forget about enjoying a glass of wine or a beer. If you are looking for good seafood, you are NOT going to find it here, nor probably any other place in the Plattsburgh area. This place was such a huge disappointment. I love Mainely Lobster! I live close so it's easy for me to pick up dinner on a night we don't want to cook. I've had nearly everything on the menu - favorites being the seafood chowder, oyster basket and the seafood alfredo's. Some items I wish would be improved were the rolls and hot sandwiches, as they're served on hot dog buns or small hamburger buns. My family and I have been going to this place since it opened back in the early 90s. The food and staff were always great, which is why many customers continued going back. Went there again during a visit home in February, and things have clearly changed. First, the place was empty when we arrived, which was surprising since there were always other customers there any other time we went. But, we took a seat, and were immediately informed by the server that they no longer accepted credit cards. Luckily we had enough cash to pay for our meals. I then went and checked a sign posted near the door. Apparently the restaurant is under new ownership and sometime last summer they incurred credit card transaction fees of over $2000 for one month. The sign also indicated that because of increases in the state minimum wage, combined with the high credit card transaction fees, that the restaurant would no longer be accepting credit cards. I have two big problems with this argument. First, if you paid $2000 in transaction fees, that means your business is doing very well. Second, if you object to paying your employees a decent wage, then I'm not interested in patronizing your establishment. Finally, as others have indicated here, the quality of the food has definitely taken a turn for the worse. I will not be returning. read more
