It was date night with one of my boys. We decided to check out this cute little spot since we were both craving Asian dishes. I love that they have the sushi chef out in the open. I always love to watch them and the art of food. We started off with their Gyoza. They were ok. We weren't too fond of the filling. My son ordered the steak hibachi dinner. I got the Pad Thai. The steak was so tender and yummy. My Pad Thai was delicious. They used thin noodles and the spice level was perfect. It was a nice experience overall. Our server was great!! Ordered via Door Dash, so always take rating into consideration since we know dining in is a much different experience. Ordered the Gyoza for an app. Was very good - each serving a bit small, but they were delicious. Dinner entree was Chicken Pad Tai and General Tso's Chicken. The GTC was really good with amazing flavor and plenty of sauce. The Pad Tai was a little disappointing. It was supposed to be topped with scallion and peanuts, but instead it was a sticky mess of mostly noodles w very little peanut sauce taste. Lastly we ordered the Buckeye Roll for sushi and it was SO good!! We'd definitely order it again and I'm sure it would be so much more presentable in the restaurant. Was delicious tho!! Another review called this place a "hidden gem", and I'd have to agree. I had other business in Diamond Center and just decided sushi sounded good while I was in the area. I made the right choice. I like Maki. In Mentor we have at least 4 solid options for sushi. This one ranks #3 on my list (because they don't have a rainbow roll and that's my favorite roll). The food is of good quality, with prompt & friendly service. I've not been disappointed once. I always take my orders to go (from all sushi spots I frequent). I've never gotten home and found an order wrong. It's a really decent value (#2 of my 3). The wait time is reasonable for a to-go order. I consistently keep Maki in my rotation! read more

Great new quaint sushi/asian food place. The service was very friendly and food was served pretty quickly. The food was good quality too. Didn't get to try more of the sushi- just got a spicy tuna roll and tamago nigiri. Both were delicious! The steak from the hibachi was very tender and flavorful. The pho wasn't the taste of pho that I'm used to, but it was still good. Didn't expect an amazing pho from a more Japanese food place. Really disappointed overall. We are new to Mentor and tried Maki a few weeks ago and were exited because the food was great and it had stuff that we both liked. Today, my husband had his last day at a previous job and is starting a new one so we wanted to go out and celebrate. I We got to the restaurant and were told that the waitress was refusing to serve us because last time we were in we didn't tip. But that wasn't true. We ALWAYS tip well, even with bad service. They offered to show us the receipt and we provided multiple reasons that this was not our ticket. (Different name, different signature, different orders, different charges, different card numbers etc.) In the end we proved it when we showed that our bank account charge did not match the ticket she was claiming was ours. At that point she barely even squeaked out an apology and just said "oh okay" Obviously we were very upset and left. This was a humiliating and disheartening experience especially because it was not us who didn't leave a tip. In fact I recall leaving her a larger tip because we heard some other customers being rude to her as we were getting ready to leave. I feel that we were wrongfully accused and also discriminated against based on appearances. I understand and even support advocating for your employees by making sure they are compensated but you can do that by paying them a living wage instead of harassing customers to make sure they tip. And if you're going to accuse someone you should be very sure that it is the right person. If you live in a larger body especially , I would suggest not going to this place because you may be unfoundedly accused and refused service. Very disappointed because this was our second time going and we thought we found a great quiet place we could frequent but obviously we will never be going back. This place totally blew my expectations out of the water. The quality of the ingredients and the preparation was off the charts.

SAVE YOURSELF AND JUST GO SOMEWHERE ELSE The first time my wife and I went there, we had a great experience. The second time - hold on to your hats - we were refused service for having not tipped the first time we were there. Except that we had, and had tipped extra. The manager showed us a receipt from the day we had been there, but it wasn't ours. The signatures did not match either of ours, the price wasn't what we paid, and the order wasn't even close to what we had. When we tried to explain that they had us mistaken, the manager argued with us. I had to pull up my bank statement to prove that we didn't pay what they said. After that, the manager barely apologized. At this point she acted as if they would -begrudgingly- serve us but they had accused us in front of the rest of the other visitors there. I was embarrassed, insulted, and angry, so we just left. I wish I would have stayed to have a word with the owner. I could not believed this had happened. If you are going to accuse me of something, you should be sure it's me. At first, I was a little more understanding, realizing that with COVID, everything has been difficult. Then I came to find out, we weren't the only ones to be turned away that night! Looking back at reviews, we saw that others had been turned away for the same reason. I'm all for tipping. Even if I have had poor service, I still tip well. I even understand if you have a policy that states that you won't serve folks who don't tip - totally get it - but don't tell me I haven't if I have. The humiliation we experienced will keep us from ever going back or ever suggesting that someone else go there either. On a side note, it's disturbing that the other people who were turned away were also bigger folks like myself. Discrimination isn't a good look on you, Maki. There are plenty of other nice Japanese restaurants to go to in Cleveland. I would suggest going to Pacific East or Hanabi instead. read more

Overall, a solid restaurant with great prices. Surprisingly good food from an unassuming front. The rolls are creative and the servers are nice/attentive. I have been 2x now, and I will definitely keep coming back! It's not the best Japanese food ever, but it's really good and the fish is fresh. The first time I stuck with basic stuff (eel avocado, salmon avocado, miso soup, marble soda). The next time my group tried the Maki Mentor roll, which is served in foil on fire. It is pretty impressive. Overall, that one wasn't our cup of tea--the salmon on top actually cooks, and the resulting texture is unexpected. The roll itself is good, but I'll stick with the other rolls in the future as the fish is fresh and I'd rather eat it raw. The hot tea is served nicely, but let it brew, as it does not come brewed (which is no issue--it's not overbrewed!). Overall, a solid choice, you won't regret it. Kept from 5 stars by: lack of fresh/non-spicy/non-tempura options on sushi menu, limited sashimi/nigiri menu.
