Part of me wants to wait until I graduate to review Makeda to keep the secret to myself. This quiet neighborhood spot has all the makings of a perfect study fort: stable tables (diagraming biochem pathways on a wobbly table is hell), power outlets, fantastic espresso and tea. The baristas are genuine and friendly, no pretention in their service or music choices. (from Matt & Kim to Backstreet Boys? Yes, please!) Not a lot of seating, but I haven't seen them in a rush. My plan was to arrive at 7am, I didn't manage that, I arrived closer to 7:30. I had to parallel park on the street, I didn't see any signs about the limitations of that parking, I've been having to parallel park my entire visit to Seattle, I can not wait to get back home. The location was off the main corner of the street and a bit farther back on 78th than I was expecting. I believe it was the third store in. Prashanthi was the only one working at that early hour on Saturday. There was one or two other customers inside when I arrived, but as time passed many more people kept arriving. Each person was greeted and chatted with, most seemed to be regulars. Parents brought their children, people came in with their well behaved dogs then sat out in the outside seating. Overall the atmosphere was a happy, busy local shop with tons of regulars. Everyone was happy, talkative, and Prashanthi kept the conversations going asking about upcoming family birthdays she knew about and other things showing off how connected the shop is with it's customers. The store itself was skinny but long and comfortable. There was quiet, upbeat, music playing at a volume that didn't stop conversations but also provided a nice backbeat to the place. The store was all rich colors and art that made it a nice friendly atmosphere. There was plenty of table seating, bar seating, and outdoor seating. In the back was a comfortable couch and bookshelf full of books. I noticed a sign advertising a board games night on Fridays! Near the front door was used coffee grinds available for everyone to take home for their compost or gardens. On the condiment bar was a microwave and real silverware. While talking with Prashanthi I found out she has worked for years in the coffee shop industry, coming all the way from barista to assistant store manager. She has a true passion for coffee and customer service. She is very knowledgeable about the entire process of getting the best cup of coffee and knows the importance of the (green) beans themselves, the way they are roasted, and the way they are prepared. She has always considered owning a coffee shop, and things happened to line up a few years back enabling her to realize that. She is an east coast transplant but seems to be thriving here on the west coast. There was a large assortment of loose leaf teas, beers, wines, pastries, and of course espresso beverages. Makeda sells only coffees from Seven Roasters Coffee. While there I watched her make many beverages for the other customers, I failed to get photographs of some of the beautiful late art foam patterns, but I can tell you each cup was carefully prepared. The beans were ground fresh for each pull, and nothing sat - it was lovely to watch the slow of the drinks being prepared in one well timed seamless process. I ordered an Assam large tea, and a buttermilk raspberry scone for there. The pastry came on a colorful and sturdy plate, while the tea arrived as hot water with a make your own paper teabag on the side in a teabag dish. Bless her heart! This allowed me to make the tea steeped to my desired strength, and she measured the leaf into the bag for the amount of water poured. It may be called Makeda coffee but the allow tea fanatics to get the best from their lovely loose leaf! I let my tea steep for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Color: Golden red-brown Body: Medium Tea Smell: Rich black tea Taste: smooth, crisp, full black tea with no astringency and no bitterness I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and plan to return before my trip home tomorrow night. If you are ever in Seattle, although it's outside city center it is worth the trip to stop by this gem of a neighborhood coffee shop. read more

I love this place. I am not a coffee drinker, nor do I even live in the neighborhood. I love tea. I love chai tea even more. I happened to stop by this place by accident and I tried the Chai Tea Latte with cayenne pepper. It's been my favorite drink ever since. I will drive out of my way to come here to reward myself after a long day. Service is friendly, approachable and timely. It's also dog friendly. This place serves my favorite coffee in the world (from 7 Roasters here in Seattle). They sell the beans here, and I'm always happy to come by here and pick up a pound. I especially like their Ethiopian beans. Their pastries are always delicious. I can't say this about many coffee places in Seattle. The new owners also host some fun gatherings every once in awhile. This past winter they had an Indian themed night with tasty Indian pastries and chai. There was even a henna tattoo artist at the back. Parking near here can be a little tough some mornings as Pete's Eggsnest is here as well and draws a lot of traffic. read more

Having just moved to Seattle from the east coast, I knew one of the first things I'd have to do is get a good cup of coffee. Little did I know that I would have such a great experience at Makeda. Not only is the staff awesome but the decor inside made me feel relaxed and the pastries wereamazing. Ever since it opened as Seven, this has been our fav neighborhood coffee joint (and now that they serve beer/wine - a great evening spot - esp. when they have music). Great local 'community' hangout - no one (hopefully!) comes in for a 'grab and go' coffee. This is a place to hang out, read (wifi) chat, relax. Very dog and kid friendly. I usually frequent some spots around the corner from here, but happened to stop in with my mom when we couldn't find seats at our local haunts. I'm happy to have discovered Makeda! A) they're dog friendly, B) their coffee is great, and C) baristas are welcoming. We were there on a Monday afternoon and only one other small group was there, so plenty of seats. The place could do with a bit of a makeover; lots of tables are wobbly and worn down, and same for the seats/benches. We were lucky to snag the large table by the window which seemed to be the best spot. I'm always looking for places I can bring my dog to, so I'll certainly be back here! read more

Their macchiato is among my fav 5 in seattle and I think the best in the greenwood neighborhood, which is saying alot. They give you some sparkling water to cleanse the palate beforehand... really makes a difference :) The place is cute and cozy. What a cute little coffee shop! Service was great and they are dog friendly. Unfortunately we didn't bring our dog, but as soon as we walked in we could see little things they do for people that bring their dogs. I ordered a regular latte and it was creamy and the perfect temperature. I don't like my drinks too hot, but mine was perfect. Husband ordered the lavender latte with soy. I snuck a sip. Makeda's coffee is, hands down, excellent. They're consistently great. The place is tiny, so just a few people can become a "crowd", but it doesn't feel too cramped, and if you can find a seat, there's plenty of entertaining people to watch. :) Their prices are very reasonable for seattle coffee, and their baked goods are fresh and tasty. They have excellent art on the wall, and host events in the evening, often Indian themed, with sweets and a live DJ and sometimes even a henna artist! read more

The coffee is good here. They also have other food and dessert items, coffee related or not. It's not a big place, so not large number of seats, but placed efficiently. The atmosphere is laid back, and you see a lot of regulars and they are all pretty laid back as well. The music is fine, although turning down the volume just a bit would be nicer. The free wifi works fine. The service is friendly. It's a good friendly neighborhood coffee place. Good place to hang out, get some stuff done, or meet with small number of friends. read more

This has been my weekly, or so, addiction. I don't think they charge extra for soy which is super great. The shots are always spot on! These baristas know what they're doing. Great chill place that is come-as-you-are, welcoming, and friendly. Kids are treated well by the baristas when they are ordering. If I lived closer, I'd be in there everyday. read more

Just returned from a quick trip to get a cup to end my week. Haven't been here for a while but kinda bummed when I got my change. $4.75 for a mocha. I asked for a 16oz which I figured was a med. Aren't most Lg. Mocha's 20oz? What is the industry standard? Okay so they charge more for less my fault for not asking. Get home start to drink my coffee and I realize in the end I only received a 12oz because the top 1/4 of the cup was foam. And the real deal is that they are false advertising. The price board says $4.05 and the girl this afternoon is charging $4.35. If the prices have changed update your board or charge what is says. If I return and that is an if, I hope it's updated. I understand it's only change but no one likes being taken advantage of................Oh and no offer of a refund or option to be charged the advertised price was even offered. read more

Nice Staff Good Coffee The soft chairs in back make a good change of pace from every coffee shop in the area that is infatuated with hard wood seating (especially benches) Lots of stuff to keep kids entertained Cons... THE PLACE IS UNBEARABLY HOT! Not so bad in the winter, but man, you cannot be inside in the summer. The staff tends to congregate on the outdoor seating so that it is not that comfortable for the customers to sit somewhere that doesn't feel like death valley And the staff basically talks to their friends or reads a magazine and doesn't really go any extra miles to engage. Not that they do anything bad, but it is definitely average service. In the spirit of ending on a positive note, I do enjoy the warmth in the winter. read more

I really enjoy the unique and laid back atmosphere of this cafe, and they have a little area with kid friendly coloring, games, etc. which my young daughters enjoy! I also found out recently that they have a craft night every Tuesday evening, where you are welcome to come in with your own crafts. I like their coffee, and they also have a good variety of milk alternatives, which I appreciate, being lactose intolerant. It's difficult to find a coffee shop in our area that isn't a chain and still has a strong connection to the neighborhood. This one is a keeper! read more

I'd high expectations from this place. Their latte's tasted very bitter and did bite me back. They charge 50 cents extra for a card transaction and I gave them a dollar tip. That was almost $5 for an 8ounce latte. I'll not return here. Very disappointed with the taste of coffee. The location is good though. Very surprised at the number of good reviews it has. I super duper heart this little coffee shop nestled off of Greenwood Ave. It's a little hard to find, so follow the sandwich board that's propped up on the street! In the summer, I can't seem to get enough of their Iced Toddy's - an iced coffee that's super robust and packs quite the caffeine punch. Pretty solid way to start the day! Their pastries don't have too much of the boring 'ol usual coffee shop snackies - sometimes there's zucchini bread and other times there's pumpkin seed bread! Wheee! Coffee, let's talk about the coffee! This cafe embodies the very Seattlite coffee joint feel and uniqueness just perfectly. The location can be a little unappealing though worth the possibly far parking and walk. Ambiance is a hip, divey hang out full of people, dogs and kids. The downside of this is that it can be very distracting. None the less the noise level is minimum and seating is not a problem despite the small space. You can't go wrong with an espresso con panna, classic macchiato or cappuccino, it never disappoints! Hidden away on Phinney Ridge, Makeda is a neighborhood coffeehouse that offers awesome drinks and decent beans by 7 Coffee Roasters. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. Food is limited, hints the name coffeehouse and not bakery, but none the less decent. read more

Lovely apricot peach tea and I adore Rose- she is such a sweetie! She offered to turn down the music while my friend and I were studying and let us hang around as she was closing up while we finished our problem set, etc. Such a doll and really made for a nice experience. Their squash bread and morning glory muffin are still my favorite pastry treats. Notably scrumptious is the parmesan dill scone if you like savory pastries. read more

My wife and I live a block away and have been customers since the shop opened in 2007. It is so wonderful to have a cheery presence in the neighborhood seven days a week. Prashanthi is the owner and her graciousness is infectious. Her shop serves as a neighborhood meeting place and clearinghouse for information about everything going on. Her bulletin board is a good place to sell stuff and postings about parties, news about neighbors and upcoming events . We are on our second Newfoundland dog going there "Lucy Clare" now 9 months, the regulars remember our loss last year of the sweetest dog ever, "Zook". Many people work there regularly using the reliable high-speed WIFI. Come join us if you want an experience similar to the TV show "Cheers"... everybody knows your name and your dog's name. read more
