Small bar area with cozy, conversational lounge seating. The bartenders were personable and attentive. I told mine I was ordering escargot and asked her to suggest a drink pairing. She made me a gin-based cocktail with cucumber and mint notes that was really refreshing and paired nicely. The escargot itself, though, had a little too much going on for me. It came with mushrooms in a garlic sauce, but the mushrooms completely overpowered the dish. If you took a full bite together, all you really tasted was mushroom. Went here for a celebratory dinner after getting engaged!!! My fiancé had requested online to get a nice table since we were celebrating a special day and they sat us at the patio area that overlooks the garden space which was so special! We even took pictures outside and it was so nice. The food and service was incredible. Each dish came with a great explanation of each ingredient and each dish was plated so nicely. I got the beef short ribs and it was the best I've had. It felt like a Michelin star experience the whole time. My favorite part was getting the Madelines as a surprise for our engagement. They were also soooo tasty. I think it was one of the managers but she made sure to check in on us and she took our pictures outside too. Everyone was sooo nice and it was an overall incredible experience. Definitely recommend people to go there if they are visiting Montreal! It definitely is on the pricier side but for a special occasion is so perfect because there is great service, food, and the environment is lovely. read more

We decided on the Maison Boulud inside the Ritz Carlton that we can walk to for our last meal in Montreal last November. The hamachi sashimi with coconut milk, lemongrass and Buddha's hand grated table side was delicious and I was excited for what else was to come. With the arrival of a shipment of white truffles, we had to share an order of white truffle tagliarini special before it even made it on the dinner menu. I definitely was thinking, "let it rain" as the truffle was being shaved over the house made tagliarini. I originally thought the white truffle tagliarini was enough for dinner for that price so did not order an entree while my husband put in his order of the tenderloin. However, after the pasta was brought out first and I was asked what I wanted for an entree, I decided better add the sea bass. Unfortunately, because they put in the tenderloin order before my sea bass, it was already made and sitting under a heat lamp. The result was his medium rare tenderloin was disappointingly overcooked by the time we got the dish and the sea bass surprisingly bland. SO and I decided to treat ourselves to a nice lunch in this fancy place. The restaurant is located in, and adjacent to, the Ritz-Carlton, where you can also treat yourself to a fancy tea service. Some things that were nice surprises: 1. The 2-course prix fixe is 45 cad (the 3-course is 55 cad). 2. The sommelier didn't seem to care that we were only getting a cocktail and a glass of wine. 3. They didn't mind that we were dressed casually. The SO and I went for the 2 course lunch (and they gave us the option to mix and match between apps, mains and desserts or to make it 3 courses later if we chose).  For appetizers, SO had the salmon tartar and I had the artichoke salad...both were very fresh and tasty.  For mains, we both had the cod, which was healthy and satisfying. Bottom line, if you're in the mood to treat yourself to high quality food and high level service in a bourgie establishment and at a reasonable price, then this is the place to be! Note 1: There is a dining area with a glass roof, which seems popular, but you need to have a reservation, which we didn't have (btw, reservations can easily be made via opentable!). We didn't mind not being in that section because it seemed loud in there with all the conversations going on and we were perfectly fine in the quieter section with the fireplace and soothing, old school jazz playing in the background. I stayed at the hotel and had wonderful breakfasts here every morning of my summer stay. The breakfast menu was delicious and I especially enjoyed the pancakes out of all the options- but everything was really fantastic. The servers got to know us throughout the course of our stay and greeted us by name every day. They also sat us in the same table with an excellent view of the pond and the ducks. We watched the ducks wake up every morning. I came for dinner one night to celebrate my birthday. I opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings for almost every course. The dinner waiter was equally as wonderful, charming and entertaining as the breakfast staff. And the sommelier chatted with us about each wine and explained the origins and flavor profile etc. She chose perfectly matched wines for each course. Really a fantastic experience all around in regards to service and high quality food. They also took care to note food allergies which is always comforting. My experience at Maison Boulud was incredible. My friend and I were visiting Montreal and wanted a Michelin-quality dinner. MB had no reservations but they were kind enough to seat us at the bar. I actually loved sitting at the bar because the bartender and the sommelier were both so fun and passionate about their work. Every course was phenomenal and the wine pairings elevated the experience. Toward the end, I was feeling so full, but the pre-dessert course hacked my digestive system and made me feel not full almost immediately. It was a really cool trick. The restaurant ambiance was very well decorated to a beachy, modern theme. Service was beyond excellent and we were attended to right away! Food: everything was very rich, so we felt full almost after the appetizers, but we managed to pull through until dessert: I recommend the chocolate cake with the inside melted caramel/fudge and the pear confit with its Insta-worthy presentation. Every other food tasted very rich for such small portions, however, something feels missing: some foods were too bland and others lacked texture and seasoning. You'd think a Ritz-Carlton restaurant would knock it out of the park, but they did not. Why? Yes the food was fine, but the meal I ordered was missing some elements of the dish described on the menu. I presumed that I must've misinterpreted the menu. Then the woman next to me ordered the same thing and hers had the missing elements . I'd finished the meal by then and alerted the waiter to the oversight. He then brought a cold clam shell with the other items in it to me. Are you serious? How tacky. Most places who know their business would have asked if I wanted it at that point, would've discounted the meal (it was the most expensive on the menu), or would've offered a free dessert. But not so. It was so déclassé for a place where you'd expect the opposite. Too bad, because the setting was quite nice. read more

I was so looking forward to my dining experience at Maison Boulud and was let down in every way. This review would be one star if not for the desserts and one reasonable entree. My friendly advice is to ignore this stop when in Montreal. First of all, the prices are certainly premium but very little experience lives up to the price. The location at the Ritz is beautiful but the food was below average, at best. Note we were charged 42CAD for a very average burger and fries. A beef cheek we ordered was bland and clearly designed to save the restaurant money as there was nothing luxurious about it. Honestly the cooking made me feel like we were at a culinary school and though the chefs tried hard, they seemed like little more than interns excited to complete a stage at a big named restaurant. Service was not up to par. Waitstaff disappeared soon after we ordered leading us to poor our own wine and wait for plates to be cleared long after we finished. Desserts were fantastic but not enough to save the meal. Daniel Boulud and his cooking are associated with joy and whimsy, all of which are lacking from this restaurant. How to begin describing Maison Boulud? Well, let's start with the fact that it's a classy place. It's a bit pretentious, come to think of it, but in a good way. Unlike a big talker who can't deliver, Maison Boulud is on a high horse but it also does deliver the goods! The food is great. I've never had anything bad at Maison Boulud. Every dish has been excellent, carefully prepared with attention to detail and flavors, from appetizers to brunch to desserts. The desserts are sublime. And according to my husband, so are their cocktails. The staff is also very professional. They know how to make their guests feel like royalty. All the waiters we encountered were nice and attentive. Ate here the other night and had a great time and experience. There were 6 of us and we each had a fantastic meal. The ambiance at this restaurant is the perfect mix of casual nice. Visited Maison Boulud today for a marvelous birthday brunch. The prix fixe menu was excellent with delightful options for each course. We loved the tartare, blinis, eggs with black truffles, halibut, ice cream, and brownie were all delightful. The service was impeccable and the servers a delight. It was so fun just to soak up the atmosphere and be treated like royalty! Most amazing of all, the couple at the next table picked up our tab. Not something we expected and certainly fun! Well it's the Ritz Carleton you can't get wrong. Beautiful outdoor seating area.. lovely views, amazing service and super amazing food . Starting with the bread and butter, one was baguette but the other type was pizza like bread, yummy and unique. I got the gazpacho very refreshing. Husband got a garden salads full of flavour and veggies. Then he had the salmon tartare one of the best we had and I got a zucchini pasta with saffron sauce very light and good. +gluten free review. +allergy patrons be warned If your not gluten free, this is a five star restaurant and the food quality is top notch, managers/service maybe not so much. Informed them before our reservation I was gluten free and had allergies they said no problem can accommodate. Fast forward to the end, our desert a different waitress brought it out and said "The certified gluten free, celiac safe desert dish." I said right here. Now these items don't reflect what the menu wording is because of how artistic the chef is so we'd assume it was what I was being delivered. However upon closer inspection my wife told me to wait because she didn't think it's what I ordered, so we waited 5 minutes before our waitress finally came around again to ask and she apologized. Look I'm not saying this place is bad, but as a server/manager you think you would at least comp/remove the desert from our bill. Had I eaten it and ended up using an epi-pen or in the hospital it would have been a different story. I even let the hotel manager knowing by emailing him after and he told me he would forward it to the right department before I decided to leave a review. I never got an email or phone call back from the Ritz Carlton or Maison Bould. I'm ashamed of spending over $400/night + $300 for dinner and got ghosted by such a "fine establishment". If you have allergies, just be careful, next time it should be our own waitress delivering the dish. Legal advice, don't say "certified gluten free, celiac safe dish" then deliver gluten. read more

I've had several meals at this restaurant, and this review is from my most recent visit (May 2024). I ordered the "Discovery" tasting menu, which consisted of 5 distinct meals (and dessert) chosen and created by the chef. I also ordered the wine pairing, an additional $120, with wines chosen by the sommelier. The food came out in the following order: carrot soup, snow crab, salmon, risotto, sea bass, chocolate dessert. The food was delicious, but the problem is this was not a "Discovery" of the chef's menu. Nearly every course had a seafood theme and didn't reflect the variety of dishes on the menu. Pate? Beef? Pork? Lamb? Quail? All items featured on the menu but not part of the tasting. The risotto was a filler dish, a hefty serving resembling family style meals. Almost every course was heavy on fennel, too. The wine pairing, all white wine. Toward the end of the meal, when the sommelier was pouring the last glass of (white) wine, I finally asked him, "no red wine tonight?" He blushed and said the "Discovery" menu tonight is seafood based. Really?! I would never have guessed. A pinot noir would've paired nicely with the sea bass, too, and offered a palate change from the white wine. Why not call it the "Seafood Discovery" menu? It felt as though the selections were based on what the chef needed to make to clean out the kitchen before the food went bad, and not a reflection of the variety of items to sample on the menu. I've never had a wine pairing where all the wines were white. It's a bit....boring. If the chef is throwing out seafood items, I would expect a sommelier to realize the lack of variety and try to be more imaginative with the pairing. At a cost of $700, I was expecting more creativity from the chef and sommelier. read more

Elegant beautiful and well staffed. Food is excellently prepared and plated beautifully. Wine list prices are a bit egregious at almost 4x. Food pricing is reasonable for the quality. Service is impeccable. Deducted one star for portion sizes. Yes fine dinning is all about small portions but these were small for small portions. The Halibut portioning is a joke with maybe 2 ounces of fish. My scallop dish had 3 small scallops. Insufficient food quantity! Fine dinning portions aside, there has to be enough food on the plate so you don't walk out hungry which we all did. Also when the food is good you want a little extra at least to the point you don't feel like you still have to go out to dinner after you've eaten dinner. So if plan on going have some wine and cheese at home first. read more

When you feel like luxury, but not necessarily going to a hot spot, this is the place for you. My wife took me here for a birthday lunch and the entire experience was awesome. We started at the bar which was ideal for people watching. Within a span of 15 minutes, I got into 2 expertly prepared Vesper Martinis with a twist of orange. They were spectacular. I'd go back to the bar just for this drink. I got to see a dejected older man being scolded by his disinterested trophy wife, followed by her staring at her phone for 10 minutes straight without a single word exchanged between them. Both of them looked f!@#ing miserable. Who says money buys happiness? I also noticed what looked like a pimp with a gaggle of young women off in the corner ordering some rare bottles of wine. You've got a couple of businessmen to my left ordering Old Fashioneds. One of them asks the bartender why his drink doesn't have a cherry in it. She tells him that he's thinking of a Manhattan, but if he needs a cherry, one will be provided for him. Eventually, we moved to a table in the bright covered terasse overlooking the garden. Brian Mulroney walks by, and is greeted by the waiter "Hello Mr Prime Minister" The guy at the table across from us is wearing a baseball cap. Another table of country club types look like they belong in a Brooks Brothers catalogue or a commercial for cholesterol medication. Ultimately, the restaurant is a mix between people treating themselves to something special, and others who have long ceased being impressed by the nice things in life. I started with the Iberico Ham appetizer which comes at a price tag of a whopping 46$ (it was my birthday after all......) Unfortunately, the meat was sliced into tiny little squares and lacked any of the rich taste you would find at Ibericos on St. Denis or Pied de Cochon on Duluth. That's fine though. Sipping my funky orange wine, I was feeling NO PAIN. Add to that one heck of an epic bread basket and butter, life was good. Then came the burger that Lesley Chesterman ranked in her top 10. I wholly agree. It's one tasty burger. I would have preferred a slightly thicker patty, however. Purely on taste, I'll take the 7 dollar burger at Burger de Ville any day over that of the Ritz. Nevertheless, for 31$, you get the atmosphere and the experience. For dessert, I decided to get the cheese plate, which was tasty but underwhelming in it's portion. For my birthday, they also presented me with a basket of freshly baked madeleines which were seriously addictive. For a moment, I can fantasize about becoming a regular here, living upstairs and spending money with a bored look on my face. We had been wanting to try the restaurant. Overall the ambiance was pleasant but there were regular disputions from a wedding party in the room adjacent. The menu is uninspiring, and Montréal offers much better than this with better service at a better price. Avoid the Hamachi starter which is utterly tasteless. For the main courses we chose 2 pasta dishes, both of which were very simple. The Risotto with white truffle was good, but hardly challenging. The other pasta dish was nondescript. Overall this may appeal to people who want to have a Ritz experience, but it doesn't compare in any way to Paris or London, abandoning discretion and quality for cheap kitsch and bad food. So for us this was a never again but at least we crossed it off the list. Try Club Chasse et Pêche if you want a memorable dining experience with wonderful service and ambience. read more

Maison Boulud came highly recommended, so we spontaneously decided to splurge after having a delayed flight. Everything about the establishment was beautiful, and the service was top-notch (honestly expected nothing less). Opted for the pre-fixe menu, and thoroughly enjoyed the choices and every single dish that came out. I definitely recommend it since you get a pretty comprehensive experience out of it. Just make sure to allot about two hours for it. The cocktails were also really good, so don't forget to grab a drink while you're there! read more

So we found out that the Ritz Montreal is the "Orginal aka O.G." of North America. Naturally I wanted to check the property out because I am Marriott Ambassador and love the brand. The Maison Boulud is connected to the hotel and my Uber driver raved about their outdoor seating area the night before which intrigued my wife. We ordered a three course meal and shared it. It was definitely enough for two people. I had a bottle sparking water as well. First off the outdoor seating area is absolutely beautiful! This is a brunch review, and I usually hate reading brunch reviews as they don't tell you very much about a restaurant like this, so I'll keep it short. Bottom line is that I wouldn't be reviewing Maison Boulud's brunch if it was not extraordinary, and it most certainly is. From the serene environment (an idyllic duck pond, a lush garden, objets d'art galore) to the impeccably respectful and knowledgeable service staff to (most importantly) the food, this was a meal that needed to be written about. The "Saumon Fumé Maison Et Oeuf Au Plat" consisted of a mound of smoked salmon, a sunny-side up egg set on top of potato latkes, and a dollop of crème fraiche with dill, red onions, and capers. There's nothing revolutionary with this dish except that every single component was perfectly cooked, cut, or otherwise prepared. Do you like your crème fraiche to taste like otherworldly onion butter? Then this is for you, as it was for me. They could have stopped here and still earned 5 stars, but it got even better. The "Homard en Brioche" (Lobster Roll) used an especially eggy brioche roll set against a surprisingly spicy fresh lobster salad with crisp cucumbers and celery - with the heat coming from pickled red radishes. Dressed to the 9s with seasoned frisée lettuce tossed in oil, it was evident that whoever conceived this dish is in love with the kind of lobster rolls served in toasted hot dog buns at seaside New England clam shacks, but saw opportunities to tweak them in an effective way that enhances rather than subverts. My brunch ended with the "Forêt Noir," a black forest chocolate génoise with chocolate mousse, cherries in kirsch, chantilly cream, vanilla ice cream, and sprinkled with flakes of gold. A sad and sobering send-off, as I realized while eating it that it will be months, if not years, before I make it back to Montréal from San Diego for my next meal at Maison Boulud. We had the razor clams appetizer, the nimbus and grande madame cocktails, a few glasses of wine, the scallop entree and the steak entree with potatoes and vegetables as a side, and the lava cake for dessert, and all exceeded our expectations. The bread was delicious as well, and we appreciated the gift from the chef we were given after dessert. It may be worth noting that the menu wasn't exactly as it appeared online (the lamb we saw online was replaced with another option on the menu at the restaurant). If you wanna treat yourself to a champagne laced, fancy brunch, this is the place to do it. It's located in the gorgeous Ritz. Ask for the patio seating. It's absolutely breathtaking with the bright natural sunlight and freshly fallen snow. I'd definitely recommend coming hungry and indulging in the three course brunch. The mimosas are perfectly fizzy and I love the pulpy freshly squeezed OJ they use. The complimentary warm bread to start is incredible. What's even better? The rich butter it comes with! Everything we tried looked like a piece of art and was very unique. We got Foie gras as an appetizer, which had a jelly layer and pieces of sponge cake on top. I ve tried foie gras many times in the past, nothing close this this, simply amazing. John Dory fish entre was a white breaded fish with small pieces of roasted cauliflower and broccoli with light flavorful sauce spread over it. Onglet - hanger steak was perfectly cooked and served with a delicious thin gravy sauce on the side. Boulud needs no introduction and this review is just to validate that it is in fact worth the price. This is the most extravagant meal I've ever eaten. My friends and I did the 8 course tasting menu with wine pairing and I don't even know where to begin. Each dish was better than the next. There was a lot of fish and seasonal ingredients which I really enjoyed. With each service, the sommelier poured us our wine pairing and took a couple of minutes to explain to us her selection. I loved the variety of drinks that we were brought! We started with a champagne, then a white wine, a sake, an orange wine and finally a red wine. Our meal consisted of: -amuse bouche -octopus and scallop crude with a jus -snow crab and avocado with a yuzu sauce and salty rice cracker (this was my favourite dish!) -foie gras with homemade brioche -spaghetti with clams and sea urchin sauce (amazing, my other favourite dish!) -lamb with cauliflower purée and vegetables -cheese dish made of a quebec cheese on a cracker with poached pears covered with shaved cheese -dessert were 2 deconstructed apples. This was our bougie dinner choice of our trip to Montreal and it was also my first time doing a tasting menu! Maison Boulud, from Chef Daniel Boulud, really made a lasting impression on me. We had an 8pm reservation, and were seated out on the patio overlooking the pond area - really cute! The tasting menu is 6 courses, and the chef takes in any dietary restrictions/dislikes and sends out the courses. There is no set menu. We came in pretty hungry, and I did worry that we might leave hungry - but we left so stuffed! Some of my favorite dishes was the handmade gnocchi with lobster, the arancini amuse bouche, and the tuna tataki with clams. We also had several desserts - chocolate souffle was delicious and so was the passionfruit tartlets! Service was truly excellent. DANIEL BOULUD! This excellent restaurant is located in the Ritz-Carlton. We had a wonderful breakfast here, only the service dragged down the rating. We ate outside by the garden and I had their famous Pain Perdu (French toast) with three sauces plus Toulousaine Sausage. Wonderful! My wife had poached eggs with Smoked Gaspor Farm Ham. Also wonderful. The service was merely average. For example, I had to ask for a coffee refill. This chef has Michelin stars elsewhere, but he won't get them here unless better control & training is exercised with the staff. I am reviewing the brunch experience. This is one of the classiest restaurants in Montreal and the garden in the summer is absolutely stunning. For the brunch you basically get several courses that are beautifully plated. From eggs to fish to waffles I thought everything was very good but nothing stood out as a memorable signature brunch dish. read more

I dined at your restaurant with a friend of mine for the first time on Saturday evening, the 28th of May at 6:15 PM. I made my reservation one month ahead of time, and left a note in the reservation that my dining partner has a dairy allergy. In addition, I called the restaurant directly two days before dining, asking if this dairy restriction could be accommodated for the Chef's Tasting Menu, which we were excited to try. The person who took my call answered that yes, it would be no problem, and that your restaurant accommodates dietary needs like that all the time. We arrived for our reservation, and were seated. We expressed our desire to order the tasting menu, and reiterated for the third time that we needed to accommodate my guest's dietary restriction.  After some delay, our server returned to the table and relayed that it would not be a good experience, and that too many dishes would need to be compromised to accommodate this allergy. That was very disappointing, especially after feeling like I communicated properly and with ample notice what we needed accommodated to. On the back foot, we scoured the menu, trying to figure out what we would order for my guest. Our server made some recommendations for a salad, entree, and dessert to eat in tandem with my personal tasting menu. When our server recommended a modified version of the fish entree for my dairy-free friend, he asked if she would like some nice caviar on the fish. Perhaps I misread the situation, as his tone/intent seemed to suggest he was offering the caviar as an apology for all the confusion, and the disappointment of not being able to order the tasting menu. This was not the case, as I learned later examining the bill. After discussing these dairy needs multiple times, bread and butter were brought to our table. I assumed olive oil, or some combination of vinegar and oil would have been brought to the table after these conversations. I asked our server to bring some oil by to eat the bread with. Over ten minutes passed, so I had to flag down another waiter to bring us some oil and new bread, since the original basket went cold while waiting. I also asked my server about a chartreuse on the menu, simply whether it was green or yellow. He said he would ask the sommelier and get back to me. He did not, so I again had to ask another server the question. She sent the sommelier over who promptly answered my question. There seems to be a theme of needing to ask for things twice. When my first course of the tasting menu arrived, both myself and my dinner guest were given the first course of the tasting menu, when we already decided she would not be eating this menu. This was confusing, but not a problem. My guest's salad arrived, and - again - after discussing the dairy needs so many times, the salad arrived with cheese on it. We told our server and had it replaced. Throughout the course of dinner, our server accidentally slammed into the back of my dinner guest's chair, and the wrong food was delivered to our table at one point. After breathing on the food, we stated that it was at the wrong table. We watched the food-runner take a lap with both plates of food, go inside, come back out, and set the same dishes on the table next to us. The hygiene in that decision is questionable. At the end of dinner, I went to the restroom. My dining partner asked for the check. She had her wallet out, waiting to pay for the check, and the server placed the checkbook in my empty seat while I was in my bathroom. It's 2022. To assume the male will pay for the meal is such an antiquated notion. A restaurant of your caliber, with what you charge for food, and how seriously you seem to take your location, food, and service, should not have a laundry list of hiccups in service like this. To put it lightly, dinner was a disappointment from start to finish. I had high expectations for Maison Boulud, and I hope you agree that I should have had high expectations to begin with. All of these mistakes are easily correctable. I did have a few qualms with the tasting menu itself, but the intention of this email was to outline the poor experience we had as a whole. I cook by profession, and we accommodate vegans on-the-fly all the time, with no prior notice. It's 2022. To not be able to accommodate such a simple dietary restriction on a 7-course menu for ~$170 per head with ample notice and multiple forms of communication seems unprofessional and inept in itself. Also, simply brunoising a vegetable and calling it fine dining is a joke. The assumed value dining at your restaurant falls far below the mark. I tried contacting management about my qualms multiple times via email and phone call, and received no reply. They truly don't care about the customer experience.
