Maki Mart is a Japanese sushi handroll store with a large variety of options, perfect for on-the-go enjoyment. This particular location recently opened downtown, which is their 5th store. Their other stores all located all throughout the GTA. Located along Dundas St. W. steps away from University Ave., this shop is small, where it is take out only (no space for you to dine in). I've had Maki Mart many times previously at one of their other locations, and have always taken advantage of their buy 3 get 1 drink free deal. Menu wise, their rolls are pre-packaged where you have to carefully and expertly open them a certain way as the rice and seaweed are packed separately. In terms of handroll offerings, there are over 25 options to choose from (even vegetarian and cooked options!). The more premium hand rolls with more expensive ingredients go for $8.95 and the cheapest rolls go for $2.95. Majority of the handrolls are around $4-5. Options include spicy salmon, hamachi, sesame lobster, sukiyaki beef, tuna mayo, uni toro, cucumber, aburi scallop, foie gras eel, etc. For the month of March, they have a BOGO special going on from Mar 9 to 29, with their grand opening taking place March 14th. In terms of the BOGO, you can get an extra hand roll if you order...fatty toro, jumbo salmon, spicy salmon, crab mayo, sukiyaki beef, as well as roasted eel. I stopped by this Maki Mart on a Friday early afternoon to grab some handrolls. I actually didn't even pay attention to the BOGO poster as I wanted to just grab some snacks for later. I opted to get a spicy salmon and salmon ikura handroll. Staff were friendly and gave me time to decide what I wanted and informed me of the BOGO deal when I ordered the spicy salmon handroll. My rolls were packed in a bag with a soy sauce in the shape of a fish. I did notice that this particular location had no option for warm drinks (one of their other location has warm canned soups which counted as a free drink). I had my handrolls later on and opening the packaging to assemble the handroll was easy (perhaps because I've done it before). Both my spicy salmon and salmon ikura tasted good - good light snack! Obviously they don't put a crazy amount of ingredients in the handrolls and you get what you pay for. Overall, a convenient location of Maki Mart located downtown. Will definitely drop by another time to pick up more handrolls as well as take advantage of their BOGO deal before March ends!

    Sturdy takeaway bag!

This was one of those dining experiences where every detail felt intentional…read more The presentation was beautiful without feeling overdone, and each piece was balanced and fresh. You can really tell there's a lot of care behind every course. What stood out to me most was how calm and focused the whole experience felt--it made it easy to slow down and actually enjoy each bite. Definitely a place I'd come back to when I want something a little more special.

It's been a while since I've had omakase. Yasu was easy to reserve and was under $200pp. The menu…read moreincludes 16 courses which includes 1 appetizer (containing 4 dishes), 12 nigiri, tamago, soup, and dessert. There were three add-ons (toro with caviar $25, uni with caviar $35, and caviar sushi). I opted in for the toro and uni add-ons. It was strange they give you the add-ons before any other nigiri. Everything was very good and fresh. Standouts for me was the appetizer, all three cuts of bluefin tuna, the lobster (by far my favorite), and the hotaru ika. I would've appreciated knowing that the omakase included or not included toro and uni before I decided on the add-ons but I don't regret it. It was a splurge night after all. Service was very attentive. Note that the dining space is very small. 12 seats around the counter and two tables. There was a very loud gentleman two seats from me who never learned to use his inside voice and totally ruined vibe. But that's not on the staff. Another note is that gratuity is automatic on the bill.
