I had hopes for Bangkok Bar Shi in Melrose, but the food quality and customer service were incredibly disappointing. * Bluefin Otoro: Otoro is supposed to be premium, melt-in-your-mouth quality. Instead, it felt like eating frozen fish. It completely ruined what should have been the highlight of the meal. * Spicy Salmon Roll: I ordered a spicy salmon roll but was served a plain salmon roll instead. When I brought the incorrect order to the staff's attention, the response was completely flat. All I got was a generic "sorry." There was absolutely no attempt to correct the mistake, offer the actual roll I ordered, or take it off the bill. Mistakes happen, but completely ignoring a customer's complaint and offering zero service recovery is unacceptable. Between the frozen texture of the premium fish and the careless service, I won't be coming back. read more

I think the Thai food here is excellent, especially curries, drunken noodles and crispy style basil dishes. Sushi is not great. The issue is service. They seem to be running this place with 1 cook, 1-2 waitress and 1 bartender. Last time we sat for a half hour waiting to even be acknowledged. The people next to us left. As we were about to leave someone finally came and took our order. If they hire a few more people, this place could be great. read more

A hidden gem in Melrose. I'm always on the lookout for good beef and broccoli and this place did not disappoint. My dinner companion had a curry dish and stopped short of drinking the left over broth at the bottom of the bowl. We started with both steamed and fried dumplings that were wonderful. The steamed dumplings melt in your mouth and the fried dumplings have a great crunch without being hard. The entire staff was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They made great use of the tiny space, but I think it could be a little brighter to make reading the menu easier. read more

Nice new Thai / Japanese restaurant located right on Main St in Melrose. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Space is nicely renovated with some regular tables, high top tables and bar / sushi bar seating. Prices seemed reasonable. Free street parking is available which can be hit or miss in Melrose Center, but we had no trouble finding parking. Our group enjoyed the Thai food, we would definitely return for it. The Thai pancake appetizer was good. The sushi was average, nothing special about the fish used and while there was at least some attempt to season the rice, I wasn't a huge fan of how it was seasoned. We would definitely return to eat the Thai food again since the 3 Thai dishes we tried were all good and reasonably priced. We wouldn't return for sushi, while it wasn't terrible, there are just many significantly better sushi restaurants in the extended area. read more

Just went here for the first time and I loved it! I got a boat of sushi and it was huge! Everything tasted very fresh! My sister got ramen and loved it and my mom got chicken terraki and liked it. My dad also got sushi and liked it. The staff was friendly and the inside was super cute and cozy! The price was reasonable my biggest complaint was that they brought each of our meals at different times I had mine for 10 mins before my sister and mom got there's. The restaurant is new and deco very contemporary also clean . Service was excellent on top the server knows her menu and products. Gives very good suggestions. Food high quality and fresh , excellent presentations . The only thing I was not too comfortable the menu is too huge . I think they should selects only the elite items on the menu . I have nothing but good things to say about this place. My favorite item on the menu is definitely the Tom Yum Soup. I get it all the time, and it is perfectly balanced flavor-wise with a kick that will push your wig back (in a good way). The duck with yellow curry sauce is outstanding with a creamy sweetness that should be rewarded, and the Boston Sushi Roll is a good little sushi bite with the avocado standing out as its best ingredient being fresh and firm to the bite. I want to give a quick shout-out to both Em (outstanding dining service) and Banana (outstanding check-out service). Subpar sushi and passable thai food. Tuna in the sushi was multiple small piecies and two different colors, red and pink. The restaurant did say it was bluefin, just different parts. The rice was underspiced. Chicken satay didn't have the best texture or flavor. Edamame was a bit dry instead of juicy. The crispy chicken snow pea stir fry good, at least. The service was also slow, but they are still getting started. The decor is nice, though. read more

The food at this place was terrible. I would not go here again. I ordered the spring rolls and the stir fry with fried pork both were really bad and over fried. The spring rolls had no filling and the crispy pork was just chicarrones with a lot of sweet sour sauce on it. My wife and I dined at Bangkok Bar Saturday night and beyond happy that we now have a Thai restaurant with a full bar in Melrose. We were super hungry and tried nice mix of food consisting of the following: Appetizers: -Blanket wrapped shrimp with sweet dipping sauce - amazing cozy shrimp, cooked perfectly with moist shrimp, and the dipping sauce was excellent; -Thai chicken wings. Big moist wings with perfect breading. They also leave sauce on side which was perfect as the breading didn't get soggy; - Pork fried dumplings - amazing flavor and very tender and tasty; - Hand rolled shrimp tempura maki - very tasty roll and presented in a nice stand. Very fresh wasabi and ginger to add to top. Main Course: -Basil chicken fried rice - great flavor and quantity. My wife's only complaint was the chicken was very finely diced and she thought ended up lost in the rice but I liked this style as every bite had chicken. - Crispy Pork - stir fry with crispy pork belly sautéed with onions, red & green peppers. I chose extra spicy and they delivered. It was a wonderful dish and the pork belly was perfectly cooked. The side of rice was also good. I know this is just a small side but when dealing with Thai I like rice to soak up the sauce goodness. Dessert - Mochi ice cream. I chose the green tea and they served a good amount of mochi but my suggestion is they need to let the mochi sit about 15 minutes before serving as mine was slightly too hard. Drinks: We both had the house Mai Tai's which were very refreshing but not spicy like a true mai tai. We will be back, more than likely weekly, as the food and service was amazing. They are still getting into the swing of things as recently opened but from all indications this is going to be a great addition to Melrose. read more

This place is great!! I'm not sure what these other reviews are about but ignore them. I've ordered from here twice and both times have been excellent. I'm more a sashimi and apps fan so for me the sushi is fresh, the apps were crispy, it arrived when it said it would, and the pricing is pretty good. I haven't eaten inside the place yet so I can't comment on that but overall it's a great new spot. read more

Visit at your own risk! Just went with my daughter and they brought her entree but mine. I waited for 45 minutes and asked several staff members for help but they just kept shrugging their shoulders. I finally asked for it to go but after waiting 15 more minutes I had to beg them to take it off my bill and I left hungry. While waiting, two of the other customers near me said the same thing happened to them. This is not okay & I would avoid at all costs. The worst part is the staff was not the slightest bit apologetic and acted irritated that I wanted the meal that I never received off my bill. Prediction..they will close within 9 months. read more

I've been to this restaurant 3 times now and each time has been delicious. The brussel sprouts and fatty tuna nigiri apps are amazing. The handrolls, maki, khao soi, and curry dishes have also been outstanding. So happy to have another awesome thai spot in Melrose, and we were so in need of some reliable sushi!
