I tried the pumpkin spice latte and it was good. The espresso was maybe a tad more bitter in the first couple sips but the flavor ratio was perfect - not too sweet or too light. I also got to meet Mingus! Very sweet pup and very much a dog friendly spot. The barista was very friendly and working hard! But out of the hundreds of coffee stops in Seattle, this wouldn't come up as my recommended unless you're looking for a pet-friendly coffee shop. It's named after the furry fren, after all. The atmosphere is quite dark and there's fur all over the seats. It feels disorganized and dirty... so I wouldn't dine in. The menu is simple, which is not bad but also why I don't feel the urge to return, as there isn't anything great about the drinks. I'm not even sure where the beans come from. I have a dog walking business in the neighborhood and stop by here every morning with a pup to say hi to Mingus, the owner's sweet little dog (along with the various other pups that frequent it at any given time during the day). It's always a laid back and lighthearted atmosphere with the regulars providing topical and convivial conversation. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't comment on that but I've had breakfast sandwiches from here and they're very good. The owner, Praash also cooks up delicious Indian food. Def worth a try. All in all a great little neighborhood nook, especially if you like dogs! read more

Moved to the area and have been trying to find my favorite coffee shop. This place is super cute and each time I've gone, the service is friendly without being fake. And there's Mingus - the cute little old pup. What's not to love? I'd highly recommend the Bee's Knees latte. It's got rose and lavender and honey and is just such a treat, especially when you're in the period of winter when spring seems unreachable. Their plain oat milk lattes are great too. Baked goods are from Macrina, which is an excellent bakery, but unknowable what they'll have in stock when you go. Last time I went, Mingus was there and put his little paw on my lap and posed for a picture. What a cutie. We flipped through the owner's copy of Salt Fat Acid Heat that was on the table. Decided to start our day with Coffee at this spot as it was pretty close to our Airbnb and it was an Amazing choice. The place is kind of mess inside as they have been renovating but the service is amazing. Ordered a latte and regular drip and sat on the patio as one other customer was playing Ukele. Couldn't ask for a better start. Had some conversation with the guy listening him play Ukele .It was slightly drizzling which made amplified the experience. The coffee was amazing and fantastic service. There are no prices on the menu. More importantly, the place is visibly dirty. I love that they allow dogs, my dog would love to visit, but there is dog hair EVERYWHERE (on the benches, on the rug and all over the floor. There is a small Children's play area (the reason we visited) there is dust and dirt and dog hair all over the rug that is in the play area. We could not stay, packed up our yummy coffee and headed to the library down the street. The place is small and it would take 5 minutes to vacuum up the floors, rug and benches. Would make a huge difference. The location is great but I don't think we will be back unless conditions change with the cleanliness of the space. read more

Neighborhood gem- inclusive space that supports artists, local crafts and local coffee/ beer. Really friendly service. Everyone fits in- young, old, well dressed , messy. If there was a coffee shop version of Cheers- this is it. I go here rarely as its out of the way for me- but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling every-time i do. 4/6/19 Little over s week after my first visit for Thursday Indian Dinner I had the excuse to visit yesterday for Wink Doughnuts Pop Up was a great excuse to come to Makeda & Mingus early to finally try some of the beverages. Surprisingly none of them were coffee. Started with the golden milk I like to get one if it's available somewhere. She does a beautiful latte art on top. Flavor was hood and wasn't gritty like some I've had at other places. Purchased my doughnuts and wanted to do one of the pairings so enjoyed my vegan gf doughnut Passion a hibiscus sweet tea glaze with passionfruit drizzle with a Makeda and Mingus Hibiscus iced tea. Wrapped up the morning with a Phinney Fog a play on London Fog but using mint tea instead of earl grey I'm not an earl grey fan so this was a nice alternative. I love all the alternative milk options Hemp is my go always great to find a place that offers it! Greatest part of the morning was conversing with the owner and regulars before the crowd arrived for the pop up. Was a amazing-to watch her pump beverages. She was great at letting people know how many peoples drinks were ahead of them, keeping her cool during the busy non stop ordering and delivering them to the right people. it's a ways from Ballard but would definitely come for more visits. It's a warm welcoming neighborhood coffee shop. Most people probably come here for coffee.I specifically came here for the Thursday homestyle Indian dinner that a friend had told me about. Was the perfect meal and location going from UW to Ballard. Was looking for a woman owned place to support during Women History Month and decided to come here. We were served three curries two vegetarian and one chicken along with naan and rice. There was a cauliflower-tomato, lentil and spinach I believe and the chicken. Each was delicious we probably would've drank the broth from the chicken dish out of the bowl but we behaved and spooned the flavorful broth over our rice. My friend ended with an affogato and i had one if the pecan apricot cookies from Macrinas I loved that she asked it I wanted it heated up was sooo good that way. How I heard of this place: We often frequent the establishments around the corner (Pete's Eggnest, Gorgeous George's) and happened by Makeda numerous times without giving it a second glance. My sister, a big fan of Gilmore Girls asked me to stop by the Luke's pop-up, which first brought me to Makeda. Type of cuisine: "We offer a wide range of custom roasted coffees, teas, beers and wine in our cozy café in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle. We hope you come visit us sometime soon!" A selection of pastries and baked goods from Macrina are available to patrons as well. Ambiance: Long lines and many people shoved together inside made for some difficulty in getting a good sense of the space, but the inside certainly seemed bigger than what you see on the outside. One small bench outside the street facing window gives Gilmore Girls fans the opportunity for selfies on their way inside. Indoors, an open entryway gives space for the lines building up out the door and up the block. Cozy couches sit up against the wall with coffee tables giving the air of a living room. Low ceilings, dim lighting and a bustling order counter give warmth to the cafe on this dreary, rainy Seattle autumn day. What I ordered: The free drip coffee with simple syrup and half-n-half. Drinks - Average I got a hot chocolate and my boyfriend got a Mocha. Ambiance- very Poor The place was filthy and disgusting . There was no place to sit or even properly close the lids on the coffee cups. There was a strong smell of food which we think she was making in an instant pot while serving coffee. Great place for coffee especially since they use the pour over method instead of the mass prepared drip coffee which can make the coffee taste bitter. There's also Indian food nights on Thursday where the owner makes a Indian dish for dinners here. Mingus is the name of the dog who approaches you when you walk in the door. read more

I sincerely hope you get to meet Mingus the dog during your visit because I did once and I got to cuddle with him for hours! I went to Makeda a few times in the fall and always left pleased. It's a small cafe, but they make good lattes and chat away with you just the right amount. I worked there each time and never got interrupted or anything like that. I also felt safe leaving my stuff behind during restroom breaks, which is a rare feeling. I'm terrible with names so I can't recall which baristas served me on each occasion, but I remember being happy with them. I had the opportunity to see how they deal with rush, regulars and demanding people coming in, and I was really happy with how they handled everything. I'm definitely going back. read more

Messy and rough around the edges, Makeda is certainly small and local... in that it looks like I might have walked into someone's garage that they just decided to run a coffee business out of. A messy pile of grimy children's toys sit in the corner - desperate for someone to take some bleach spray to it. This is my favorite coffee and hang out spot in the greater Greenwood/Ballard/Phinney area. The coffee is always on point, and the specialty drinks (like the delicious golden milk latte with coconut milk omg) are delicious. All the food I've tried, like the breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and night where Indian dinner is served, have been super tasty. It's not just a coffee shop, it's a community where I've seen many regulars return and befriend each other. The owner and baristas are amazingly friendly, and there are always cool events happening like craft night or art walks. There's also beer and fun local art and crafts, AND PUPPIES! My experience here was good. There was nobody else in the place, so I had it to myself to work a little. No real outlets, but come on people charge your freaking machines before you go out somewhere. I never understood why nobody does that. The mocha was tasty, flavorful. The environment was cozy; because it was mostly empty (expect for a patron that came in later that seemed to know the owner and they friendly chatted), it was actually kind of messy. There was a jacket with unknown owner thrown on the pew across the wall, one of the tables has crumbs on it, another table was rickety, a little dog wanders about and mostly sleeps on the couch in the back but sometimes yaps annoyingly. The back area also seemed to have/encourage children's play. I would not like to be here with loud children. Thus, I expect it is not a place where a young person would typically come to convene and work on their Apple device. But, a nice place and a nice neighborhood. read more

Stayed in an airbnb up the street from here while on my honeymoon back in April. The owner Prash (I do hope i remembered that correctly) is so awesome and welcoming. My wife and I were in there for about 20 minutes and had a very informative conversation about living in Seattle since we are wanting to move up there in a few years. So we got all the dirt from a local and from a local business owner. The location has a very laid back vibe and feels like you are hanging out at that one friend's garages or lofts where all the peeps get together, you know what I mean? There's a very familiar "welcome back" vibe you get when you step in. The latte I ordered was nice and smooth, but what I'll come back for is the mocha. The mocha is made with a house made chocolate and it is to die for. She uses a different espresso than with the latte and this espresso is meant to compliment the chocolate and it totally does. read more

I want to love this place. Typically a small, funky, independent coffee shop is exactly what I look forward to finding. I love that it is dog friendly and I believe it is a woman owned business which I always want to support. Unfortunately I can't really recommend this cafe. This place is dirty and dingy, and I am far from a clean freak. The coffee isn't anything special at all. The pastries usually seem dry and day old. I've been in a few times over the last two years and I seem to always catch the owner/barista in a crummy mood (I can only assume due to the other positive reviews). I've gone in and found the cafe completely empty and had to wait 10 minutes to be helped, been treated like it was an annoyance to have to take my order, then been ignored some more. There is no info regarding what things currently cost in the cafe, you'll usually have to ask for something basic (silverware, cream or simple syrup for coffee, napkins) and my experience is the barista/owner will act a little put out by the request. Maybe she doesn't realize this is how she is coming off, I don't know. I really do allow for the possibility of someone having a bad day but my experiences here have been pretty consistently crappy. Needless to say after trying this place about 6-7 times over the last couple of years and bringing my dog here too, at this point I don't think I will be going back. read more

This is one of the nicest cafes I've visited in Seattle. Not in the traditional Instagram way, but in a quaint, neighborly sort of way. The cafe is dog-friendly--a trio of puppies jumped up when I entered--and the barista when I was there was super friendly, but in a very welcome and non-intrusive way. We stopped by this cafe when going on a self guided coffee tour in seattle for my tourist friends and we adored the vibes of the place. It's an aesthetically clustered shop with indoor and outdoor seating, so many cute local brands and artists featured in little booths and the cutest little dog named mingus! The owner took our orders and we had a wonderful conversation about the history of the store. The vibes were super homey and casual, we loved it! I got a chai latte and omg the way it's actually real chai and not the sugary stuff starbucks claims is chai. The chai was delicious!! I am entirely thrilled that I decided to try this place. Walking up, I was unsure. Walking in, I was even more unsure. It feels small and homey, but not in this new "hipster homey" way that most espresso/coffee shops are going for. This "homey" was more of an, "Oh shoot, am I going to be convicted of breaking and entering? Is that the family guard dog? I'm so sorry, I'll leave." The owner and her dog were the only living souls in the room. Despite my initial reaction, I was immediately welcomed by a wonderfully friendly face. The mocha I had was wonderful, and of the 20-ish coffee shops I visited while I was in Seattle, this was the only conversation I had with a barista. And boy, she knows her stuff. I told her I was from Wisconsin, and she was able to name a handful of coffee shops in my area. Friendly, quiet, and quality coffee. Half of my friends work in coffee shops, the other half drink epic amounts of coffee. I... don't drink coffee. In fact, when offered what was considered by the pros to be the Aston Martin of the espresso world, I merely remarked "mmmm, it tastes like coffee." I know, I fail. On the no fail side, Makeda Coffee's version of Affogato is fantastic. Molly Moon's ice cream topped with espresso (which tastes like coffee) is a fantastic way to start, continue, or end your day. Yum yum yum. They have lots of other stuff and things here, which you all would understand better than I, but I give it the non coffee drinker's stamp of approval! read more

The food at Wayward Cafe is nothing to write home about (note to self: review Wayward Cafe) but the coffee was incredible. That coffee was credited to Seven Coffee Roasters which is now Makeda. A half pound of Ethiopia is organic, fair-trade, and absolutely delicious as stovetop espresso. Add the coffee to a soy latte and soy mocha and your total is $12. $12! I mean this in a good way. If caffeine didn't crack me out I would've ordered another soy latte before leaving the 'hood. I have to take off one star on account of the pastry selection: in terms of vegan offerings, they were of the day-old variety. But I'll gladly swing by Mighty-O and bring my own vegan goodies to Makeda! read more

Doesn't matter what it is it's going to be great. It's small. The same people tend to be here and you get to know them. Unlike some cavernous coffee shops, discussion breaks out amongst regulars . This quiet neighborhood spot has all the makings of a perfect study fort: stable tables (diagraming biochem pathways on a wobbly table is hell), power outlets, fantastic espresso and tea. The baristas are genuine and friendly, no pretention in their service or music choices. (from Matt & Kim to Backstreet Boys? Yes, please!) Not a lot of seating, but I haven't seen them in a rush.
